Unfortunate Shooting Event In The High School That Placed In Parkland, Florida

On the day of February 14, 2018 there was a shooting in Marjory Stoneman Douglas High school. The high school is in Parkland, Florida. This moment left many families traumatized as they mourn for their lost loved ones; also, students and teachers as they are in fear for their lives. This paper will discuss the (1). who, (2). what, (3). where, (4). when, (5). And the why of this unfortunate shooting event.

Firstly, the name of the shooter who caused the incident is Nikolas Cruz, which is an ex-student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High. This incident involved many civilians and officers. Although, there is information also said that the teachers were the heroes in this situation. There were many factors that took place in the event. Teachers such as: Scott Beigel, who opened the door for the students as he heard gunshots and Melissa Falkowski, who also took in students and hid them in the closet. Officers such as: Michael Leonard, who caught the individual, and Scot Peterson, who was the police officer who was on duty, but did not intervene.

To add, this incident involved many civilians, leaving a total of 17 dead. During the shootings, gunman Nikolas Cruz reloaded a total of five times. This is more than enough time for officers to apprehend this criminal. However, the criminal Nikolas Cruz was still on the move. If Peterson had gone in and apprehended the criminal when he was reloading, then he would have possibly saved many lives and fulfil his duty as a police officer, to keep the citizens safe from harm way.

Ultimately, where this situation took place was as said earlier in Parkland, Florida. Parkland is said to be one of the nicest neighborhoods in Broward. With a population of about 32,000 people. Also with Stoneman Douglas High being a great school having an enrollment of about 3,200 students. However, one day this nice neighborhood and school took a turn for the worse by criminal Nikolas Cruz. According to CNN, this is how the criminal acted,

“the shooter entered the building from the east stairwell and fired into four classrooms. Shooter continues down hall and up the west stairwell to the second floor. Shooter walks down the hall and shoots one victim in room 1234. Shooter continues up the east stairwell to the third floor, drops his backpack and rifle, and runs back down the stairs to exit the building.”

To add, this all happened on February 14, 2018. Valentine’s day of 2018. A day to be remembered. Nikolas was said to be abused and has been known for flashing weapons on social medias. He was always known as the bad egg. “Agustin Felman, a Stoneman Douglas student, told police Cruz once said he “wanted to shoot black people.” Kevin Fanti, a gun store employee who sold Cruz an AK-47, said he later saw Cruz with a swastika drawn in Sharpie on his wrist. Another student, Michael Garvey, said Cruz showed him a “lunch box full of bullets.” “Cruz had been expelled for unspecified disciplinary reasons. Now he was back, with a .223-caliber AR-15 rifle concealed in a soft black case.” (CNN P.1).

“Although sheriff’s deputies, school officials and even the FBI were aware of Cruz’s troubling behavior, authorities were unable to prevent the deadly attack.” Said Miami Herald. Meaning on this day of Valentines would have never happened if deputies, officials, or even FBI took the responsibility of taking action.

There were many ways to have avoided this situation. Peterson could have gone in and done his job correctly. An active shooter should not be able to roam the hallways or even get into the school without confrontation. This was due to the lack of law enforcement and the negligence of Scot Paterson for not going in when he was very much needed to. Recently, now in January of this new year 2019, suspended embattled Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel, whose department has been criticized for its response to last year’s massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland. DeSantis, who just took office after winning election in November, appointed former Coral Springs police Sgt. Gregory Tony, now president of an active-shooter response training company, as the new sheriff, saying that Israel had displayed ‘incompetence and neglect of duty.’

Education Essays – Distance Learning Classroom

The beauty of learning is no one can take it away from a person. Whether in the classroom or through the computer, learning provides knowledge, and knowledge is power. Face- to-face education in a classroom setting is a normality for most people in the world today. Although there are many positive aspects of face-to-face learning, the benefits of online learning certainly hold a stronger weight. “A commonly accepted definition of distance learning is any formal educational process that occurs with the teacher and the student separated by either time or distance,” (Phi Kappa Phi Journal, 2006, pp. 44-46). Distance learning is becoming a new and more desirable form of education. The leaming courses involved in distance learning are more effective than face-to-face learning because they are more flexible, comfortable, and affordable.

A flexible schedule is non-existent when it comes to face-to-face learning. Classroom learning settings provide a predetermined class schedule for the student. It is almost forced upon the student to give his or her attention to learning for seven to eight hours a day every Monday through Friday. Online education allows an individual to allot his or her own set hours for education. For many, this would be extremely beneficial. Depending on the student, some work more productively and learn more effectively during different times of the day. With the help of distance learning, instead of a mandatory class at eight o’clock in the morning, a student could take a course at a more advantageous time for him or her. In addition, students learn at different paces; consequently, face-to-face learning may hold back or rush students depending on their learning capabilities.

In the world of education, people often claim that no child should be left behind. Because course study would be self-paced, distance learning would not proceed too fast or too slow through a subject. Furthermore, distance learning allows students to manipulate their own daily lives. Students are often mandated to prioritize education over a paycheck (Hendricks, 2019). Part-time jobs are important for some students to obtain for both monetary and experience reasons. By being able to fluctuate a work and school schedule, life is so much more enjoyable, unique, and productive. Spencer Hendricks wrote, “Students must shape their personal schedules around school instead of the other way around,” (2019), and that is a lifestyle that students in today’s society should not be living.

In the world, most people see comfort as a priority. Learning should be an activity that is desirable. If education is held in an uncomfortable setting for a student, he or she may lose the desire or even the capability to learn. In a traditional classroom setting, most schools monotonously file students into rows of small and uncomfortable desks. Not only are the desks hard to sit in for ninety minutes of a lecture or class, they often invade personal space because they are extremely close to one another.

Distance learning allows an individual to find his or her own comfort while learning, overall making education a better experience. Whether “… at the kitchen table or even curled up on the couch,” (Cooper, 2018) students are able to make their own decisions and find a comfortable setting to learn. The classroom setting also exposes kids to other students. While social situations are beneficial, negative ones are extremely consequential. For example, students can be victims of bullying in schools. This negative behavior disrupts learning potential for students. Distance learning provides the best learning environment for students because comfort is not questioned and negative social interactions are taken out of the picture.

Money is woven into nearly every aspect of humanity. Even schooling, especially face- to-face learning, has monetary requirements. Schools are normally required to provide bus services for children to be transported to and from school. The busing service adds up financially. Distance learning is based out of a student home; therefore, no transportation is needed and money would not be spent. In addition, schools often spend money on materialistic necessities.

The booming technological era has catalyzed a movement towards distance learning. Textbooks, papers, and other classroom materials could be replaced with the help of technology. Distance learning courses are designed to imitate classroom learning and instruction (Phi Kappa Phi Journal, 1999, pp. 44-46). Classroom learning material, instruction, assignments, and resources can be accessed with one simple computer. The world is growing technologically, and most instructional objectives can be accomplished without the use of money or tangible items.

Nearly everyone can agree that education is important. The only struggle is agreeing what mode of education is most effective. Although it is preference, distance learning offers a plethora of benefits for students in areas of flexibility, comfortability, and affordability. Face-to-face learning standardizes times for students, sets societal norms, and wastes money. Online learning is a well-known style of education that is preferred by many. It is becoming a desirable phenomenon that has a strong potential to grow and blossom students’ tree of knowledge in a more effective way than face-to-face learning.

Our Education System

Education is often a crucial issue in any society. Without education, no one becomes informed, and when no one is informed, often one will rise above the rest, leading to a monarchy/dictatorship. Obviously, dictatorships do not result in a happy world, or a peaceful one for that matter. In order to keep this from happening, we keep our generations educated. But who is to say that this current method of education is efficient? One of the major issues with education is that there are not always quality teachers. Some teachers do not teach anything. and let their students do what they wish or struggle to learn, and then there are those that teach it, but do not make sure that the students learn it. I think that this issue should be corrected in a big way. Without a correction, education will continue to repel students and the intelligence level of this country will continue to degrade.

The reason that this issue is so important to me is that I have had quite a few “teachers” that don’t actually live up to my expectations of a teacher. For me, I was always bad at math, and I would often stay after and still not get it. However in my freshmen year, I had a teacher who decided that he was going to make us his experimental class, and try various things out on us. As a result, my grade suffered, and I had no idea what was going on in the classroom. Because there were no regulations placed on the required material and a general policy on how we learned it, our classes grades fluctuated a lot, and we didn’t walk away with knowledge in hand, but the satisfaction of knowing that we barely passed. In turn, the students eventually grow up to be teachers, and repeat the same thing that their teachers did, creating an issue for the education system, and the installation of knowledge in students.

One way that we could go about correcting this issue is to enact a program that would monitor average test scores in various classes/schools, and compare them to the individual classes grades on tests. By comparing averages, you could find out who is doing their job or not. This would weed out some of the teachers that do not make sure the students learn it. Part two of this program would also be having teachers prove that they are following the required course material for their class. This would make it so the teachers have to follow a curriculum. A third part would be to allow teachers to go off into extra material (more interesting or fun topics) after the required curriculum is completed. This would serve as a reward, and allow for the students to learn better, because it is something that is interesting.

In closing, education needs a bit of a reform, in my opinion, however not a critical one. If we took our time and gathered ideas from both students, faculty, and administration, we would find a better method for education. Also, by placing regulations on the schools, yet allowing for the completion of regulations to result in flexibility, we would achieve better test scores, and result in more students walking away with knowledge that they will actually remember. The countless generations before us have set the bar high, but we are in a technological age where we can learn even more than before. We should take advantage of this, and develop our intelligence to the fullest, and take our education a little bit at a time.

Online Based Class vs Campus Based Class

Some adults that enroll to college already have a family, or they may have a job. With such a busy schedule they might find it easier to enroll to an online class rather than attending traditional classes at a school campus. Both classes make every effort to help students obtain a college degree, but differ in some manner. Online classes and traditional classes can differ from flexibility, difficulty, and success rate.

Online classes are more flexible comparing to traditional classes. With online classes it is a personal decision to watch a lecture any time appropriate for an individual as long as it is before an exam. Meaning that if a student wants to go to class at midnight they can, sounds fun can be risky. Better for those that may have a family of their own already will find more comfort in taking online classes. “As an online student, I was able to work full-time and carry a full-time course load without any issues” (Reynolds).

Although online classes can be very flexible with time, the difficulty of an online class can be very laborious. “There seems to be a myth among at least some students that online classes are easier than campus classes.” (Hartwell). Online classes take a lot of self-motivation cause there will be no administrator looking over the student, especially for the students that struggle with their academics. Most teachers can see when a student is sitting in their class and is struggling, without a teacher physically in the same room it may be harder.

“Without face-to-face contact, faculties are not able to pick up nonverbal cues from students that can indicate they are disengaged” (Cull). Not having a teacher to look over a student that has no self-motivation can lead to a student to withdrawal or just fail a class. “… online course success rates that were 12 percentage points lower than completion rates for the face-to-face equivalents” (Perez). Having more flexibility and freedom can make a student feel like they have enough time to get their work done which can cause them into failing and withdrawing compared to students that are in traditional classes.

In traditional campus classes there is some flexibility, but not as much as the online classes. College campuses have night classes, but are only open until a certain time. Having to make a schedule that fits with the professor’s schedule will take lots of time management, “. managing your time is sure to be more complex because your classes will meet on various days and times…” (Gardner & Jewler 11). Although traditional campuses are less flexible than online classes it is said to be easier in traditional classes.

“Students appreciated the convenience of online lectures but preferred in class lectures because of the increased ease of maintaining attention in the more structured environment” (Jensen). People that get distracted easily should be in a traditional in campus class. However, being in traditional classes compared to online classes show a higher percentage in success rate. “Jenkins noted that student success rates in traditional classes [are] 70 to 75 percent, significantly higher than the online course rate”” (Kokemuller). With such a higher success rate in traditional classes, majority of students should not lean towards online classes, unless they can find the motivation and are not struggling academically.

Having a family or working a part time job should not make a student want to take online classes. Some students prefer online classes because they either think it will be easier or simply because they have such a busy life, they feel they will have more time for a flexible schedule. Traditional campus classes can still have some flexible hours as online classes. However, taking online classes will give a student less difficulty with passing their class, because there will be student face-to-face interaction with their professor. As traditional classes statistics show a higher success rate than online classes, more students will be better off with sticking to traditional classes.

First Day of School

First day of school and first period gives us an essay.

“Now, where is room 4C,” I mutter.

On my way to my English, I finally notice the eerie atmosphere of the school.

“Hello, anyone here?” I say with my outdoor voice.

The halls and lunch areas are completely empty and the ceiling lights are flickering. I slowly start to regret walking to school. I begin to feel an eerie presence stalking me and I trail my hands to my hidden shoulder holster and grip my handgun. I enter a hall and take a glance behind me before closing the door. The hall has a few dim lights and there is trash all over the floor, definition of filthy. I walk over to class, still having my hand gripped to the loaded pistol. The door is badly scratched and is almost coming off the hinge, very suspicious.

“I’ve got a really bad feeling about this,” I whisper to myself to make sure my ears are still working.

I slowly open the door and look inside. The stench of blood and drugs fill the room. Desks were out of order and flipped over; the whiteboard is dusty and scratched. I notice writing in blood on the wall that says, “Fiji Freshman, we’re coming for you.” I hear the clashing of chairs down the hallway and immediately detach my backpack and arm my pistol. I cautiously walk out the class and see a figure walking towards me.

“Stop where you’re at! I’ll shoot!” I yell out in an aggressive fashion.

“Garr…,” it mumbles as it slowly limps its way to me.

After a few moments, I notice something strange. This is no ordinary figure; it had no eyes and a stitched mouth. Blood is dripping from every part of its body and its skin is pale as a ghost.

“Arrrgghhh!” the creature grunts as sprints towards me.

Out of a split second decision, I start running down the hall for my life.

I reach a comer and quickly slid under a pile of debris. I dust off my clothes and take out my phone. No signal. And just when I thought I lost the figure, it starts sprinting right in front of me, out of nowhere. Before I could react, it slapped me across the face with its damp fingerless hands twice, and after the third slap, I passed out.

My eyes slowly opened and just as I regain consciousness to my muscles, I realize that

I’m in a small, dark room,

“Where am I?” I think to myself as I rub my head.

All of my equipment has been stripped from me and I could barely see anything. It is like being locked inside a chest, and you don’t know what’s in with you. I feel my way along the rooms and find a light switch and flip it on. I spot the door, but it was locked. I kicked it open and noticed my bag and equipment sitting right in front of me. I felt a punch to the right of my side and automatically responded with a punch, the figure was stunned for long enough for me to grab my gun. I pointed it straight at the face and fired at point blank.

Suddenly, I heard rumbling and the ceiling started falling apart. From the left, I heard an extremely distant growl. Sounded almost like a stampede. I focused as hard as I could to the left and saw that it was a giant worm crawling straight at me. I quickly picked up my bags and made a run for it.

As I am on the second floor of the school, I quickly glance at the upcoming classrooms; chemistry’s room is coming up. I head straight into the classroom. I take out my phone to use as a flashlight and begin looking for materials to neutralize whatever is following me. I figure I have a good minute or maybe two if I’m lucky.

“Ok, I need acetone, hydrogen peroxide, and muriatic acid,” I say to myself aloud. The room was destroyed and unorganized, the stench of death linger around making it a more difficult task for me. I knock over shelves and open cabinets looking for the required chemicals. I finally find the drawer that has everything I need: acetone, hydrogen peroxide, and muriatic acid. I quickly grab an empty jar and ran out of the room whilst mixing the ingredients together. Perfect timing, the worm is right behind me with his mouth wide open. I jump down the set of stairs and twist my torso to throw the jar straight into its mouth.

“Ha, take that you little worm,” I say.

In a few moments, the worm is in pieces. Blood and green guts splatter over walls and the building begins to fall apart. I jump over tables and debris and finally see the entrance of the school. My legs are starting to give away as I go through my second wind to rush to the door and dive roll out. The air is filthy and had a putrid acidic atmosphere, not good. I continue running to make sure that I wouldn’t inhale any bad gases.

After running a good 200 feet away, I look back. The school is in ruins.

“Not as bad as last time though, when it was aliens attacking,” I say while pulling up my pants.

The Symptoms of Long Term Effect of Stress and the Effect of Job Loss on Mental Health

Stress is the “wear and tear our bodies experience as we adjust to our continual changing environment; it has physical and emotional effects on us and can create negative feelings. As a positive influence, stress can help compel us to action; result in a new awareness and an exciting new perspective. As a negative influence stress can result in feelings of distrust, rejection anger, and depression, which in turn can cause health problems such as headaches, upset stomach, rashes, insomnia, ulcers, high pressure, heart disease, and stroke. (Koop,1998). The long term effects of stress on one’s health are quite significant.

The American Academy of Family Physicians has said that two thirds of office visits to family doctors are prompted by stress-related symptoms. Stress is more than just a nuisance or something that occasionally makes people feel nervous or anxious. Very stressful events have been associated with a dramatically increased risk of heart attack. Chronic, ongoing stress, even when it is not so dramatic, can affect one’s health in very significant ways. One common example of this is the effect of a very stressful job. Stress, however, is not always bad. Some stress is inevitable and actually beneficial.

Stress helps people when they need to grow, attain difficult goals and perform their best. Some degree of stress enhances performance even when individuals are not in immediate danger. An athlete in a race may perform better because of the stress of the big event. A wedding can be both very stressful and very happy at the same time. It would not be desirable to eliminate all stress from everyone’s life. The total absence of stress would leave people sluggish and bored. Stress can increase performance, but only to a point. When one’s stress exceeds a certain limit, additional stress will detract from performance. Stress or nervousness before a big presentation sometimes helps one to perform better and/or think with more clarity and precision,. However, if that person becomes excessively stressed and anxious, he or she will have difficulty remembering what to say.

The physical stress of swimming in very cold water helps individuals to swim harder, but only for a short time. The colder the water and harder that one swims, the more quickly he or she becomes exhausted. Everyone’s tolerance for stress is different, and individuals handle various types of stress differently. It is important to recognize and respect one’s limits. People do not learn to handle stress by letting it overwhelm them and rob them of their strength.

Ideally, people would be able to adjust to the amount of stress that they face so that they receive neither too much nor too little. This, of course, is not always possible. When one cannot eliminate excessive stress, the best way to manage it is to learn to maintain a balance even during a stressful event. If people learn to recognize the warning signs of increasing stress before they reach their limit, they can cope intelligently with their stresses before their resources are all spent. (Sarafino,1999).

A large population of people suffering from high stress is college students. In a study by Whiteman (1998) stress is defined as any situation that evokes negative thoughts and feelings in a person. The same situation is not evocative or stressful for all people, and all people do not experience the same negative thoughts and feelings when stressed. A critical issue concerning stress among students is its effect on learning.

Yerkes-Doson Law postulates that individuals under low and high stress learn to the least and that those under moderate stress learn the most. Field study and laboratory tests support the notion that excessive stress is harmful to students’ performance. Mechanisms that explain why students perform badly under stress include “hypervigilance” (excessive alertness to a stressful situation resulting in panic-for example, overstudying for an exam) and “premature closure” (quickly choosing a solution to end a stressful situation-for example, rushing through an exam). (Falk,1995).

Students react to college in a variety of ways. For some students, college is stressful because it is an abrupt change from high school. For others, separation from home is a source of stress. Although some stress is necessary for personal growth to occur, the amount of stress can overwhelm students and affect the ability to cope.

Since World War II, changes in American higher education includes growth has been a loss of personal attention to students. One measure of excessive stress, or distress, in college students is the use of mental health services. Symptoms commonly report by campus psychiatrists portray a general picture of school related stress, for example, the inability to do school work and the fear of academic failure. One way for teachers to promote more of a healthy learning environment is to reduce stress among students.

Studies of teachings that produces the most learning suggest that “effective” teachers use an analytical and synthetic approach to the subject matter, organize the material well to make it clear, and establish rapport with their students. Most studies identify enthusiasm as important in promoting students’ learning. The key seems to be to make college courses challenging but not threatening. Many stress models emphasize a “mismatch” between the individual and his or her environment. Both too little and too much stress inhibits learning. Stress is difficult to define because individuals react to it very differently, and a situation that is stressful for one person may not be for another. Further, stressed individuals vary widely in the effectiveness of their coping.

Some college students, when stressed by academic demands, use ineffective mechanisms for coping. They may use “defense avoidance”, for example, avoiding studying and putting off writing assignments. Teachers can help such students develop more effective mechanisms for coping through “stress inoculation”-managing their courses so that students have more information about what to expect, giving feedback on their progress, and providing a degree of control over course activities. (Whiteman, 1998). Feedback is information about current performance that can be used to improve future performance.

When given properly, feedback can encourage positive stress that motivates students to action and can discourage the negative stress that inhibits action. Teachers can take specific steps to give effective feedback: (1) helping students know where they stand, (2) setting up ‘learning hoops”, (3) providing written comments on students work, (4) testing often enough, and (5) arranging personal meetings to discuss students’ work. Having a personal sense of control is an important factor in reducing stress. When students do not know what to expect in their courses, they feel out of control.

Teachers can help students have a greater sense of control by using requests rather than commands, giving students choices in course requirements, explaining assignments so students know their purpose, involving students in the design of examinations, and soliciting and using feedback from students to improve courses and teaching.

College teachers who can effectively use feedback and control in their classroom to create a climate ripe for learning. Students are relaxed but motivated to learn when they have an instructor who provides direction and feedback and who is willing to accept it in return. (Gaff, 1998). Studies of college teaching support the view that the frequency and quality of teachers’ contact with students, inside and outside the classroom, affect students involvement in there own learning.
