The Solutions to Battle Obesity By Setting Up the Right Restaurants

Everyone has the tendency to splurge, Diets more often than not are cheated, Mouths are continually stuffed with food. There are so many ways that people can prevent themselves from losing the weight that they have gained. On the other side, there are people that even though they are obese, they choose to do nothing about it. These are the people that are at high risk for diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or a combination of an of these. It is sad to say that even though it causes all of these things, there are still more and more people each day that fall into the trap of obesity. They consume too many calories and use no way to burn it all off. They sit on their couches in front of the television, most of the time munching and crunching on their favorite salty snacks.

It is time to do something It is time to make a stand against obesity once and for all. There are many things that have been done to help lessen the likelihood of obesity taking over the world Exercise programs have been introduced everywhere. They are now requiring that kids in certain grades take fitness classes while in school. Most fast food restaurants now have to offer health choices to kids‘ meals, for example, McDonald’s Happy Meals now come with apple slices and a little box of French fries that usually contain about five fries in its entirety. This seems to have an effect on preventing childhood obesity, which is good for the generations coming up, but what about the people that already are obese, And not even just the children, the adults mostly.

They do not order kids‘ meals; they have no healthy choices in their meals, In my hometown of Granger, Indiana, the typical person orders the following from McDonald‘s: Large Big Mac Meal, all inclusive with the calorie packed Big Mac itself, a large salt filled French fry, and a large soft drink Most people pick the sugar enhanced Diet Coke simply because it has the word diet in the name. Where is the healthy part of that? With all of that being said, it is easy for one to come to the conclusion that nothing is being done to help get rid of the major problem once and for all. Many solutions for this problem are popping up this includes the idea of opening a restaurant that can satisfy the fast paced environment that we live in as well as put nutritional value into it.

This is not your typical restaurant though. While there will be master chefs in the kitchen whipping up the food, this will be competition between the fast food chain The purpose is to giVe places like Burger King, McDonald‘s, and Wendy’s a run for their money. A majority of people that attend fast food restaurants on a daily basis do so because they are always in a rush and places like McDonald‘s and Wendy’s cut out the long waiting periods that they want to avoid This is because of the idea of the drive through While we will be a sit»down restaurant we will also have a drive through option which will be the key in achieving that fast pace that certain people are looking fort The foods that are served here, however, have very little nutritional value if any at all.

This is something that needs to be changed, By transforming the fat induced, calorie packed meals on fast food menus into nutritional, calorie cut meals; the rate of obesity that is currently existing in our society today will be lowered, The question might be raised “How much will a project like this cost?“ According to a study conducted in November of 2011 by a gentleman named John Kunkel, the average cost for opening a restaurant is $450,000 and $525,000. While this may seem like a lot of money, in the long run the idea of opening a healthy restaurant will help people save money on hospital bills for major health problems that arise due to obesity. The thought of a single person paying about half a million dollars to build a single restaurant is crazy to think about This however brings us another question of how we will be paying for the restaurant, Most of the money that will be used for this project will more than likely come from loans that will in the end need to be paid off.

A large sum of the money though can come from private investors as well as from fundraising activities that we could participate in, Fundraising has been proven to help a company both get funds for what they need and also to get their name out in the open. In an article written by Non»Profit Marketing Zone and Fundraising they say “According to non-profit marketing zone 80% of the people in the United States give to non—profits”. While we will just stick to many different fundraising activities, this is how the money will be raised to help build the restaurant that is desperately needed This will also help to create a clientele because when a majority of people donate money to a business that is just starting up they will want to become regular customers at that business which will help to bring in the profits when it officially opens.

As far as the food goes for this restaurant, we would need to seriously reevaluate the way that typical Americans eat The easiest way to do this would be to get someone in the field of Dietetics and Nutrition Sciences on our team Having an expert on our team will not only ensure that we will be successful in what we are trying to do, but it will also be a way to pull people in as well, Most people want to eat healthier, In fact, I hear numerous people every day complain about their weight and how they wish that they could eat healthier but they don’t know how. This is where our dietician can come in handy, This is a way for people that are on that specific path of life to get professional eating help without paying the high medical bills.

Opening this restaurant could also be a way to inspire people Because our customers would know that what they are eating is in fact good for them, it could spark an idea in their minds that they too can make such nutritional food for themselves In addition to offering healthy alternatives for eating out, we could also take advantage of our dietician and our chefs all at once We could offer cooking classes to the public that would show them how easy it is to make healthy meals at home for themselves and their families, The idea of doing this would allow people to get a cookbook of recipes that have been approved by our dietician on duty and they will be able to learn how to make some of them using the techniques that they learned from our master chefs.

The idea of taking cooking classes has become a big trend in society today so offering this to our customers’ guarantees that we will be successful in our attempts to make America healthy again. It is the little things in life that tend to build up overtime. In the case of obesity, the little things are the numerous unhealthy meals that a person consumes, the fat and salts and other harsh components of these meals are what build up overtime. This creates the body type for a person that is not wanted by anyone By creating a healthy restaurant where people can go out and celebrate the next family member’s birthday, treat their significant other, celebrate a promotion, and whatever else people do at restaurants, it can change the way that America eatsi Offering cooking programs through that very same restaurant would help us to overcome the prevalent problem in our society today as well. Obesity is a problem and it is time that we do something about it to overcome its

Fast Food Should Be Banned

In an age where technology continues to develop daily to make peoples lives more convenient, we must be careful to not be expedient when it comes to our food. Fast food is a revelation in the food industry, serving masses of people in a matter of minutes, but are we sacrificing our health for speed and low costs? With thirty-six percent of all adults in America eating fast food daily, the nutritional value of fast food needs to be reexamined (Fryar et al.)., should fast food be banned? Our body relies on certain nutrients to operate and to be deprived of those can cause serious harm to both one’s physical and mental health.

In the article “Fast Food Pattern and Cardiometabolic Disorders: A Review of Current Studies”, Bahadoran and others claim fast food to be “rich in highly processed meat and refined carbohydrate, sodium, total fat, saturated and trans fatty acids, cholesterol, and poor in essential nutrients and dietary fibers” (2016).

This nutritional makeup is detrimental to one’s health as her team further explains that an increased intake of fast food has a direct correlation with higher obesity and BMI levels. Specific foods were also “red-flagged” as processed meats such as burgers, fried chicken, and sausage could increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by up to nineteen percent (2016). The increased amount of sugar and salt in these fast food options also raises major health concerns. Foods that are high in sugar will absorb vital trace elements such as vitamin B and zinc from the body to assist the sugar through the digestive process (Sugar).

Not only are sugar-rich foods lacking vital nutrients for a healthy lifestyle, but they also take away these nutrients from your body. Foods that are too high in sodium can also cause health issues. In a study performed by Leon and others, it was observed that the average participant would intake over 300mg of the daily recommended sodium intake if they ate just one fast food meal that day (Leon et al.). An excess of sodium can weaken bones and eating a diet based on fast food proves this as studies conducted by Anderson and others proved that when twelve healthy young males ate a diet based on fast food for just one week, they reported having a lessened ability to move compared to before the fast food binge (2015).

After only one week of fast food, all twelve males had weakened bone structure due to the sodium-rich food intake. With an obscene amount of negative health effects paired with virtually no positive health benefits that home-cooked meals could also offer, the fast food industry is detrimental to our country’s health. With a direct correlation to obesity and other severe health issues, a massive overhaul should be required in the industry to offer healthier food options. However, if no changes are to be made, a ban on fast food should be strongly considered.

Wellness Plan

Well I started to e myself gaining weight, I told myself that I was not happy with the way I looked and I was going to do something about It, I Joined Ballsy Fitness. That did not last very long, I was going to the gym two times a week for at least 2 months and did not see much of a change so I gave up going and Just decided to start eating right, that helped a bit, I was doing k I told myself and then shortly after that I got divorced and the stress from all the consequences of getting divorced made me loose a lot of weight, which was great but I lost it in an unhealthy way.

I was able to keep the weight off, until I got involved in a relationship which after a couple of years went downhill and I became very depressed, which led to another eating binge and the weight gain came back in no time. With the positive influence from friends I was able to join a group at work in which we walked 3 times a day, 15 miss for both our morning and afternoon break and about 20-25 miss during our lunch, we did this everyday we were at work. You are probably wondering what was the purpose behind this first paragraph? I Just wanted to give you a bit of my background with my challenges due to my weight.

Now at the age of 33 1 am a mom again and so far I am lucky to have lost just about all the weight I gained during pregnancy. I have decided to keep up the healthy eating habit I adapted while being pregnant but I have now also added a 30 min walk each evening around the Jogging track at the community center. I plan on doing this until my baby is at least 3 months old where he can be a stroller for a longer period of time without a head support. I believe by starting off with the 30 minute walk I have had a little bit more energy during the day, instead of feeling like I have to sleep all day long as my baby slept.

Together with breast feeding, the 30 minute of walking will help me burn more calories which assist with the weight loss and help eliminate the possibility of diabetes or heart disease by not being overweight. I know by not sticking to my plan, It could lead to negative results such as, continuous weight gain which can potentially lead to serious health conditions such as heart disease or diabetes, less energy to spend time with my family, also lack f motivation to get my school work done, resulting In poor grades, and which can eventually lead to me being unhappy and unhappiness can affect you In many ways.

In order to make sure that I suck to my plan of choice I need to make sure that I make the time everyday like I have been doing to vaults the community center to put In the 30 miss to get my walking done. As my little one gets older I plan to Increase that 30 miss to at least an hour or even try to incorporate some other form of exercise at least two toner clays out AT ten week. As I make tense plans to lead a enameller Tie ten only obstacles I see that could prevent this is myself.

I need to make sure I stay as discipline as I am now to follow thru. Also I need to make sure that throughout my busy schedule I do find the time to get these activities done. I plan on sticking with this plan for at least a year, by the end of that year I plan to be at least boss as compared to the 159 lbs I am at now. If this is achieved, I will not only be a happier person but will be able to do more with my family, especially with my kids. My reward will be a long awaited shopping spree!

Penthouse this circumstances might affect the longevity of a certain person, this essay will argue that lifestyle choices are In fact the most relevant factor when It comes to life expectancy.

Lifestyle choices like smoking and drinking, affect strongly a person’s longevity. Penthouse not every smoking or drinking case ends In death, this lifestyle choices can lead to serious health Issues that can reduce the life expectancy of an Individual. A study held by L. Wilhelmina and other scientists, shows that there are many factors that can affect someone’s longevity, and they conclude that non-smokers have a higher possibility of surviving.

This is because smoking causes injuries in the immune, circulatory and respiratory systems and this further leads to diseases like anger and osteoporosis. But smoking is not the only threat to someone’s health, drinking alcoholic beverages is extremely harmful, both mentally and physically, and can result with mortal consequences. According to Patrick M. Krueger, suicides, accidents, cancers and other diseases are the main causes of death in heavy drinkers. Drinking and smoking affect directly someone’s life expectancy due to its health and mental consequences.

In contrast, some socio-economic circumstances clearly impact on someone’s longevity and lifestyle choices. Government interventions like the minimum wage, effect directly somebody’s socio-economic situation, and economic instability can influence someone’s lifestyle choices and longevity. For example, if the minimum wage decreases, and so does the price of fast food, a worker that earns a basic salary won ‘t be able to choose between because his budget only lets him spend in the cheapest food in the market.

These can be In many ways someone’s decision, penthouse aspects like the ones mentioned In the previous paragraph might Influence an Individual’s choices. Longevity By militaries like socio-economic situation and genetic background may not be anyone’s election. Say will argue that lifestyle choices are in fact the most relevant factor when it Penthouse not every smoking or drinking case ends in death, this lifestyle choices can lead to serious health issues that can reduce the life expectancy of an individual. Lets him spend in the cheapest food in the market. In countries like The United States income the lower the mortality, making it evident that income might be a method to identify the lifestyle situations, that lead to the health contrast within people of different economic groups (Marmot, 2002).

On the other hand, overweight and the lack of physical activity alter negatively a person’s life expectancy. These can be in many ways someone’s decision, penthouse aspects like the ones mentioned in the previous paragraph might influence an individual’s choices. Effects of Television on Society

THE EFFECTS OF TELEVISION ON SOCIETY December 12th, 2007 At the end of the XVIIIth century, scientists have discovered a way to transmit an image from a point to another. It was the beginning of television. Since then, every household has a television. Over the years, it has revolutionized people’s life. Now, as it has become a spread consumer good, everybody has one television at home, even sometimes, two or more. It has changed people’s life because the television is seen as a mean of entertainment.

The striking point is that television has become a usual good whereas in the past it was almost considered as an expensive good that not all the families could afford. By watching television, people are easily able to escape from the routine of their everyday life, and to relax. In other words, television is a mean of discovering, exploring, learning, dreaming, and thinking. However, even if it has changed people’s life and has a good effect on them, it has many bad effects on them too. In fact, it is also a mean to destroy people’s life.

It destroys people life because, in most of the cases, it influences a lot of people. Orson Welles, a famous American screenwriter, film and theatre director, a film producer and an actor in films, and theatres, once said: “I hate television. I hate it as much as peanuts. But I can’t stop eating peanuts”. This quotation is a way to show to people that television can be compared as a drug that people cannot get rid off. Like drugs, it makes people doing things that, in most cases, they would not have done. Actually, it has a strong power of influencing people in a bad way.

It influences the ones who are psychological weak, and people who cannot make the difference between the fiction and the real life. As a result, some people think that violence on television influences people because they are not able, to see what is true and what is false. However, even if it has some bad sides, television is seen as educational and a mean to develop people’s knowledge. Even if books and newspapers are the two most important ways of learning, television had conquest people’s heart and now is trusted by lots of them.

Television has many bad sides and bad effects that can be very dangerous for people and the ones who live around them. It destroys people’s life in a way, and sometimes pushes them to do things they would not have thought they would have done such as commit crimes. Over the years, television has become a drug for a large amount of people. In fact, they cannot live without it and have to watch it everyday. People became addicted to their everyday shows, and cannot live without watching them. Actually, some people cannot imagine their everyday life without a television.

Television has become their most popular hobby. It is, in fact, the most popular one even before sport or going out with some friends. Socialization does not seem anymore to be a priority in people’s life. It seems that nowadays, people prefer watching TV rather than doing other things. According to the website www. turnoffyourtv. com, people spend about two hours per day in front of their television set. In this survey, men are pointed out because they spend more time watching television than women. So, they are more addictive than women because they watch television between two and three hours per day.

It is all the more outstanding as television has become most popular than other hobbies such as sport that could be more interesting. To show that people are really addicted to television, the Media Awareness Network website says that “A scientific American article entitled “Television Addiction” examined why children and adults may find it hard to turn their TVs off. According to researchers, viewers feel an instant sense of relaxation when they start to watch TV—but that feeling disappears just as quickly when the box is turned off.

While people generally feel more energized after playing sports or engaging in hobbies, after watching TV they usually feel depleted of energy. According to the article “this is the irony of TV: people watch a great deal longer than they plan to, even though prolonged viewing is less rewarding. ” Because of this addiction, people can withdraw into themselves and live apart from the society they are living in. According to another website, children spend twenty five hours per week in front of their television set instead of spending their free time playing with their friends or practicing sports.

This behavior should alert their parents because going outside and meeting people are parts of their education. As a result, children should not stay all day long in their house watching television and playing video games. It is not good for their education as well as for their socialization. Moreover, the television has other bad consequences and the first target is children. In addition to what was said previously, television influences the youngest. In fact, children are an easy target for television producer.

They are much more easily influenced than adults for example. As a result, they can be influenced by violent movies such as thrillers, and can have a weird and violent behavior after having watching such a movie. Watching a violent show can give children the taste of violence and other related behaviors. As they are innocent, they cannot make the difference between what fiction is and what reality is. They want to do what their superheroes do, no matter what. As a result, watching a violent movie can affect in a bad way the weaker.

It can make them thinking about murders and sometimes make them committing crimes. Even a person who comes from a well educated and wealthy family can be touched by it. It does not only affect people with financial and other problems. As a result to this violence on television, on April 19th, 2001, in Columbine High School, Colorado, two teenagers named Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed twelve students and one teacher and then killed themselves. They had guns that they had ordered online and homemade bombs they had made days before the massacre.

According to the media, they did that because they were both influenced by television and both influenced by a singer named Marilyn Manson and his music videos. Moreover, as they were the victims of mockeries and were rejected by the others, they decided to killed people to show them that they were not as stupid as they thought. In a way, both killers were influenced by violent movie. They were both full of anger and were ready to kill everybody. In fact, in the cybercollege website, it is said that the more children watch television, the more aggressive they become in the future.

Moreover, they would be more likely to repeat what they have seen on television. In addition to that, an article in changingchannels. com says: “Basically, what these studies indicate is that violent media images tend to make us all just a bit more aggressive and impatient. The effect is more dramatic on children, who mentally process media violence the same way they would actual violence — and can be traumatized by exposure to excessively violent scenes. ” As a shocking fact to prove that, in howtotalktoyourkids. om website in 2001, 75% of boys and 60% of girls said that they hit somebody in the past year because they were angry. Another outstanding fact that could be added is the event that occurred on April 16th, 2007 in the United States of America. Seung-Hui Cho, an American Korean who was a senior at Virginia Tech University, killed thirty three people and killed himself. His motivation to commit murders was because he wanted to kill people. In other words, he did that just to kill and to have blood on his hands. In fact, this student had psychological problems as doctors said.

However, he was not the only one to be blamed. In fact, as he was also part of a generation that spends their time watching violent movies and that is very easily influenced, television should also be blamed. Plus, by watching such movies, kids can think that violence resolves any problems they have to face. As a result, they are willing to practice bullying, to employ swear words and to hit people if they do not have what they want or if they are disappointed of something. They think this is the only way and do not think that talking could be a good solution.

Moreover, the ones who watch violent movies could become afraid of the reality. They could, in fact, think that what happens in movies could become true. It can destabilize them. As a result, they can have psychological problems. The university killer had psychological problems, so people can say that he may have watched violent show on television when he was young, and since then he had been traumatized. Then, people should be aware that sometimes wrong information is given on television. As a result, people should remain conscious that information can be amplified to scare people.

Most of the time, the weaker cannot see what is wrong and what is true. People should listen to what is said on television; but to confirm what they have learned they should read the newspapers, for example, to expand their knowledge and to have many different points of view to construct their culture. The more information people have about a subject, the more able they are to see what could be true and what could be false. So, while everybody is sitting in front of the screen, many people work “behind” the television set. Who are these people see?

Who controls what will be shown and what won’t? People do not know anything about what happens backstage, and all these people who are working hard “behind” have a big influence on television viewers. Most of the viewers do not know it, but they work in order to control their mind. Even if they think they can have their own opinion on what they are seeing, television has an important influence on people’s thoughts. If people do not know a part of an information, or if they only have one point of view about the news, they can not be really objectives.

In fact, television is absolutely not objective! There are too many possibilities to influence people thanks to television (for politics, or economics managers) than it is a very practical way to introduce some ideas in households and in people’s minds. Television also influences people in their way of consuming goods. It has, in fact, increased the amount of goods purchased per family. Kids sometimes see some toys on television advertisement and want it because it is brand new. They are always influenced by new products coming out and their parents have to buy the toys they want.

Because of television and its commercials, people are willing to buy the same things. So, television is used by brands to promote themselves. That’s why there is a lot of advertising on television, during movies, between programs. Companies use the fact that many people watch television to set their spots when many people will see it. As a result to that, most of households have felt into a society of mass consumption that increases each year. Finally, television has bad effects of people’s healthy development. Researches were made to prove to people that watching television increases people’s obesity.

In fact, people like eating junk food and drinking sodas while watching television. Excess of nibbling between main dishes is not good for people’s body and increases a lot their weight. A lot of American families cannot spend their television time without eating food. They need at least something to put in their mouth to feed them. However, it does not only touch the American culture. As the Media Awareness Network website shows, almost one in four Canadian children, between seven and twelve years old, is obese (researches made by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada).

Moreover, watching too much television during the same period of time is not good for people’s eyes. In fact if people stay focus in the same position and in the dark while watching their favorite show, it will damage their eyes vision. In addition to that, smokers smoke a lot of cigarettes while there are in front of their television set. So, it increases a lot the possibility for them to have a cancer. It also touch people’s health because instead of doing sport people do another one which is “coach potato”. This sport is not a good one for people’s health. As a result, people do not lose ny weight because most of them spend a lot of their free time in front of their television set. However, some people think television is good for everybody because positive points can be seen. In fact, even it influences a lot the weaker; it gives a lot of useful information and is a mean of learning. First, television is a new way of learning. When television first arrived, it was a revolution for people because they could get the chance to have news from it by watching the daily news magazine. It gives people information about what happen all around the world.

It is a mean to have more information so that people can easily make up their mind. In fact, by reading the newspaper, listening to the radio, and then watching documentary shows or news on television, people can increase a lot their knowledge. Television is also seen as a mean to learn. For example, in schools teachers use a lot television to show to their students some documentaries that could be related to their courses. This is seen as an incentive for students. Thanks to it, they can make direct relationships between what their teachers have taught them and what they have seen on television.

As teenagers were born with a television, not as most of the teachers were, the teachers think that using television could interest them more. Laurie Rozakis, a writer, focuses a lot of the good effects television has on people. In fact, in Writing Essentials for the Pre-GED Student, she stresses the fact that television helped her in three different ways. First, it helped her to learn English better, and then, it helped her to learn more about the country she was living in: the United Sates of America. The third way was that television helped her to stay out of trouble.

She did not go outside at night because she was watching the shows she liked the most. Then, television is a way to escape from reality. Sometimes, it helps people dreaming about a new world for example. Some movies can help them traveling. For example, the ones who cannot travel would enjoy watching a travel documentary of the country they are dreaming about. Television also gives the “family model” through shows on television. It is the model everybody dreams about. In addition to that, people who have financial problems or who are in hospital can escape their problems by watching television.

Thanks to that, they forget for some hours what they have to endure every day. Television is also a family time. It gathers people around the same thing. The Media Awareness Network website focuses a lot on the fact that television is good for family values. First, it allows people to spend time together. Nowadays, people do not have a lot of time to spend with their family. As they spend many hours at works and in transportations, they do not get the chance to have time with their family, except during week ends. As a result, television watched at fix hours allowed them to gather and to discuss together about important subjects.

The more information people have from others, the better it is for them and their general culture. As a result to these discussions, children would learn more from it and would become more open-minded. Moreover, they can have the chance to discuss these subjects in class, and give their own opinion to their class. To conclude, the effects the television has on people are an opened debate since many years and would still be in the future. Even if it has bad repercussions, such as fear of the others, violence, mass consumption, it has also good effects. In a way, television increases people’s knowledge.

It gives them more information about an event, and it gathers people round the same sofas to share ideas, opinions and feelings. As the Media Awareness Network website says “Parents should also pay close attention to what their children see in the news since studies have shown that kids are more afraid of violence in news coverage than in any other media content. Fear based on real news events increases as children get older and are better able to distinguish fantasy from reality. ” It has been shown that television is something very important in households, and that many people care a lot about their television and about what is shown.

However, people who control television channels know that and they try to influence people. They know that what they will show will be heard by thousands of people and that it will have an important influence on the society, and sometimes on the consumption. So, people should seriously take into consideration that television has both good and bad effects on them. These people should warn the youngest about what is good and what is bad, and what to do with the massive information the television gives them. BIBLIOGRAPHY Rozakis, Laurie. Essay on Size Zero in Society

Discursive Essay Size zero In our society, image is everything. We strive for what is considered to be the “ideal appearance”. For the modern generation, fashion is uppermost. For some girls our ambition is to become “size zero”. We want or need to show we are following the latest fashion trends. However, recent news reports indicate that size zero models are obsessed with their size that they become anorexic. Being fascinated by the fashion industry myself, it is important to explore the question: “Why should or should not size zero models be allowed to walk on the catwalk? ” Size zero models should not be allowed on the catwalk.

They are a bad influence on teenage girls who ape or desire to look like these size zero “role” models. Young girls who attempt a “zero” do not develop as they should. They are more likely to have severe health concerns later on in life. They are less likely to work and will need a great deal of health care assistance, the tax payer’s will end up bearing the financial strain as they will have to pay more taxes because these girls will require nhs when they start to get health problems. A further argument that we frequently encounter, is that size zero puts pressure on young women who are overweight.

By comparing themselves to “zeros” young women only achieve low self-esteem. They are made to think they are unattractive. They go through the stress of unsafe cosmetic surgeries such as tummy tucks, to appear like fashion icons. Celebrity nutritionist Dr Adam Carey says that, “I think the current vogue is macabre. I think it is obscene and it is very unhealthy. ” It is also argued that many girls who are wanting to become models in the future, put themselves through a lot of anxiety to be emaciated and slim, so they get accepted in the fashion industry.

These girls attempt to try to be lean by starving themselves which can result in eating disorders. A popular singer celebrity called Rihanna states that, “You shouldn’t be pressured into trying to be thin by the fashion industry, because they only want models that are like human mannequins. ” I agree with this statement. I believe you should do what you feel comfortable with, and not do something that will harm yourself and your health. In addition, women that are outsized will stop buying clothes from the shopping malls, as they will sense, that they don’t look tempting when they try on the most recent designer clothes.

This implies, that clothing stores will suffer a financial loss because of size zero models when outsized women make up more than fifty percent of the population and can‘t find clothe that fit them. Statistics show that, “up to 66% of the US population is overweight” Furthermore, size zero may possibly harm our health to a really risky extent. Many size zero models have died of anorexia due to this size zero craze. “In August 2006, 22-year-old Uruguayan model Luisel Ramsol died after starving herself.

She had tried to live on nothing but Diet Coke and lettuce leaves for three months………In November of the same year, 21-year-old Brazilian model Ana Carolina Reston died from anorexia. ” The obsession with size zero could lead to many more such tragedies. Contrary to this, many people argue that size zero models are in fact a good influence on people who are obese in society. Size zero encourages them to lose excess fat from their body. It is also said that there are many more health problems associated with obesity compared to anorexia. If obese people look on size zero models as role models they will eventually become fit and healthy.

Another counter argument is that, most size zero models are naturally skinny, they don’t starve themselves or put stress on themselves to shrink to a size zero. They may look unhealthy at times, but that’s the way their bodies have been made, with a fast metabolism. Models that are naturally size zero should be allowed on the catwalks as they are not damaging their health. Likewise, there are those who say that designer clothes look more striking on really skeletal models. People are more likely to buy designer clothes when they perceive that these models have worn them.

This is an advantage for the designer, as he/she will be making a fortune if his or her designer clothes start selling in high volumes in the shopping malls because of their size zero models. Lastly, many people say that size zero leads to anorexia , eating disorders and health problems. This may not be the case for all. There will be some size zero models who are healthy, and eat their regular balanced diets, full of nutrition, but do not have fattening foods such as butter, meat, sweets and oily food. They just eat the right amount of food that they need for each day. After evaluating these arguments, my conclusion seems inevitable.

The arguments against size zero models outweigh the arguments for size zero models. My question in the introduction, “Why should or should not size zero models be allowed to walk on catwalk? ” has come to a conclusion. My point of view is that the “zeros” shouldn’t be allowed to walk the catwalks. This is because there have been many deaths caused by the size zero trend. Size zero does not look healthy. It does not set a good example for younger girls. I only want to see a skeleton in a museum, not wearing my clothes! Zero isn’t even a real number! Give me a 10, 12, 14 any day! oppression Bibliography By Iram Mahmood 5e 947 words

Effects of Obesity in the United States Navy

When Americans hear the words United States Sailor what image comes to their minds? Do they see the all American boy standing tall, wearing his dress blues uniform with his white hat tilted to the side? Does he look like the sailor on the Cracker Jack box? That used to be the image of the U. S. Sailor back when the Greatest Generation was fighting during World War II. Now, all a person has to do is go online and search U. S. Navy Sailor in the search engine and they will find unlimited pictures and videos of sailors doing every day things as well as supporting our interests around the world.

With the invention of the World Wide Web, sailors are not only asked to do their jobs at sea but also be impeccable ambassadors of the American people on shore. Because of this important part of being a service member, it is imperative that today’s sailor resemble that all American boy or girl. While sailors are adults and must take responsibility for their own actions, lack of training and attention to dietary health has contributed to many sailors discharge from service due to being out of Navy regulated physical standards. The U. S.

Navy celebrated its 235th birthday on October 13th 2010, but the way sailors are being officially evaluated physically is only about 35 years old. Operational Navy Instruction, (OPNAVINST) 6110. 1 was implemented on June 16, 1976 from a directive given by the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO). The stated purpose of this instruction was “To implement a physical fitness program for Navy personnel, regular and reserve, that will meet the need for physical stamina and strength necessary for combat effectiveness and mobilization as directed by Secretary Of The Navy Instruction (SECNAVINST) 6100. ” (Hodgdon, 1999). In the 6110. 1, the term obesity was defined as “excessive accumulation of fat in the body manifested by poor muscle tone, flabbiness and folds, bulk out of proportion to body build, dyspnea (difficult or labored breathing), and fatigue upon mild exertion, all of which detracts from military appearance” (Hodgdon, 1999). The fitness program that was established from this instruction was nothing more than a modified version of an aerobics program developed by a Dr. Ken Cooper.

This aerobics program was a set of warm up exercises and basic calisthenics that were used based on a points system. This first physical fitness instruction did not include a physical fitness test. On July 17, 1980, the Navy issued an updated instruction . This instruction was OPNAVINST 6110. 1A which was virtually identical to the original 6110. 1 with the exception of adding a fitness test. This test was implemented to set certain standards that all sailors would have to adhere to as a way for the Navy to track the physical readiness of its sailors.

For example, a male age 17-25 had to perform a minimum of 30 sit-ups in two minutes; 20 push-ups; four pull-ups (optional); complete a 1. 5 mile run/walk in 16:30 (OPNAVINST 6110. 1A, 1980). On June 29, 1981 Department of Defense (DoD) Directive 1308. 1 was implemented. The biggest difference of this directive was that the Navy implemented a weight control program to add to its physical fitness program. As the Navy started to fine tune its physical testing of its sailors, the chain of command added and subtracted those elements that they believed define a model sailor.

On August 7, 1986 OPNAVISNT 6110. 1C was issued navy wide (Hodgdon, 1999). There were several major changes to the 6110. 1. One of the more severe changes was that all Navy personnel were required to take the Physical Readiness Test (PRT) twice a year. Another change was a health risk screening that needed to be done before a sailor was allowed to participate in the PRT. Yet another change was that the body fat assessment was to be separated from the PRT and was to be conducted as an individual assessment. Under this instruction a new technique and new standards for measuring body fat was established.

One of the most important changes that came from this instruction was that new consequences for failing the body fat were established. Under the new standard body fat assessment, if a sailor was diagnosed as obese they were not allowed to participate in the PRT until cleared by the medical staff. If the sailor was diagnosed as obese consecutively in a 16 month period they were to be screened for separation from active duty. It is because of these changes in how the Navy Chain of Command viewed its sailors, that the sailor themselves had to re-evaluate how they handled their careers. Before the implementation of the 6110. series instructions, all a sailor had to do to be viewed as outstanding was make sure that they were the subject matter experts in their field. This meant reporting for duty early, studying all of the rate training manuals, and following the orders of their superiors. The only physical standard that a sailor had to maintain was be able to complete their duties in an exemplary manner and be able to get through a hatch on a ship to fight a fire if need be. They were not considered a bad sailor, or not good at their job, simply because they filled out their uniform a little bit more than the guy standing next to them.

When it was time to take their rate advancement exam they did not evaluate what that sailor looked like in their uniform, the chain of command just wanted to make sure that the sailor was knowledgeable about his/her job. These days, to be eligible for advancement you not only need to know your job better than the other sailor, you also need to look better than him too. Before the implementation of these new guidelines, a sailor’s evaluation marks were issued based on job performance. With the changes in the physical fitness instruction come changes in the evaluation process as well.

Now if you fail a Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA), it has to be marked and documented on your annual evaluation. Because of the ever changing rules and regulations of the physical fitness standards of the Navy, the Department of the Navy (DON) is now implementing more formal training geared toward nutrition and weight control. With this training, sailors are being taught that there are several benefits to a balanced diet. They are being trained that a healthy diet does not just improve their physical health but it also contributes to their mental health.

Sailors now have the tools they need to start and maintain these healthy eating habits. The Navy Nutrition and Weight Control Self-Study Guide is the Navy’s principal tool that enables service members to improve their health and fitness (Cox, 1996). This guide is being issued to all personnel who are enrolled in the Fitness Enhancement Program (FEP). This program is a mandatory program for those sailors who fail any portion of a PFA. This program is also open to any sailor who wants to learn how to take care of their bodies in a healthy way.

With this new mindset of training sailors to take care of their bodies for health reasons and not just to look like the sailor on the Cracker Jacks box, more sailors are taking this knowledge with them after they transition from to civilian life. There is a new standard now for being a sailor. In the past it was all about going out to the bars with your shipmates and having a good time. With the current tempo of operations, a sailor must be ready physically, as well as mentally, to answer America’s call wherever they are needed. The Navy is no longer turning a blind eye to sailors being out of physical standards.

If sailors cannot balance a healthy lifestyle as well as train for their jobs, they may be the ones standing on the pier waving good bye to their ex-shipmates.
