Television is an audio visual machine which provides entertainment in the form of various programs, transmitted through air, in the form of radio signals, to be received by your Television. Books on the other hand have no electronics involved and have printed pages, to be read by their prospective Reader and are also aimed at conveying some useful information or entertaining him.

Is Television Better Than Books?

Both, books and television are two different modes of information exchange, aimed at providing useful or sometimes bogus information to the user and entertaining him. But the environment in which they are used and the effect that they have on their respective users are totally different. Television in a normal household is generally placed at common place-a place where the family, friends or visiting relatives gather.

People meet in front of Television, to watch their favorite shows, or to just listen lazily to the News. Whatever the reason may be, TV is only a short term entertainment option which does not provide you much useful information except when you are listening to News.

Books unlike Television are to be read in silence , stressing upon every word, every sentence  and letting it slowly seep into your memory through your eyes, while you lie relaxed on your favorite chair or lying down on your bed. Reading Books is like a spiritual exercise, which satisfies your desire to be entertained in a silent but effective way. Watching Television on the other hand, after sometime will leave you stressed, looking for peace and silence. TV slowly drains your inner peace and tranquility, leaving you stressed and flabbergasted. Whatever the TV does to you, Books do just the opposite.

An Analysis of the Benefits of Television Based on The Office, a Popular Television Show

Television shows don’t serve just one purpose. They are not just for our entertainment or to please our visual needs, but they serve as an escape while also acting as the bridge that unites families, Coworkers, friends, foes, and more. A popular television show like The Office, for example has much deeper meaning than a 30-minute comedy NBC airs every week. It’s a television show I grew up with that leaves me feeling happy when I’m sad and is a time in which my family can break away from their busy schedules to sit and be together.

I notice some similarities behind the global popularity of Indian cinema and reasons as to why I watch The Office. One case in particular deals in the former Soviet Union. In Sudha Rajgopalan’s short essay, “Indian Popular Cinema and Soviet Movie Enthusiasts”, he discusses dark times in the former Soviet Union. World War II had come to an end, the environment was in shambles and Stalin had just ended his rule. The Soviet people needed an escape from the real world to a place were they could forget and be in high spirits. Indian films served as that escape. Indian films were filled with bright imagery with cheerful songs and dancing. The Soviet people could loose themselves in Indian cinema and flee their dreadful environment the moment they began to watch these films.

The television series The Office, serves a comparable role for me as Indian Films did to the former Soviet Union. The Office is a comedy about a “group of typical office workers, where the workday consists of ego clashes, inappropriate behavior, and tedium” (IMDb). It includes light and awkward humor in comical and often absurd situations. When I am in a bad mood, have had a rough day, or just want to relax I often turn to The Office. It is my escape from the real world. When I turn on The Office, my stress and anxiety are instantly erased and I am transported into an alternate world. I need The Office to act as a distraction the same way the people of the former Soviet Union needed Indian films to distract them in times of devastation and trouble.

This is not the only parallel I can draw from the points in Rajgopalan’s essay and this television series. The Office puts a spin on a significant commonality for a very a large part of the world’s population, work. In a typical office setting, there is an established hierarchy, people are working with other people whom they had not chosen and situations can often be strange or uncomfortable. The television show The Office, puts a humorous spin on the average workday and allows it’s viewers to come to the realization that having a corky boss or a bizarre coworker really isn’t all that bad. The audience is plucked from their original negative thoughts and opinions regarding how an office is and thrown into new and positive notions of what an office can be.

In an article I read titled “Why People Watch Comedy Movies”, it reports tht one of the main reason people watch comedies is because they want to be informed. Comedies can provide insight to the real world. They can easily educate people and open their eyes in a fun way. I have a specific example, which demonstrates how someone learned from the comedy series The Office.

My sister works at a hotel in New York City called The James. When she first started working there, she felt very uncomfortable, she didn’t like her peers and she thought her boss was dim-witted. She was never placed in a working environment before and didn’t know what to expect. I also had never worked before but I was able to relate to the working environment through The Office. I told her to imagine what it must have been like just starting out at Dundler Mifflin (the company in The Office). Surprisingly, this little piece of advice helped tremendously. She started having a different outlook of her boss and coworkers. She tailored her working environment for her and began to appreciate work. She now has been working at The James for three and a half years and still tells me she thinks about scenes from The Office while working.

I find this example to be very similar to the role Indian films played in the former Soviet Union. Indian cinema pulled Soviets out of their dark and dull times and placed them in an environment with

inspiration, deep, interesting culture, and bright colors. Indian films provided Soviets with goals and dreams. Soviets could take morals and messages from Indian cinema and use them in real life. It is as if the Soviets could look at their current situation of dire times with a different spin; perhaps they began to believe that times could only get better from here on out or that they can have lifestyles similar to ones shown in Indian films.

Along with providing an escape and diminishing unpleasant feelings, The Office is a method of uniting. In such a hectic and busy world we live in these days, it is often easy to forget about spending time with your loved ones. Currently, for instance, I am working, taking an online course, and studying for the GMAT. With so much on my plate, I often go a long time without really engaging or spending any time with my family. The Office is one outlet I can turn to that will always have me sitting with my family at the end of the day.

The Office is really an endearing show that showcases humor people of all ages can relate to, while occasionally displaying love and romance everyone enjoys. Although I want to believe this is the only reason my family sits down to watch it together every week, I secretly know it is not. My parents, I can tell, are not real fans of the show. However, it is an easy and fun way to get the entire family close together and share enjoyment.

This situation ties in directly with a situation described in len Ang’s “Gender and/in Media Consumption.” In this case, a mother sits down to watch sports with her son when she really finds no interest in sports. However, she will still pursue in an attempt at making contact” (Ang).

From readings in week 3, I know there are many characteristics (gender being one) that have extremely significant affects on the way an audience will perceive and respond to media like The Office. However, I don’t know for sure of all the characteristics that affect who views The Office, but I do know the number of viewers can be altered by something as simple as family contact.

Television shows like The Office provide transportation to an alternate world in which the audience can escape and resolve real world problems. They provide serenity while building and preserving a strong bond between people of all kinds and backgrounds.

The Truman Show Essay

The Truman Show Utopia – A perfect world. Truman’s world was an utopia. Everything, including the weather, was controlled in a huge Hollywood dome. Truman grew up having no idea he was being watched every hour of the day, and that every step he took was being viewed by millions all over the globe. As the show progressed, it became clear how much media influenced Truman’s life, and also how Christof played a huge role in Truman’s well-being. First, the influence of media affects our lives in many ways. As The Truman Show ran 24/7, there were no commercials.

Therefore, the show had to generate an income by advertising products to the viewers. For example, when Truman’s wife showed off her recent purchase, a Chef Pal, she listed many unique characteristics about the product, hoping some of the millions of viewers would purchase it. This shows how much commercials and advertising can persuade us to purchase a product. Without even realizing it, TV viewing can influence people’s purchases. Second, a form of media displayed in the show can be described as broadcast media. The Truman Show was broadcasted all over the world and millions of people were watching it.

You could see this because during the movie people were shown watching the show in various places. For example, there was a man watching TV while in his bathtub and two security guards enjoyed the show while on patrol. This shows how TV can be addictive, and possibly interfere with our ability to complete everyday tasks. Finally, Truman was basically living in an artificial world. Everything was planned, and the actors were well educated to make Truman believe everything about his life existed in Seahaven. This shows how people can be influenced to believe that something is real or true but in reality it is not.

He had a wife who did not love him, a teacher who did not support what he was trying to go after, and a friend who did not actually mean what he said. Truman was influenced by the world and people around him, making him believe everything was normal and not planned out. The world Truman was born into would not have been the way it was without the help of Christof, the show’s producer. Everything in Seahaven was operated by machines and computers. These computers were basically controlled my Christof’s orders. Early in his life, Truman was traumatized by his father’s death at sea. He grew up thinking it was his fault.

Because of Christof’s planning of the death, Truman was always scared of water. The only way off of Seahaven was by boat, therefore Christof knew he would be able to keep Truman under his control. Christof also did a good job of increasing his audience numbers. When viewers saw the heart-felt moment of Truman reuniting with his father years later, the number of viewers increased. Christof made the scene stand out by changing camera angles and playing background music. In addition, since Truman wanted to make his way to Fiji, Christof strategically planned different events in order to slow Truman down so he wouldn’t leave the island.

An example of this is when Truman went to purchase a plane ticket, but the flights were all sold out for over a month. Also, when the bus he was going to ride broke down. This proves that Christof manipulated Truman for his own purpose. Christof controlled everything in Truman’s life from the weather to who Truman was going to spend his life with. All these points prove how Truman was being used for Christof’s benefit; to increase the show’s ratings and to gain an income. The storyline of The Truman Show shows us how media affects our lives in many different ways.

From something as simple as watching a reality TV show like Survivor to using 5000 cameras to produce a movie. Truman grows up with his world, friends, and even family all being a lie. Christof is the one who did this to Truman. When publicity and fortune become more important than what is right, some people may not realize that what they are doing to others may be harming them. When an opportunity arises, it is sometimes all about what will benefit them. With Truman going through this experience, his eyes most likely opened up to what the real world could be like, and how the world is not always as it seems.

The coffee machine In the office used to be the place where people gathered to talk about the TV shows they had watched the night before. Nowadays watching television Isn’t Just about enjoying your favorite program on the sofa. 95% of the public social conversation around Film and Television happens on Twitter and other social networks. People exchange with other fans and viewers, share their opinions and engage with each other via Twitter, Mainstream, Faceable and co.

Studies have shown that especially the younger audience watches television with two eyes on the screen and a third on the smartened or computer. This “second-screen-trend” has started a new movement of advertising, targeting specifically this younger audiences and open up a whole new market of advertising on Television. Many brands have already connected their Twitter accounts with TV advertising, using washrags. This leads us to the question: How does the washrag-trend change marketing and advertising In the TV and Media landscape?

In this essay I will discuss the use of washrags as a marketing tool In the film and television Industry and how this new trend might Impact on my future career goals as a writer In the television Industry. One might catch himself asking, “What an earth is a washrag? “. The washrag symbol (#) is mainly found on social networks like Twitter, Mainstream and Pinsetters and quite recently Faceable joined the circle of washrag users. A washrag symbol is used to unite specific tweets, photos, posts etc. About particular topics.

It’s a way of organizing or grouping those posts. Washrags can help users on Twitter and Mainstream to find topics that are similar to their own posts or interests. However, the Washrag is also a very economical but effective marketing tool. The marketers of big rims and companies can track the washrag routine of social network users undo create trends to boost their own companies. The washrag makes it possible for them to research popular trends on Twitter and how many messages were sent regarding a specific washrag wealth a particular time frame.

It can also be used to boost your visibility on social networks. If enough Individuals promote a washrag It will “trend” and attract more social network users. Ever since 2010 the most popular washrags at any given moment have been displayed on the front page of Twitter as “Trending Topics”. Simply put, washrags are a great way to organize Tweets, posts and photos but it is also very beneficial way of advertising a company, show or new products.

Furthermore, television networks have been quick to notice the power of the washrag by displaying it in the bottom corner of the screen during a show or putting it in the end of a commercial. These types of washrags are called “branded washrags” as opposed to “organic washrags” which are started by fans or non – professional twitter users. Branded washrags can, for instance, serve as a tool of creating hype around an upcoming episode of a TV show, event or film and stir up a conversation between fans. Then, the washrag Is usually the name of the program or the topic that Is discussed.

It seems as if the washrag had been around forever, however Twitter joined the clan quite recently in 2013. But even though the Washrag is a fairly new trend it has already completely changed the way TV shows and Films are advertised. Only a couple of years ago, a new show or a new movie would be mainly promoted by the star of the film, by attending red carpet events or making an appearance on a popular talk show to spread the word about their newest movie. Professionally made posters and trailers could be seen on television or your local bus stop.

Whilst those techniques are still used, the posters or the trailers would now feature a little washrag symbol in the corner. Of course, a famous actor can still promote a new movie, but generally speaking, the marketing nowadays happens on Twitter and social networks, where fans are spreading the word of a new film or TV show by using the washrag. This has opened up a way to connect Television and social media and overall, the way of advertising has become much more interactive, meaning the audience plays a key role in the process.

This is clearly visible in interactive shows, such as talk shows, live sport events or big gala events like the Golden globes or the Academy Awards. Here, the washrag is not only an active way of engaging the viewers but also a possibility to ask questions and get in touch with the makers or stars of the show. Some shows, such as “Project Runway’, even give each contestant their own washrag for voting purposes. Likewise, the BBC family drama “Pretty Little Liars” gives a good example of the interactive usage of washrags between fans and the cast and rioters of the show.

This might be partly due to the young age of the target audience, who are in their teens and mostly communicate with their friends via Faceable and Twitter. The series revolves around the mystery of a girl’s disappearance and when asked, the series creator / show runner l. Marlene King hints at future story developments based on which the audience can attempt to solve the mystery. These are Just some of many shows that are successfully using the washrag for marketing purposes.

For professionals working in marketing this means, in order to built a brand they will eve to create a campaign specific washrag in order to attract people on twitter to talk about their product, raise awareness and engage the target audience, as well as following current washrag trends in order to make their content relevant to trending topics. While the star of the show or film still plays an important role in the promotion process, the real marketing happens through the fans and social network users.

The physical advertisement, such as posters has to big parts been replaced with the much more economical and at least as efficient advertisement through social networks, using washrags. This means the target audience who is spreading the word of a new show, movie or product all over the World Wide Web, became a key role in modern advertising. Therefore, the audience becomes more and more influential and even manages to reach out to big production companies and media groups. A good example for how powerful the audience’s impact really is, is the NBC show “Community’ which has been facing a constant threat of cancellation.

In an attempt to safe the show, the show runners inserted the washrag ” #Accommodativeness ” at the end of the season three finale and started a campaign to safe the show. The fans picked up the washrag quickly and as NBC noticed the trending washrag and how much attention the show had been given, influential the users of social networks are if it comes to marketing, but also that washrags can be a inexpensive or even free marketing tool. This leads me to my next point. How much does the washrag trend and the second – screen – trend influences me as an independent filmmaker and writer and how can I use the trend to my advantage?

As an independent filmmaker it would be hard to run a professionally organized campaign in order to promote a new project, since there is usually no budget for advertising placements on television, posters or even professionally designed campaigns. For me, social media represents a free or affordable alternative to promote my projects. The washrag is a no budget film- marketing tool that can boost my appearance on the Internet. The more creative the washrag, the more successful the self-initiated campaign can be. Many “No Names” on Twitter have more followers than some celebrities.

This proves that social media platforms such as Twitter are a great way to market your brand, film or product. Furthermore, from a writer’s point of view, who would ideally like to work in television, it is always useful to keep an eye on marketing trends while writing an episode. This way, the writer can already think of “washables puns” in the show or tastiness that could be used for washrag advertising, such as #Accommodativeness in Community, or even specifically create washrags for fans to interact in the Twitter community, much like in the example of Pretty Little Liars.

However, all good things aside, the washrag trend also has its downside and using a washrag campaign for promotion purposes can potentially be a risky business. While it is fairly safe to say that a successful washrag campaign has the potential to raise awareness and increase online conversations, it can certainly be hard to predict the outcome. Once the washrag is out there, the marketers have no control over it and the development that the campaign might take is completely in the hands of the social media users. Some brands had to learn this lesson the hard way.

When McDonald’s introduced their washrag campaign “#Mysteries” in 2008, the campaign quickly developed a life of it’s own and the designed washrag was used by Twitter users to tell their negative stories about the fast food chain. My personal favorite example of “how washrags can go wrong” is the “#Undersecretaries” washrag campaign which was created to mourn the death of Margaret Thatcher. Instead of reading the washrag “Undersecretaries” users read it as “#Undersecretaries” and as result accidentally mourned for the wrong lady.

Status updates such as ” R. L. P Cheer. At least now we’ll find out about life after love. #Undersecretaries ” amused the online community for days, but had very little to do with the actual events. In conclusion it can be said, that the development of the washrag trend within the sat seven years of its first appearance on twitter, clearly demonstrates the importance of collaboration between social networks and the television and film industry in order to successfully market a new film or TV show.

The washrag trend has completely transformed the way of advertising in the TV and media landscape and given the audience a much bigger role in the advertising process. Moreover, it gives small companies or independent artists like me an opportunity to market themselves and create an online appearance to raise awareness to their films or handled carefully. In other words, marketers need to think about how washrags can be in cooperated into their media campaigns without losing the control over the narrative.

Compare how two television programmes you have studied offer comic representation of gender

In this essay I intend to use two sitcoms to answer the question. Gender representation is a major part of many sitcoms and I will be looking into why this is, and how they are represented comically. I will be using an episode of Absolutely Fabulous and an episode of Keeping Up Appearances to provide me with examples to support my ideas and opinions.

* Absolutely Fabulous- Eddie- comical features:

Over dressed, flamboyant & eccentric appearance

No sense of moral or political correctness (buying merchandise from African villages)

Physical behaviour- poor co-ordination of arms and hands- looks comical- lots of movement. (Example- when arrives late in & faces questioning from Saffy)

Voice-sounds younger than she is & talks like she is younger- comical because trying to hide from her real age

Language- talks like a teenager, talks to daughter like she is her mum (role reversal)

Also degrading to daughter, loud and immature behaviour.

Not stereotypical mum- quite the opposite, stereotypical teenager. (mood swings & behaviour, dress etc)

Main interest is men- questions Saffy about when she will finally get a boyfriend.

Generally most of her features are exaggerated to increase comical value.

Saffy- Comical features:

Very boring/ sensible dress sense, dull colours & appearance- even though a teenager.

Sensible & boring- role reversal with her mum- example- when telling mum off about returning home late.

Body language- reserved, sensible, quiet and controlled.

Tries to make deals & compromise with her mum- role reversal again. Also with Patsy- T.V show.

Well spoken, doesn’t use slang, swear or shout.

Stereotypical mum, portrayed through a daughter 9role reversal with her mum)

Relies heavily on Saffy.

Generally most of her features are exaggerated to increase comical value.

Patsy- Comical Features:

Shows how women can get wherever they want- slept with her Boss to get a better job.

Pretends to be professional.

Dresses like she’s on a catwalk- completely inappropriate & ridiculous. Uses too much make up & has an overdone hairstyle.

Addicted to cigarettes and alcohol.

Tries to use and manipulate Saffy- uses sob story to make her appear on T.V show.

Appears to be very shallow with not much of a life & few friends- when she is desperate to go to lunch with Eddie, as has no one else to go with.

Generally most of her features are exaggerated to increase comical value.

Other notes: Patsy and Eddie- more than best friends, rely on & need each other.

Magazine editors- all similar to Patsy. Some appear very aristocratic. Main editor- very professional, smartly dressed, busy, taking what some would perceive as a male role.

Patsy and Eddie try to get as much free stuff as they can from the building- demonstrates that although they behave like the others, they cant afford to live the lifestyle or dress the same.

T.V show- Presenter is typical morning T.V presenter- dress, behaviour and style. Very awkward situation & patsy doesn’t know what to do or say, and fails to appreciate the situation- national television.

Keeping Up Appearances

Hyacinth- Self obsessed, eccentric & extremist. Overpowering and controlling. She is embarrassed of her family except for her rich sister. Very Snobbish. Tries to show off to visitors and family/ friends. Obsessed with material goods & values as well as appearances. Centre of attention. Speaks freely & says what she thinks about others, unaware of others feelings.

Richard- Does as he is told, also finds Hyacinth dominating and overpowering. Puts her before his job although it should be the other way round, he finds it difficult to say no to her. Highly sarcastic.

Elizabeth- She does not like Hyacinth and is very nervous around her- does not want to do or say the wrong thing. Discusses Hyacinth with her Husband- make jokes and dislike her, particularly Emmet.

Daisy- Poor appearance, obviously no money. Tries to do & say the right thing for Hyacinth, like Elizabeth, very nervous around her.

Daisy’s husband- Very poor appearance, unaware or not bothered. Dislikes Hyacinth. However is not that uncomfortable around her- tries to take biscuits from tin. Again, as with Richard, dry & sarcastic humour.

Other Notes: more than gender issues- family & social as well. Hyacinth is centre of attention for all wrong reasons. Hyacinth and Richard have different values in life (far more material) to Daisy and her husband.

Conclusion.

I conclude that representation of gender is a major part of these two sitcoms. In absolutely fabulous, gender representation is used to make comical situations of women, but underneath, there is a moral and it is saying this is how women are and have ended up but that not all end up this way. It is showing the viewer how women can be, although this is a highly exaggerated situation, I’m sure many can relate to, or know somebody who relates to at least one of the characters in the show. It focus more on gender representation between family and close friends.

However, Keeping Up Appearances focuses more on the gender representation and its comical values between relatives and neighbours from different social classes. Again, as with Ab Fab, it mostly features women and the comical features between them, and men play a smaller role.
