The Effects of Foreshadowing on the Reader of John Steinbeck’s of Mice and Men

A tool authors use to hint of events happening later in the novel or story is foreshadowing. Through foreshadowing, an author may surprise or impact the reader. In John Steinbeck’s tragic fiction novel, Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck uses foreshadowing to make readers anticipate the ending of the novel in which Lennie kills Curley’s wife, and ultimately gets shot by George. Foreshadowing is shown in many key events throughout the chapters, and it isn’t until later that the reader will realize the importance of the seemingly unimportant events. The readers wonder what the purpose of those events are and how they will feel when the purpose of the events come clear.

Foreshadowing in Of Mice and Men impacts readers with intense emotions and makes readers understand the purpose of the foreshadowing. George and Lennie are the two main characters of the novel, and have escaped from trouble that occurred while they were employed in Weed. According to George, Lennie ruined their opportunities in Weed because “he seen this girl in a red dress. Dumb bastard like he is, he wants to touch ever’thing he likes. Just wants to feel it. So he reaches out to feel this red dress an’ the girl lets out a squawk, and that gets Lennie all mixed up, and he holds on ’cause that’s the only thing he can think to do.

Well, this girl squawks and squawks.” (Steinbeck 41). This shows how Lennie likes to touch soft things, and how Lennie can’t let go of something when he’s frightened. These two traits of Lennie foreshadows how Lennie accidentally kills Curley’s wife. The reader would feel bad for Lennie from reading about the Weed incident because he was misunderstood. The reader would feel like this would not be a big problem since it was in the past, and that this might be a one-time problem. However, the purpose of what happened in Weed was to warn the readers that this is a potentially bad habit of George, and that it will happen again.

Once George and Lennie find a job on a new ranch in the south of Soledad, they meet new people. Slim is the wise, old mule-driver on the ranch and is highly respected. A little before the arrival of George and Lennie, Slim’s dog gave birth to nine puppies. Slim “drowned four of ’em right off.” and he “kept the biggest”. (Steinbeck, 35). Foreshadowing is used in this scene because the biggest puppies are kept while the weak and small puppies were killed. Lennie can be seen as a small puppy because he is not normal. Lennie evidently suffers from a mental disability that caused trouble for George, and eventually Lennie’s demise.

The small puppies that were drowned can be viewed as Lennie while the big puppies can be viewed as George, Slim, Candy, Carlson and Curley. The purpose of the drowning of the weak puppies was to show that the weak or disabled cannot survive, and that the strong will prosper. Readers will feel bad for the drowned puppies, and will also feel bad for Lennie in the resolution of the novel. Carlson is another worker on the ranch alongside Candy who is another ranch-hand that is approaching old age. Candy owns a dog who, according to Carlson, “is so God damn old he can’t hardly walk. Stinks like hell, too.” (Steinbeck, 36). Soon enough, Carlson insists that “[the dog stinks to beat hell. Tell you what.

I’ll shoot him for you” (Steinbeck, 45). Carlson shooting Candy’s dog foreshadows George shooting Lennie. Carlson uses a type of gun called a “Luger”, and coincidentally George takes that gun to kill Lennie. Another use of foreshadowing is that Carlson unintentionally teaches George how to shoot Lennie painlessly. Carlson explains that “The way I’d shoot him, he wouldn’t feel nothing. I’d put thegun right there.” He pointed with his toe. “Right back of the head. He wouldn’t even quiver.” (Steinbeck 45). The purpose of Carlson shooting Candy’s dog is to foreshadow the death of Lennie. Readers will feel bad for Candy and his dog, but then have a moment of surprise and shock when understanding that Lennie was killed exactly like Candy’s dog.

Foreshadowing fortells and implies of events happening later in the novel. The purpose of foreshadowing is to create suspense and apprehension because it makes the readers guess or predict coming events. Readers may wonder the purpose of the events and foreshadowing. Also, foreshadowing may impact a reader emotionally. How readers feel during or after reading a book is what makes them enjoy a book. People should care about foreshadowing because it is part of what makes reading enjoyable, and what makes readers read for pleasure.

Opening Chapter of Mice and Men

John Steinbeck displays contrast between Leonie, is a giant of a man ‘a huge man’, ponderous in his walk and has the mind of a young child. Therefore, is dramatically effective as it leaves the reader uncertain about the situation as we think what do these different characters have In common, why are they together, are they up to something? The reader soon discovers that they have a very close bond. This Is because they both share the same dream of owning their own ranch, after many hard working years, moving from ranch o ranch, living in complete poverty and working for next to nothing they finally try to achieve this life long dream.

At the end of the beginning chapter Leonie pleads with George to tell him over and over again about their dream ranch, when Lenis main task will be the rabbits. Again Steinbeck shows how immature Leonie is, I think George and Leonie have a bond which represent father and son. George being the father not very patient always telling Leonie off and Leonie very childlike keeps rebelling. Steinbeck emphasis his writing skills by revealing a Blvd description of the place and atmosphere ‘A few miles south, On the sandy bank under the trees, shade climbed up the hills towards the top’.

This type of writing method is effective because it’s so detailed that it becomes vivid and lifelike in our imagination, so that we feel like we have become involved in story, we the reader feel connected to the novel. In the opening chapter, Steinbeck immediately introduces the idea of isolation and loneliness and the idea of the men living temporary worker lives, with no real direction. Steinbeck cleverly uses the setting to convey these ideas. The path George and Leonie are walking on is described as ‘A path beaten hard by boys’. Beaten hard by tramps who came wearily down from the highway In the evening to Jungle, up near water’ and ‘an ash pile made by many fires’. Not only do these quotes describe the setting, they also give us a detailed description of the men’s tragic, Isolated lives as well. I en mall themes touting ten story Is loneliness, tons Is an Inevitable Tact AT Tie that not even the strongest can avoid. In his novel, Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck illustrates the loneliness of California ranch life in the early sass’s.

Throughout the story, the reader discovers the many sources of solitude, primarily being discrimination and prejudice, resulting in loneliness and isolation. One of the most important things that are really needed is a friend. Without friends, people would suffer from loneliness and solitude. The characters in this novel are intrigued yet envious of the special friendship shared by George and Leonie because they do not have that in their life. However the theme in chapter 1 is about animal imagery. Tending the rabbits represents all the ideology of the free and happy spirit to Leonie.

He doesn’t consciously understand the totality of his dream, because by wanting to tend the rabbits he is really expressing his want to make something of himself and live simply, ‘off the fatty the Ian’. If asked, George would go on and on about settling down with a wife and raising a family on his own little farm, Leonie would simply say he wanted to tend the rabbits. This is dramatic effective because the reader assume that its going to be very difficult for George as he has to stay with Leonie, but also makes the reader wait in excitement for the next chapter to see how the main characters will survive.

If the reader were to analyses the story in a more detailed way they would soon discover that the rabbit is the symbol of all that he desires, and the particular characteristic, which is endemic to rabbits, is their softness of fur. When Leonie touches something soft he is that much closer to discovering his dream. So, he is reluctant to halt any act, which allows him to caress something soft. Any force that comes between him and his ‘dream’ is at great risk, cause Leonie is dangerous when angry ‘don’t get to tend the rabbits! ‘ Suddenly his anger arose. ‘God damn you,’ he cried.

Unknown to Leonie, the mice may have had a dream Just like him. Though most mice probably would not have dreamt about owning their own land, a dream may have still existed. Maybe the mice would have wanted to live some place safe from people. Dreaming of a place in which a mouse could eat all the time not having to search for food, Leonie may have killed them. This harsh reality is exactly the same as what had happened to Leonie. It is unable to be disproved that what George had done to Leonie in his time of weakness was not the same as what Leonie had done to the mice in their time of helplessness.

Possibly, that was how the mice wanted to die though, happy picturing their dreams in their heads. On the other hand, one is not to be sure that these mice did not die in excruciating pain, paralyzed by the touch of this enormous creature. However these poor creatures died, they were unable to live the rest of their lives. Overall , ten TLS chanter Is aromatic as It concentrates more on ten ascription AT ten atmosphere, this creates uncertainty for the reader as we do not know what is going to happen.

I believe the author has displayed little information on each particular character so the reader believes that the novel is ambiguous. The reader’s imagination starts to take over and consider what and who are George and Leonie. Already the audiences have become Judgmental about the main characters this highlights the writers skills towards the physical appearance of the George and Leonie, which may persuade the audience to have a specific view on the characters.

Of Mice and Men Curley’s Wife

mice When John Steinbeck wrote of mice and men, he showed there was a lot of inequality during the 1930’s. This essay shall attempt to portray the inequality of women in Steinbeck’s novel. George the main character of the story, first sets his eyes on Curley’s wife, his initial impression of her is that he has “never seen no piece of jail bait worse than her” (Steinbeck 2006 p36). In the novel Curley’s wife is a beautiful woman who constantly shows her beauty to the men on the ranch. She dresses inappropriately for a woman married to the boss’s son. She had full, roughed lips and wide spaced eyes, her fingernails are red and her hair hangs in little rolled clusters, like sausages”. (p34 Steinbeck 2006). Curley’s wife always wanders around the ranch in search for someone to talk to. However, the ranch workers stay wary of her as they believe she will only give them trouble. Curley’s wife is isolated, self absorbed and a dreamer. Curley doesn’t seem to have any respect for his wife at all, Candy tells George (Steinbeck p30) why Curley wears only one glove on his hand which is soaked in Vaseline so it is kept soft for his wife and George finds this disgusting.

This is degrading to her as she is just there for his pleasure. She is just a wife who is a trophy to show off hence the saying ‘trophy wife’. Dreams are heavily involved in this book. Like many characters in the book, Curley’s wife also has a dream. She dreams of being a film star. She appears to be trying to get the men into trouble but her dreams and frustrations show that she is lonely like the other people on the ranch. She hated her upbringing, so when a guy told her she had the potential to be a movie star and he would be in touch, finally she found a way out.

However, being a young naive girl like she was, she fell for his story and she never heard or even saw the guy again. Instead of Hollywood and all its glam, she ended up marrying young and getting trapped on the ranch. Being the only woman there and no one to talk to makes you emphasise with her and soften towards her and feel her loneliness. Curley is not interested in her dream and there is only one person she tells her dream to and that is Lennie. I think she tells ennie because she knows he doesn’t comprehend what’s going on and it goes through one ear and out the other but at least she’s telling somebody her dream even if they don’t quite understand but ironically the one person she tells is the same person who takes it away for good. John Steinbeck makes very good use of dreams throughout the novel. Each character is shown to have greater depth than we might have expected and we are able to see how lonely and disappointed their lives are through the quite humble ambitions that they have.

The men seem to want security in their lives whereas Curley’s wife wants to escape from the boredom and lonesomeness that surrounds her and get rid of the title ‘Curley’s wife’. Although Curley’s wife may be considered static, she does not change throughout the novel Curley’s wife is essential to the plot. Therefore, she is not simply “unnamed” because she is unimportant. Curley’s wife is unnamed for several reasons. She is first and for most not worthy of a name. A name implies that a relationship can exist.

Curley’s wife is not capable of a relationship; she is not worthy. With a name also comes identification and familiarity. If we were to feel any sort of empathy for Curley’s wife, we may not understand or appreciate Lennie’s role in her death. We may actually care that she is dead. There is also the historical role of women in society. As a writer of social issues, Steinbeck wants the reader to recognize the inferior role of women in the world. The lack of name demotes Curley’s wife to insignificant status.

She is not as important as the men in the story. Curley’s wife is very flirtatious. In fact she is so flirtatious that the farmers refer to her as ‘having the eye’. The men see her in the ranch as the cause of many problems like her husband’s short heated attitude and the fear that they will be sacked. But as the story is about to reach its climax, she begins to add more complexity to her own character by letting Lennie in on her dreams, what she is all about. Here she reveals that she doesn’t have the eye at all but she is just lonely.

She says that she dislikes Curley because he is always annoyed and so she comes around the farm to get away and find someone that she can talk to. In this conversation with Lennie she tells him the dream that she had for herself. She dreamed of becoming a famous actress and she would have wanted to live in Hollywood. But just like many of the other characters her dream went unrealised. So instead of being an actress living a glamorous life in Hollywood, she is stuck living in a ranch with a husband that she really doesn’t like, living in a ranch full of loneliness not havin

Of Mice and Men – in What Ways Could This Novel

Steinbeck makes it clear that most the workers on the ranch are lonely, as working in a ranch is hard work and no one really wants to work really hard every day Just to eat and survive, so you can say that the people working In the ranch have no alma In life, living temporary lives, oath beaten by hard boys down from the ranches to swim In the deep pool, and “A beaten hard by tramps”.

Also as Leonie and George had to walk long way to the ranch or to work this may have been the case for lots of people in the ‘ass as that was the time of the Great Depression and the Wall Street Crash In where the economy of the USA fell and everyone was out of jobs and money, you can say that this is tragic In some way as it shows how hard people tried Just to find work and how the Depression bought loneliness onto the people of the ASSAI. Some people in the ranch vive more lonely lives than others. One of the loneliest persons on the ranch has to be Curly wife.

As she Is the only women on the ranch she feels Isolated and left out from the men and feels different. Also no one really wants to talk to her as she is the wife of the boss’s son and no one talks to her out of fear of getting into a fight with Curly who has power upon the ranch to fire people as he is the boss’s son and the workers did not want to get fired as there were no Jobs around. This can be seen as tragic as If a worker Is accidentally seen communicating with Curly wife Curly will ant him fired or will want to fight him as Curly is seen as a character as aggressive.

Also Curry’s wife is seen as a “flirt” or just wants attention as she is the only female on the ranch, but Curly doesn’t want her to talk to anyone. As she has no female friends on the ranch, men are her only option, but they do not want to talk to her. So this really frustrates her and makes her lonely. Even thought Curry’s wife is mentioned throughout the book, she is never called by her name, from her lack of a personal definition you can say that the men on the ranch don’t see her a normal human being UT as an “object”. She says to Leonie “Think I don’t like to talk to someone ever once in a while? This shows that she is trying to tell Leonie that she is desperate to talk to someone and have a friend that she can Just talk to, you can say this is tragic as Curry’s wife can’t even have one of life’s simplest things “a conversation” or a friend. However, she believes that one day she would make It to the movies and become an actor, “l Alan used to level like this. I could made something of myself… Maybe I will yet. ” because of this extreme loneliness she wants to think of herself as having a true ahead of her, but in reality she does not.

So she is living in two different lives, but in reality she Is living in a boring ranch with no one to talk to. You can say this Is tragic as the ranch brings peoples hope up Into believing that they will make it big one day but in reality the ranch crushes this dream and the workers on the ranch will 1 OFF Another point about Curly wife is she escapes all this “loneliness” by dying, when she is killed by Leonie, Steinbeck writes, and “The meanness and the planning of the discontent and the ache for attention were all gone from her face.

This means that Curly wife is dead and now she looks happy when she is dead as she has escaped from being lonely. This can be seen as tragic as you can say that the only escape from loneliness is death. Another character that can be seen as lonely is Crooks. Crooks suffers from loneliness because he is the only black person on the ranch, and black people suffered lots of racial abuse from white people in the ‘ass because black people didn’t have human rights. Also he lives by himself as no one likes him as he is black, this makes Crooks even lonelier.

Crooks does not take part in any social activity in the ranch, he is so lonely that he turns to reading books in his spare time. Steinbeck shows Crooks character someone who is desperate for company, but Crooks really does not show it. This can be seen as tragic as everyone is racist to Crooks on the ranch and no one likes him. Also when Leonie enters Crooks room, Crooks talks to Leonie even though he knows that Leonie doesn’t understand him as much, but still continues to talk as he is “not lonely’ any more as he has someone to talk to.

Crooks says, “A guy goes nuts if he ant got nobody… I tell way a guy gets too lonely and he gets sick. ” This shows that he knows what it’s like to be lonely and what it can do to somebody, this can be seen as tragic as no one should really know what it really feels like to be left out and lonely for a very long time even though there are always people around you and those people neglect you for something that you don’t choose to have – the color of your skin.

Another character that is portrayed as lonely by Steinbeck is Candy. Candy is an old man who is physically disabled and who used to work on the ranch, he is disabled due to an accident in the past. You can say that candy is lonely because he is old and no one really wants to become friends with someone who is old, also Candy only companionship was his dog that got shot in the back of his head because he was getting old and useless Just like Candy.

As Candy now has no friends he over hears Leonie and George talk about their “dream place”, as Candy wants to escape this loneliness he wants to Join Leonie and George in their dream place, so Candy offers his saving towards the dream place and making it a “reality’. “Expose I went in with you guys. ” This shows that Candy is fed up from being in the ranch and wants to escape his past; also he knew he was going to be sacked soon as he old and cannot work so he put his money into the “Dream place”.

This can be seen as tragic as you can say that people will give all their money away to escape from loneliness, and you can say that money does not always bring happiness. Another character that can be seen as lonely is Curly, even though he has a wife. No one really likes him in the ranch as he is aggressive and he likes to look down upon the workers on the ranch, this leads to Curly having no friends in the ranch, also Curly goes to the brothel house even though he has a wife, you can say that his wife may not like him that much or satisfy him so he turns to the brothel.

This is tragic as Curly wants to be respected and to be seen as someone with power, no one him, also as Curly is intimidated by bigger men, he hates Leonie who is twice his size, as Lien’s character is seen by the workers on the ranch as “innocent” and childlike” the workers seem to take Lien’s side when Curly attacks Leonie out of frustration and anger.

Curly as a character can be seen as tragic as no one really likes him and he has no real friends and no one seems to respect him but only fear him because of his position in the ranch, even his own wife doesn’t really like him as Curly always controls her and makes her feel lonely in her own ways and Curly even has to go to a brother to satisfy his sexual needs even though he has a wife, from this you can say that Curly is truly lonely.

Another character that is portrayed as lonely towards the end of the book is George, as he killed Leonie, you can say that he now has no burden on his shoulders any more, but you can also say that George now has no true friend and will now suffer loneliness like the other men on the ranch. This could be seen as tragic as George killed Leonie out of “Love” and did Leonie as favor as Leonie would’ve been sent to a mental asylum and in the ‘ass asylums were bad places to be, so George did something out of “Love” and now suffers loneliness and not having a true friend.

So in conclusion loneliness is seen tragic in a number of ways in this book and Steinbeck uses lots of means to escape loneliness; such as death, giving away all your possessions, and even turning to books. Also doing something you may think is good will bring something bad, like when George killing Leonie out of love and friendship, George will now suffer from loneliness, So “Loneliness” in Of Mice and Men is a major theme as all the characters are affected by it and Steinbeck shows all the tragedies of loneliness and he also shows what people would do Just to escape this “Loneliness”.

John Steinbeck’s Novella Of Mice and Men

Most people are familiar with the phrase “it’s too good to be true”, dreams coming true is an example of this common misconception. In ‘s novella Of Mice and Men, he uses numerous applications of juxtaposition, symbolism, foreshadowing, and other literary devices to prove dreams are unlikely to always come true because even the best plans can fail.
Steinbeck highlights numerous dream failures between different people through various applications of juxtaposition. In Chapter 5, Lennie talks about the dreams he hopes to achieve with George while Curley’s wife talks about her theatrical aspirations. According to Curley’s wife “I could go with that show. But my ‘old lady wouldn’t let me if [I would have gone] I wouldn’t be living like this, you bet” (86).

Lennie replies, “We gonna have a little place-an’ rabbits” (86). Lennie’s and Curley’s wife’s dreams, lets the audience to see the similarities and foreshadows that Lennie and George dreaming of getting their place with the rabbits and Curley’s Wife dreaming of becoming an actress would be done in vain. Chapter 5 highlights the struggle that Lennie experiences both emotionally and mentally he has a hard time controlling his strength throughout the novella. “I don’t want to hurt you, but George will be mad if you yell. I’ve done a bad thing. I’ve done a very bad thing” (91). Lennie never intentionally tried to kill anyone, but he cannot control his strength. This leads to shattering his peace of mind, which soon can also shatter his dream of getting his own place with George.

Steinbeck uses numerous applications of symbolism to represent rather than saying how and why dreams can fail. Chapter 1 reveals Lennie’s dream is to gets a farm with rabbits, which helps reveal Lennie’s innocence through . “isn’t fit to lick the boots of no rabbit. You’d forget ’em and let ’em go hungry” (6). It seems that Lennie likes the rabbits, but unfortunately his strong affection will soon lead to his tragic downfall.

The soft animals then symbolize innocence and its elimination in cruel world. The dead mouse in Lennie’s pocket symbolizes his love and strength and foreshadows the fate of Curley’s wife, Lennie’s puppy, George and Lennie’s dream and Lennie. “Jus’ a dead mouse, George. I didn’t kill it. Honest! I found it. I found it dead” (3). Mice represent a fantasy for Lennie. The title is a good hint that mice are significant in this situation, but the first mouse that we encounter is a dead one which foreshadows the future fate of dream.

Steinbeck uses numerous applications of foreshadowing to get the audience to visualize and predict future events pertaining to George’s and Lennie’s dream becoming a reality. “Just wanted to pet that girl’s dress-just wanted to pet it like it was a mouse” (11). This situation reveals Lennie likes to feel soft objects, no matter what it is-doesn’t realize if it’s wrong or right. This foreshadows Lennie’s death through examples of his innocence can lead to his unfortunate downfall because he doesn’t understand the effects of his actions or learns from his mistakes.

Likewise, Lennie’s innocence can lead to the unfortunate downfall of his dream with George. Lennie says, “I never meant [any] harm” (32) later in the novella. Lennie never means any harm in anything he does which shows he will have trouble in the future, he did not mean to get in, the death of his pup and Curley’s wife for example.

John Steinbeck exemplifies the fact that even dreams planed out in advance can still fail. Dreams are always visions of what people want and to make those dreams reality one must work hard and do what it takes to accomplish what they want.

Essay Summary of Of mice and men

When you lose the person you relied on, if the person gives you material support, you will lose the ability to survive; if the person gives you confidence, love, and hope that makes you have the courage to walk through the difficult life, but he has been taken away so easily, you will be fallen to the marsh of despair and loneliness, and never get a day to see light again. People are not trust other people. Both Leonie and George are one of them. Leonie was like child. He likes to touch soft things around him but always brings harassment o them, he was so easy to get afraid and bathed his face in tears.

He was just a child, but god gave him the strength that he cannot control, gave him duty that a child cannot handled. Everything around Leonie was so difficult, he cannot understood why he and George need to go around the whole country to find a job, he cannot understood why George was always get mad on him but never say that he going to leave him. Leonie cannot be independent, so he chose to rely on George, or actually, he must rely on George to survive in the dark age they live, the age of high-unemployment and starvation.

Maybe he mentioned that he was relying on George too much and really felt sorry about it, maybe he just sat there and receive all of the help that George gave him and felt nothing. He doesn’t really understand what the thing he should do is and what’s not. But George does not care, he just spend his love, money, and time on Leonie selfless, because he knows, that they cannot live without each other. Many people think that Leonie relies on George too much, theft the reason lead him to death. Its right, but I think that actually,

George will have a more painful life without Leonie than Lien’s life without George. The relationship between them is like a mouse and a man, mouse cannot get food without the man, and man will feed the mouse and get happiness from it. Mouse without the man will died on the street, the man without the mouse owns nothing except loneliness. Leonie and George are not just relying on each other, they also rely on a dream they have. “Someday—-we’re going to get the jack together and we’re going to have a little house and a couple of acres an’ a cow and some pigs and—“.

An’ live off the fat the Ian, an’ have rabbits”. It is just simple dream about life, a better life that can let them get reed of the instability and vagrancy life. The dream Leonie and George had that has a premise. “Because I got you to look after me, and me to get look after you, and that’s why. ” They relied on each other, and lived in this model for a long time. Back to the day that aunt asked Clara George to take care of Leonie in the life after, what’s the feeling of George? They were just normal friends, they live in a easy life, but now he has to face a huge trouble.

It becomes George’s responsibility, it’s too heavy for him, but it was the destiny that he must accept. Leonie doesn’t make George fell will at first, he likes to touch everything that was soft around him, it caused a lot of mice’s dead body, but through the time, George found out, that in his heart, it is quiet warm to take care of someone. The friendship between Leonie and George becomes more indestructible in front of the trouble, only death can separate them, they are the closest people in the world in their mind. We all know that George was a lonely kid, too.

Maybe in his mind, although he doesn’t admit, he also relied on Leonie too, because its the only friend it left now. A long time of relying will becomes a precious love. I rely on my parents, because I need people to nurture me when I cannot earn my life myself, We stay together for a long time, because we formed love, the love between family members. I rely on my friends, because I need more people to play with me, to talk with me, to help me when I cannot solve problems by myself, of course I will do the same thing to them. We helped each other, sharing the ideas, it becomes friendship.

Many people said that relying on other people means that you have lose your freedom, in my opinion it’s Leonie of right. When the people you rely on betrayed you, what will you feel? Very hurt right? When you want to help your friends, but you found out that you don’t have the ability to do that, you cannot carry out your responsibility, what will you feel? Relying on other people will bring a lot of hurt, like Leonie. “You never give a thought to George, he been doing nice things for you all time. When he got a piece of pie, you always get half or more in half.

An’ if there was any ketchup, why he’d give it all to you. ” It is the word that Aunt Clara in Lien’s imagination told to him. Leonie always receive too much from George, he knows that, but he has nothing to do with, because he always makes things getting worse. He can only cried to his imagination, tried to lie to himself that he tried to help George but not just relied on him. Leonie will die. When the first time read this book, I have mentioned that. Without George, he may died by starvation. He always gets into trouble, more and more, bigger and bigger.

Every time, George saved him. In Lien’s mind, George is like God. He can save my life, he can talk with me, he promised to buy a rabbit for me, it is the thought in Lien’s mind. That’s the reason that Leonie said: “l never forget the things you told me, George. ” At last, George used gun, shot Lien’s head and end his life. In my mind, Leonie was died in happiness; he died in a soft dream, not danger or fear. If Curler doesn’t trust George and came up himself to shot Leonie, it will be different. But cannot imagine the life that George has after that.

Steinbeck presents Crooks

Steinbeck presents Crooks as practical and intelligent. This is shown in chapter in the passage “rubber boots” “alarm clock” and the “California Civil Code” book. The books show he reads and cares about his Rights. It also shows that he is practical and active with his alarm clock. It can alternatively mean that he has to be Intelligent to protect himself from getting beaten by the boss If he is late to which he needs to be protecting himself from horse manure.

Also with the Californian civil code to be mauled” suggests he attacked the book with anger which could show a bitter hatred the way that people like him are treated Ilke outsiders causes him to lament his loneliness even in his home state. Steinbeck also presents Crooks as permanent and doesnt move around with evidence supporting this Is, “battered magazines and a few dirty books on a special shelf over his bunk. It show how he gets beaten down by loneliness and prejudicial treatment of that he Is the only black man on the ranch. The word “special shelf” suggests the organisation In his home showing that he Ilkes o be stationary and kept whereas it could also mean he has to stay there by the boss and also live alone rather than mixing with white people so Crooks has to live alone and makes full use of living in the barn.

B) His character shows us how coloured people were treated in the 1930’s. It tells us that they were treated as second-class citizens and weren’t worthy to share anything with non-coloured people, we know this due to Crook’s having “his bunk in the harness room”, I think that it is because his boss doesn’t think it’s right for Crook’s to share a bunkhouse with the other men n the ranch, so Crook’s is forced to sleep in the barn.

Shows how everyone targeted him as inferior because of the colour of the skin. The separation of his bunk implies that because of his skin colour no one wants to sleep in the same room as him as they think that Crooks isnt worthy of living with them and so they show their racial hatred towards him by their abuse in calling him a “Nigger”. Due to this, Crooks could turn to books for company which are the only thing that does not consider him as an outcast.
