Cuyahoga Community College Structure and Function of Pig Systems Lab Report
I need an explanation for this Biology question to help me study.
Last week we examined the diversity of the incredible Animal Kingdom. In addition to exploring this diversity we also went over the major characteristics shared by all animals; multicellularity, heterotrophic mode of feeding , embryonic development and movement. We also examined the specific characteristics used by biologists to classify and organize animals (taxonomy). Today we will delve further into one of these characteristics-cellular organization- as we take a look at the internal organ structure of a representative Chordate, the fetal pig.
To complete this weeks Lab Exercise :
1. We will begin by watching a You Tube video of a complete dissection of a fetal pig (link below). The video is well done and will give you a good idea of the actual dissection process (as if we were in the Biology 130 Lab), minus of course the smell of the chemical fixatives used to preserve the pig tissues!! I will frequently pause the video to make pertinent comments and observations.
2. Download (print), read and work your way through Exercise 6: The Structure Function of Mammalian SystemsFA2020 .pdf. You will likely need to rewatch the You tube video of the fetal pig dissection again on your own and refer to the listed websites, which include many photos of the dissection process, to obtain all of the information you will need to answer the questions posed in the lab.
3. Download, complete and submit the completed Skill Check Exercise 6 Fetal Pig FA 2020.pdf (doc). Make sure that you answer all of the questions posed-many are pulled directly from Exercise 6, and draw (and label) the organ systems carefully and completely. There is no DISCUSSION for this weeks lab BUT I would ask you to, in lieu of a discussion, to list and describe one internal anatomical difference( that you have observed by doing this lab) between the fetal pig and the human.
That is it. It is an interesting lab. Maybe now you can understand why pig organs have been used historically for human transplants ( arterial grafts, heart valves, etc) and why molecular biologists have, in recent years, bioengineered pigs that lack pig antigens. something to think about…
