Career Transition In this paper, I will research career transition and how it has impacted the workforce and management. I will present from three research articles that I feel are important in understanding how career transition affects adults who are transitioning from one career to another. As an HRM, one of the biggest parts of our job will be to recruit new talent. Traditional careers are falling to the wayside and emerging is a type of employee who has been around the block once or twice.

I am going to focus on first the way careers are changing, then I am going to look at the military and how they prepare their retirees, many of whom are still in their 30’s, for retirement, and finally, I will look at career transition and what role HR plays. Gone are the days of staying with one company until you are eligible for the pension and a gold watch. The average person born in the later years of the baby boom held 10. 8 jobs from age 18 to age 42, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.

S. Department of Labor (Number of Jobs Held, Labor Market Activity, and Earnings Growth Among the Youngest Baby Boomers: Results From a Longitudinal Survey Summary , 2008). Career transition is no longer looked at as something to avoid putting on your resume. It seems like everyone it doing. So how can a person make the transition smooth and successful? Career transition often requires employing new tools, skills and/or a switch in perception.

In her article, Beyond the Career Mystique: “Time in,” “Time out,” and “Second Acts”, Phyllis Moen. states that Americans confront a major mismatch between outdated career and retirement regimes and the exigencies of (1) family responsibilities, and (2) the risks and uncertainties associated with a competitive, global, and information-based economy. Unlike privileged workers in the 1950s, members of America’s 21st-century workforce find it increasingly rare to have either a full-time homemaker or a secure, “lifetime” job.

This mismatch challenges both scholars and policy makers to revisit, research, and rewrite the disparate scripts constituting the rules of the career game. The mid-20th-century bargain of trading a lifetime of paid work for a lifetime of income security-never a reality except for a group of middle-class office workers and unionized production workers in the post war economic boom of the 1950s-is probably gone forever. (Moen) Her points regarding the changing career climate are spot on. Many of he lifetime jobs are ones that have no real advancement potential. A GS (Government Service) job will allow for increases in pay due to step promotion and COLA increases, but in order to advance into a higher GS position a person would have to make significant gains in their education and/or work experience. Both of these might require leaving the current job for a time period. In some cases, the GS jobs have no advancement potential even with additional education, a person would have to quit their current job and reapply for a new position.

Even more evidence that points to employers changing the career game is an article published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics that states that employ¬ers are replacing defined-benefit retirement plans with defined-contribution retirement plans, allowing employers to shift more responsibility for retire¬ment income to the employee. (U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2010) So what are the consequences of this alteration of the career landscape? The median age of workers are increasing. The prime age group, composed of 25- to 54-year-olds, is projected to increase by 1. million and make up 63. 5 percent of the total labor force in the target year. The youth labor force, composed of 16- to 24-year-olds, is expected to decline from the 2008 level, but will remain over 21 million in 2018. The military is one area that has a great deal of experience with career change. Not only do the military members change jobs frequently, most retire after only 20 years of service. This puts someone who may only be 38 in the position finding new employment at a relatively young age.

A study examined the concerns of retiring Marine Corps noncommissioned officers (NCOs) as they experience the adult career transition of retirement from military service and transition to the civilian workplace. Analysis of focus group transcripts reveal a range of concerns related to the transition factors cited in Schlossberg’s Transition Theory as the 4 S’s: situation, self, support, strategy. The study provided insight on the issues and challenges Marine Corps noncommissioned officers (NCOs), and all Military Personnel face upon retirement based on the following articulated themes: cultural, community, social and psychological concerns.

The paper suggested that programming be offered to facilitate transition and should also address psychological and social concerns which may improve the quality and outcomes of transition to a new role in civilian life. (Johnston, Fletcher, Ginn, & Stein) Many of these jobs are in the skilled labor fields which are light on EAP’s to assist once the transition has occurred. Next to the military, education is another area that see its fair share of transition. A quick Google search on career transition will bring up a plethora of sites offering advice on starting a second career in teaching.

The main areas that see an influx are secondary high school education teachers and entry-level college instructors. Why are these areas so appealing? One paper seeks to reviews the current theory in areas relevant to industry-to-academia career transitions, and to outline a theory that targets this category of employee directly. They sought to outline the first step toward a limited theory explaining the special needs and motivations of industry-to-academia career transitions. Throughout this paper, the hybrid academic institution, consisting of a traditional core and a nontraditional periphery, received special emphasis.

While the research did not conclusively define the reasons behind the transition, consider the following concepts: (1) proteanism, or the protean approach to career transitions; (2) transition types; and (3) human values. (Bandow, Minsky, & Steven) All of which are indicative not only in instances of industry-to-academia career transitions, but in most all other areas as well. Even for the most experienced and well-educated person, transition does require some finesse. Here are a few tips that can help make the change less traumatic.

It is important to take a serious look at the many possibilities and outcomes before you jump into a new career or field. Consider these 10 tips as you make a transition from your present career to your next: 1. Have a clear plan. The smartest move that you can make is to carefully map out an effective career-change strategy. This should include a detailed action plan that takes into consideration finances, research, education, and training. Keep in mind that a successful career change can take several months or longer to accomplish, so patience is key. . Wait for the right time. The best time to consider a new career is when you are safely ensconced in your existing position. It is understood that a steady paycheck can relieve a lot of pressure. There are many ways to take steps toward your new career path; you can volunteer or offer yourself as a freelancer or consultant. This can help you to “test the waters” in your desired new field. 3. Be sure of your reasons. Just because you’re unhappy in your current job isn’t a strong enough reason to make a total career break.

Carefully analyze whether it is your actual career you dislike or whether your employer, supervisor, or office situation is the problem. 4. Do your research. Be sure to examine all possibilities before attempting a career jump. Talk to people in your network; read career and job profiles; meet with a career management professional. The more information with which you arm yourself beforehand, the more successful you will be. 5. Decide what is important. This is the best time for thoughtful self-reflection. Ask yourself what it is you really want to do with the rest of your life.

Take an honest inventory of your likes and dislikes, and evaluate your skills, values, and personal interests. Many people who are looking to change careers do so to find a balance between their personal and professional lives, to accomplish the right mix of meaning and money. You may want to consider consulting a career coach and/or taking a career assessment test. 6. Examine your qualifications. Do you have the necessary experience and education to be considered a qualified candidate in your desired career field? If not, you need to find a way to bridge the credentials gap.

This might mean making your goal more long-term while you go back to school or receive additional training. 7. Learn about the industry. Get a feel for the field that interests you. Read industry journals, attend conferences, and talk to people in the profession about what they do. Learn whether your target industry has growth potential. Trade magazines, organizations, and entrepreneurs have created a slew of Web sites that offer searchable databases where job openings in many specific industries are listed. Start looking at these sites on a regular basis. 8. Develop your network.

Begin nurturing professional friendships early and tend them regularly. Professional organizations and job industry trade associations are a good place to start. Many of them hold networking events and job fairs. 9. Update your job search skills. It is especially important to polish up your job-hunting skills and techniques before you get out there and start networking. Make sure you are using your time and resources as effectively as possible. 10. Pay your dues. Do not expect to begin at the same level of seniority in your new career that you held in your old one.

It will take time to move up the ranks, but if you find a new career that you absolutely love, it will be worth it. People are having to work further into what used to be the retirement years and some are deciding to live to work instead of work to live. Whatever the reason the challenges of a career transition can be frustrating and rewarding at the same time. The most important thing is to be true to you and to not be afraid of new horizons. My Career Job

Nowadays seeing as there is a constant decrease in job opportunities, we find out that the probability of finding our dream job might be limited. But personally I did not experience such a struggle. I chose to study account, because I always wanted to be like my father who planted the love of accountancy within me. Since I was young I enjoyed watching him recording amounts of money in different cases.

As I got older, I thought that I’m a genius in accountancy, but I realize then that the accountancy field is so deep and it’s hard to always calculate things. And because I like to challenge the best, I decided to accomplish the best, so I found out that an accountant might be the suitable job for me.

I find my self as an accountant for many reasons. The first reason that I think I will be a good accountant is that I am good at math and I keep challenging any math problem till I get the answer as well as I am so fast in solving such a math problem. The second reason is that I have good analytical skills. The third reason is that I think I am able to write well, so that I can tell others about my findings. The last reason is that I am so flexible at work and I can solve any matter with my boss.

Many people might be unfamiliar with what the accountants do and that is surely a result of the poor knowledge of the definitions and studies of accounts within people. The main job of Accountants is simply watching and keeping track of companies’ money and writing reports.

These reports will be read by the managers to see how are their companies doing and how will they do in the future. Then the governments use these reports to tell how much tax a company should pay. Some people read them to make a choice whether if they want to do business with the company or not.

There is a big chance that I could find this job, because as I said before the field of accountancy is so wide and deep. For example there are the public accountants, who work for public accounting companies. As well as there are the management accountants, who keep track of the money spent and made by the companies for which they work.

Furthermore there are the internal auditors, who make sure that a company’s accounting records are right. And finally there are the government accountants and auditors make sure that government’s accounting records are right.

In my opinion, this job is the perfect job for me. Although it’s stressful but I think that with every record I make, I’ll get used to it , more over this job need some dedications, so that’s why I think I’m the right person for this job. Also read My Dream Job Accountant Essay

How a Battle with Cancer Kick-Started my Career as an Entrepreneur

As the daughter of a successful mid-life entrepreneur who actually launched his business the year I was born, I believe the entrepreneurial spirit is in my DNA. It just took a bout with cancer to give me the drive to act on it.

Working for various companies over the years, I was someone who approached every job as if I owned the place, putting in more effort and time than my clock-watching colleagues. And while my entrepreneurial spirit infused my work ethic, my dreams of starting a business went unfulfilled – until the summer of 2005, when I was in treatment for breast cancer.

Today, this last day of October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I address how entrepreneurialism and cancer converged in my life all those years ago to build something good out of something terrible.

Diagnosed that spring of 2005, I had been going through a difficult job transition and a financially devastating divorce from which I was still recovering. I was living paycheck to paycheck, and my career plans had stalled while I underwent treatment.

With no paycheck, no savings and a steep monthly COBRA premium for health insurance, for me, my five children and my new, self-employed husband, I watched our family go into financial free fall.

I was desperate. We were facing the potential loss of our home to foreclosure, my car to the repo man and the shut-off of our utilities. I needed relief from what is now known in the cancer world as “financial toxicity”: the emotional, mental and physically debilitating – often life-threatening – financial side effects that cancer treatment may induce.

When my attempts to get help were met with blank stares, I became determined to give the help, not just get it. That’s how I became an entrepreneur: I decided to take action. Here’s how I went about it.

The first step

I believed I could make a difference in the lives of breast cancer patients in active treatment and unable to work — women (and men, too) facing the same financial distress our family was experiencing. Believing I could make a difference, I took $50 and purchased a book called .

This 1.5-inch-thick book, chockful of small print and bold-faced sub-titles, resembled a legal document someone would tote into court to plead a case. It wasn’t exactly the manual I expected to use for launching a non-profit.

Something else I didn’t expect: the confidence I felt in my ability to bring my idea to market, buoyed by my background in journalism, marketing and public relations. The trouble was, I had absolutely zero interest in reading through this giant volume of rules and regulations.

  1. So, recognizing a CEO’s need to delegate, I handed the manual to my  logical, linear-thinking, dot-the-i’s-and-cross-the t’s husband. “Here, read this and tell me what to do,” I said.
  2. Next, I realized the need to raise seed money. My first effort: I traded a knock-off of a Saarinen-designed kitchen table for our heart and ribbon logo.
  3. Second: I decided on a launch event: placing for sale on eBay a painted plaster cast of my bust before surgery. It weighed 32 pounds and was cast in dental stone.
  4. Third: I dealt with the paperwork of starting our business. My husband wrote the organization’s by-laws and filed papers with the IRS for our 501(c)(3) tax-exempt designation.
  5. Next, I spread the word. For the first five years, I worked part- and full-time jobs, spending lunch hours, evenings and weekends speaking at any and every Kiwanis, Rotary and Optimist Club looking for a free speaker. Armed with that dental-stone bust, and an octagon-shaped sign in pink labeled BUST STOP, I shared my nightmare of financial devastation.

I described my dream of starting an organization that would help provide breast cancer patients and their families with 90 days of non-medical financial relief so they could focus on healing and returning to the workplace.

Slowly, donations began to trickle in, as did requests for help. In the spring of 2007 we began making our first payments to cover the bills of women recipients in Michigan. A vision board I made that same year included the logos of several for-profit companies I believed could help us launch nationally. Ford Motor Company’s “Blue Oval” was the most prominent.

Growth begins

By 2010, our annual budget was approaching $40,000.  We hired our first part-time grants processor to supplement the work of our all-volunteer staff, which I led as an unpaid CEO

In 2012, Ford’s Team Detroit, which runs the Blue Oval’s , an organization which to date has dedicated $130 milion in the fight against breast cancer, stepped in to help. The organization decided to diversify its charitable giving, inviting to become one of its four charity partners.

Ford’s game-changing investment in our mission propelled us from serving Michigan women only, to growth as an organization which to date has helped more than 1,600 families nationwide, providing them more than $1.7 million dollars in bill-payment assistance, to cover the cost of housing, transportation, utilities and insurance.

My father, long deceased, would be proud to know that the daughter he spawned in mid-life herself gave birth in the second half of her life to a small, but mighty and esteemed non-profit. Today, that non-profit gives help and hope to hundreds of women and their families every year. And many of those women? Entrepreneurs themselves.

Running of a boutique is classified in the class of small business venture in fashion industry, and it is a dream to many people. The desire by many people to operate a boutique is motivated by the capability of individuals to apply managerial skills in operating small businesses. Masters in Business Administration is an added advantage since it attracts investors in form of partners as they may have a greater trust in your management capability. Experience also applies in addition to the education background. This includes an extensive experience in fashion retail industry in a variety of positions from different levels of retail sales associated with exact experiences as a retail store manager. In boutique ownership career, risk taking personality is very important and solid business backgrounds such as marketing, accounting, sales, management and knowledge of the fashion are critical requirements.

Being a fashion industry, the knowledge of current trends in the market will promise one an upper limit income. Future trends Many successful businesses start small and build up to larger ones through expansion. Being a small business owner has been my dream for me. I do not regret why I chose a boutique business as my career since I have seen fruits of my labor.

I am looking forward to building a large business empire by opening up boutique outlets which are at the proximity of my customers. I will even remain sensitive to the needs of my customers in addition to allowing them to make requests for the kind of products they would like me to stock for them. We begin to think about our careers in early childhood. But then we choose what we just like. Years pass and childhood dreams of greatness are replaced by a mediocre choice of a profession that simply provides basic survival.

And where are those enthusiastic eyes? Where is the confident desire to become an astronaut?

Nobody taught us in life how to come to our childhood dream. Our parents, our beloved mothers and fathers, are not able to explain to us how to choose the work of their life and in general why it is needed.

Remember once again what warms your heart. For what do you want to spend your time, and, in fact, your life? What kind of person do you want to become in the process of this life? You already have everything you need to succeed. Believe!

I chose this since I have been associated with reputable organizations and this would give a quick and easy overview to my employer of my career path and achievements in a chronological manner as it sorts out the experience by date and highlights my most recent developments. Question 2 Sport’s marketing as a career Sports’ marketing is a career for those individuals who have the passion for Sports and who want to integrate this love with the business.

There are ideal jobs in this field since the entire media and television network these days is devoted towards the coverage of sports and the sporting events. The industry is dependent on the corporate sponsorships and the marketing in order to cover the huge costs of athletes, coaches and other related employees. Some of the jobs in this field are like working to acquire events sponsorships, becoming a sport marketing agent, event planner, event broker, event marketer, and work for sponsor created events and then there are opportunities on a global scale as well such as the Olympics and the world cup soccer.

In future the employment opportunities in this field are expected to rise as competition would be intense. This is a kind of a field where you can enter without any formal training, however in order to excel it is always better to acquire a degree in sports marketing. To start of with it is better to do some internship in this field after the education. I have been associated with the admission department of my university recently and I have done management related job too in the past, I also have a degree in management and an experience of organizing, planning and control. While knowledge and experience are important, I think ethics is more essential to a company’s success: it extends to the manner of how a firm does its business. If I encounter suspicious activities among employees that have violated the law or Citigroup’s policies, I would not hesitate to identify such issues because it is critical to maintain Citigroup’s mission to be the most respected global financial services company.

The recent news in Societe Generale about a scandal and the consequences of an employee acting dishonestly, shows that even one fraudulent employee could significantly affect the fate of the company. Therefore, when working with Citigroup, each of us is accountable for our own behavior and all our actions affect the larger group we are in. Certainly, maintaining a good corporate responsibility is vital to Citigroup’s success.

Constant Learning

I am a strong believer of continuous education and experience sharing. It is particularly relevant in a society where relative competitiveness depends on the depth and breadth of knowledge that one can build. The majority of the people in the world believes that money is the path to happiness. However, society has followed the false idea of “money equals to happiness.” According to Aristotle, wealth cannot constitute happiness because it is just a monetary value which can only be used as a tool to gain some temporary enjoyment.

Many job seekers nowadays look for jobs that could provide them with the most salary even though it is not the job that he/she desires. Money or wealth does not rank the highest as my priority in job hunting. In fact, I place job satisfaction as my first priority because it can eventually lead me to happiness and fulfillment, which I consider as the best rewards I can have at work, though it is the most difficult to achieve.

Aristotle claimed that “true happiness lies in the active life of a rational being or in a perfect realization and outworking of the true soul and self, continued throughout a lifetime.” Securing a job itself brings people a sense of self-worth and certainly, satisfaction in what we do gives us more fuel for productivity.

Self motivation and the morales of the employees can be boosted if they are fond of their jobs and they enjoy it. The greatest satisfaction for me depends on being able to apply my skills and seeing that my actions have helped the company. This should be my utmost happiness and I believe Citigroup can provide me with such fulfillment.

Customer Satisfaction

To my acknowledgment, Citigroup’s goal is to be the world’s most respected global financial services company. Citigroup is dedicated to serving its clients with excellence. I agree that customers should be placed first since they are the primary resource for building the company.

They chose and believed in Citigroup’s products and services. Therefore, it is essential to provide them with superior customer satisfaction by ensuring them that their financial needs and affairs are handled with global quality expertise, fairness and transparency.

Take investment, for example, to illustrate my point. I think the stock market itself is very cunning and sometimes it is very easy for investors to fall into a trap. Unfortunately, people tend to be irrational when they start investing.

They pick stocks from companies which I think they know very little about its overall performance. When the market is going up, they want to make more money so it becomes very easy not to remain objective and careful in assessing its risks and returns.

As Warren Buffet stated, “what doesn’t work is when you start doing things you don’t understand or because they worked last week for somebody else. The dumbest reason in the world is to buy a stock because it’s going up.”

Despite the vigorous activities in stock markets, there are many other financial aspects which appear unfamiliar to majority of people. I hope by working at Citigroup, it would offer me the opportunity to give something back to the company and to the community.

When we achieve success in our own career, we must have earn more and have a stable income. Indirectly, we will have the ability to take care of our family.

Then, that is a suitable time for marriage. Therefore, that is why many people claim that career might to come before marriage. On the other hand, we should also look into the effects of marriage on career. After marriage, we cannot put in all of our effort into career alone. We must take care of our family too. Incidently, we cannot concentrate in our career and do as well as we hope to. For those who do not yet have children, this may not be a problem. But when we have children after marriage, we have to spend more time on our children and family.

Hence, there are many women who do not go to work after having children as they have to take care of their children. Therefore, career is adversely affected by the marriage and children. Other than that, we often face many problems when we stent up our own family, such as rebelliansand disobediant children, sibling rivalry among the kid and so on. This family problems will affect our emotion and mind. Hence, we cannot concentrate in our career and will also make mistakes when we work. Once people mastered of certain tasks for each stage, that will allow them to function successfully for every stages and make them to prepare well and move on to the next task.

Each stage Is loosely affiliated with a chronological period and is characterized by work attitudes, types of relationships, behaviors, and the aspects of work that are valued. Stage 1 Is the growth process which the early years from 4 to 13 years old. This stage is a time when the individual first becomes aware of the future. People ill try to find ways to develop their competencies and increase control over their life. Meanwhile, for the exploration process at stage 2 that is from the early teens to mid- twenties, people begin to form, specify and implement an occupational choice.

People will try to play deferent roles in various occupational options and will be explored though school, leisure, part-time work and volunteering. Before people firmly finding a more stable and appropriate fit for their jobs, “trial Jobs” may be tested by them. The third stage is the establishment process in between the mid- twenties through mid-forties. In this stage, people typically select a suitable field in their professions area and efforts are made to secure a long-term place In the chosen career.

Young adulthood tends to be a time for stabilizing, consolidating, building momentum and moving up. Obtaining certifications, credentials, and advanced degrees may be the norm (Worded). In this middle age situation, it is a time in which adults take on new responsibilities at the workplace and therefore, people of this age often eel a need to reappraise previous life structures with an eye to making revisions ‘while there is still time’ (Yuck, 1997). Sometimes people feel risk adverse with various career options which may lead to frustration or even depression. It may also be boring, dull, and unsatisfying. People at this stage already have their own skills and the abilities in contributing a fairly good idea.

There will be variety of reasons why people try to change their career. The four reasons why people change their career are due to the career plateau, obsolescence, career change and feeling undervalued. I. Career plateau By definition, a career plateau is a point in the career of an employee where the possibility of vertical promotion within the official hierarchy becomes very low or absent altogether (Worded). People will often reach career plateaus when they continue to work for the same organization for a long time and those who belong to the core of an organization.

The feeling of boredom, frustration, tension, loss of On the other hand, career plateau also occurs when there is no further development of one’s skills and abilities. One’s personal development and growth are stagnating or people stop learning or even unable to upgrade the skills. A lack of technical skill or career skill may lead to an individual’s lack of promotional opportunity or the desire to move into a higher-level position. Either for professional or personal reasons, many people experience the situation at one point during their career of becoming ‘stuck’ with little or no movement up the career ladder.

It possibly occurs due to lack of opportunities within the organization when there is limited or no upward movement within the organization. It means that, there have fewer positions than aspirants at each higher level of the organizational ladder in the pyramidal structure f organizations. Sometimes, some people has the ability to perform effectively in a higher-level position, but a lack of Job openings may prevent their promotion. This is called as structural plateau. Frustration will arise when there is a lack of promotional aspects and lead them to look for other opportunities elsewhere. T. Obsolescence Obsolescence refers to a state of being no longer useful or limited in use, old- fashioned or that which can be easily dispensed with or discarded. Just like obsolete tools and equipment, employees also get obsolete (Goriest Kinsman, 2012). It means hat, people who are employed in organizations is lack up-to-date of necessary knowledge, skills, techniques, technologies and lack of new work processes to maintain effective performance in their current or future work role.

The reason that causes of obsolescence are due to individual himself, his ability and ability to learn on the basis of continuous education and some reasons are due to the companies, which in their lack of ability to develop and implement a plan of action to reduce obsolescence phenomenon, and lack of facilitating the educational activities rather than Just approve them. It can be like a continuum if the people feel that they lack of awareness of change, complacency, lack of confidence, and resistance to change.

Further, it could be affecting them at the affective level when it comes to behavior patterns. When this habit eventually grows into an obsession, people will feel no desire to work hard, improve or go out of their way to be felt at work. But sometimes, there are other reasons why people feel obsolete and it comes from the organization itself.

It makes people have no interest to do their Job since there is a mismatch between the person and the Job, lack of autonomy or non- involvement in decision-making. Besides, the impediments from the boss as he is non-supportive, and the organizational policies and practices like ineffective performance appraisal system which lack of reward or recognition and inappropriate promotion policy. Iii. Career change In midlife career, there are some reasons to consider people leaving the current Job ND looking for a new opportunity.

Some of them are really need to settle their lifestyle, career stability and professional challenges with minimum risks. Even there will be possible for them to have all of these needs, they have to try to relocate in order to gain promote, income and challenge.
