A Focus on Main Character in the Book Fight Club

Social commentary is the act of imparting one’s opinion on the nature of society to another person. This is usually used with the idea of bringing a change in society by means of informing the general populace of a given problem. Problems range in topic and relevance from racism, poverty, and child abuse, to greed, individual identity, and chasing The American Dream. W.H. Auden said, “What the mass media offers is not popular art, but entertainment which is intended to be consumed like food, forgotten and replaced by a new dish.” While Auden says that today’s entertainment is disposable, the book Fight Club and the movie Secret Window should be recognized as social commentary.

The main character in Fight Club, the Narrator, and the main character in Secret Window, Mort Rainey, are both pursuing The American Dream. Their relentless pursuit of it drives them to split personalities and committing violent crimes. The term American Dream was first used by James Truslow Adams. He states:

The American Dream is that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement. [. . .] It is not a dream of motor cars and high wages merely, but a dream of social order in which each man and each woman shall be able to attain to the fullest stature of which they are innately capable, and be recognized by others for what they are, regardless of the fortuitous circumstances of birth or position (214-215).

In the United States’ Declaration of Independence our founding fathers “held certain truths to be self- evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.” In Secret Window, Mort Rainey had everything he could want. He had a big, beautiful house, nice vehicles, a beautiful wife, and a career as a Best Selling author. The Narrator from Fight Club had a high rise apartment, IKEA furniture, a high paying job with an important title, and even a Starbucks Coffee maker. These men were pursuing the American Dream.

On the other hand, Fight Club, with its graphic violence, shocking language and behavior, and explicit sexual references, is easy to dismiss as another schlock attempt at throw away entertainment. It has no meaning and is just another in a line of new wave stories meant for shock value. The book is fragmented. The chapter’s multiple plot lines interrupt each other. Snippets of thoughts and events from earlier in the book continuously return, creating a hyperactive fugue as words and phrases repeat and fold in on themselves. The text teases you with a little entertainment, and then totally destroys it with confusion.

Remember though that Fight Club aims to illustrate the binding power of social capitalism and the repercussions of such a lifestyle. The core problem is shown through the Narrator, whose life and identity has become his possessions. He works for a corrupt motor company whose need to turn a profit outweighs its obligation to ensure the safety of its customers. As society has molded him into forming his identity through his possessions, the Narrator feels that he is now gone, and that he is lost. He is trapped in the corporate world and finds himself increasingly dissatisfied with the fruits it is supposed to deliver.

To find his manhood, the Narrator returns to his primordial self, even beating himself up, to feel like a man again and break from the grasp of a capitalist society. Tyler Durden, the Narrator’s split personality, says, “First you have to give up…. first you have to know…. not fear…. Know that someday, you are going to die. It is only after we have lost everything that we are free to do anything” (Palahniuk 61). The Narrator finds that he is not alone in his need to get back to his real self. While he is on a business trip, Tyler (his split personality) devised a way to destroy his apartment and all his personal belongings.

When the Narrator returns home, he then realizes he has nothing. Tyler has opened the way into the Narrators life. Tyler shows him that his belongings are only hampering him and says the above statement. Tyler then starts Fight Club so that the Narrator, and others like him, can gain their masculinity back. A multitude of men congregate with the Narrator, searching for their lost identities and a sense of purpose in a society built on suppression of our natural instincts. Each man resorts to Fight Club in order to escape the false hope of the American Dream, which suppresses self-improvement, rather than facilitates personal growth. This is much the same with Mort Rainey from the movie Secret Window.

However, critics have seen the movie in this light, “Secret Window is filled with so many red herrings, one could have a veritable feast if one were to filet them, cream them, and serve them with a box of crackers. A big box” (Shulman). The movie is all over the place and only leaves unanswered

questions and open story lines. The storyline is shallow and all of the open story lines give no credence to any of the characters. It contains ridiculous nonsensical decisions and unexplained actions that defy common sense that are so typical to characters in this genre that one is never sure if they are catching clues to a legitimate resolution or simply watching more stupid behavior on screen and the crappy direction thereof.

We must consider this though: What did Mort have and lose that caused him to do what he did? He said it himself at one point in the movie when he was watching his wife and her new boyfriend leaving the house one morning. He said to himself, “This is not my beautiful house….this is not my beautiful wife…. anymore” (Secret). He realized what he had and was losing was his Dream. He had the beautiful house, a cabin in the woods, a beautiful wife, a prosperous job as an author, and even a child on the way at one point. Then he slowly loses each of them. He and his wife lose their first child to miscarriage.

This drives him to pick up a drink which he cannot put down. He then commits the gravest sin a writer can commit, which is plagiarism. Finally, after all of this, he loses his wife to a divorce that he cannot face. The combination of all of this added up to his mounting anger growing inside of him. Storing up this anger produced John Shooter, his split personality. We must realize that Shooter was created by Rainey’s pursuing and slowly losing his idea of the American Dream.

So, we must remember, while W.H. Auden says that today’s entertainment is disposable, the book Fight Club and the movie Secret Window should be recognized as social commentary.

Doe Deere is the creator and CEO of Lime Crime, an LA-based beauty line that offers fantasy-themed makeup and hair dye that is vegan and cruelty-free. Lime Crime’s mascot is a unicorn, indicating the rarity of her magical creations and the company’s kindness to animals. On her website you can find shockingly blue hair color called Anime and glittery fairy-green lipgloss named Meadow, to add the element of fantasy and fun to your style. Their newest line is called Alchemy, which includes colorful potion colors like toxic green and swirly purples. Doe Deere is not just creative and talented, but a clever entrepreneur. When her makeup line was launched in 2008, she started to post makeup tutorials for her new line. Her luminous colors and whimsical flair brought customers right to her. She also hosted contests and interacted with her audience on her blog.

Thanks to these efforts over the years, Lime Crime’s Instagram now has over 3 million followers. She is inspired by Generation Z, and hopes to inspire them with her fairytale colors and magical products. Ever since the beginning, Doe Deere has been passionate about animal safety in the makeup business. She wants her products to be safe for human skin and free from animal cruelty. For Doe, her greatest achievement with Lime Crime was the day she could finally donate to charity from the profits of her makeup line. Now Lime Crime donates to six different foundations, including the Bideawee Animal Shelter and HOLA for Kids in LA. From his perspective, black people were solely objections and was able to obtain the piano by giving Nolander 1.5 slaves. After they completed this trade, Miss Ophelia regretted it because she missed the company of her slaves. Boy Willie then carved their faces into the piano to help Miss Ophelia. In this situation, the physical piano demonstrates the dehumanization of slaves by Sutter.

Sutter’s ghost becomes attached to the piano. The piano carries such a heavy meaning because Berniece has to overcome her fear of playing the piano in order to let Sutter go. The central conflict of the play is between two siblings. Describe this conflict on a literal AND a metaphorical level. What two philosophical stances does the conflict reveal? Provide details to support your analysis. The central conflict of the play is between the two siblings, Berniece and Boy Willie. Berniece believes the spirits of her ancestors are connected to the piano. She does not want to sell the piano or even play the piano because she fears waking up her family’s spirits. He solely wants to sell the piano to obtain land without thinking about it. Similarly to the way Sutter traded to obtain the piano, without thinking too hard about it. This demonstrates the philosophical stances and differences of ancestral connections. In what ways might the ending of the play represent a triumph of bravery over fear? Throughout the play, there is a constant struggle between whether or not there is an ancestral connection to the piano, whether or not to play the piano or even sell the piano. When Doaker and Boy Willie finally plan to sell the piano and physically move the piano, Berniece warns them of its ancestral connections but Boy Willie disregards her warning saying that he is not afraid of death. Boy Willie feels that because he killed a cat as a child he has conquered death and has no fears. Bernice then conquers her fear, plays the piano, and releases Sutter’s ghost/spirit. The ending of this play was an ultimate moment of triumphing bravery over fear because even though Boy Willie to an extent caused this terrifying situation, Berniece knew what she had to do to save him. She played the piano even though she was scared, this brought up so many emotions and it was something she had stayed away from for so long. Berniece was brave, overcoming her fear to liberate Sutter’s soul.

The Stereotypical Role Of A Woman Demonstrating Her Bravery

By taking the Red Riding Hood myth and modernizing it, I depict in this passage that the author Mrs. Carter is illustrating a turn in traditional gender roles in this short story. Angela Carter was a feminist writer, knowing that I assume a feminist message, but also the short story has many metaphors and symbolism pointing towards a turn in traditional gender roles. ‘ ‘ takes place in a forested, country in the dead of winter. The narrator explains that wolves are dangerous creatures who live to terrorize and kill those less strong (Carter, Angela, and Camille). When food is scarce during the winter, they are especially more ruthless. Furthermore, they trap and kill any traveler that enters into the forest, which is their territory (Carter, Angela, and Camille).

The story’s protagonist is a blond child, even though she knows that wolves are worst in the barren months, she insists on carrying a basket of food to her sick grandmother ( Carter, Angela, and Camille). She stumbles around a handsome hunter who was in fact disguised and underneath was the werewolf. Further on the hunter gets to the grandma’s house first and eats her up. The werewolf took the old lady’s clothes and wore it. When the young unnamed girl arrives and encounters the werewolf rather than being afraid the blonde girl kissed him and seduced him. By doing so she lives but at the cost of her virginity and more.

In “ ,” Angela Carter conveys the way women in earlier times were submissive. The short story starts with the objectification of women and is seen in stereotypical roles of how “women” act. At the beginning of the story, the women are compliant and require a man to fight their battles. When a wolf attacked a girl, she was frightened and “made such a commotion” and the strong men with rifles had to save her. In another part of “ ” it states, “Get me my bowl of cabbage and be quick about it.” In that section, it presents how women were helpless and how the men were very dominant.

Although in the second part of the short story, it shifts to a young blonde girl being brave and strong-willed, and not relying on men. For example, it states in,” ”, “but she is also armed with a knife and unafraid”(Davidson, Morgaine). This renders a change in the role of how women are seen as defenseless and afraid. Another part in “ ,” exclaims, “when the girl saw that, she knew she was in danger of death.” ,but she doesn’t let her fear get the better of her. She shows bravery when approaching the wolf,” she stood up on tiptoe and unbuttoned the collar of his shirt”. She’s taken over the situation showing that women can equally sexually dominate and I depict from this that the author is presenting that women can attain the same features as men and not be the traditional submissive and helpless “woman” that the male dominant society has painted. In another quote of “ ,” it states, “All the better to eat you with.’

The girl burst out laughing; she knew she was nobody’s meat. She laughed at him full in the face, she ripped off his shirt for him and flung it into the fire, in the fiery wake of her own discarded clothing”. I picture in this passage that it shows the girl doesn’t rely on anyone but her own judgment for survival. So in this situation, she uses her sexual power to distract and overcome the lustful creature. She trusts her own instincts, and the girl sacrifices her virginity, even if it goes against the expectations that society has for women. The unnamed girl refuses to be a vulnerable and submissive figure to become another helpless victim. Additionally, this shows how the blonde girl gets out the stereotypical role of a “women” by showing her bravery and not showing submissive or fearful features.

Finally, my perspective and interpretation of “ ”is that the author is sending a feminist message and telling her audience that women are capable to the same actions as man. Plus presenting us with the message that women should not be afraid to go against the expectations that the society has for women. However, there are other interpretation of “ ” that analyze it in a different manner. Another analysis that I am fond of is the the message is about the innocence of the blonde girl. Again from the beginning, the short story informs the readers that the blonde girl lives in a bitterly cold region. Showing us it’s different from modern time and in that setting people grow up fast and live short, hard lives. Although, this child is not hardened like everyone else because ‘she has been too much loved ever to feel scared.’ Her family has coddled her and protected her from life’s harsh realities.

By doing this, they have civilized her, made her into a sweet and trusting girl. The girl’s innocence saves and endangers her life for she is trusting enough to believe in the hunter’s good intentions.“Soon they were laughing and joking like old friends. When he offered to carry her basket, she gave it to him although her knife was in it because he told her his rifle would protect them. As the quote above shows how innocent and unknown of when she’s in danger. Also saving her life, after all, the werewolf has just killed and eaten her grandmother, and she sees no harm but rather becomes immune to his evil intentions. Not only does she ignore her “grandmother’s clattering bones” in favor of consummating her relationship with the werewolf. Anyways this interpretation shows a different aspect that maybe it wasn’t her bravery but in fact her innocence that saved her life.

Through the short story, the readers can see Mrs. Carter’s strong belief in women voicing their belief and desire by taking action. The fact that the author Mrs. Carter states in the end that ‘It is Christmas Day, the werewolves’ birthday'(). This reveals her view that women should accept the fact that in every man and also woman, a beast lives in with them, just as the blonde girl had revealed her inner beast. Through this passage, Carter projects the message that in order to fight the evilness in the world, women must learn to use the powers given to them even if it means surreding to corruption.

Values Of Honor, Bravery And Leadership

In the story of Sundiata An Epic of Old Mali, we are introduced to the character of Sundiata the title character of the tale. In the story, Sundiata does a lot of heroic actions and certainly undergoes a heroic journey but is he an archetypal hero? According to Carl Jung “The Hero” is a person whose life is made up of adventure after adventure, their birth is surrounded by unusual happenstance, they will have to abandon their home and kingdom until they can return upon reaching manhood. The Hero will be characterized by their strength, endurance, bravery, honor, and their ability to survive hardship and risk their life and wellbeing for the good of all. This fits Sundiata to a fault, his life is filled with adventure from birth to his death and was characterized by the survival of all the hardships throughout his life.

Sundiata was born due to two separate foretold happenstances, the telling of his father, Naré Maghan, that his successor and the leader of a new grand Mali will be borne by an ugly woman brought to him by hunters, and the brother hunters who won Sogolon. He was born crippled and unable to walk until seven, his mother and family faced much ridicule due to this but when his mother confronted him he decided he would walk so that his mother would no longer be ashamed. He and his family were eventually chased out of Mali due to the scheming of his father’s first wife, Sassouma Bérété, where they wandered from kingdom to kingdom before eventually settling for a while at the kingdom of Mema.

There he grows into a man and learns the values of honor, bravery, and leadership, however, he knows he cannot stay in Mema he must return home and claim his place in Mali. He completes his “Hero’s Journey” through the defeat of the sorcerer-king Soumaoro Kanté and the division of the kingdoms and the renewal and rebirth of Mali. It is said that every text should be read in its historical context, that it helps us better understand the texts and what they meant in the time they were written. In taking this statement to heart when reading the accounts of Procopius and Ibn Khaldun in the History of the Wars and The Secret History from Procopius and The Muqaddimah from Ibn Khaldun we are able to grasp a deeper understanding of the accounts shared in the texts and what their viewpoints mean to our understanding of the history they shared.

At the beginning of both texts, as the History of the Wars and The Secret History are joined to a single location, there are short and concise backgrounds given for the author and the text that give context for the works and several questions meant to give the reader a background thought throughout the text, this completely changes how the reader views the text as without the background information or even the questions the reader would view and interpret the text completely different than with the information and questions. In the History of the Wars, we learn about the insurrection in Byzantine, Emporer and his court coerced into fighting the rebels and hear Empress Theodora’s rousing speech which caused them to do so. Due to the context that was given to us in the introduction, we understand how Procopius knew this information, as he was likely there due to his occupation as the private secretary of General Belisarius who was the most significant and important general lead by Emperor Justinian

Cultural Identity and Cultural Intelligence Functionalities

As the population grows year after year, we’re witnessing an expansion of diverse beliefs. When socializing with people of different perspectives whether it be in a casual setting or in a work set one must be knowledgeable of their views. It’s important to respect and place boundaries between one another. On occasion, some people have negative experiences in their life that guide their behavior and causes friction. It’s important to be open-minded and unbiased. In a leadership role, one must be capable of adapting to a variety of cultural situations. Being capable of adapting is defined as Cultural Intelligence (CQ). CQ is the capacity to function & manage efficiently in culturally diverse surrounding. In order to effectively implement CQ there must be four categories achieved which is, strategy, knowledge, motivation, & behavior. The competence within the four categories determines the effectiveness of the interaction.

To further clarify each step in CQ, a strategy is a skill that is required to manage cultural complication. The reason why having a strategic skill is important is that no individual has the same thoughts and behaviors (Include-Empower. n.d). Therefore, the strategy phase helps facilitate in selecting an organized response, then test & reflect on the precision of your assumption, & experiment with alternative approaches. In other words, you start building a cultural profile by conducting a trial & error until you locate a profile that best fits. Next is the knowledge phase, one must be open-minded & comprehending dissimilar cultural beliefs. Not only must one be open-minded but also vigilant of numerous dialects, customs, & looks. One must be prepared & knowledgeable of how to overcome some problematic cultural differences such as values, presumption & beliefs (Include-Empower. n.d).

The next category is motivation which is the will of being preparedness to socialize with people of different perceptions. By having the courage and taking the initiative one is mentally prepared for the obstacles to come. Some of the issues that may arise are explicit or unconscious biases, challenging exchange, & frustrating, stressful environments (Include-Empower. n.d). Throughout these troubling experiences, one must stay composed and professional. The last category is behavior which is the aptitude to communicate with others is a vocal and non-voiced matter. In other words, when you communicate with people of diverse viewpoints in a matter that they’re familiar to in order to gain their respect & building rapport. If these actions are constant the friction will subside.

Cultural sensitivity is something everyone has experience in their life. Such as offering pork to someone that doesn’t eat it. Sometimes you may say something accidentally that can offend someone from a different culture. According to Milton Bennett’s Development Model of Intercultural Sensitivity, there are six staged that a person must go through to become culturally sensitive: denial, defense, minimization, acceptance, adaptation, and integration (Center of Growth. n.d). By implementing these six stages it will help when dealing with culturally diverse circumstances. It also assists in gaining more in-depth knowledge & sensitivity for other’s experiences. Once you have mastered the 6 stages its unquestionable that future relations will improve because you’re now considering other’s worldviews other than your personal views.

To further clarify the meaning of the 6 stages denial is the first stage you encounter. In the denial stage, you’re blind to other viewpoints. You don’t put much effort to get to know or except other’s views other than your own. To conquer this phase one must be willing to analyze & except that the existence of other philosophies is present. The next phase is defense this is the point where you have come to acknowledge that there are numerous cultures out there. This is also the phase that will make you see your culture as either evolved or not evolved. Both groups see their own culture in positive stereotypes & the other culture in negative stereotypes. In other words, the conflicts proceed because both cultures views have an “us and them” way of thinking (Center of Growth. n.d).

The proceeding phase is minimization. At this point, the cultures of others are being categories to see fewer differences from one another. An example will be comparing facial features or simply stating we’re all human. Others may categories by involving religion such as saying, “we’re all creatures of God.” The minimization phase is a way of separating the differences and simply just becoming comfortable with many different perspectives. The fourth stage is acceptance which is the stage that you fully acknowledge other cultural views and you don’t degrade one over the other. At this point you see all cultural views as equally relevant and important (Center of Growth. n.d). If at one point you’re faced with a new culture you’re more curious and ask questions to comprehend it before judging.

The adaptation phase is when you are now fully comfortable with other cultures that you can behave accordingly to what is culturally appropriate. Abide by the regulations & have the capabilities to empathize within a different context. Feeling more confident to collaborate culturally appropriate with other cultures. This phase might look like you’re giving up on your own beliefs but not at all. This phase helps broaden who you are which facilitates the capabilities of recognizing & accepting different viewpoints & establish specified changed to your views in intent to work with people of different views. The last step is integration this step is simply the stress-free ability to enter & exit cultures deprived of affecting your personal views nor the individuals involved. Your beliefs are not affected whatsoever & remain intact throughout the experiences.

The mechanisms that are important within CQ are cognitive, physical, emotional, & motivational (Earley., Mosakowski. 2004). In the cognitive stage, you’re finding ways to match or correlate your views with someone else views in an attempt to relate with them. In the second component physical, you must be capable of altering your expressions. When interrelating with folks with dissimilar views you must be willing to acclimatize to their actions & body dialectal. Lastly, emotions & motivations are the self-assurance & competence to deal with individuals from other cultures. It’s easy for you to acclimate to the lifestyle of a different culture at ease.

Social Identity While Living Between Two Cultures

Cultural mashups occur when individuals experience two or more different cultures at the same time. For instance, when someone from another country moves to the Unites States they will experience cultural mashup. There ae numerous types of people who experience these cases, such as refugees, immigrants, or even international students. Living in the middle of two unique cultures actually alters their identity as they try to balance both cultures at the same time. In some cases, this ultimately leads to one of the cultures being entirely disposed.

Thus, not preserving that specific culture. Cultural mashups make it increasingly difficult for the individual to know exactly who they are. Acculturation is when both of these cultures become mixed. In my opinion Acculturation would be a proper solution to these issues because it allocates blending of cultures, which ultimately benefits both the minor and major culture of the location at hand.

For this paper I will rely on sources within the textbook for information as well as other scholarly sources found via the internet. Utilization of an array of sources will help me gain a more holistic view of the topic at hand. I will aim to provide a worldly account of these topics because such instances are not only found in the United States. Within the textbook, numerous accounts of personal stories of cultural mashup and identity are explained. I will use this information to pain an image of the numerous issues involved. I will also draw on personal information since I am directly affected by these issues at hand. There are certainly some who will oppose my position. There are many people who do not like the blending of culture. Some people expect their countries to only focus on their own personal cultures and neglect the cultures of others.

I plan to refute the opinions of these in opposition by proving information on the benefits of acculturation. While also explaining how countries like the United States are mixing pots that already promote the cultures of many other individuals. Although this is true, I feel there are ways to be even more acculturated. By doing so, many people will reap the benefits. I play to achieve an overall better understanding of these topics. Being that I am directly impacted by the mashup of cultures and issues of identity, I feel that learning more would certainly help. I also aim to show why acculturation would help fix many of these issues of identity in individuals who are experiencing culture mash-ups.
