Ashford University Personal Position Paper Regarding Purpose of Sport Discussion
I’m studying for my Science class and need an explanation.
As future professionals in the discipline of Exercise and Sport Science/Sport Management it is imperative
that you know what it is you believe to be the purpose of sport. Using a maximum of 5 pages you are to
write a personal philosophy of sport paper. In order to do this you must first define sport, and must use
outside sources (not your own brain) and include citations to support your definition. You should look to
the definitions discussed in class and in the readings to assist you. By doing this you are articulating your
operational definition for your position paper. Your next step is to articulate your personal philosophy
of sport. That is, you must state clearly what you believe to be the purpose of sport and why you believe
it to be true. You must provide evidence and outside source citations to back up your philosophical
position. An example position statement might read something like the following:
I believe that the purpose of sport is to make as much money possible with the
shortest investment. Major Millions (1989) noted that sport is about making
money for the client and for the corporate sponsors. Based on evidence
presented by Dollarncents in the Sport Business Journal (2007) it is evident that
sport teams that do not have corporate backing fail at a rate 10 times greater than
those which do. It is also posited by Gimmemine (2008) that sport is a
microcosm of the American culture for the purpose of expanding revenues of
investors. FROM HERE YOU WRITE WHY YOU BELIVE IT TO BE
TRUE.
The third and last step is to identify from which philosophical position discussed in class is closest to
your personal purpose statement. That is, based on your purpose statement from which philosophy
discussed in class does it best seem to match. Now, in actuality, during your brainstorming sessions, you
should start with your philosophy and work toward your purpose of sport statement. That is, you should
think about what do you believe to be true and then create a statement that matches your philosophy? Use
your textbook resources, blackboard handouts, and other outside sources as evidence to support your
assumptions and positions about your philosophy.
This paper is different from most of your other papers because you will write a position statement and
then back it up using views and opinions other than your own. You must provide outside source evidence
to support your position. Please use APA formatting for this paper. If you do not know APA
formatting, please visit the writing center. Paper is due via safeassign and hard copy.
