Children’s Makeup Simulation Kit

The ad shown above is a toddler’s toy that consists of imitation “makeup” products. The purpose of the toy is for learning, musical enjoyment, and imagination. The imagination part of the toy refers to role-playing with makeup. The social norm here that would possibly shift is the thought of using makeup will now decrease to an even younger generation. Makeup has been typically worn by a more mature audience, but as society changes, younger girls are being introduced to beauty products at a young age with a product like the one shown above. If these products continue to sell, the norm will be that even younger children are allowed to have an interest in makeup and eventually will rely on the real products to meet up to the standards of models from magazines, social media, etc.

The social groups that the ad is aimed at is the parents of these children. Some parents will usually tend to purchase the latest toys for their children to play with, so if that includes these makeup toys, they will buy it. Since the children’s pretend makeup set that comes with social issues is a newer toy being introduced to society, there will be a shift on how we view this topic of girls trying to meet unrealistic beauty standards. For years, there has been beauty product toys for toddlers to play with, but the controversy lies with some parents not wanting their young children wear makeup because they are “too young” for it. Parents who do buy these toys for their children will probably be buying it because they believe it is the best toy for their child to be playing with since the toy industry is always coming out with new products. Even if the parents did not buy these products, eventually as the baby becomes a child, they will probably want to buy similar toys that are being advertised because it is “the new thing” and other girls have it. It is clear that this product brings problems for young women because they feel like makeup will make them feel pretty.

The social groups that are represented in the ad are small children. Usually parents do not want their children to use makeup at a young age due to self-confidence issues and it is also sexist to be advertising these products towards young girls. They want their child to truly believe they are “beautiful” and do not need it. The industry on the other hand, does not care about this issue and solely want to achieve profit. This just causes the child to want the product so they can “fit in” with the rest of the crowd, but now these products are being targeted towards toddlers and babies who have no knowledge of the standards of being a woman in today’s society. At a young age, they already being taught that these products will make them beautiful. Teen girls tend to struggle with “fitting in” and always follow the latest trends to live up to what a “model should look like.” If babies are being introduced to what makeup is at a young age, not only will girls struggle in their teen years, but probably at an even younger adolescent age.

I believe the advertisement violates conventional social norms because it is unnecessary and a stereotype towards females that they need makeup to truly feel beautiful. The age of young children discovering makeup will decline if these toys introduce such products to them. Since the toys have been designed for babies, the choice of buying the product lies within the parent. If the parent were to purchase this product, they would be allowing the child to learn about makeup at a very young age. This product should not be sold in stores. It just makes girls want it more because they feel like if every other girl has it, then they should have it too. I believe that within our society, we should only tell the young women to love themselves the way they are. Makeup is not a bad thing and can be used by anyone, but it should not be used for women to think they need it just to “feel beautiful.” As outrageous as it sounds, the social norm that it is being created with this product is that all girls love makeup and apparently, even babies/toddlers too so they start selling toys to them so they eventually buy the real product.

Besides the specific product, the ads that sell these types of makeup toy products is “selling” the buyer (the parent) education and beauty for their baby/toddler. The ads show how it is specifically designed to teach their child skills while at the same time they are learning how to apply pretend makeup on themselves. Although it may be a learning toy, there is a party of the toy that is teaching these young girls the beauty standards we see everywhere. Similar toys that actually use some sort of product such as lipstick or eyeshadow, teaches the child that applying this makeup will enhance their features. Once the child develops, they will already be used to makeup and will most likely start applying it on themselves as they have picked up the interest at such an early age.

To sum up, every girl is different when it comes to beauty. There is a certain time each girl should learn about makeup and that should not have to be during their childhood years. With these types of products, it seems as if these girls are being forced to use makeup because they find out about how all these other women use to make them feel beautiful. It is obvious that selling beauty directly to a young female generation is sexist and these products should be removed from stores immediately.

The Daily Face Makeup

In countries around the globe, women are listening to radio, watching television and reading magazines. These three types of media have helped lead to the expansion of the beauty industry. In an article published on Zion Market Research in 2017, the beauty industry was worth 532 billion dollars. Large companies like Procter and Gamble, Unilever, and L’Oréal all contribute to the success of this industry. These companies entice women by using advertisements that display health and hygiene products that promote cleanliness, makeup and hair products to mask imperfections, and cosmetic surgeries used to alter the way a woman looks forever. The affect it has on women also plays a role on their children as well. For instance, the children who are on the reality television show Toddlers and Tiaras are losing their innocence due to their parents lacking ways to raise young girls in the traditional sense, this is an example of modernism.

Modernism, “can be viewed in terms of liberation from outdated traditions that prevent people from building better lives for themselves and their children”. The boom of the beauty industry began in the early 20th century, starting with soap, expanding to makeup, and then turning to plastic surgery. Advertising companies have preyed on a woman’s constant need to feel attractive and beautiful. The beauty industry has stripped away the need to have a natural appearance to make these products more appealing to purchase. Sociologists explain that beauty effects the way humans interact with each other. At a very young age of life women are taught to value their relationships with men over other things, and that men are only attracted to them due to their beauty. This begins the creation of the idea that women must be beautiful in order to attract men, and indirectly links her beauty to the level of happiness she can achieve. Young girls are also being affected by the beauty industry because they see how their mothers react to it.

Whether its covering their face full of makeup every day, starting the newest diet trend, or receiving cosmetic surgery to change something about their bodies, they are allowing their daughters to see The article titled “Policing Childhood Through the Learning Channel’s Toddlers and Tiaras,” gives plenty examples on how the beauty industry is affecting the lives of children. Mothers, in the show, are so entertained with living vicariously through their children that they tend to lack concern with preserving their childhood. The way the children are dressed and how they behave are similar to that of adults. Young girls’ childhoods are threatened when their parents are allowing them to dress and behave like adults. Traditionally, women were supposed to be caregivers. In the article, the author explains how women were meant to protect and ensure purity. When the feminist movement occurred in the 1970s however, this ideal began to slip away as women began paving ways for themselves, instead of their children.

Researchers have made the remark that smooth skin, thick hair, and a symmetrical body are favored in most cultures. Beauty, in a physical form, grants personal satisfaction and social acceptance. In most cultures, personal beauty is the most important quality woman can have. It can be concluded from this research that the amount of beauty one possesses relates to the amount of beauty a woman will receive. The article, “Tricking and Tripping: Fieldwork on Prostitution in the Era of Aids,” explains the reason most women become prostitutes is due to the lack of love for themselves and the love they were given. In the in-depth interviews, the lack of love that the women received as children also played a role into why they choice to become prostitutes.

In the first stages of the beauty industry, the first floating soap bar was created and named Ivory Soap. It was created by Procter and Gamble, otherwise known as the American company P&G. The P&G branding label can now be found on Crest toothpaste and Dawn dish soap. During this time period cleanliness and godliness were hand and hand which is why the Procter and Gamble British counter partner, Unilever, impacted the United Kingdom so heavily when it created its own laundry detergent. The Lever brothers created Gold Dust laundry detergent and sold it to United Kingdom consumers in 1897. The beauty industry saw an opportunity to make cleanliness an important role in their campaign ads and people in the United Kingdom acted the same way as people in in America, and wanted whatever product would create a clean environment and a clean body.

The second step into expanding the beauty industry was by using the actresses in the 1920’s, when women began comparing themselves to women on television. In 1907 a French chemist named Eugene Schueller started the company L’Oréal. L’Oréal began as a hair dye company. Blonde hair coloring has been a top seller for boxed hair dye, and in the Unites States it is approximated that about 40% of women blonde to their hair. L’Oréal sold its products to Parisian hairstylists, but not long after this, the company decided to branch out into makeup products. Elizabeth Arden and Helena Rubinstein were two women who began at their own salons before making a name for themselves. Rubinstein was born in Poland, emigrated to Australia, and later moved to the United States while establishing salon businesses in Europe, Australia, and America. Both Rubinstein and Arden’s makeup have lasted for centuries and still remain as luxury makeup items today. During this time in the 1950s, a large portion of advertising was done over the radio, and this caused the American beauty companies to gain more followers.

The next stage of makeup leads to women’s desires to have clear complexions. By the 1960s a majority of advertisements took place on the television. While the television was being used in American, the creation of magazines was being used in other countries. These magazines contained lightly complected women leading to skin fairness becoming the top priority to obtain beauty in other countries. In China, East Asia, and South Asia, the possession of a clear, fair complexion is the most desired quality in a woman. Through the widespread use of advertisements containing women with whitened skin, it resulted in large productions of skin lightening products. A majority of these products claimed they could whiten and improve the overall quality of a woman’s skin. In India, the most successful facial cream was the brand Fair and Lovely. The marketing of light colored skin was a huge part of the beauty industry in Asian counties.

The third step of turning the beauty industry into a billion-dollar business was the promotion of cosmetics surgeries. The beauty industry continues to grow and the large production companies like Procter and Gamble, L’Oréal, and Unilever have been joined by Japanese companies like Kao, who created products that appeal to the Asian markets, and German companies like Beiersdorf, who have created the brand Nivea that is now sold in the United States. The media has focused on making women believe that beauty and youthfulness are the same thing, and to achieve beauty women must do whatever they can to stay looking youthful. As the industry continues to transform, so do the various types of advertisement; however, alongside advertisements are reality television shows now displaying the need for weight loss, facial reconstructions, and full body makeovers.

These many forms of television platforms make women deem themselves as lacking beauty in some type of area. For instance, the television drama Nip/Tuck was aired all over the world from the United States to New Zealand. This show consisted of doctors who would perform cosmetic surgeries in every episode, and was a gateway into making cosmetic surgery more realistic for regular women. The show ran for seven years and people between the ages of 18-49 were viewing it until 2010 when it ended on its 100th episode. Once, cosmetic surgery was just being used on celebrities, but now their consumers are real women wanting to change their appearance. The country with the most cosmetic surgeries per capita is South Korea.

People in South Korea undergo invasive plastic surgery at a rate that is 1.8 times higher than people in the United States. The most popular cosmetic surgery performed in Korea is the double eyelid surgery which creates an upper eyelid crease to make their eyes look more Western. By looking at the history of the beauty industry from the early 20th century to now, the campaign ads have been mostly targeted towards women on how to improve their overall beauty. The first stage involves soaps and laundry detergents, to improve hygiene and make women smell more pleasant. This created the promotion to the second stage of the industry were women were introduced to new campaign ads that were played on the radio.

The second stage led to the production of hair dyes being sold to women in American and Parisian hairstylist. After hair dyes, the companies began producing makeup to hide blemishes. The creation of makeup lead to women in China and Asia wanting to whiten their skin with facial creams. This made more women enticed to purchase them to correct imperfections and dye their hair, washing away all their natural beauty. The hunt to find beauty has surpassed just using beauty products and has finally come to making medical alterations to your body from the promotion of reality television promoting weight loss, implants, and body reconstruction. The way the industry affects different cultures is by knowing who their audience is.

For instance, in Asian countries, they use models in magazines who have rounder eyes and fairer skin, to make them want to change their facial features. However, in American countries they use televisions to display reality shows enticing women to have nip/tucks and other surgeries to promote surgical weight loss. Today, these forms of media are even starting to affect the youth. People as young as six years old in America are wanting to diet, and teenage girls as young as 13 want to have double eye-lid surgery to make their eyes appear wider. Mothers are not preserving their daughter’s childhood, so the youth is having to grow up too quickly. No matter what country people are in or what age they are, they are all affected by the beauty industry in different ways. The need to be beautiful has made women of all ages and races crave something that can never be obtained: perfection.

Self-image is a big problem for many women

Self-image is a big problem for many women, including myself. Many nights are spent at the gym, working out for hours, trying to sculpt the body into what society considers “attractive”. After running for thirty minutes and 500 crunches, you stand in front of the mirror in the women’s locker room in disapproval. Then you say to yourself, “I’ll be back tomorrow. ” Sound familiar? That’s because it is! Many women face problems about their bodies because of Britain’s unrealistic stereotype of what is desirable.

Forms of media such as childhood toys, magazine advertisements, and television have made a negative impact on girls and women (in particular) of all ages. Some of the anxieties that come with the entertainment industry’s perception of “what is attractive” have the tendency to lead to serious problems such as low self-esteem and eating disorders. From a young age girls have faced the pressure of achieving physical perfection even from the toys they play with; the unrealistic body-perfect measurements of the popular childhood toy Barbie.

Little girls love from Britain to Brazil love Barbie. Barbie is one of the best-selling toys in the world and could explain why Barbie has been accused of setting a negative stereotype for children in society. The big dilemma seems to be Barbie’s current figure-long legs, skinny waist, narrow hips, and ample bosom. Not only does Barbie depict what society considers attractive but She has everything little girls dream of, a perfect house, figure and boyfriend, Sending a subconscious message to society; If you get the body you can get

The guy, the Malibu beach house, with a pink convertible in the garage. As girls grow older they put their Barbie dolls to rest and, along comes a new and more extreme age of what they are exposed to new forms of media. Such as the teen magazines featuring articles about boys, beauty, and fashion. But They are sandwiched between glamorized advertisements for beauty Products, messages once again being sent of the body perfect and ‘lifestyle perfect’ Previous childhood messages of the infamous Barbie doll once again being thrusted into the faces of adolescent girls.

But this time Britney Spears is the new Barbie and she’s real. Running around in her skimpy crop tops and perfect pop star boyfriend; she has it all, doesn’t she? Young woman (under 25) are increasingly tuned in to a celebrity culture where the models’ and actresses’ bodies are considerably thinner than they’ve ever been in the past, and is seductive and appealing for young girls to resist. Since these actresses, pop stars are role models for girls nation-wide, they influence the way girls think, behave, and try to look, Scary thought…

Britney may well be the new Barbie…. Has the consequent pursuit of thinness become a new religion? And is the media responsible for low self-esteem and eating disorders? That may well be a contributing factor but inevitably it will always be down to the individual themselves. 2003 a year where there is no definite body shape or lifestyle, we should just aspire and embrace being ourselves, not want what the likes of Victoria and David Beckham have, or want Britney’s ‘perfect body’.

The only person that you will have to live with all your life is you, not Posh! It is important for women, including myself, to realize society’s standards of what is desirable are unrealistic as well as unhealthy. So, the next time I go to the gym and stare into the full-length mirror in the women’s locker room, I will accept myself for who I am. I may not be as thin as a magazine model or as attractive as a television actress, but be happy with your self as the inner beauty always shines through.

Kindergarten Chats – Architecture

This reading has introduced me to various factors in architecture regarding what it represents and should be in society through Louis Sullivan words. A Terminal Station: The Masculine Implies forceful, direct, clear and straightforward, The Feminine Implies intuitive sympathy, suavity, grace, and qualities of soothe, elevate, and refined. Should be easy to get in and out (efficiency) Outward aspect of the style takes on the ambulance of architecture. I agree, a terminal station should be able to tell us what it is and from the outside, where are the entrances, exists, etc…

This is a public figure and needs to be clear. The Key: Each buildings external aspect represents character and it’s up to us to unlock the architecture behind the building. The Architect represents or misrepresents society at large; what his plain duty is, if any what society has demanded and expect. There is a particular trust between the society and the Architects. Whichever way our architecture goes, so will our country go However the architecture is rotten to the core, according to Sullivan, the illusion of American architecture.

I agree how the public in large is not heavily involved in how their architecture is designed, thus we are putting trust on architect’s hands. Nature: Is visible, objective forms, contains aspects of beauty of form and color. The elements of earth and air shaped by delicate hand of time A creative impulse of origin In conclusion, buildings are made of materials, but the elements of the earth are removed from the matrix of nature, and reorganized and reshaped by force; mechanical, muscular, mental, emotional, moral, and spiritual.

Character: Not confined to the individual, it is also defined by the municipality, the nation, rent trends, and qualities that we the people are demanding in the marketplace. Values: We recognize values in medals, diplomas, or monuments. Brings a sense of community Curtain values in which money cannot measure. Take for example a building, any builder can tell you the estimated value of the property in money terms. However, the value of the building is based on subjective value and Dollar value.

Sullivan recommends that both come into play. Human nature determines the subjective value, which is more permanent, but money value is inseparable from the a Roman temple: affairs of life. Sullivan talked about how roman temples are place in great modern cities, at the same time having a strenuous sight, sound, that remind the people of their god. Such a holy precinct shall be doubly sacred to us in our reverence for this union of old and new. An example of how a building can be highly subjective, take for example a bank.

Just as we discussed in class, a Bank wants their building to seem powerful with strong values. Sullivan disagrees that banks in America should not resemble a Roman Temple. He believes that it should belong to ancient Romans and that banks an make as much money in any kind of bank. Thus no need for imitations . It was a part of Roman life and their culture, and that goes along with the Roman glory, thus building temples all over resemble a roman death. Taste: It expresses a familiarity with current persons of the culture, or trends. Ђ When an architect loses trust from the people at large, this is called weak taste. I always consider taste as what the market demands, for example having garages in suburban houses because of the demand for car and storage area. A Department Store: Sullivan describes a department stores as a structure that is logical, though, and states directly its purpose, and unmistakable though not wholly gratifying index of the business conducted within its walls. It’s directness of statement is its chief virtue.

Expanse of glass and light and displays In other words, it stands to reason that a thing looks like what it is and outward appearances resemble inner purposes. This is a great example of Function and Form. Function and Form: Every form we see there is a vital something or other which we do not see, which makes itself visible to us in that very form. A state of nature the form exists because of the function and behind the form is neither more nor less than a manifestation of what you call the infinite creative spirit, called God. Ђ A building is properly designed when you are able to read through and know the reason for that building. The details are not the same as the parts and the mass. Logical vs.. Organic growth Logical is scholarship, or taste, or all of them combined, cannot make organic architecture Logical is common sense, a thoroughly disciplined mind, a perfect quinine, and a gracious gift of expression. Logical can not deal with creativity process, for the creating function is vital, as its name is pure-reason. Ђ Organic correlates to organism, structure, growth, development, and form. Organic implies the pressure of a living force and a resultant structure or mechanism. The pressure is Function and the resultant is Form. Ornaments in Architecture: Sullivan explains ornaments as a decorative application of enhanced beauty of our structures. It’s what gives charm to a building. I agree with Sullivan that it’s a luxury, to a necessary, because of the great value of the masses.

Take for example a garage; to me it does not need ornaments, because Just the building itself provides the required beauty. However I agree that a certain type of ornaments mixes well with certain buildings, examples: retail, industrial, residential, office, etc. Beautiful building may be designed that shall bear no ornaments A decorated structure, harmoniously conceived, well considered, cannot be stripped of its system of ornament without destroying its individuality. The luxury of this inquiry becomes necessary; our architecture shall have neared its final development. Ђ Ornament design will be more beautiful if it seems a part of the surface or substance that receives it than if it looks “struck on. ” Both the structure and ornament obviously benefit by this sympathy; each enhancing the value of the other. Also a curtain kind of ornament should appear on a certain kind of structure. Buildings should posses an individuality as marked as that which exists among men, making them distinctly separable from each other, however a strong the racial or family semblance may be.

If I stare at my house, I will see all types of Ornaments that have been chosen because of my Hipic culture, Ecuadorian family, sports, hobbies, and each room has a certain type of style. Thoughts about this Reading I personally did not like this reading as a narrative, because there were many parts filled with a lot of fluff. I prefer to read a reading that is more straightforward and provides real examples and has pictures. Overall, my favorite parts talking about we the people have trust and give total control to developers and architects of designing our lives.

Concept of Beauty

When you hear or read that word, there is something that emerges from our mind. I find myself very much perplexed when I am asked “Kinas among panhandling as atone classmates? “. I don’t think there is no one that is “piñata” among all the human beings but rather Omni beautiful when it comes to beauty . Everyone is beautiful. Everything is beautiful. But how do we call someone or something beautiful? What makes us think that they are really beautiful? How do people perceive beauty?

How come we have different perception towards beauty? When we internalize this, we go back again to history to answer these confusing yet very interesting questions. Our concept of beauty is influenced by many things. The society is the very first foundation to where we discover, realize, understand, and come to know things. The society plasters in front of our faces these people with bodies that ripples and shines like the gods; faces with prominent nose, perfectly straight teeth, protruding lips;

Hair that is straight, soft and shiny and presents it to everyone as the concept of what is beautiful. Eventually, everyone that has seen that idea has perceived it in his/ her mind of what beauty exactly is. Everyone with the looks that is similar to the model eventually commits the sin vanity while the others who don’t eventually look down on their selves. We must be able to obliterate this mindset. We should keep in mind that beauty is not and never will be tangible.

We should put to an end the doings of moments that determines which is the most beautiful woman, in short the beauty pageants. Because as what Vie written above, everyone and everything is beautiful. Every day, we see beauty in many forms and shapes. There is beauty in art. We see beauty in the display of human creativity and passion. There is beauty in nature. Imagine seeing the sunset in a slow-MO; A bee swaying with the wind; The trees that grow long Greene stems and roots through the years.

There is palpable beauty that e see in human beings. No, not only those who are in the magazines and televisions are beautiful. For me, those who appreciate the beauty of others and not only herself is beautiful. Those who dream, who delights in helping other people, who never oppress others, and never gives up are beautiful because beauty are the qualities in a person or object that give pleasure to the senses or spirits ND being good in the inside is enough reason for a living being to be called beautiful.

My Neighborhood Cultural Experience

Running Heading: NEIGHBORHOOD CULTURE My Neighborhood Cultural Experience Carol Salinas Kaplan University HU300-09 Abstract I have had a great opportunity to look at some of my town’s most incredible architecture, paintings, murals, and sculptures. Our family has lived here for over six years now and I have had the pleasure to visiting our three local Native American Museums. I have always enjoyed going to them on occasion when I feel like just getting out by myself and having some quite time.

My experiences in this class have opened my eyes to a new way of viewing the structures and art around me. I have chosen to discuss a building that I drive by on a daily basis, never really putting much stock into how it came to be or its significance to our town. I will discuss in detail the structure and the design of the facade. I have also chosen a piece of art that has been in my family since the early 1970’s. It is a sentimental painting that I am sure holds more heartfelt value than monetary worth. I see it every day as I walk in my home.

It is truly a work of art. The beauty is in the eye of the beholder and most definitely in the eye of the visionary who created such beauty. My Neighborhood Cultural Experience Architecture During my field trip around my little town, I was amazed at all of the wonderful architecture that I had never taken notice of in the past. It was quite pleasing to see the amount of historical structures that are here in Anadarko, Oklahoma. Our town was established back in 1901 and holds quite a bit of Native American Indian Influence.

This is relevant by the structures around town. I have chosen to discuss a building that was constructed in 1906 and is referred to as the Whitley Miller Building in the Anadarko downtown historical district (United States, 1990) (Exhibit A). The buildings address as listed in the historical registry is 125-129 W. Broadway, Anadarko, Oklahoma. This particular building is quite ornate in its structuring and was built in the Romanesque Revival style (Waymarking, 2011). It is divided up into three separate and distinct units or bays as they used to be called.

The spaces between each unit are pilaster with round arch lintels of buff colored and red colored brick and a stone sill. It is a two-story building that has a stairwell up to the second floor. The stairwell is decorated with pdrels and pilasters. Two of the units display the names of their original occupants back in the day. The names read Max Goldman & Co. and Whitley Miller, which are inset in stone panels. The second floor has four double hung windows above each unit. These windows are accented by a fanlight transom.

There is a wall-like barrier at the edge of the stone coping and a corbelled brick cornice on the roofline along with recessed panels. Each unit has its own personality and charm. They are accented with individual awnings, one is red cloth, another is metal, and then made of wood. Although the architects are unknown to me they seemed to have approached the design of this building as a painter or a sculptor would (Janaro & Altshuler, 2009). It is just amazing that something so old can still be in such magnificent condition. My Neighborhood Cultural Experience Art

The art piece that I have chosen to discuss today is a painting that was painted in Manila, Philippines in 1962. The signature on this particular painting is not very clear and I cannot distinguish the artists’ name. I have included a picture of the painting (Exhibit B) as well as a close up of the signature (Exhibit C) in case you recognize it. This painting was a gift from my grandparents. They had become friends with many of the locals and befriended the artist. My grandfather saw the painting one day and asked if he could purchase it for his stepson. The artist graciously agreed.

My grandfather and grandmother retired from the Air Force in 1972 and returned to the states bringing the painting home to my parents. After the passing of my parents, I have inherited the painting. It has become quite a conversation piece in our living room. The medium for this piece is oil on canvas. This is a representational painting of the Manila Bay at dusk. The use of chiaroscuro throughout this painting adds a sultry, almost lonely feeling to it (Janaro & Altshuler, 2009). You can see a shanty or shack sitting by the water and the boats are in from the days catch. There appears to be no one in sight.

Everyone has gone home from a long and grueling day at sea. The water is calm and beautifully lit by the falling sun. The sky is an intense yellow and orange as the rays of the sun are hidden by the clouds. The perspective of this artist as it relates to his painting is amazing. When I look into the painting, I seem to be pulled into the landscape, as if I am sitting on a hill looking across at the beautiful sunset. A sense of calm comes over me. I can put myself right there just as a fisherman or his wife might be sitting outside after a good home cooked meal and relaxing after a tiering day on the water.

Aldous Huxley

The author Aloud Huxley Illustrates how the use of Lies has the ability to make a society appear as though it Is actually perfect. In the novel Brave New World Sir Thomas Moore states the root of what is thought to be a perfect society but clarifies the one misconception, its existence. “Utopia is sometimes said to mean ‘no place’ from the Greek ‘O Topic’ but others derive it from ‘e’ as in ‘eugenics’, in which case it would mean ‘healthy place’ or ‘good place’. Utopia, may have been punning: utopia is the good place that doesn’t exist. Sir Thomas Moore (Brave New World. 2007) Philosopher, Sir Thomas Moore states that Utopia, which Is the ultimate place of happiness, doesn’t exist; this may foreshadow that the entire premise of the body is a lie. The idea of happiness and perfection is a positive outlook, it allows for unity and stability within a society, which would be ideal. In reality, perfection is unattainable and genuine happiness may not always be a possibility for some yet the government continues to convince civilization that everything Is okay and nothing Is ever wrong.

Exposure of weakness, flaws and Impurities allow other to take advantage and story the success and stability created solely on happiness. The thorough use of the great words of a philosopher, the author demonstrates how happiness cannot coexist with truth; happiness exists truth exists but never in the same instance as it is impossible to live perfectly, life is unpredictable, and uncontrollable.

Mustache Mood proves that there was one a world where the honest truth and natural beauty were the mall objectives of the government In this society yet the need for control, stability, greed and power eliminated the Individuality It had once acquired. Truth ND beauty are Indeed desirable qualities, faulty but aesthetically appealing and therefore Mustache Mood would argue that it is simply unpractical. Whereas comfort and happiness are not always desirable, requiring sacrifices for the greater good, artificially made it is less faulty and provides long-term success.

The future is guaranteed with a man-made society, claimed Mustache, with God and religions tomorrow Is never guaranteed, hence “Our Ford” as opposed to ‘Our Lord”. “Our Ford himself did a great deal to shift the emphasis from truth and beauty to comfort and happiness. Universal happiness keeps the wheel steadily turning; truth and beauty can’t. And, of course, whenever the masses seized political power, then it was happiness rather than truth and beauty that mattered. ” (Brave New World. 007) Mustache illustrated that happiness cannot be left up to chance believing in a higher power that one cannot see with the natural eye is allowing too much freedom and creatively the beauty of God would ultimately upset the perfectly ordered society. The possess. Thus, “Our Ford” has eliminated the aspect of truth by be ridding the beauty for comfort and happiness, and the cost of individuality creating one mass of a unman society without a single independent thought of their own. In this sense the government had created a false sense of happiness within the society.

Happiness is viewed differently by all, many have different ways to go about attaining and maintaining it but regardless of how one may define it, it has the same effect on everyone by providing inner peace and comfort though when it is found in all honesty it is most enjoyable. Freedom and isolation have the ability to create happiness yet the use of isolation creates a world in which false happiness is acquired. To be a unique individual is freedom, freedom of scrutiny, to be different ND separated is ignorance.

In the novel Island by Aloud Huxley the author uses a person of authority to convince his society that there is only one happiness and individuality does not play a role in this one happiness. “But still, high or low, true or false, happiness is happiness and freedom is most enjoyable. ‘First because it simply isn’t possible for Pal to go on being different from the rest of the world. And second, because it isn’t right that it should be different’ ‘Not right for people to be free and happy? Once again the Rain said something inspirational about false happiness and he wrong kind of freedom. (Island 2009) The island of Pal is an ideal society, stable in its government with the Rain as their person of authority. While the Rain believes in truth and happiness, whereas others believe that in order to find happiness in life sacrifices must be made and that happiness cannot coexist with truth. The truth is that there is a world and an alternate society besides the one on Pal although these civilians live in the belief that their island is different and inferior to others as a result of this, false happiness and stability that has been created on this island.

To create and stabilize a society requires levels of authority and power in order to produce the results a perfect society should desire. The adaptation of an alternate ego to produce well with the use of evil is proof that although one may have the ability to experience happiness it is only apparent in the absence of truth. “The Yogi and the Stoic -two righteous egos who achieve their very considerable results by pretending systematically to be somebody else, even someone supremely good and wise, that we can pass from insulated Manicure-hood to Good being. “(lagans 2009)

Figuratively, these egos act as opposing forces for good and evil the false and genuine aspect of happiness. Truthfully one may desire to acquire a positive product yet deceit result in a false sense of happiness. Happiness creates stability within a society, truth provides uncertainty within a society. The use of lies creates the perfect balance of good and evil creating “utopia” and demonstrating that happiness cannot exist with truth as a main faction. Sacrifice, the surrender or destruction of something prized or desirable for the sake of something considered as having a higher or more pressing claim.

The ultimate sacrifice in the in the new world of England is the sacrifice of self and personal preferences in order to tend to the greater being, civilization. In Brave New World the author demonstrates his use of inhuman sacrifices in order to provide the stability of life the world controllers had desired for them and eternal happiness. ‘And that’, that is the secret of happiness and virtue -liking what you’ve got to do. All conditioning aims at that: making people everything is man-made, from their human embryo itself, to the way of living to the feelings and emotions that one has towards life and its purpose for them.

Everyone lives under a specific “Caste” which determines their career and social popularity for the rest of their lives and which forces them to make sacrifices that they claim to enjoy because “everyone needs everyone”. At a point these sacrifices become irrational and inhumane although the actual living civilians are essentially brainwashed to prevent them from opposing. The general society is happy, but their minds are not aware of the inhumanity the government forces them to act on. It is an act of power abuse if the deceit in the happiness which is falsely acquired.

Science is he art in which the power and the high level of superiority of the new society is developed on, it created it removed religion claiming it as the truth and the force of corruption. Happiness came at all costs in which science was the cost and ultimately might be the cause of the ruin of their newly found happiness. “l rather regret the science. Happiness is a hard master-particularly other people’s happiness. A much harder master, if one isn’t conditioned to accept it unquestioningly, than truth. ” One can’t consult one’s own preference.

I’m interested in truth, I like science. But truth’s a menace, science is a public danger. As dangerous as it’s been beneficent. ” (Brave New World. 2007) The advancement of science had been so great in society that it allowed them to make a breakthrough creating the alternate universe in which only happiness existed. The sacrifice of the “mother art” was made due to the fact that if and being had the mental capacity to become more knowledgeable about this utopia than the creators themselves it could cause an uprising in the world.

Those wanting to be happy experienced happiness and other yearning for the knowledge and power of art were removed from the society in order to only portray the good and not the vile. The truth of the society was never fully displayed thus happiness was only gained in the lies that the government displayed. Pleading insanity is a sacrifice, it is a sacrifice of one’s former being and sanity, and a commitment from then on in life. While everyone is born with it, it may not always be necessary that one would actually have to accept it and claim to live with it.

In the novel Island a certain influential character states that everyone is insane in the eyes of God and in order for the masses to remain happy they would need to except their insanity and live with it. Everyone should stick to the insanity that God has seen fit to curse him with. Peace Fortier -that was Lather’s advice. But make a point of sinning your own sins, not someone else’s. And above all don’t do what the people of this island do. Don’t try to behave as though you were essentially sane and naturally good. We’re all demented sinners in the same cosmic boat -and the boat is sinking. (Island 2009) In the world every individual aspires to reach perfection or at least some level of it, yet in this novel every person is categorized and placed at a level while one can be put in the sights level one may not attempt to surpass it this is deemed an act of defiance. It is inhumane sacrifice to repress the individuality and knowledge only few are born with. Other may be happy, but the belief that everyone is the same and everyone needs everyone is false, it is not an agreed statement it is a trained. Possession and power are a privilege in the mind of those who attain it, it is granted to them from a higher source.

Society is a pyramid, in the way that everyone belongs to everyone and strings, and so, give them the power to pull ours. ” (Island 2009) A god is a power above that one may seek for guidance, go to for Judgment, or simply inner peace. It has become a sacrifice to be associated with powers this is, inhumanely in the sense that one must devote their entire being simply to receive peace and happiness. The truth is that these homemade gods serve to have no more power than we who have created them yet in false belief and hope that one created we trust that this is a fact.

Happiness is the only certain truth, the necessity of human possession sacrifices is however not true. The mind is a delicate yet powerful muscle attaining information, attaining information for years on end, developing and creating facts and assumptions, this in which many see the opportunity to take advantage of. Brain washing and feeding the brain incorrect or factual information, teaching them ways of practice that may not be 100% legitimate but beneficial for those teaching it. “We condition the masses to hate the country,” concluded the Director. “But simultaneously we condition them to love all country sports.

At the same time, we see to it that all country sports shall entail the use of elaborate apparatus. So that they consume manufactured articles as well as transport. Hence those electric shocks. ” (Brave New World. 2007) “Conditioning” is one of the key terms the world controllers use as a code term for brainwash. It is a method in which the mind is conditioned to learn and develop certain beliefs based on the caste they are set in. It is a corruption of the government and the great power in which they do have over the population mass in order to create the happiness they wish for.

The happiness is gained through the use of conditioning the civilians, although as they are unaware they are essentially being brain washed it isn’t truthful in any sense. Having the freedom to be as one may please is happiness, it is truth; whereas constantly being controlled is not. The perfect society is demanding and controlling, it is necessary in order to be stable and sustainable. The corruption lies in the transfer of power where the authority expands from stability to simply mind-controlling. “But how useful! I see you don’t like our Bazookas Groups; but, I assure you, they’re the foundation on which everything else is built.

They’re the gyroscope that stabilizes the rocket plane of state on its unswerving course. ” The deep voice thrillingly vibrated; he gesticulating hand implied all space and the onrush of the irresistible machine. Mustache Mood’s oratory was almost up to synthetic standards. ” (Brave New World. 2007) The Bazookas Group is a method that the ruler Mustache used to create the balance and the stability within the society, however it is the extent in which he used it to and the brainwashing he used to maintain the utopia he had achieved with such great pride.

He had created happiness, yet falsely acquired, it was as though the people of England were a simulation with no real personalities to points of conflict, and there was no reason for their society to no be happy. He had corrupted it until the point that their society of individuals were living but they had had no real life of their own. The world itself, apart from society has basic needs, needs that sustain it and allow it to be prosperous over years to come. A world without its basic needs is incomplete if it never had them, or corrupt if they were taken away.

In the novel Island the author happiness. “Armaments, universal debt, and planned obsolescence – those are the three pillars of Western prosperity. If war, waste, and moneylenders were abolished, you’d collapse. And while you people are over consuming the rest of the world sinks ore and more deeply into chronic disaster. ” (Island 2009) While the society may by happiness and in a sense “flawless”, they obtain countless flaws that are actually masked and hidden in order to maintain the image that Mustache Mood aimed to create.

The corruption of basic human need and social habits and occurrences provides happiness for those who wish to live in perfect peace, yet it also provides a hidden lie and proves that truth and happiness may not coexist in this society. The idea that pain and all things negative is an avoidable state is irrational, it is impossible in reality. Yet somehow the attempt to create a society in the absence of that in order to create happiness. In utopia the government is corruption enough to believe that if the right alterations are made to the human society that happiness may be achieved.

In the novel Island the author demonstrate that if one were to be honest perfection would not exist. “One third, more or less, of all the sorrow that the person I think I am must endure is unavoidable. It is the sorrow inherent in the human condition, the price we must pay for being sentient and self-conscious organisms, aspirants to liberation, but subject to the laws of nature and under orders o keep on marching, through irreversible time, through a world wholly indifferent to our well-being, toward decrepitude and the certainty of death.

The remaining two thirds of all sorrow is homemade and, so far as the universe is concerned, unnecessary. ” (Island 2009) Pain is inevitable, happiness is a choice; the corruption of a society simply lies in the act of one figure attempting the alter life and its natural order. While sorrow may be unnecessary it is still a part of life, everything in life whether positive or negative impacts your life in one way or another. The use of irruption, declaring that pain is unnecessary is a false claim, as everything one experiences reflection on their life in a positive way whether it be indirectly or directly.
