The Hazard of Internet, Cell Phone, and Television Addiction

I am a technology addict. When I have my computer connected to the internet, I can forget the time. I am very busy to search any informations through the internet. Beside internet, I also use my cell phone to chat with my friends all day long. One more activity that can make me addicted is spending my time to watch my favorite TV programs. Yeah, those three kinds of technology are very enjoyable. But, I want people to know the potential risk of over using internet, cell phone, and television in the daily life.

First of all, those three kinds of technology make us lazy. Take a look when we are too enjoy watching our favorite TV programs, we will postpone our assignments. We will delay them in 5 minutes later, then 5 minute later again, and again, and finally we don’t finish them. Moreover, our time for studying are reduce. We are more interested watching television, browsing through internet, or chatting by phone than study the lesson. When we get assignments from lecturers, we just copy and paste from internet.

Once we are too over using those technologies, we will be very wasteful person. for example, If we chat with friends all day long, we will spend so much money to pay phone bills. If we are blogging through the internet, we also have to pay the bandwidth bills. Or maybe, sometimes we don’t turn off the computer or the television until we are fall asleep, so the electric claim will increase. Thus, our monthly expense will uncontrolable.

Some studies find that over use of those technologies can create diseaseses. A simple example is if we are sitting in front of the screen for a long time without rest, absolutely we will get stomachache, headache, and back pain. The radiation of television or computer screen are also dangerous for our eyes. Just take a look to me, who has been suffered myopic since I become television addict. Another case is when we are using cell phone, actually, we are potentially get the brain cancer.

According to Vini Khurana, one of Britain’s top neurosurgeons, using cell phones for more than 10 years can effectively double risk of developing the cancer, such as Vestibular schwannoma (accoustic neuroma) and Astrocytoma (Karachi, 2008). How terrible they are, aren’t they? No doubt that those three kinds of technology bring big impact in our life. They give us pleasure and happines. So we can very addict of them. But, they will be very dangerous for us, if we can not manage the time to use them. Thus, cosidering the potential risk of them are very important. (an23)

Health effects of EM radiation in cellular phones

Part 1 ( Identifying a Subject )

Identified subject isHealth effects of EM radiation in cellular phones

Cellular phones communicate via wireless frequence ( RF ) transmittal in a web dwelling of aerials or base Stationss. The term “cellular telephone” refers to the localized or fragmented nature of the overall web. Base Stationss provide connexion for a little part. The webs used in nomadic telephone following four chief criterions viz. GSM, WCDMA, UMTS, and LTE ( Nair and Morgan 89 ) . Antennas every bit good as the nomadic French telephone are two beginnings of electromagnetic radiation ( EMR ) . Radiation from the aerial is typically low but that from the French telephone is more intense. There are many beginnings of electromagnetic radiation and this radiation has magnetic every bit good as electric Fieldss. The survey of the magnetic every bit good as electric Fieldss has many enormous benefits to humanity. It allows applied scientists to utilize radiation for practical and safe applications. Electromagnetic radiation is measured in wavelength as the diagram below shows.

[ beginning: Oatley 56 ]

The longer wavelength has low energy, the shorter wavelength has more energy, and therefore a possible beginning of ionising radiation. The nomadic phone system falls about halfway along the spectrum. The energy is the beginning of ionising consequence that causes malignant neoplastic disease when in contact with human organic structure.

This subject relates to the primary constructs of the class because it deals with electromagnetic radiation. I found this subject interesting because on one manus, it deals with application of electromagnetisms in communicating and on the manus possible wellness impact of users. I feel that in this instance, engineering is seen as a double-edged blade. Lifes of one million millions of people in the universe have changed due to acceptance of cellular devices. However, there are lingering inquiries about the safety of the devices.

Health effects of EM radiation in Cellular Telephones

Topic Overview and Background

Globally, more than 6.9 billion people use nomadic phones. Harmonizing to International Agency for Research on Cancer, the electromagnetic Fieldss produced by cellular phones are perchance carcinogenic. This averment is non universally accepted and more research is being carried out to find how nomadic phones are. World wellness organisation ( WHO ) is expected to carry on formal hazard appraisal following twelvemonth to find the full impact of exposure to cellular phones electromagnetic Fieldss.

None of the modern engineerings is every bit omnipresent as cellular phone. In some states, more than half of the population uses a nomadic phone device. The figure of cellular phone devices in the universe is expected to make a astonishing 9 billion by 2020. Most of the new proprietors will come from developing states where fixed telephone was nonexistent before the debut of nomadic phones. Given the big figure of phones in the market, every bit good as broad acceptance, it is of import to understand the impact of cellular radiation on human wellness.

Cellular phones transmit wireless waves through a web of base Stationss. The base Stationss are basically antennas. The wireless frequence moving ridges transmitted are electromagnetic Fieldss, which are non ionising like X raies or gamma beams. Cellular phone wireless frequence moving ridges can non interfere with the body’s chemical bonds.

Electromagnetic radiation released by cellular phone is a signifier of radiation though non-ionizing one. It is thought that the heat absorbed by the organic structure cells and tissues trigger unnatural cell divisions merely like ionising radiation does. Radiation is unsafe to human wellness. From laboratory surveies, radiation mutagenesis causes DNA omissions, DNA misrepair, and DNA misrecombination. Ionizing radiation causes dual strand in DNA to interrupt. A survey carried out on spacemans suggest that they are exposed to radiation degrees of about 147.5 mSv which causes additions frequence of chromosomal aberrances after flight to infinite ( David 34 ) . These aberrances are minimum or absent before the flight. This suggests that chromosomal aberrances can be straight attributed to cosmic radiation in infinite. Scientists have long thought that one time radiation hits the cell, the Deoxyribonucleic acid is damaged and job merely occurs when the cell is unable to to the full mend the harm. However, emerging grounds suggest that when cells are exposed to radiation, it produces genomic instability. This means that radiation causes harm that merely becomes seeable in future coevalss.

Cellular phones are radio frequence senders and they operate 450 and 2700 MHz at their extremum within the scope of 0.1 to 2 Wattss. Transmission occurs merely when the device is turned on. Exposure to the electromagnetic beams depends on the distance between the user and the device. As the distance between the French telephone and a individual additions, exposure to radio frequence starts to fall quickly. When a device is for illustration 30 centimetres from the organic structure as is the instance when a user is directing message or shoping the cyberspace, exposure to electromagnetic Fieldss is significantly low. For minimal exposure, the best cellular phones are the custodies free 1s. Hands free cellular phones allow the user to pass on when the phone is at a safe distance from the organic structure. In add-on to utilizing custodies free devices, exposure to radio frequence radiation is low when doing a call in an country with good response. The quality of response determines the sum of power used by phone and the low the power the lower the exposure to radio frequence field exposure. In infirmaries aeroplanes, cellular phones are prohibited because they can interfere with some medical and navigation equipments.

Health effects of EM radiation in Cellular Telephones

The wellness hazard of nomadic phone usage have been studied extensively in the last 20 old ages and research workers have non been able to set up once and for all that the usage of cellular phones exposes users to put on the line of malignant neoplastic disease or other medical conditions. The chief mechanism through which the wireless frequence energy interacts with the both is tissue heating. When wireless frequence energy is in big sums, organic structure tissues can potentially heat up therefore enduring injury. Cellular phones releases low wireless frequence energy and therefore the tegument absorbs most of the energy released or other tissues found on the surface of the organic structure. Consequently, cellular energy released consequences in really small temperature rise in the encephalon or any delicate variety meats.

Beyond heating organic structure tissues, scientists have besides focused on possible intervention of organic structure cardinal mechanism and the consequences have been negative. Cellular phones wireless frequence Fieldss do non interfere with electrical activity inside the encephalon, sleep form, cognitive map, or blood force per unit area. Theoretically, wireless frequence energy at high degrees should interfere with the organic structure maps but at low degrees, it appears safe. wireless frequence energy at degree below that can do tissue heating have no impact on voluntaries studied by research workers in many surveies. One country of concern that has been studied intensively is symptoms of electromagnetic hypersensitivity that some people have reported. Surveies on these instances suggest that there is no causal relationship between the usage of cellular phones and development of electromagnetic hypersensitivity status.

In the short squad, cellular phones frequence Fieldss appear to be harmless, at least harmonizing to surveies carried out so far. However, there are concerns that there is harm below the degree that can non be perceived in the short term. Surveies looking at the long-run hazard of wireless frequence field exposure examine possible association between encephalon tumour and usage of cellular devices. These types of surveies have been impeded by the fact that nomadic phones became widespread merely a decennary ago. Cancers typically show up many old ages after the event that led to abnormal cell division that lead to malignant neoplastic disease.

Research workers focus on instances that become apparent after short periods. Harmonizing to International Agency for Research on Cancer ( IARC ) , nomadic phone usage does non increase the hazard of developing conditions such as glioma or meningioma ( Herman 56 ) . These conditions have non increased significantly in the last 10 old ages since the debut of Mobile. This indirect grounds appear to propose that even in the long term, the hazard of developing malignant neoplastic diseases is low.

IARC consider radiofrequency electromagnetic Fieldss as carcinogenic although there is deficiency of surveies that have positively linked radiofrequency energy with malignant neoplastic disease. Lack of information is straight attributable to the fact that cellular phones have merely been in usage for a few old ages whereas malignant neoplastic disease develops over a long period. It is thought that the issue will be clearer with clip as younger coevals that has grown up utilizing cellular phones mature holding been exposed to phone radiation for decennaries.

My Personal Interest in the subject

I am interested in this subject because it deals issues associating to electric, magnetic Fieldss, and possible wellness consequence after usage for a drawn-out period. As a cellular phone proprietor, I have been, like everyone else, concerned about the hazard it exposes to my wellness.

How I Turned Cell Phone Addiction Into a PR Opportunity

Table of contents

I attended a business dinner recently and was appalled that three out of the six people at my table never looked up from their phones to make conversation. They were too busy texting, emailing and taking pictures of themselves and their courses while the rest of us quietly observed with disgust.

Whatever happened to the art of conversation? Are cellular devices dictating how we interact with clients, friends and family? As technology changes, so must the rules for courteous behavior.

In 2002, when cell phones were starting to proliferate, I founded my very own special event: National Cell Phone Courtesy Month. My mission was twofold: to garner some publicity for my etiquette business and to educate and enlighten the public on how to become more courteous cell phone users.

I submitted my idea to , which accepted it into its annual publication. At the same time, I wrote a press release which I sent out to various media outlets. To my surprise, I received an enormous amount of media attention, including a call from Sprint’s public relations firm. We struck up a deal, and I was subsequently fortunate enough to serve as Sprint’s cell phone etiquette for nearly six years. This relationship helped me garner even more media attention and boosted my income!

Fourteen years later, my tips still appear in hundreds of magazines, newspapers and internet articles around the world. Cell phone courtesy is more important than ever and should be observed every day of the year. That’s why these eight tips will never go out of style.

1. Avoid those cutesy ring tones.

Although your specialized ring tone might express your personality, it can be annoying in business settings. Set your phone to vibrate or silent when you are in the company of others.

2. Let voicemail take the call.

Voicemail is your convenient tool to take messages when you are unavailable; use it to avoid accepting calls during business meetings or in a public setting. The exception is when you are expecting or already on an important call, as with your doctor. In that case, alert your companions that you may be receiving a call and apologize in advance.

3. Make people your top priority.

Don’t let poor cellphone etiquette ruin your relationships with friends, clients or coworkers. People may feel disrespected, unimportant or ignored if you grab every call or constantly look down at your phone. If you absolutely must take or make a call, excuse yourself, step away and make the call brief.

4. Don’t text under the table.

You may think you are being discreet by texting from your lap, but people know exactly what you are doing. Instead, turn off your phone and interact with the people you are with. Unless it’s an emergency, your text can wait.

5. Keep your phone out of sight.

Having your phone on the table invites you to check it over and over again, distracting both you and your dining companions. Turn off the ringer and stash your device for the duration of the meal or event.

6. Keep your private matters to yourself.

Use discretion when discussing private matters or sensitive business topics in the presence of others. Reserve topics such as your medical report, romantic affairs, personal arguments or deals gone bad for private conversations.

7. Use your ‘inside’ voice.

Even when you are in a noisy room, your cell phone’s voice receiver will pick up your normal voice. There is no need to “cell yell” or speak louder than normal.

8. Don’t be a cell phone cop.

If you encounter someone who is speaking too loudly on a cell phone, don’t take matters into your own hands. Walk away or find someone in a position of authority to address the situation. If you must confront the offender, do so discreetly and diplomatically. Say something like, “Excuse me, would you mind keeping your voice down? I’m having trouble concentrating. Thank you.”

According to a Pew Research Center on mobile etiquette, 82 percent of adults surveyed said that seeing people use their phones in social settings frequently or occasionally hurts their conversations. A whopping 89 percent said they had used their phone during their most recent social gathering. That being said, we all need to be more mindful and considerate while using our cell phones in public. If such considertion started happening across the land, perhaps we could eradicate National Cell Phone Courtesy Month altogether.

No Cell Phones for Kids

Cell phone is considered as an important thing in human life nowadays. We no longer rely on public phones that once we did. The cell phones users are not only people that come from the working class, but also children. Is cell phone really that important? There are a lot of disadvantages of using mobile phones which involves children from age six until thirteen. Some people might think that kids should have cell phones. However, I do believe that kids should not have cell phones.

Health, financial and social issues are among of the topics that related with the disadvantages of using cell phones for children. Cell phones can be a distraction and used for bullying. Cell phones can be an easy method for cheating is true, too. Also, cell phones can result in sleep deprivation. Spending a lot of time for using cell phones can result in poor grades. Additionally, Phone use can hamper family interaction. Children’s health affected from the use of cell phones because it contains magnetic waves.

Cell phones contain magnetic waves which is dangerous to human especially young children who immune system does not enough develop yet. They might suffer a severe disease such as brain cancer. Compare to the adult, the children have the potential to be affected is higher. Thus, the use of cell phones affected the children health. Also, it takes time away from children to go out and run with their friends. They prefer to play games or talk to each other by texting rather than to play outside.

Another issue that related with cell phones is financial. When the parents let their children to use cell phone from the early age, they tend to get distracted and use it without any limitation. Children will not consider the amount that have to pay when they use the cell phone. Moreover, they tend to follow the latest style of cell phones. They will want to buy the latest cell phones’ design or buy the cell phone’ gadgets, without even considering the amounts they have wasted.

Therefore, cell phones have caused bad effect for financial. The most affected is children social style in terms of friendship and love. In friendship, they are likely to procrastinate when they started to text their friend. They will chit chat until the wee hours in the morning and left their school work. What make it worst is when the fall in their relationship. They will start to bring their phone everywhere and text their partner whenever they can.

The Negative Effects of a Cellphone

When the first cellular phone was invented, its uses only went as far as a phone call. As time and technology advanced, so did the development of the cell phone. A basic phone today can make calls, take photos and videos and even function as a GPS. But with the advantages comes the disadvantages. The increased use of cell phones has had a negative influence on society. For example, the use of cellphones has limited socializing, the demand and costs have affected consumers negatively and they have also been a common factor in many car accidents, including fatalities. The dependency of cellphones has had a negative social effect.

The cell phone is probably one of the most commonly owned devices in America. “75% of all American teens ages 12-17 own a cell phone, and 66% use their phones to send or receive text messages. ” (Madden and Lenhart 2) The cell phone has become the primary source of communication for many people. The simplicity of typing a message, or making a phone call rather than relaying that message in person has resulted in a disconnect from society for many people. “Reliance on a relatively quick and cheap form of interaction means that we might dispense with the longer and more ponderous process of a personal visit. (Ling 185). So, although you may communicate more often through cellphones, the physical part of a relationship is neglected. As a result of depending on cellphones as a main source of communication one may, in a sense, forfeit a substantial portion of a much needed social life. Moreover, socializing is an acquired ability, an ability that is significant in the growth and maturation of children and teens. The over use of cellphones can impede one from fully exercising these abilities. A large number of people own and use cellphones regularly. So much so that it has become a societal norm.

Almost every place one may go cell phones are practically expected of them. For example, at some doctors’ offices they offer a free texting service to remind a patient of any appointment that he or she may have. Many clothing and grocery stores offer coupons and sales alerts that can be sent directly to a mobile device. But the problem comes when not everyone can afford to keep up with what society has labeled to be “the norm. ” There are many people who cannot afford to buy a phone let alone afford a phone bill every month. The cost for cellular service is xpensive and always increasing. According to a survey, “Of the 1,400 readers who responded, 80 noted their bill was between $190 and $210. On average, that group had 3. 1 phones, meaning the cost is about $65 per phone. People with bills near $250 paid $67 per phone” (Sullivan). As a result, a number of people reported that they felt the need budget and cut back in order to afford a phone bill. Unfortunately, society essentially requires people to have a cell phone, even with cut backs and budgeting, having a cell phone is not financially realistic for everyone.

The use of cellphones has shown to be very dangerous to drivers and their passengers. This is mainly due to the increase in texting and driving as well as the amount of phone calls made while behind the wheel. According to Madden and Lenhart, 52% of cell phone owning teens ages 16-17 say they have talked on a cell phone while driving. That translates into 43% of all American teens ages 16-17 (2). With such a high percentage of distracted drivers, the likelihood of accidents, with and without fatalities has also increased. In 2008 alone, there were 5,870 fatalities and an estimated 515,000 people were injured in police reported crashes in which at least one form of driver distraction was reported” (Madden and Lenhart 3). Every time a driver decides to use a cell phone while operating a vehicle, they are not only putting their lives in danger, but also the lives of their passengers, pedestrians, and other drivers. Since the invention of the cell phone, its uses and capabilities have become a part of an everyday American life, an everyday life which cell phones has impacted society negatively.

With an increased dependency on the cell phone, society and its growth have experienced major setbacks. Socialization, personal financials, and automotive drivers have all been effected in negative ways. This is mainly because the cell phone has evolved and is now made to do nearly anything one may think of. So although the cellphone was intended to help with one’s everyday life, what seems like a good idea at first may not affect society positively in the long run.

Cellphones Should Be Banned

Cellphones should be banned Nowadays you see cellphones everywhere: at the store, at a restaurant, and even at the theater. People seem not able to put them down or turn them off. Cellphones have negative effects on health, society, and safety. I have arranged my discussion in this order, ascending of importance, in order to give the reader some insight in the world of cellphones, and why cellphones should be banned. Cellphones can cause severe stress in all generations. Children and young adults are always on; they eat, sleep and shower with their cellphones.

Gaby Badre, MD, PhD, of Sahlgren’s Academy in Gothenburg, Sweden found out that “Teenagers who excessively use their cell phone are more prone to disrupted sleep, restlessness, stress and fatigue” (American Academy of Sleep Medicine). While teenagers are stressed when they are not on their phone, always being on can stress people in the workforce. “Increasing use of cell phones and pagers may be blurring the boundaries between work and home and raising stress levels at both places” (Warner).

Even though there is just anecdotal evidence of cellphone related cancer and brain damage in adults, evidence was found that cellphones can damage a child’s brain. Children using mobile phones absorb as much as double the amount of radiation through their heads as adults. The leading scientist Dr. Om Ghandi, from the University of Utah, found that a child’s brain can absorb radiation across its entire surface. Cellphone radiation mainly effects the neurological system of a child, “causing headaches, lack of concentration, memory loss and sleeping disorders.

It can also cause epilepsy in children” (international parenting association). Further can radiation of cellphones harm body cells and DNA. In Europe 12 research groups, worked on the project called Reflex. Over four years the researchers, coordinated by the german research group Verum, “studied the effect of radiation on human and animal cells in the laboratory” (international parenting association). They found that single and double-strand DNA breaks, after being exposed to electro magnetic fields. Professor Leif Salford, who headed the research at Sweden’s prestigious Lund University, says ‘the voluntary exposure of the brain to microwaves from hand-held mobile phones’ is ‘the largest human biological experiment ever’” (international parenting association). Like cellphones have an effect on health, they have an impact on society. Cellphones affect social interactions, communication, and etiquette. When you are watching a group of young people going out, or waiting for the bus together, each person of the group is either texting or calling a friend that is not with the group right now, instead of talking to each other.

They avoid uncomfortable situations and confrontations by either not answering a call or sending a text message. “Text messaging is dangerous, not only does it ruin social interaction between humans, writing skills and expression. Everything becomes so impersonal and simple” (Marquez). There is no awkward silence or nonverbal response connected to text messaging. You can basically say anything you want in text messages without revealing your feelings or opinions. Text messaging is impersonal and young adults seems to lose the ability to have a face to face conversation. Moreover do cellphone have a great impact on Socioeconomic Diversity.

Cellphones and cellphone contracts are expensive. Not every parent or student can afford a cellphone with unlimited text, call, and data. This may set young adults apart from their peer and make them subject of bullying. “People can be inconsiderate when using the phone in public” (ehow) – phone etiquette is poor or does not exist at all. Answering phone calls during a movie or theater show, to holding up the line at the store, or bumping into people on the street, because of focusing on the cell phone instead of their surroundings, are all examples of poor cell phone etiquette.

But the biggest problem with cellphones is safety. The National Safety Council states that 28% of all car accidents are caused by cellphone use behind the wheel. The study “A comparison of Cellphone Driver and the Drunk Driver”, by Daniel L. Strayer and et al. , at the University of Utah in 2006, states that talking on the phone while driving equals a blood alcohol of 0. 08%. While teenagers are texting, they spend about 10 percent of the time outside the driving lane they’re supposed to be in (Edgar Snyder).

But there are other crucial safety issues connected with cellphones beside cellphone use while driving. Sexting, the submission of sexual messages or pictures, is becoming more and more popular among teen agers, and young adults. “In January 2009, three high school girls from Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania were charged with manufacturing and disseminating or possessing child pornography after they allegedly sent nude or seminude cell phone pictures of themselves to three male classmates. The boys, ages sixteen and seventeen, were charged with possession of child ornography for having the images on their phones. The girls involved were even younger, just fourteen and fifteen years of age (Calvert). News like that are disturbing, but far from uncommon. Young adults and teenagers reported that sexting is regarded as normal, and prerequisite for dating and hooking up. But sexted images and messages are not safe. With todays cellphone technology it is easy to send those pictures viral, online, without the initial sender knowing. The sender can be publicly exposed without their knowing.

Furthermore can others take your picture without your consent. When convicted for distributing or owning child pornography, a teenager or young adult can face the chance to be labeled as sex offenders, “a stigma that could haunt them throughout their lives, all for what one might consider a youthful, sophomoric indiscretion” (Calvert). Cellphones appear to be very convenient, yet they come with severe side effects. After considering the health, society, and safety issues that cellphones bring with them a ban of cellphones is justified.

Unfortunately a ban is not in sight for right now so we need to make sure that children, teenagers and young adults learn how to use their cellphones right, without depending on them too much. Internet and Cell Phone

What did you find most interesting and/or surprising? What information really stood out for you when researching this topic & why? What’s the most important thing we, your audience, should take away from your research? -Originally the cell phone served as a tool for business management. Now, cell phones serve as a tool for social connection, in other words, managing social relationships. Across qualitative and quantitative studies, users of the cell phone all report using their phone for social purposes.

However, scholars have argued the cell phone might actually serve as a tool for social isolation (Bugeja, 2005). On the other hand, the cell phone has been argued to function as a social connection device, especially among teens (Ling, 1999a). Therefore, the social use of cell phones has proven to be a rich area for communication research, with researchers exploring various ways in which cell phone use affects social interaction, both isolating and connecting involved persons. -Although observational research shows that most cell hone users retreat from social settings when they are using the cell phone in a public place (Ling, 1999b), findings also suggest that cell phone users use the cell phone in public spaces as a form of exclusion (Bugeja, 2005; Ling, 2002). The survey found that 13% of surveyed adults said they had used their phones to look busy, so they wouldn’t have to talk with others. That percentage more than doubled among young adults aged 18 to 29 years, 30% of whom said they’d faked cell phone use as an avoidance mechanism.

Only 2% of the oldest (65 and older) respondents reported using cell phones to avoid dealing with others. unplugging may actually improve your social interactions. As Healthland reported last year, many people would argue that turning your phone off is a gesture of intimacy and affection for the people around you -The implications of this study are not only empirical, but serve to demonstrate the dangers that mobile communication technologies may pose if not used properly. Discretion of cell phone use is even evident in current state laws that prohibit drivers from talking on the phone while driving.

This alone testifies to the potential risk of danger that interactive mobile technologies pose for its users. A possible solution is to make users more aware of the effect of these mobile technologies on their attention, not only to strangers but even their surroundings. As proper etiquette exists for internet behavior, perhaps we ought to develop a social code of behavior for proper cell phone usage. http://healthland. time. com/2011/08/15/survey-1-in-8-fake-using-their-cell-phone-to-avoid-talking-to-others/
