Building effective communication skills and relationships within a single culture is often challenging. Bridging the gap between different cultures makes building communication skills and relationships even more difficult. I will discuss some of the challenges of cross-cultural communication and the pieces necessary to build effective working relationships.

Typically, some of the basic assumptions we make when communicating with people from our own culture must be questioned and modified when communicating with people of another culture. First on the list of items for review is verbal communication.

Parts of verbal communication, such as, tonality, tense, gender generalities and structure vary greatly from culture to culture. A majority of these differences are based on core values and perceptions in different cultures; therefore, such differences must be acknowledged if effective communication and relationships are to occur.

A principle rule of mutual respect is the basis for success in communication and relationships. Mutual respect should be based on the following criteria:

  • always allow for and assume differences, until similarity is proved
  • emphasize description, rather than definition or judgment
  • practice empathy
  • treat your interpretation as a unproved theory until further understanding proves certainty

Often, cultural differences are easily identified and therefore, easy to adapt to; but, others are significantly more difficult. An example of a cultural difference with easy adaptability could be the matter of personal space. Someone whose cultural background has defined their need for limited areas of personal space when working and communicating with others, as opposed to someone who feels the need for a required, yet undefined area of personal space.

The person who requires a certain sense of space may find himself/herself always backing up when working with the other person. The lack of personal space may be just as uncomfortable for one person as the lack of desired closeness is for the other. This personal space example demonstrates that some cultural differences are apparent and simple to accommodate.

Another contrast of cultural difference is demonstrated by a model of leadership consisting of one leader and many followers versus a culture based on extensive discussion and mutual decision making as a core value. It is difficult to comprehend working in a group where the participants are seldom asked for their input, but instead being led in the direction chosen by the leader.

Coming to terms with discord between core values is a complex struggle. Deeply embedded cultural norms are difficult to consciously recognize; once they are recognized, opposing norms are difficult to fully accept. An upbringing that stresses communication and equality is a core value that makes it extremely arduous to submit to someone based on his/her position as a leader, rather than on earned respect.

Mutual respect sounds like an admirable approach to different cultures, but it is difficult in practice. Often there are situations where direct, confrontational styles of dealing with issues are necessary to achieve the desired result, but conflict with a more polite, non-confrontational style by the opposition.

The non-confrontational culture would feel they were being impolite to disagree with the other side; the other side might realize that they were impolite by being too direct and confrontational. Cross-cultural communication and relationship-building pertains not only to people from different countries, but also to people from different regions of the same country.

Showing respect for traditions and values other than ones own is probably the single most important aspect in developing good cross-cultural communication and relationships. Practicing respect is relatively simple if people from different cultures both show each other equal respect; however, it is much more difficult to develop good cross-cultural relationships if one does not feel the respect given is being reciprocated. Learning to respect each others cultural values is an ongoing process in building successful cross-cultural communication and relationships professionally and personally.

In my organization, emails messages are largely used to communication inside and outside of the organization. Although, email is somewhat informal, it is the quickest and most effective method of sending and receiving messages and they can also be considered a formal method of communication, depending on the contents and whether or not there is any formal correspondence attached.

Email can involve one-to-one communication, but it also supports one-to-many transmissions in which the same message can be sent to lists of people (Reddick and King, 2001:24). Scheduling conferences and meetings, changing policies and procedures, keeping employees and staff apprised of any changes, and sending and receiving formal documents are just a few of the things email is used for in my organization. Email also works tremendously well when collaborating on a project. However, emails should only be used for quick messages or communication among staff members.

While the majority of the employees in my organization rely on email messages and the internet to communicate with co-workers and other staff members, face-to-face communication is still a popular method of communication in my workplace. Regardless of how effective email messages are, they cannot replace the immediacy and closeness of people communicating face-to-face. Eye contact facial expressions and the tone in one’s voice are important when communicating face-to-face with another individual and influence the way the message is interpreted.

However, with all this in mind, face-to-face is not the most effective way to communicate in my organization. Communicating face-to-face does pose some challenges for select employees when receiving information, especially in the form of a delegated task. Oftentimes, when a task is delegated to these select employees, it is not completed or completed in the wrong way. With face-to-face communication, the sender has to be sure they are clear and concise in the way they are conveying the message, as well as be fully aware of their body language and tone.

The receiver of information also has to have good interpretation skills in order to decipher what the message actually is. For effective communication, a sender transmits his or her message in a clear and organized form to maintain and promote the need and interest of the receivers. Receivers or listeners show interest only if the person communicating is loaded with confidence, gestures and softness. Apart from management professionals, are also required at all stages of life (WordPress, 2011).

The use of email also presents challenges when communicating effectively. One must consider that there will technical difficulties such as risking that the email might not reach its destination or the proper recipient, risking that the recipient might misinterpret the information on the email message and that ease of using emails may decrease the accuracy of the information. In addition, when messages do go out with incorrect information, it is difficult to immediately correct due to the rapid distribution of the email.

One might say that my organization clearly fits the description of very well, especially since we communicate mainly through virtual methods such as email messages and sometimes through telephone and voicemail messages. Perhaps making small adjustments like working in smaller teams or units to accomplish short term goals and specific projects might help achieve the long term goals quicker. In addition, tasks might be easier to delegate as well as follow. Virtual meetings such as teleconferences and video chats might be a useful addition o communicate effectively in such a large organization. Barriers to Effective Communication

Human communication lies in the fact that the dialogue neither enforces one’s opinion against the other’s one, nor does it add one’s opinion to the other’s one as in some mathematical addition. The dialogue changes both of them. A successful dialogue is of such character that it is impossible to fall again into the disagreement that caused it.

It is only community, which is so common that it is no longer my or your view but the way how we mutually interpreted the world, what enables moral and social solidarity. What is right and what is considered to be correct, that in its substance needs society, which comes into being by means of mutual human understanding. The mutual view is in reality being built all the time in mutual dialogue and then it again falls into the silence of understanding and common place.

Or this reason, it is considered justified the assertion that all non-verbal forms of understanding aim back to the understanding that spreads through speech and dialogue. These are barriers to understanding, which are given by the character of virtual study environment which can be overcome, for example by technical perfection, only when this environment comes closer to reality. There are certain limits in this dialogue, certain barriers to understanding, which have extra-causal basis. Let us list at least the most marked ones:

  1. Cultural and national differences;
  2. Overall life temperament;
  3. Personal disposition and character;
  4. Type of thinking, paradigm of rationality;
  5. Professional difference;
  6. Age difference;
  7. Experiential and knowledge difference;
  8. Language barrier.

Virtual study environment provides structured contents of the subject of study in terms of syllabus and study materials as well as sets of questions, tasks and tests and self- tests, which are composed mainly on the basis of utterance logic and in accord with didactic principles of increasing demands and clarity (there are used not only pictures, but also schemes, visualizations, audio tools, etc.). Yip (1995) describes how the potential for a firm to pursue a global strategy is governed by industry globalization drivers. Yip (1995) groups the drivers into four categories, market drivers, cost drivers, government drivers and competitive drivers. IKEA operates in the retail industry, and anlaysing the globalization drivers for the industry, focusing particularly on the furniture retail industry, can help us to gain a deeper understanding of IKEAs international strategy. The focus shall be on IKEAs entry into the Japanese retail market.

Japan has the second biggest global retail market behind the US and also the second largest furniture retail market worth approximately 14 Billion (JETRO, 2007). Rugman & Hodgetts (2003) explain how Japan has attracted a lot of foreign investment as it has developed globally into a major industrial power and maintained sustained economic growth. However Rugman & Hodgetts (2003) then proceed to emphasise how many foreign retailers have failed after entering the Japanese market like Carrefour and Boots. Market globalization drivers are traditionally weak for the retail industry.

Yip (1995) describes how factors such as common customer needs across different countries contribute to market globalization drivers. However in the retail industry, and particularly in Japan, Jonsson (2007) explains how Japanese customers are “very quality-orientated” (Jonsson, 2007, p. 29) and emphasises that they often associate low price with poor quality. In a survey carried out by the Japanese External trade Organization (JETRO) 73% of Japanese consumers were highly concerned with quality (JETRO, 2009).

Despite the development of transport services and the decrease in cargo costs (Bartlett et al., 2008) cost globalization drivers for the furniture retail industry, which involves the transport of bulky products, still remain weaker than the drivers for other more easily transported retail products. Government organisations such as JETRO and the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) have improved Japans trade relations, and many of its import quotas and tariffs have been removed in recent years (Rugman & Hodgetts, 2003). These are examples of government globalization drivers for the retail industry, however Rugman & Hodgetts (2003) also explain how there are still many non-tariff barriers in place.

They explain how Japan implemented the ‘Large Retail Store Law’ in 1973, which limited the size of retail stores of foreign firms who also required approval from local competitors. Despite the law being slackened in recent years it still remains a barrier for MNEs entering the Japanese retail market. IKEA’s International Strategy Despite the furniture retail industry experiencing relatively low globalization drivers (Yip, 1995), IKEA has managed to expand globally into the largest furniture retailer in the world (Betts, 2006).

Bartlett et al. (2008) describe how various companies can encourage the global evolution of a particular industry by finding ways around the various barriers to globalization. IKEA opened its first retail store in 1951 in Almhult, Sweden and was an immediate success (Bartlett et al. , 2008). However it wasn’t until 1953 that IKEA revolutionised furniture retailing through its “knockdown” concept, which would ultimately be its platform to global success. IKEA “managed to redesign the entire furniture industry” (Arvidsson, 1997, p.

85) through its flat packed product that customers transport home and assemble themselves. IKEA therefore managed to avoid two of the most expensive activities of traditional furniture retailers, assembly and home delivery (Bartlett et al. , 2008). Bartlett et al. (2008) describe how IKEA created a completely new business model which allowed them to transport its products globally more cost-effectively than competing retailers, and one that transformed its value chain. The value chain approach identifies primary and secondary activities in the firm.

Primary activities include inbound and outbound logistics, operations, marketing and after-sale functions. Secondary activities, on the other hand, are identified as support processes to primary activities (Bartlett et al. , 2008). Porter (1985) proposed that firms could gain competitive advantage over its competitors by adding as much customer value in each of the primary activities by performing them at lower cost or in a unique way. Rugman (2000) describes how by providing flat-packed products that consumers transport and assemble themselves integrates the customer in the value chain process (see figure 5).

This obviously saves on transportation and assembly costs, but also means the customers add value to the chain rather than consume it by providing labour and transportation. This added value is visible to the customer in the end product through IKEAs low prices (Arvidsson, 1997). This elimination of costs and added value throughout the value chain allows IKEA to gain competitive advantage by following a cost leadership strategy (Porter, 1985). Finne & Sivonen (2009) explain how particularly in innovative speciality retailiers, such as IKEA, product development is controlled by the retailers but manufacturing is outsourced.

Rugman & Hodgetts (2003) back this up and explain how IKEA have kept tight control over product design and development, but have outsourced manufacturing to subcontracted key suppliers who manufacture standardised components for IKEA. Bartlett et al. (2008) explain how one of IKEA key principals is not to invest in expensive manufacturing facilities and own its production operations, but to “develop close ties by supporting its suppliers in a long-term relationship” (Bartlett et al. , 2008, p. 745). IKEA flourished during its first decade of operations and the company’s sales doubled between 1953 and 1955 (Bartlett et al. , 2009).

Krampard opened a second store in 1965 in Stockholm and it was clear that IKEA was well established in its domestic market but had no regular export activities. This reflects the first stage of the establishment link of the Uppsala model. In the early 1970s IKEA began its expansion abroad to Switzerland and Germany. It first entered the German market in 1974, through a contractual arrangement (Bartlett et al. 2008) but then increased its resource commitment as its knowledge of the market expanded and opened a store on the outskirts of Munich through a subsidiary which was an incorporated German company called IKEA GmbH (Bartlett et al., 2008).

This shares some similarities with progression onto the second and third stages of the Uppsala model. Despite various early obstacles in the German market it soon became IKEAs largest market (Bartlett et al. , 2008), and as the uncertainty of the market decreased IKEA increased its resource commitment by opening ten more stores throughout Germany by 1980 (Rugman ; Hodgetts, 2003). This gradual increase of input of resources as knowledge on the foreign market develops is characteristic of the Uppsala model presented by Johanson ; Wiedersheim-Paul/Vahlne (1975/1977).

In addition the first four global expansions by IKEA were to Norway, Denmark, Switzerland and Germany (Bartlett et al. , 2008). Despite the resource commitment being larger than expected in the Uppsala model, it follows the thought that firms will enter markets of low psychic distance, where consumer trends are likely to be similar. However in 1974 IKEA strayed from the process of internationalization proposed in the Uppsala model, and expanded into the largely unknown market of Japan via a franchising deal (Wijers-Hasegawa, 2006).

IKEA quickly invested a large amount of resources into a market of high psychic distance from the European countries IKEA was operating in at that time (Hall, 1973). Straying from the Uppsala model of internationalization seemed to cost IKEA dearly as Betts (2006) describes the attempt to enter the Japanese market in 1974 was nothing short of a disaster. And in Wijers-Hasegawa’s (2006) article the CEO of IKEA Japan KK admitted the “company was not ready for the demanding Japanese market”. IKEA ultimately withdrew from the Japanese market in 1986.

Despite this setback, IKEA remained focused on global expansion and Rugman & Hodgetts (2003) explain how IKEA entered the US market in 1985, the UK in 1987 and entered the Chinese market in 1998. The first entry to Japan had been a harsh learning process for IKEA, but with an increasing knowledge bank and international experience, it was able to enter markets quicker than before via foreign direct investments involving large resource commitments. In terms of analysing IKEAs strategic orientation it can be positioned in the I-R framework proposed by Bartlett & Ghoshal (1989).

Rugman (2000) proposes that traditional retailers should operate a multi-domestic strategy, whereby pressures such as differences in cultures and consumer tastes require a more locally responsive strategy. This ties in with Yip’s (1995) weak market globalization drivers for the retail industry. Being a relatively new entrant to the Japanese furniture retail market, coupled with the fact that it is still a private company, means that financial reports on IKEAs performance in the Japanese market are hard to come by.

IKEAs sales in the Asian market contribute under 6% of its total global sales however. The majority of IKEAs competition in the furniture retail industry comes from domestic companies. Competitors such as Nafco Co. Ltd. And Nitori Co. Ltd both have over 700,000m? of sales floor space throughout Japan. Compared to IKEA holding just 200,000m? (IKEA. com). The majority of these domestic competitors focus on high quality products, and expensive prices.

Finne ; Sivonen (2009) state how the majority of other international competition may come from exporting companies. Poggenpohl is a German company that manufacture high-end kitchen and furnishings. Poggenpohl has a 75% export ratio (JETRO, 2007) and has been exporting to Japan for 25 years, and has a strong established base. Compared to IKEAs cost leadership strategy, Poggenpohl could be seen to use a differentiation strategy as it is widely renowned for its high-quality, expensive designs (JETRO, 2007).

Despite expanding globally mainly via exporting, Poggenpohl has recognised the demand for quality products in Japanese market, and has opened its first Asian showroom in Tokyo in 2009. (JETRO, 2007) IKEA has undoubtedly experienced global success through its international strategy. Over 90% of IKEAs sales come from markets other than its domestic market, more than any other speciality retailer (Finne ; Sivonen, 2009) and it has grown to be the worlds largest furniture retailer.

However considering its current globally integrated strategy and lack of local responsiveness, it has still yet to prove it can survive in the most demanding consumer market, Japan. The experiential learning it will have gained during its twelve years in the Japanese market should have prepared IKEA for its re-entry in 2006. However it seems as though IKEA on the whole is still pursuing with its standardised globalized approach that saw it fail in such an environment before. Conclusions and Recommendations

After considering the work of Yip (1995) on the globalization drivers for different industries it became apparent that drivers for the furniture retail industry appeared weak and there was more evidence of localization drivers. However through the introduction of the “knockdown” concept in 1953 along with the transformation of its value chain, IKEA were able to overcome many of the barriers to globalization that traditional furniture retailers were experiencing (Bartlett et al. , 2008).

Using the Uppsala model of internationalisation, the global expansion process of IKEA into the worlds largest furniture retailer has been analysed. Despite not fitting the theoretical model exactly, many of the key themes and concepts were apparent in IKEAs early expansion. Also the model made some contribution in evaluating IKEAs failure to capture the Japanese market on its first entrance in 1974. Using the I-R framework proposed by Bartlett ; Ghoshal (1989) IKEA was found to be orientated towards a global strategy.

IKEA seemed to be experiencing few pressures for local responsiveness, but aiming for maximum global integration of its standardised products to further reduce costs (Rugman, 2000). Twenty-years after exiting the Japanese market, IKEA decided to re-enter in 2006 via a major Greenfield investment and now currently owns four other stores. One would suspect it is still early days to make a judgement on IKEAs performance to date, however some recommendations can be presented to attempt to ensure IKEAs re-entry is sustainable.

Research would suggest that, despite there being some evidence of global convergence of consumers tastes (Levitt, 1983), customer attitudes in Japan are still largely different to that of the Western world (JETRO, 2009). Rugman ; Hodgetts (2003) emphasise that successfully foreign owned MNCs appreciate that products must be tailored to suit the Japanese market. It is recommended that IKEA should slightly re-engineer certain products to better suit the Japanese small, uncluttered, minimalist space approach (Betts, 2006).

This could be done by responding more openly to local responsiveness, and slide closer over to a transnational strategy in the I-R matrix. IKEA could also learn from cases such as Toys “R” Us who faced the same problem in transferring their global standardised business model to the Japanese market. Toys “R” Us formed a strategic alliance with Den Fujita, who applied his local cultural knowledge and powerful opinion leader position to shape and streamline the Toys “R” Us strategy to best fit the Japanese market.

Effective communication helps better to understand a person or situation, enables us to resolve differences, build trust and respect. As simple as communication seems, much of what we try to communicate and others try to communicate to us, gets misunderstood which can cause conflict and frustration in personal and professional relationships.

By learning effective communication skills, you can connect better with your spouse, kids, friends, and co-workers. In this assignment I will write about the different types of interpersonal interaction: one to one and group interaction, which is also used in profession environments. I will compare one to one communication with Argyle’s theory, and I will also compare group communication with Tuckman’s theory.

What is effective communication?

We have to send, receive, and process huge numbers of messages every day. But effective communication is about more than just exchanging information. Effective communication requires you to also understand the emotion behind the information. It can improve relationships at home, work, and in social situations by deepening your connections to others and improving teamwork, decision-making, caring, and problem solving. It enables you to communicate even negative or difficult messages without creating conflict or destroying trust.

What is one to one to one communication? One-to-one means one person communicating with another person with no other eople joining in. If you walk into a one-to-one job interview, the interviewer may say ‘Good afternoon, my name is … Please sit down’ this make you feel less nervous so you feel more confident. But if you walked in and someone immediately said, ‘Sit down. Why do you want this job’, you would sit down and start to answer questions instantly, so would be very nervous and likely to mess up. It is the same in any conversation; it is important to create the right feeling by being friendly and showing interest in and respect for the other person. The conversation needs a start, e. g. Hello, How are you today? ’ middle, when you both talk about what you need to, and an ending, e. g. ‘Bye, See you later. ’ One to one conversation allows extra time for people to discuss any feedback they may have and also enables them to ask necessary questions.

What is Group Communication?

Group communication is communication which is carried out with at least 3 members in the group or more. This group can either be a professional group, social group or and educational group. The members of the group will have a common interest or goal, which is the reason they are bought together.

Group communication is harder because it only works properly if everyone is involved. In most groups there are people who speak a lot and others who speak a little or do not speak at all. Maybe this is because they feel uncomfortable speaking in front of a group of people or they are just not interested in the topic of conversation. Groups work best if there is a team leader who encourages everyone to have a say in turn, rather than everyone trying to speak at once. The use of space is important when having a group conversation, preferably sitting in a circle. This allows everyone to see each other and understand the message effectively.

Advantages of one to one communication:

Having a one to one conversation will help you gain quick feedback, for example if you emailed someone they may no check there email for days and you would not get the quick reply that you needed. You will also be able to read the other persons facial expression and body language, this will help you understand how the person is feeling and if you can trust what they are saying to you. For example if you someone texts you a ‘? when they are angry just to be sarcastic you may not realise and you may think that the person is actually happy. Also sometimes people feel shy and nervous amongst a group of people, and they may not be able to get there point across, because they are worried about what the other people may think about them, so if they have a conversation with one person they may feel more comfortable and they can get there point heard easily.

Advantages of group communication: In a group conversation, you will be able to get a vast number of ideas.

You will also be able to hear a number of people points of views that may or may not fit in with yours; you will always learn new things. This will expand your knowledge in the particular topic which is being discussed. You will be less narrow minded and more open to other people ways of seeing things. When having a one on one conversation, the other person may share the same ideas with you, so you will not learn much new things but in a group conversation there is always someone who either disagrees with you or knows something that you don’t.

Disadvantages of one to one communication:

You will not be able to think your answer through when you are having a one on one conversation because the person who you are having the conversation with will be expecting you to give them a reply as soon as they finish talking. So you won’t be able to deeply think about the situation and give a good answer. Sometimes in a one to one conversation you may run out of things to say so it will make the atmosphere very awkward and agitating. Sometimes if the right atmosphere isn’t created in the conversation the whole conversation will just be a waste of time.

Disadvantages of group communication:

In group conversations it is harder to start the conversation and keep it going, this is why there always needs to be some sort of a group leader. Sometimes the shy people in the group are threatened, tend to stay quiet and they don’t get a chance to get there point across. This is because of the much louder members of the group, who dominate the conversation. This is why the leader needs to make sure they all have a chance to talk. This is one of the main disadvantages in a group conversation. Also coming to a conclusion will take much longer then it would in a one to one conversation.

Argyles theory:

Michael Argyle was a social psychologist who researched and developed theories about human communication and interpersonal interaction. He focused on verbal and non-verbal communication. He carried out experiments to test and develop his theories and ideas Argyle’s ‘communication cycle’ theory explains how communication occurs between people in one-to-one conversations. Argyle claimed that one tot one communication is essentially a two-way process that involves people sending, receiving and responding to each other’s verbal messages.

One to one conversation allows extra time for people to discuss any feedback they may have and also enables them to ask necessary questions. The use of space is important when having a group conversation, preferably sitting in a circle. This allows everyone to see each other and understand the message effectively. . The stages in his communication cycle are:

1. An idea occurs – You have an idea that you want to communicate. This is decided on choosing the right words. You may want to ask yourself what will the other person want from the message and what impact the message may have.

2. Message coded – You think about how you’re going to say it. You put your thought into a language or in any other form of communication.

3. Message sent – You speak to whoever you need to. When the message is being sent they may be distractions. It is best to avoid interruptions and background noise.

4. Message received – The person who you spoke to has to sense your message. When receiving the message the other person should check for main points to test their understanding. This could be main points, facts and phrases.

5. Message decoded – The person has to interpret what you said.

He will make assumptions about what you said and how you said it (body language and facial expressions) 6. Message understood- If the cycle went well then your message will be understood. If the cycle starts off well then the last stage will make it easier for people to understand your message. The cycle shows how people’s minds work while in a one to one conversation. Argyle shows us what goes on the persons mind and how the person carries out the action. This is an example of argyles cycle:

1. An idea occurs – New car

2. Message coded – I want to buy a new car

3. Message sent – ‘I really want to buy a new car’

4. Message received – The other person nods his head

5. Message decoded – *not sure if this person really needs a new car or if he just wants one*

6. Message understood – ‘Do you need a new car or do you just want a new car?’

In this example the message was not fully understood, but this is common because it is hard to understand the message the first time because of the person’s body language and facial expressions. Tuckman’s theory: Bruce Tuckman’s theory suggests that groups must go through these stages to be effective there are four stages:

1. Forming – involves group members who have met for the first time to share some information then coming together and asking basic questions about the purpose and aims of the group. In this first stage of group development, members tend to feel quite nervous. A leader usually emerges in this early stage.

2. Storming- this is when there is some conflict, tension and struggle within the group. Members of the group may argue over the purpose of the group. In this stage, power and control are the main issues. Eventually, the purpose of the group and the roles within it become clear. At this stage tolerance, patience and co-operation is needed or else the team will fail.

3. Norming- the group’s identity develops. Group agrees on values. The group arrives at one goal and agrees a shared plan to achieve it. The group members tend to work together to resolve conflicts, consciously or unconsciously.

4. Performing- when the group have established common expectations and values. They then finally get down to working effectively. Members tend to focus more on the overall goal rather than on relationships between themselves.

Relationships have, by this stage, become more comfortable and are based on trust and mutual support. In conclusion, effective communication is very important as it enables people to exchange ideas and information. In addition it facilitates people to build relationships and develop their self-esteem. Communication allows checking a person understanding with regards to active listening. What is Communication? Communication is the process of transmitting and receiving of information through verbal or nonverbal behavior. At the center of any definition of communication must be the intention of conveying a message, even if the message is abstract (e. g. modern poetry).

Why We Communicate The purpose of any given communication may be: To initiate some action To impart information, ideas, attitudes, beliefs or feelings To establish, acknowledge or maintain links or relations with other people. How We Communicate Effective communication is a two-way process, perhaps best expressed as a cycle. Signals or ? messages‘ are ? sent‘ by the communicator and ? received‘ by the other party. He ? sends‘ back some form of confirmation that the ? message‘ has been received and understood: this is called ? feedback‘. Messages should ideally be reviewed and put into some working order in the brain before mouth, body or machinery are used to articulate and present the idea for someone else‘s benefit. Encoding the message At this stage, the sender puts his message into words, gestures and expressions in the form that both sender and receiver understand.

We have to bear in mind however, that a symbol that we use and understand may be ambiguous (have more than one possible meaning) or mean something different to a person of different age, nationality, experience or beliefs. Just because we understand what we mean, it does not necessarily mean that someone else will. Relaying the message Once the idea has been encoded as a message, the sender needs to choose how to ? transmit‘, or get it across to the receiver. The particular route or path, via which the message is sent, connecting the sender and receiver, is called the channel of communication. (e. g. notice board, newspaper column, online bulletin board). The tool which is used to communicate is called the medium which often takes the form of: i. Visual communication – e. g. gesture, chart, picture or screen display ii. Written communication – e. g. a letter, memorandum, note, report or list; or iii. Oral communication which includes both face-to-face and remote communication – e. g. : by telephone or television. 4|Page Choice of medium The choice of medium will depend on such factors as: the Time, depending on its urgency. the Complexity, which medium will enable it to be most easily understood. he Distance, the message is required to travel and in what condition it must arrive. the need for a written record, e. g. for legal documents. the need for interaction, immediate exchange or instant feedback. the need for confidentiality or conversely, the spreading of information widely and quickly. Sensitivity to the effect of the message on the recipient: the need for personal involvement, persuasive power or impersonality. Cost, for the best possible result at the least possible expense. Decoding the message The first step in communication from the receiver‘s point of view is the ? ecoding‘ of the message i. e understanding what it says. The receiver must: grasp the meaning of the words or symbols used by the sender interpret the message as a whole. What it says is not necessarily what it means. Reading between the lines or inferring may be necessary to establish the underlying meaning of the message Giving feedback Feedback is the reaction of the receiver which indicates to the sender that the message has (or has not) been successfully received, understood and interpreted. There are 2 types of feedback – negative & positive.

Feedback is vital to success in communication because there are so many potential barriers and breakdowns to guard against Positive feedback i. ii. iii. No action, or wrong action taken No written response at all or written request for more information, repetition etc. Silence, gesture, blank look, shrug. 5|Page Types of communication Intrapersonal communication: Communication with oneself eg. f you want to remind yourself to do something, Interpersonal communication: Communication between two individuals, or between a number of individuals on a personal level: a. individual to individual. b. individual to group – address the group as a whole. c. group to individual – transmit message on behalf of an organization/group etc. The medium of interpersonal communication may be written, oral, visual, non-verbal or may mix of them, through channels such as face-to-face discussion, telephone or postal systems, notice boards and so on.

Impersonal communication/Mass communication: ? mass‘ communication, in which the message is directed to large, diffuse audience, with no direct contact between source and receiver. Like interpersonal communication, it can be oral, visual or non-verbal, using written, pictorial, or simulated interpersonal messages. eg. someone ? talking to‘ the audience in a TV or radio advertisement. Public communication: Takes place when the organization communicates with a number of receivers. For example: staff newsletter, reports, meetings etc.

Potential Problems In Communication Two technical terms used to describe problems or breakdowns, which occur in communication, are distortion and noise. (a) Distortion Distortion refers to the way in which the meaning of a communication is lost in ? handling‘ i. e during the encoding and decoding stages of communication. (b) Noise Noise refers to distractions and interference in the environment in which communication takes place, obstructing the process of communication by affecting the accuracy, clarity or even the arrival of the message. a. Physical noise, eg. ther people talking, passing traffic. b. Technical noise, eg. bad handwriting, crackle on a telephone line. c. Social noise, eg. interference created by differences in personality/culture or outlook of the sender and recipient. 6|Page d. Psychological noise, eg. excessive emotion (anger, fear), prejudice or nervousness can also interfere with effective transmission of a message. The problem of noise can be reduced by redundancy: using more than one channel of communication so that if a message fails to get through one channel, it may succeed by another.

Personal differences There are many factors in an individual‘s personality, mentality, experience and environment which can cause distortion or noise in the communication process. For example: racial, ethnic or regional origins religious beliefs and traditions social class and socio-economic education and training age sex occupation personality traits and types- a wide range of characteristics which shape attitudes and behaviour: introvert/ extrovert, stable/neurotic, active/passive etc. ntelligence- in terms of mental ability and understanding, linguistic or numerical ability Perception Perception is the process by which the data gathered by the senses is selected, sorted, organized and interpreted by the brain in order to form meaningful and coherent messages or information. Selective perception The sub-conscious mind ? decides‘ which stimuli/information are (subjectively) relevant and which are irrelevant and can be safely ignored. When we focus on selected stimuli, we say we give them our attention. This is important for the communicator: 1. s listener and reader, because of the need to minimize potential distractions and to be aware that some parts of a message may be ignored thus, distorting the overall meaning. 2. as creator and sender, because the need to attract and hold the recipient‘s attention to the key points and meaning of the message. 7|Page NON-

VERBAL COMMUNICATION

What is non-verbal communication? Non-verbal communication is basically anything that conveys a message without using words or symbols. It may be linked to words (eg. a tone of voice), or it may be independent of any verbal message.

Movement is highly communicative. Think what you can convey through, for example, frowning or smiling, nodding, scratching your head, putting your head in your hands or slamming a door. There are two broad categories of non-verbal communications: First, Non-verbal communication linked to verbal communication, which adds meaning over and above what the speaker is saying in the words themselves ? between the lines‘ of a message. Words Really, I‘m fine. Other factors Quivering lips, pale face, curled up in chair, arms folded around body. Sarcastic smile, patronising tone.

Meaning I‘m upset, or ill, and either trying to be brave or not wanting your help. You and I both know I‘m right. Correct me if I‘m wrong. Second, Non-verbal communication independent of any verbal message, so that meaning is conveyed by non-verbal cues. If you forget a friend‘s birthday, for example, this in itself may be enough to communicate that you don‘t care about them any more, or that you are angry with them for some reason. Channels/Types of Non-verbal Communication Because so much of human interaction is non-verbal, this system includes many kinds of communication.

There are 9 forms of non-verbal behaviour and each is used to establish personal identity, relational messages and express personal identity and cultural values. i. Kinesics Kinesics refer to body position and body motions including facial expressions. Our bodies communicate a great deal about how we see ourselves. For instance, someone who walks briskly conveys determination; someone who moves without purpose (or ? can never sit still‘) signals nervousness, impatience or distractions. Our faces also communicate messages; we can indicate happiness (smiles), doubt (raised eyebrows) or anger (stares).

How we position ourselves relative to others also expresses our feelings toward them – friends often sit together while competitors typically maintain distance. 8|Page ii. Haptics Haptics refer to physical touch. Touching or contact communicates closeness as well as power and status. People with high status touch others and invade others‘ spaces more than those with low status. Between the two genders, women tend to engage in touch while men more typically rely on touch to assert power and control. iii. Physical Appearance High value is often placed on physical appearance.

People form initial evaluations based on individual‘s appearance. We first notice physical qualities such as gender, skin colour and features. Then we form judgements of how attractive others are and make inferences about their personalities. For example, plump, rounded bodies are often associated with laziness and weakness while thin, angular physiques are thought to reflect youthful, stubborn personalities. Though these associations have no factual basis, they can affect decisions about hiring, placement and promotion. iv.

Artifacts Artifacts are personal objects we use to announce our identities and personalize our environments. We craft our image by how we dress and what objects we carry and use. For instance, doctors wear white and drape stethoscopes around their necks while the military requires uniforms with stripes and medals to signify rank and accomplishments. Artifacts communicate important relational meaning – we use them to perform our identities and express how we perceive and feel about others. v. Proxemics Proxemics refer to space and how we use it. Space reflects intimacy – e. . when we are angry with someone, we tend to move away from him and resent it if he approaches us. Space also announces status with greater space being assumed by those with higher status. How people arrange space reflects how close they are and whether they want interaction. E. g. Those who enjoy interaction arrange furniture to invite conversation and eye contact. For less interaction, chairs may be far apart and face the television instead of each other. vi. Environmental factors Environmental factors are elements of settings that affect how we feel and act.

We respond to architecture, colours, temperature, sounds, smells and lighting. e. g. dimly-lit room can enhance romantic feelings while dark rooms can be depressing. Rooms with comfortable chairs invite relaxation while stiff chairs prompt formality. Thus, environmental factors influence not only patterns of interaction but also feelings and moods. 9|Page vii. Chronemics Chronemics refer to how we perceive and use time to define identities and interaction. E. g. cultural rule stipulates important people with high status can keep others waiting. It‘s standard practice to wait to see a doctor even if you have an appointment.

Chronemics also express cultural attitudes toward time. In western societies, for example, time is valuable so, speed is highly valued but Malaysian have more relaxed attitudes toward time and punctuality. viii. Paralanguage Paralanguage refers to vocal sounds such as murmurs and gasps and vocal qualities such as volume, rhythm, pitch and intonation. These vocal cues act as signals for others to interpret what we say as a joke, threat, statement, question etc. Voices can also be used to communicate feelings eg whispering indicates secrecy and intimacy while shouting conveys anger. x. Silence Silence can communicate powerful messages. It can communicate different meanings. For instance, it can signal awkwardness – we deliberately ignore others when we‘re angry with them.

VERBAL COMMUNICATION

What is verbal communication? Verbal communication is anything that conveys a message using words or symbols. It is the spoken, oral, and unwritten way of communicating. It makes use of words, vocabulary, numbers and symbols and is organized in sentences. Therefore, speaking is a form of verbal communication. Why is good verbal communication so important?

In the business world, verbal communication is very important because you are dealing with a variety of people throughout the day. In some cases you may deal with people who have different culture, ages and with different levels of experience. Now take for example the way you converse with a family member or friend around your same age, you interact with them with a lot of confidence, there is without doubt that verbal communication is expressed with much ease, and perhaps you may speak differently from the way you speak with a person related to business. 10 | P a g e

Imagine if you expressed yourself the same way with a customer who has different culture, is much older than you and have many years of experience in his field. Most likely your thoughts will be difficult to express. Thus it is necessary to have proper skill when using verbal communication while dealing with different people. How to acquire better verbal communication First of all you need to be aware of the fact that you must be flexible with people depending on the circumstances. Let us say you are presenting a speech in front of an audience at work, and you express your thoughts using business vocabulary.

Now what if your audience where to be unfamiliar with the terms you are using, it is without question you will notice the audience lose focused attention to what you are saying , so then you must be flexible and change the way you are expressing your thoughts by using words that are more comprehendible to the audience. You could also build skills by attending a course related to business communication. When you are attending the class, you will then be forced to communicate in a more organized way.

Try to use the opportunity to overcome the fear of talking to a big crowd and a stranger while you are in class. Besides attending a class that teaches business communication, you may also want to consider working in a job-field that involves working with strangers, such job can be a form of practice to gain confidence in yourself and help reduce shyness and intimidation. Another form of practice can be talking to older relatives and friends, about a topic that involves expressing emotions and strong opinions or a discussion that may concern experiences.

Such communication helps you to accumulate skills to express yourself in a more formal and proper manner. When practicing with your relatives or friends it is important for you to back up your opinions or statements with facts. In order to have references about your subject it is suggested to read and study about it. Like for example, if you where to discuss the issue that we are all facing today such as the world’s economy for instance, then you may obtain the facts from the news paper, the news, Internet, and you can even get it from books. 1 | P a g e

WRITTEN COMMUNICATION

Advantages The advantages of written messages include the following: They provide a permanent record of transaction or agreement for confirmation and recollection of details. Evidence may also be necessary for legal purposes. They provide supporting confirmation and clarification of verbal messages, again in case evidence should be needed, but also an aid of memory. They are easily duplicated and sent out to numerous recipients: this ensures that everyone receives the same message.

It also enables office personnel to write one message (to adapt or copy) instead of making numerous phone calls. They are capable of relaying complex ideas, aided by suitable layout and the permanence of the record, which allows the recipient to pore over it at length if necessary. They can be stored and later retrieved for reference and analysis as required. They are perceived as impersonal, and can be used in situations where unusual formality or ? distance‘ need to be established within an otherwise personal relationship (for example, formal disciplinary proceedings). Disadvantages Time.

A written message can be take time to produce, and to send, especially if it has to go by post and if expensive technology is beyond the user‘s reach. Because of the time factor, swift ? interactive‘ exchanges of opinion, attitude and so on are impossible. Inflexibility. Once sent, the message cannot immediately be altered or amended, even if circumstances change or errors are discovered. Impersonality. Written communication also tends to more across as formal and impersonal, so in situations requiring greater sensitivity or persuasion, the personal presence or voice of the sender may be more effective.

Accessibility. People‘s ability to read and interpret written messages will vary according to background, education, knowledge of the topic and so on. Eg. If the vocabulary is difficult, the reader may not understand the message. Distance. Non-verbal signals (eg. gesture, facial expression) are not available to help in interpreting the message – the receiver is left with only the words, presentation and written style. Instant feedback is also not available which means errors in interpretation may not be corrected immediately. 12 | P a g e

DEVELOPMENT OF SELF

Introduction What constitutes the “self” has been pondered by philosophers, poets, artists, and others for millennia. More recently, psychologists have sought to define and research a range of self constructs. “Self” in the 20th Century Previous to the 20th century, social institutions, including schooling and psychology (which barely existed) did not emphasize the development of positive beliefs about self. There was greater emphasis, for example, on developing relationship to divinities and organized systems of government.

With the ousting of religion as the dominant organizational culture in Western society, and the rise of capitalism with its emphasis, particularly in North America, on expression and valuing of personal freedom, a ‘cult of the self’ has blossomed. Indeed, self-constructs seem to be positively associated with other desirable qualities, such as better quality of life, higher academic performance, and so on, but there is a debate about whether improving self-esteem, self-concept, etc. causes improved performance, or vice-versa. What’s more, there is evidence that high self-esteem when combined with prejudice can lead to increased aggression.

It is unclear whether self-concepts are formed top-down (specific beliefs flow from general beliefs) or bottom-up (general beliefs flow from specific beliefs). Definitions Of Self-Constructs (a) Self-esteem: What is Self-Esteem? It‘s the way you feel about yourself. It comes from within. Self-esteem is how we feel about ourselves. It is our thoughts and feelings about ourselves. For example: I am good looking. I feel good about myself. I am kind. I am competent. The level of our self-esteem determines how we operate in life – how we interact with others, spouse, children, friends, and strangers.

It determines our goals and what we strive for, our achievements, and our satisfaction and happiness in life. The importance of self-esteem can be seen when we look at the relationship between healthy self-esteem and other psychological traits. Self-esteem and personality are closely related. It is interesting how we define self-esteem. We define it by declaring feelings. We talk about how we feel. High self-esteem is associated with positive feelings and low self-esteem with negative feelings. Healthy self-esteem is related with: ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? It occurs in every facet of life. It is the force behind most success and failure, the force behind peak performance, successful achievement, living your dream – living your world! Self-esteem is the feeling of being happy with your character and abilities. It is manifested in a wonderful feeling of inner balance, grounded on self acceptance and a healthy, comforting self-respect towards you. This is entirely different from self-confidence which is deeply rooted in what you believe you can achieve.

There are several cases of self-confidence acts without Self-esteem. Positive Self-esteem is knowing who we are and living in harmony with ourselves without needing to have the approval of others. Really, other people’s opinion about yourself does not have to be your reality. The definition of positive Self-esteem is that of a life of happiness, of sound mind, of health. When we are happy about ourselves, not caring about what people say about us, we live a happier life, a healthier one, a more successful one – Best of all, we live in peak performance. Happier lifestyle comes from within, it enables happy and relaxed cells, and it controls stress.

Happy cells lead to a prolonged life expectancy which means extended period to lead a even 15 | P a g e happier life! What a great attribute if you can only come to terms with who you are, regardless of whatever any person says about you. Remember, life’s too short to live other people’s opinion and reflections. Live yours! It will take courage though, but it’s worth living. It’s the best. (b) Self-confidence: What is self-confidence? Most of us now what self-confidence means: we usually define it in relation to what we want to do, but feel too anxious, nervous or worried about! In the end, we will not do it. For one person, self-confidence might be about speaking in public. For another, it might be about being confident in social situations.

Whatever the situation that reveals our lack of confidence, the definition of confidence that is implicit here is always something about being self-assured, showing self-reliance, or not being anxious or nervous. Another common definition of self-confidence centres on being assertive, on getting what you want. This is about , about having the presence, the personal power, if you like, to regard yourself as equal to others and to behave in a way that reflect this. Self-confidence is essentially an attitude which allows us to have a positive and realistic perception of ourselves and our abilities. It is characterised by personal ttributes such as assertiveness, optimism, enthusiasm, affection, pride, independence, trust, the ability to handle criticism and emotional maturity. Confidence is learnt; it is not inherited. If you lack confidence, it probably means that, as a child, you were criticised, undermined, or suffered an inexplicable tragic loss, for which you either blamed yourself or were blamed by others. A lack of confidence isn’t necessarily permanent but it can be if it isn’t addressed. Our religion, the influence of the culture which formed our perspectives, our gender, social class and our parents, in particular, are all factors which influence and contribute to our level of confidence and esteem. Confident people have deep faith in their future and can accurately assess their capabilities.

They also have a general sense of control in their lives and believe that, within reason, they will be able to do what they desire, plan and expect, no matter what the foreseeable obstacle. But this faith is guided by more realistic expectations so that, even when some of their goals are not met, those with confidence continue to be positive, to believe in themselves and to accept their current limitations with renewed energy. However, having high self-confidence does not mean they will be able to do everything they want. That view is unrealistic, one for the perfectionists. A desire to be good at everything we do in order to impress others stems from a competitive instinct and lack of personal reinforcement.

Any truly successful life has both rewards and the ability to learn from any setbacks, which increase our resilience, self- belief and determination. Real confidence 16 | P a g e requires that we face the possibility of failure constantly and deal with it. However, if we consistently lose out on both achievement and validation, even our identity is called into question. Research has suggested that athletes can also gain confidence from viewing the successful performances of others at a similar level. This second source of information is known as ? modelling’ or ? vicarious experience‘. For example, a tennis player lacking confidence in her volleying might find it useful to have a peer who has overcome similar difficulties demonstrate the skill.

By viewing others, we begin to see that, with effort, success is attainable. The very common use of celebrities in fitness videos is an example of modelling. Confidence can also be built through verbal persuasion. By means of careful reasoning, athletes can be shown that other people (ie the coach) have confidence in their abilities and believe they can achieve set goals. Coaches may even use deception to persuade their athletes that goals can be achieved – of which more later. Verbal persuasion can also take the form of ? self-talk‘, whereby the athlete convinces himself that success will follow. Finally, emotional arousal can influence confidence as well.

Although this is the least influential factor, it is important that physiological symptoms are perceived positively rather than negatively. Confidence can be enhanced by perceiving increases in heart and respiration rate as the body‘s natural preparation for top performance rather than as triggers for anxiety. Clearly, confidence is enhanced by good preparation, planning and a sense of optimism. Conversely, negative thinking and pessimism can undermine performance and limit progress. By expecting failure, we set our belief system to a negative channel and start favouring information that is consistent with these beliefs. Lack of confidence People who lack confidence may be shy and quiet, although this isn’t always the case.

Those with little confidence may pass up opportunities because they assume they wouldn’t stand a chance competing against others. They doubt themselves and their abilities. They don’t have enough confidence to even try. They fear rejection and failure. These people often don’t achieve their potential in life simply because they have already viewed themselves as failures. When people lack self-confidence they are overly preoccupied with what others think. They need to build confidence and take charge of their lives, although it is not easy for someone who suffers from low self-esteem. Over-Confidence Confidence is a necessary component in reaching our goals but over-confidence can be interpreted in negative ways.

Simply stated, over-confidence is confidence that is unwarranted. For example, a person may be very confident in an area that he actually has little knowledge and expertise. It can be a message for internal purposes such as the employees or board of directors; or external – for clients, creditors and service providers. Whoever the recipient of the business message is, it is necessary to comply with a degree of formality in conveying the message to achieve the goal of disseminating the message to the recipients. There are two types of business messages: (a) Verbal Business Messages: Verbal messages are the primary mode of passing a message. There is no need of much structure and strict compliance compared to written messages. Verbal Messages are frequently passed on in-order to carry out routine business activities. b) Written Business Message: Written messages are used whenever the information being passed on needs to be compiled and filed. This can potentially mean his language is not as developed as some of the other children so he may be a bit behind, this affects the way he communicates because it will be difficult to have conversations with others if he is does not have the same abilities as them because they may not understand what Ahmed is trying to say and their language may be to developed for Ahmed as he is still learning slowly.

A strategy that could be put in place is having a teaching assistant with him because this may make him feel comfortable and potentially more confident. The assistant can help him with words and could make picture cards for words that he may struggle with, for example having a picture of a book so he recognises that it’s a book and he can point to it so the assistant understands what he is trying to say or what he wants. The assistant could have one-to-one sessions with him to help him with communication and his schoolwork.

Having a one-to-one session with an assistant can make a lot of difference in Ahmed’s ability to communicate because if he builds a relationship with this assistant he could possibly open up and express his feelings in a way that he can even if it is not through verbal communication. Ahmed struggles with English, which is also a factor that affects the way he communicates. It can isolate him from other children in the school because English is not his first language so it will make it difficult for him to fit in with children who speak fluent English.

It will block the quality of communication and affect the needs of Ahmed being met adequately. For example, if a supply teacher was covering and didn’t know his needs, they will not be met because he may not be able to explain what his needs are because his English is limited. As he struggles with English, it will also be difficult for him to interact with other students because he will not know how to speak to them and if the children to try communicating in English, Ahmed may not understand so there will be miscommunication and a language barrier between them.

A strategy that could potentially be put in place for Ahmed to improve his English is having a translator come in to help him develop his English language. The translator could come in maybe twice a week. This would help Ahmed quite a fair bit because he can speak to the translator in the language he knows fluently and the translator can then communicate with him and help him with his English by saying words in English and then telling him what they mean in his first language.

This is a good way for Ahmed to learn English because he will gradually recognise more words and could possibly start speaking sentences, which will help with his confidence, and he may start communicating with other people. Because Ahmed struggles with communication he has now become very withdrawn from people and sometimes is antisocial which is another factor that affects the way he communicates. This is because he keeps himself away from others as he may think he cannot get involved and interact because of his needs. Ahmed may think he is different to the rest of the children so may feel like he is not included with them.

This affects his communication because he will have no one to talk to and it stops him from making friends and having a social life. A strategy that could be put in place for this is doing more group work in class because this will mean he has to talk to different people. Doing group activities may encourage him to have a conversation and get involved. This will be good for Ahmed’s confidence because he will be working with other people who could help him and it means that he wouldn’t be talking one-to-one because that may be intimidating for Ahmed as he probably wouldn’t know how to start the conversation.

Group activities include everyone so they don’t feel left out; this will help Ahmed to socialize more and he may stop being withdrawn from others as he might make friends who will make him feel normal and included. Whilst on work experience I had to have conversations with patients and some of the patients were difficult to communicate with, this is because there were factors that affected their communication. One factor was a patient who had dementia. This affected the way they communicated with others in the care home.

This affected their communication because it meant they couldn’t have a detailed conversation so there was lack of information being received. Patient with dementia sometimes respond slowly because it takes them a while to process everything. To overcome this barrier, the carers in the care home used pictures. This is because the pictures were repeated many times a day which meant the patients found it easier to remember. Pictures helped with the patients memory and it was easier for them to point at the picture so the carer knew what they were trying to say.

Lastly, another factor that affected patient’s communication in the care home was a patient who was partially deaf. This was a barrier that affected the communication between the carer and the patient. When the carer was trying to have a conversation with the patient, it was very difficult for the patient to hear because there was also a lot of background noise which made it worse. Sometimes what the patient heard was different to what the carer was saying so the conversation was not effective because the point was not getting across.

To overcome this barrier, the carers were using sign language because sign language was more effective as the patient understood it better and it also didn’t require hearing. Sign language was known by the majority of the staff members so they could communicate with different patients who had hearing difficulties. Another stragey that was put in place for some of the patients were hearing aids. These were only used for people who were struggling a lot to hear.

Hearing aids help with hearing and it means words become louder in the patients ear and they could hear everything. This made the patients feel confident within themselves. The patients found it easier to follow conversations so communication between the patient and carer was more effective. Overall, it is important that these factors can be overcome in order for service users to have effective communication with others. There are many strategies that could be put in place and these should all be considered when getting service users to communicate.
