The Movie “Remember the Titans” Brings Up the Issue of Racism in Sports

It is interesting how people used sports or some kind of group activity to overcome racism. For example “Remember the Titans” one of the best movies that has shown people how they have overcome racism legacy by using a sport, which was football. At the beginning of the movie, it was not easy for them but as days past with arguments, and fights they got to know each other, and both white and black men realized that they were all the same that nothing was different only the color. They got along really well that they would sing songs and sit in the same table together with no problems some of them got to love each other like brothers like Gerry Bertier, and Julius Campbell (Ryan Hurst, and Wood Harris). Coach Herman Boone and Coach Bill Yoast (Denzel Washington, and Will Patton) made one of the large impacts in people by showing that color doesn’t make any differences between ‘white, blue, black, or orange” (Remember the Titans) because at the end everybody is the same.

Movies like this, Remember the Titans, make a lot of the people change the way of thinking, and their hatred against other kinds of people, though many of the people won’t change. Remember the Titans is a movie where “the direction of Boaz Yakin made bruising” in a huge amount of people in which “Bruckheimer thought he was making an art film” (schickel). The broad did not think they would actually hurt people internally but in reality they did because it was when segregation was going on. When coach Yoast told his players that a colored coach, Coach Boone, was going to replace him as head coach the whole team decided to quit and not play for the colored coach.

As Coach Boone came in “Coach Yoast was expected to become his assistant coach”(Ebert), but Coach Yoast didn’t want to be his assistant at all. Since, Coach Yoast’s team had quit, he did not want for them to lose their scholarships. So, he had no other choice and to be his assistant coach just so his boys would play and not lose their scholarships. When the whole team came together for the camp, blacks and whites, there was a lot of anger between them and parents. The broad never thought they would bring to much drama to the team and the family. Although Remember the Titans is a movie where there was always anger and hatred.

When Coach Boone takes everybody to the camp he doesn’t use the camp as for practice. Instead he uses it to end racism, hatred, and make them understand that color doesn’t matter they are all the same. One of the literally element that is used in this movie is compare and contrast where Coach Boone quotes, “hatred destroyed my family, now listen take a lesson from the dead if we don’t come together right now in this hollowed ground we too will be destroyed just like them, I don’t care if you don’t like each other but you will respect each other and maybe play this game like men” (Remember the Titans). Meaning that no matter what, they have to find a way to overcome their hatred among them and everybody else. As they practice they realized their mistakes and like Gerry and Julius they both came together after their last argument after practice when Julius responds to Gerry “attitude reflects leadership” (Remember the Titans).

Even though back in time when segregation was going on people would watch the movie but like Robert Ebert said “it is more about football than race relation, and it wants us to leave the theater feeling not angry or motivated, but good” (Ebert). People would watch the movie because of the sport and because it would make people think and understand a little of racism. When the whole team understood the message that Coach Boone had told them at the camp they all came together and as a team they won most of the games.

As they got close to one of the most impotent games Gerry got into a car accident and was not able to play the important game. As Robert Ebert said I was moved by a scene near the end where an injured white player, who once said he would not play with blacks, now only wants his black “brother” in the hospital (Ebert). As where there is some other scene similar to that one where he breaks up with his girlfriend than to forget about his teammates that he has come really close to them. Gerry and Julius understood the concept that hatred would destroy each other and that they all had to come together no matter what others would say. After watching this amusing movie I understood that no matter where your from, what color you have we all are the same. thanks to this movie a lot of our people change maybe not al lot of us but most of them.

Remember the Titans Movie Narrative Essay

Sherry Holloway Analysis Essay Remember the Titans Based on actual events that took place in 1971, this movie is about the racial and social tensions of the South. Alexandria, Virginia is a community torn apart by racial hatred and the order to integrate their public high schools. Reluctantly, the school board replaces Bill Yoast (Will Patton), the popular white coach, with Herman Boone (Denzel Washington), a reputable black coach, as head coach of the T. C. Williams Titans football team. Yoast, under an invitation from Boone, accepts the position as coach of the defensive line.

Together they inspire, not just the team, but the town to “Trust the soul of a man rather than the look of him. ” This is a brilliant movie that not only entertains, but teaches a life changing lessons. Remember the Titans shows its viewers to look further than a person’s outward appearance and look at a person’s soul. Racism and football is the backdrop for the clash of leadership styles and personal perspectives that each man must learn and understand in order to become a winning team.

Furthermore, this movie goes beyond the lesson of racism, it also teaches unity, trust, loyalty, and integrity. First, while they are at football camp the racial tensions come to a head and cause an outpour of hatred as the coaches integrate the all-white team with the all-black team. It’s not until one white player is partnered with one black player and forced to find out personal information do they start to realize they are all somewhat the same on the inside. Another lesson that came out in this part of the film is that not all prejudices occur between different ethnic groups.

Ronnie Bass (Kip Pardue) arrives at football camp, with long blonde hair, just having moved from California. The team quickly nicknames him “Sunshine” because they assume that since he is from California and has long hair, he must be gay. Next, unity is brought to light when the captain of the all-white team, Gerry Bertier (Ryan Hurt) confronts the captain of the all-black team, Julius Campbell (Wood Harris) about his team playing as individuals and not a team. Things start to turn around when Julius tells Gerry “Actions eflect leadership, captain”, that’s when Gerry realizes he is not being a good leader and letting the team down. Additionally, when the team gets back from camp they quickly realize the town does not share their newly unified team loyalty and some of the team members start to regress and lose their trust in unity. Once the team rallies and shows the town that they are working together and are loyal regardless of skin color most of the town follows the lead of the football team and accepts the new coach and team members.

Unfortunately, not all the town is so accepting and some try to sabotage a football game, with the officiating, to cause the team to lose. Coach Yoast sees what is happening and stops it, showing his loyalty is to the team and not the school board. Finally, the team is losing in the State Championship and Coach Yoast is still letting his pride stand in the way of asking Coach Boone for help with the defensive line.

It takes Coach Yoast’s nine year old daughter, Sheryl (Hayden Panettiere), encouraging him to trust a man’s soul rather than his looks to finally unite the two coaches. All in all, Remember the Titans shows how reverence is a stern antidote for racial hatred and bigotry. The sport of football became a workshop for teaching the young and old about racial harmony, trust, and loyalty. People said that it could not work, black and white, but the Titans made it work every day.
