Romeo and Juliet Persuasive Essay

Romeo and Juliet, one of William Shakespeare’s arguably most renowned plays, heavily relies on the theme of love. Although, one must explore what types of love this refers to. Romantic love is probably most obvious, this love is communicated between the two main characters throughout majority of the play. Platonic and familial love is also predominantly displayed amongst a few of the main characters in the play. Shakespeare plays around with the idea of love throughout the whole play and makes the viewer contemplate about love in a richer sense. Shakespeare’s audience also would have had very different perspectives of love and marriage compared to the ones we have today.

The lust between Romeo and Juliet can easily be mistaken for love. The contrast between love and lust can be very drastic. Lust is superficial when only the appearance in considered, this could be called “love at first sight”. The first clue of Romeo’s feelings towards Juliet is in the first act, scene five so it’s somewhat close to the beginning of the play. “Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight! For I ne’er saw true beauty till this night.” This implies that Romeo’s temporary obsession with Rosaline was nothing in comparison to the emotions he was feeling for Juliet. Although these feelings were rushed, they were extremely strong. Perhaps Romeo and Juliet’s love is fate and their love was due to the stars. This could mean that Shakespeare suggests that the universe played a significant role in the establishment of their love. Despite their love being forbid by the Capulet and Montague families, they find themselves drawn to each other regardless. All in all, Shakespeare puts forth romantic love as a force of nature, so strong that it surpasses familial customs and life itself due to their united act of suicide at the end of the play.

Romeo and Juliet is usually thought to be a play solely about romantic love. This is partially true but many of the background characters experience love that is platonic. This form of love is demonstrated by best friends Romeo and Mercutio. I believe that Shakespeare intentionally added Mercutio into the play to balance out the naïve and fickle personality of Romeo. While Romeo has an idealistic perspective of love, Mercutio almost acts as his conscience. We can also identify the love Romeo feels for Mercutio the moment he became so furious that Tybalt killed him and wanted revenge. The significance of Romeo’s feelings of revenge is that just a few lines ago he was refusing to fight Tybalt since Romeo knew that they were family through his marriage with Juliet. However, Romeo’s feelings of love towards Mercutio and the rage he was experiencing over his death became so strong that he momentarily forgot about his relationship with Juliet. This proves that Romeo would go to great lengths to manifest his love for Mercutio. This dialogue spoken by Romeo, “fire-eye’d fury be my conduct now” resonates with Romeo’s feelings of fury and also well portrays his love for Mercutio. Shakespeare did a great job of showcasing the platonic love between Romeo and Mercutio by his well thought out choice of character backgrounds and sequence of events.

During the Elizabethan times, most people believed that love wasn’t an essential part of marriage. Almost all marriages of the upper class were arranged. Love was something that came after marriage, rather than before. Similarly, Paris’ love for Juliet was the result of following tradition, not passion. He thought she was good contender for a wife and consulted her father to arrange their marriage. This shows his shallow, unpassionate approach towards love. He even admits to Friar Laurence that in his hustle to rush the wedding, he hadn’t discussed anything love related with Juliet. “Immoderately she weeps for Tybalt’s death, and therefore have I little talked of love.” This is a form of trivial love that Shakespeare decided to portray in this play. Several metaphors that Shakespeare used helped illustrate this. In Act V, Scene 3, Paris went to the tomb to mourn Juliet and says, “Sweet flower, with flowers thy bridal bed I strew.” Paris compares Juliet to a flower and her tomb to a bridal bed. This could show a slight sign of remorse on Paris’ side for not talking to her in advance due to the use of the word “strew”. Overall, Paris’ love for Juliet was unrequited and transitory.

In conclusion, Romeo and Juliet portrays different aspects and types of love in many ways. Shakespeare’s idea of the concept of love is definitely very intricate and multifaceted. Through the many different characters and relationships in the play, he depicts some of the various types of love and the different ways it can proclaim. These relationships can be romantic, platonic, familial, shallow, trivial or fate.

Romeo and Juliet are partially responsible for their demise essay

William Shakespeare’s tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, is a play that reveals Romeo and Juliet are partially responsible for their own demise. The tragic death of Romeo and Juliet ultimately leads to the reconciliation of their feuding families. The responsibility is displayed by many themes and characters throughout the play. Set in the sixteenth century Verona, Italy, this allows the playwright to indirectly critique the Elizabethan society. This relates to the Elizabethan era, when many people met their demise by their emotions and other people; this reflects how characters were killed during the play. Shakespeare displays his critiques in many ways, such as the feuding families, which is explored throughout the play. Other than emotions, the playwright reveals that other characters, such as Friar Lawrence, can be the cause of another’s death. Through the characterisation of Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare argues that their own emotions are to blame for their demise. Shakespeare prompts his Elizabethan audience to consider that Romeo and Juliet are partially responsible for their own demise.

The feuding families are partially responsible for the eponymous characters’ deaths. This is because the feud prevents Romeo and Juliet from loving each other in public. It is through the phrase, “from forth the fatal loins of these two foes”, that Shakespeare presents this view. The alliteration of ‘f’ emphasises the diction of “fatal”. This allows the playwright to prompt the Elizabethan audience to feel sad that Romeo and Juliet’s deaths were partially due to the feuding families because they couldn’t love each other publicly. Shakespeare works through an effort to show that because of the feuding families, Tybalt and Mercutio were killed; this Results in Romeo getting banished. This is made clear when Tybalt proclaims, “this shall bit excuse the injuries that thou hast done me; therefore, turn and draw.” It is in the diction “injuries” that implies how the feuding families caused these metaphorical injuries. Shakespeare tries to reveal how when people are too careless, they often realize their mistakes too late and pay dearly. This is made clear when Capulet agrees that he is guilty, “Poor sacrifices of our enmity!” it is in the diction “enmity” that indicates how careless he was too feud against the Montagues for so long, and not realize what was happening to people around him. Overall, the feuding families is an important reason why Romeo and Juliet fell to their demise.

Friar Lawrence is a character that is partially responsible for Romeo and Juliet’s Demise, there are many reasons for this, for instance, it is though the phrase, “For this alliance may so happy prove, to turn your households’ rancour to pure love.” That Shakespeare presents the Friars motive to actually marry Romeo and Juliet. The syntax “to turn your households’ rancor to pure love” allows the playwright to prompt the Elizabethan audience to feel that the reason that the Friar is agreeing to marry them is because it may stop the feuding families; however he is rushing things and is not acting “wisely and slow; they stumble that run fast”. Shakespeare works through an effort to explain that because the friar is being too careless, he is not thinking everything through and is not even going to confirm the plan with Romeo. This is made clear when the friar states: “In the meantime, against thou shalt awake, Shall Romeo by my letters know our drift, and hither shall he come.” It is in the syntax “Shall Romeo by my letters know our drift” allows Shakespeare to reveal that the friar is being extremely careless and is not using his head. Shakespeare reveals that when people are selfish, they can often cause trouble and it’s a bad human quality,

William Shakespeare’s tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, is a play that reveals Romeo and Juliet are partially responsible for their own demise. The responsibility of who was responsible were important to the Elizabethan audience as many people blamed others for their own responsibilities. It is through the feuding families, the characterization of Friar Lawrence and Romeo and Juliet’s bad decisions and emotions that the playwright’ is able to present the responsibilities of Romeo and Juliet’s demise. The responsibility is articulated from the plays exposition to its denouement. A quote that explains the responsibility is when Prince Escalus states: “Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things; some shall be pardoned, and some shall be punished. For never was a story of more woe than this if Juliet and her Romeo.” Due to this, the Elizabethan audience is aware of how the responsibility of Romeo and Juliet deaths are not just their own fault and others have a role to play as well. Overall, William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy which uncovers Romeo and Juliet’s partial responsibility for their own demise.

Character traits Romeo and Juliet Essay

Love, fate, loyalty and conflict. These words represent key ’s play Romeo and Juliet and are closely associated with its most interesting character, Romeo Montague.

Shakespeare’s memorable characters are created with the purpose of providing a breadth of knowledge into the key and complex concepts in life. Romeo is of this purposeful characterisation. And although he begins as an impulsive and immature man, he instantly becomes the most interesting character with the beginning of his startling transformation after he discovers true love. Another reason is because of his contribution to the intensity of the play through his extreme but passionate actions built on his true love for Juliet.

The beginning of this play presents Romeo as an obstinate and audacious teenager, experiencing unrequited love with Rosaline. This all changes though when he talks with Juliet for the first time in Act 1 Scene 5 through a significant shared-sonnet, causing Romeo’s dramatic transformation in character. In this part of the scene, Romeo has just narrowly escaped the wrath of Tybalt after he finds out Romeo gate-crashed the party. Then, Romeo speaks with Juliet for the first time and a passionate love sprouts between Romeo and Juliet which transforms Romeo. We see this illustrated in when Romeo says “Two blushing pilgrims, ready…To smooth that rough touch with a tender kiss”. It then continues with Juliet responding with “Good pilgrim you wrong your hand too much” before Romeo says “O, then, dear saint, let lips do what hands do”. These quotes clearly show the use of religious metaphors by Romeo. This shows his profound change to a more elaborate style of language.

Another technique by Shakespeare is through how he structures this conversation as a sonnet, showcasing how their immediate love connects them and is unique and true in its form (unlike the infatuation with Rosaline). The sonnet is also used as a textual echo to connect it with the prologue which is also told in sonnet form. This additional technique brings in foreshadowing in how the prologue is strongly associated with fate especially through the words “death-marked love”. This foreshadows how their love will lead to their failed fight against fate.

Baz Luhrmann’s reinterpretation of this scene shows the setting transferred into a grand, American mansion, though Romeo and Juliet first see each other through a fish tank before entering the mansion’s great hall. The fishtank holds the motif of water, which is used to symbolise the purity of their love. More symbolism is intertwined with the reference to Romeo’s knight armour, demonstrating how Romeo is saving Juliet from a loveless life and loveless marriage with Paris. Comparing this to Juliet’s angel costume is also important in how it conveys the theme of fate through how Juliet is high in the heavens and out of his reach. Another technique is specific camera shots. This is shown in his slow cuts and close-ups while they lock-eyes with each other through the fish tank which conveys a romantic and.

Friar Laurence comes up with a plan so Juliet can be reunited with Romeo in Mantua. The night before the wedding, Juliet must drink a potion to make her appear to be dead. Once she has been left in the family’s crypt, Romeo and Friar Laurence will take her to live in Mantua, so the couple is away from the families feuding.

Juliet Capulet

Once Juliet has arrived home, she finds out that the wedding has been moved forward to the next day. That night just before she goes to sleep, Juliet drinks the potion. Juliet’s nurse discovers her dead body in the morning. The family mourn the death of Juliet and her body is left in the crypt as according to plan. The plan never makes it to Romeo in Mantua and he only hears that Juliet is dead.
Due to being so heartbroken, Romeo decides to kill himself rather than live without Juliet. Romeo buys a bottle of poison and rushes back to Verona to die by Juliet’s body. Outside her tomb, Romeo comes across Paris and they fight. Romeo kills Paris and rushes inside the tomb to be with Juliet, he drinks the poison and dies beside her. Moments later, Friar Laurence enters and finds that Paris has been murdered and Romeo has killed himself, Juliet awakens and Friar Laurence tries to take her with him. When Juliet refuses to leave, Friar Laurence leaves her alone with Romeo’s body. Juliet kisses Romeo’s lips in the hope the poison will kill her when it does not work, she digs a dagger into her chest and dies on top of Romeo’s body.

Soon after, the watch arrives, followed by the Prince, the Capulets and the Montagues. The families discover their children’s bodies and decide to end their feud and place gold statues of the young lover’s side by side in a now peaceful Verona.

Romeo Montague

Romeo Montague is the only son of the Montague family and next in line for the Montague residence. Romeo and his family, The Montague’s live in Verona, Italy. Romeo is only sixteen and is looking to find a wife.

Throughout the play he takes very little part in the feud between the Montague and Capulet families as he has been too distracted by his love for Rosaline to take part in any battles.

Romeo is left heartbroken by Rosaline at the beginning of the play as she does not want to commit herself to someone for life. His heartbreak is almost instantly mended when he meets Juliet Capulet at the Capulet masquerade party and falls in love with her.
Romeo is seen to be a very passionate person and always focuses on a single emotion, usually the emotion is love. His passion for love is so strong that he decides to drink poison as he does not believe that he can live without his love, Juliet.

Romeo is very poetic and likes to use his ability to speak well to win over a woman. This is displayed in Act 1 Scene 5, when Romeo makes Juliet turn red by saying “…my lips, two blushing pilgrims, ready stand/To smooth that rough touch with a tender kiss.”
Romeo can be viewed as witty and sensible as he tends to stay out of trouble aside from when he kills Tybalt as revenge for the murder of his best friend Mercutio.

Romeo dies at the end of the play next to Juliet as he commits suicide.
Juliet Capulet is the daughter of the Lord Capulet and Lady Capulet. Juliet also has a very close relationship with her nurse who takes on a mothering role to young Juliet. Juliet and the Capulet family live in Verona, Italy.
Juliet is only thirteen and is being pushed to marry Paris, the kinsman to Prince Escalus. She is very unsure whether she could even fall in love with him.

When we first meet Juliet, she is very reliant on her nurse and parents, but in just five days, with the assistance of Friar Laurence, has planned her own fake death so she can be reunited with her love, Romeo Montague.
Juliet is very loyal to her family but decides to branch off and marry Romeo after knowing each other for one day. Hours after her secret wedding, Juliet finds out Romeo has killed her cousin and family’s kinsman Tybalt. She is very distressed about the situation but decides to forget about Tybalt to focus on her relationship with Romeo.

Due to the family’s heartbreak of the death of Tybalt, Juliet is forced to marry Paris the next day. Juliet turns to her nurse for help but is betrayed and their relationship is lost. She does not want to marry Paris and just wants to be with Romeo.
Juliet dies at the end of the play next to her husband Romeo, after she has found his dead body next to her. Her death is a suicide by stabbing herself with Romeo’s dagger.

Tybalt Capulet

Tybalt Capulet is the cousin of Juliet Capulet and kinsman of the Capulet family. Tybalt is very aggressive throughout the play, he is always looking for a fight with a member of the Montague family. Tybalt wants to keep the feud between the families that has been happening through many generations to continue and will kill any member of the Montague family whenever the chance arises. He also despises anyone who even discusses keeping the peace between the two families.

At the masquerade party at the beginning of the play, Tybalt has to be held back from killing Romeo Montague by Lord Capulet due to the known consequences.

Tybalt is always looking out for his family and has always stood by their beliefs. He will also go to the extremes to protect and satisfy the Capulet family. Romeo and Juliet true love essay

A moment in the play when something important is revealed to you about the relationship between Romeo and Juliet is Act 2 Scene 2. In this scene Romeo stands in the shadows beneath Juliets’s bedroom window. Juliet appears on the balcony and thinking she’s alone, reveals in a soliloquy her love for Romeo. She speaks about her hatred for the family feud. Romeo listens in the shadows until Juliet calls on him to “doff” his name, he steps from the darkness saying, “call me but love.”. After the two express their love for one another, Juliet is called by the Nurse and leaves, however she comes back momentarily and the two promise to marry. Juliet promises to send a messenger to arrange the wedding.

This scene is important as Romeo and Juliet confess their love for one another and reveal to us as an audience that the two are in love. True love is described as unconditional. However Romeo and Juliet’s love is forbidden as their families, the Montagues and Capulets, are sworn enemies . This tells us that Romeo and Juliet are truly in love, as when Romeo and Juliet fall in love they are aware of the risks they are taking but their love is powerful and they love one another unconditionally. Therefore it is revealed to us in this scene that they are truly in love.

Juliet confesses her love for Romeo in her soliloquy. She says how her love resembles the sea when she says “My bounty is as boundless as the sea, my love as deep, the more I give to thee, the more I have, for both are infinite”. This statement refers to her infinite love for Romeo. This is a bold statement to make after only knowing Romeo for one night, and so, we as an audience must believe that she truly loves Romeo.

Romeo describes Juliet as a light in darkness. He does this to express how he feels Juliet is different from all the other women in Verona and to display Juliet’s beauty. We can see this when he says ‘But soft, what light through the yonder window breaks? It is the east , and Juliet is the sun’. Romeo sees Juliet as his source of light. This tells us that he is truly in love as he refers to their love as radiant and life giving like the sun.

Shakespeare uses religious language and metaphors to describe the love between Romeo and Juliet in this scene. Romeo calls Juliet a ’saint’ and a ’bright angel’. Shakespeare uses these images to show us that Romeo does not just love Juliet, he worships her. Romeo also uses phrases like eyes of heaven when describing Juliet to display her beauty. He also uses the description of Juliet as a messenger of heaven making this once again shows how special and sacred she is to Romeo. Romeo uses all these pure and religious metaphors to express that his love for Juliet is like no other and by doing this he makes the pair seem sacred, pure and holy, almost as if they are not human.

In conclusion, this scene shows us the start of a new chapter in Romeo and Juliets relationship. It shows us their attraction to each other and their desire to never be parted. We learn this through their confessions of love for one another, Romeo’s use of metaphors and Juliet’s soliloquy. I personally find this moment between Romeo and Juliet quite moving as their love seems to be quite solid, raw and true. It is quite admirable for a couple to establish such deep connection particularly when they face such a divide between their families.

Introduction to the Novel “Romeo and Juliet”

Romeo you can only make fun of love if you’ve never been heartbroken. Juliet enters on the balcony. Hold up, who’s that hottie over there? Is that a triangle i see because juliet is definitely a right one. Showing off from all the angles, gosh she knows how to make someone jealous. The stars with they could be her to make people smile out of beauty instead of a ball of gas. Those clothes make her look ugly, only nerds wear suspenders. Get a gucci belt. Oh, there goes my baby! Oh, if only she knew how much i’m into her. Her hands are saying the’re cold, wish i could warm them, but i’m kinda cold too. She’s ignoring me, even though she doesn’t know i’m here. If her hair was a crown it would be from antarctica because it’d be full of ice. I wish i were a priest, because i’d love to marry her. (winks at camera) juliet my gosh romeo (to himself) her voice is so sweet that apples are quaking. Keep talking.. Wow i don’t say that often. Juliet (not knowing romeo hears her) romeo, for what reason do you have to be yourself? Discount about your guardian and change your name to something more compatible. If not, explicitly confess your emotions for me. Romeo (to himself) should i tell her? Juliet (still not knowing romeo hears her) i only have such gravity for your name. Even if you elude your name montague, you wouldn’t discredit who you are.

In what world is montague? Montague isn’t a book, ruler, or pencil, so what precisely is it? A name has no definitive meaning. If we called a textbook something else, it wouldn’t efface its meaning. Your name doesn’t define the capacity of who you are. Please forgot your name, it constrains you. Acquiesce and take me as a reward. Romeo (to juliet) who is romeo, we don’t have to speak of him if you don’t like. Juliet display yourself. Do not hide in a void too dark for my eyes to comprehend. Romeo i don’t know what to say, you don’t like my name then i don’t either so, if you can’t think of anything you can always call me yours. Juliet you haven’t even said a plethora of words, yet i am aware of who you are romeo. And tell me are you not a montague? Romeo didn’t i just explain that whole thing to you. Juliet inform me, how the hexahedron did you climb my walls. They are steep and slippery if you were to fall you could easily meet death. Also, are you aware of the danger you are in? Romeo i took a plane right over called “flip and roll”, then i snuck in your house with a little thing called finesse. Juliet they will annihilate you. Romeo come at me, all your fists couldn’t keep me away from you, and i’d love to see them try to tackle the starting varsity running back. (flexes to juliet) juliet i would do anything to help you, even give you an answer key! Romeo the night will hide me, and if you don’t like me i’ll leave, it’s really not that serious just say go and i’ll walk out. Juliet where are you locating information on where my bedroom is? Romeo this special something called, eyes. Juliet obviously you can’t see in a dark void. But if you could, you would see my cheeks glowing. I’d stay content if we complied with rule. But omit the rules. Do you have the same love for me as do i? Just utter the words i want to hear. I can’t be too guileless, you could be untruthful.

Romeo, if you really love me,then state it. Or i’ll play hard to get, just like you do to the other girls. Honestly, romeo i love you too much and i’ll show you how faithful i am. I. So please pardon me , and don’t conclude that my love isn’t existent. Romeo actually i can’t see in the light either i’m pretty blind but besides the point. Juliet i promise by my geometry grade, the very grade the shapes my gpa. Juliet don’t promise me with your geometry grade. Your grades are always fluctuating, remember that time when your average dropped twenty points! Nice try, but i wouldn’t want to be promised to something so arbitrary. Romeo don’t act like yours is all that either at least mine is higher than yours, what would you prefer my princess? Juliet don’t promise me anything at all. But promise me you, who i watch every day like bill nye, i will consider you truthful. Romeo ok, well your being difficult and i’m really not in the mood to play hard to get— juliet just don’t. Even though you usher glee, i won’t trade-off for the glee you give. It’s just not logical. We haven’t contemplated enough. Similar to taking a test, you can take it, but you aren’t sure if you got a good grade until you see it. Good night. Graduley, our love is multiplying like when bacteria eats agar. I long to see you even though you are right in front of me. Romeo oh, so that it. Just good night? Juliet content? From where or what could make you so happy. Romeo how about an honest, mutual i love you? Juliet i committed my deep affection for you. Only so i can repeat. Romeo what? Are you being petty or what cause i’m confused. Juliet yes, so that i could do it again. But there is no need to desire something i already have. My benevolence to you is as boundless as the school hours and deeper than the depression my grades cause. Juliet exits. Romeo this is too good to be true, somebody come pinch me to make sure i’m awake- i am just joking pinch me if you want to! Juliet enters on her balcony. Juliet i have three words for you romeo, and then you can truly leave. If your aim as my lover are ethical and you want to forever be mine, email me.

I’ll email you tomorrow , and you can email me back to state where and when you want to be married!. I’ll give everything i own, even my t-calculator, to be with you. Juliet (to the nurse) one minute(to romeo) but if you don’t have ethical reasons then— juliet okay! Give me some time— please i need to go. I’ll see you tomorrow romeo my ego depends on it— juliet good night don’t let the bedbugs bite. Juliet exit romeo leaving you is a thousand times worse than being near you. A lover goes toward his beloved as enthusiastically as a schoolboy leaving his books, but when he leaves his girlfriend, he feels as miserable as the schoolboy on his way to school. Romeo starts to leave. Juliet returns, on her balcony. Juliet romeo, above! I wish i got that new phone, so that it wouldn’t take as long to message you. Also i have to be quiet as a lion, because my guardians are sleeping. Or else i would roar until the unknown in space could hear me. I’d only say one word, “romeo.” romeo my soul calls for me. The sound of lovers calling each others names through the night is silver-sweet. It’s the sweetest sound a lover ever hears. Juliet romeo! Romeo what do you want? Juliet when should i email you, just making sure! Romeo like nine or something. Juliet place all of your trust in me. It already feels like it’s been centuries and i can’t recall why i called you over here in the first place. Romeo i’ll be right here waiting until you find what you’re looking for. Juliet it’s okay, you’d be standing here all night. Romeo i’ll stay here forever. I’ll forget that it’s a school night, which isn’t changing any of my plans.. Juliet the sun is starting to rise. I fancy to let you rome my romeo, but i wouldn’t let you go far. Only as far as my thoughts, but i would soon catch focus pulling you back.
