Teaches students how to apply behavioral principles and techniques that may help people increase their motivation to exercise and change health-impairing behaviors. The course is based on research, theory, and practical application in the field of physical activity.

Examination of theories and current research related to sport and exercise behavior will be covered. The student will be introduced to the field of kinesiology by providing a broad overview of the major topics in the area.

Discusses the concepts of improved performance in all fitness areas. Emphasis is placed upon updated information associated with nutrition and human performance. Measurement of body composition is used as it correlates to training and diet/ exercise programs. Introduces the student to the physiological responses nd adaptations of individuals to exercise as well as the application to sports medicine, rehabilitation and general fitness. The laboratory provides experiences that demonstrate the underlying theoretical constructs that govern physiological responses and adaptations to exercise.

Provides the student with the opportunity to conduct laboratory fitness assessments, evaluate test results and develop exercise prescriptions. In addition, the student will be expected to become knowledgeable about the promotion and marketing f fitness programs.

Provides the student with theoretical knowledge and practical skills in preparation for a nationally recognized personal training certification approved by the Colorado Community College System. These Certifications are limited to the following: ACSM, ACE, NSCA, NCSF, AFAA, and AEA. Upon certification, the student will have the ability to develop and implement exercise programs for healthy populations and/or those individuals with medical clearance to exercise.

Designed for all majors in the Human Performance Program and provides the student on-the-job training. The student will have the opportunity to further integrate academic knowledge and apply those skills gained through the Human Performance degree curriculum. Working in various capacities within the ACC Fitness/Aquatic Center, Physical Education department and the Employee Wellness Program will be required. Students should receive entry-level proficiency at the completion of the HWE 248, HWE 237 and HWE 122 or current CPR-PR/AED and First Aid Certification.

Obesity is Not a Personal Problem As the obesity wave crashes over the United States, more Americans are paying out of pocket to flourish the $33 billion commercial diet industry (Spake 283). As American’s waistbands continue to expand, they immerse themselves in one of the largest, most scandalous consumer markets: the weight loss industry. Amanda Spake, author of “Rethinking Weight”, addresses the question as to who should cover the overall cost of weight loss programs. Spake challenges that insurance companies should pay for the expenses that obese people encounter.

This, she states, is due to the fact that obesity is a biological “disease” and it should be treated and paid for like any other critical illness (283). In this article, Spake does not present the importance of physical activity, only discussing unsuccessful dieting experiences and bad genetic makeup. Although Spake briefly suggests that exercising is an advantage to those who are obese, she puts the solitary blame for obesity on the genetic aspect. From 1986 to 2000, the number of people who are severely obese–which is identified by having a body mass index of 40 or more–has quadrupled, from about 1 in 200 adults to 1 in every 50.

This startling statistic has caused more people to be aware of this rising occurrence that has swept over the United States. Obesity has medical professionals worrying; not only are the numbers of overweight people continuing to rise but weight-related medical costs are soaring. Healthcare costs for illnesses due to obesity have now exceeded those related to both smoking and alcoholism. The obesity epidemic is a big contributor to skyrocketing health care costs in the United States, partly due to the weight-related diseases that come hand-in-hand with obesity.

Ailments such as type II diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, and high cholesterol are closely connected to obesity and an alarming 80 percent of obese adults suffer from one of these life-threatening diseases (Spake 283). Many research foundations are now connecting obesity to a person’s genetic makeup, calling it a biological development that an individual cannot control. Spake suggests that insurance companies should cover the costs of obesity as it is a genetically and biologically determined disease thus the individual does not have the ability to lose weight on their own.

As a result, researchers suggest that including the treatment of obesity in health care plans might bring science and sanity to the anarchy of weight loss (Spake 286). Many researchers do not identify obesity as a disease in fear that unhealthy weight-loss programs will someday be considered acceptable treatment and ultimately mandated to be covered by insurance. Although Spake validates her assertions by backing up her words with credible opinions and statistics, she weakens her argument by not addressing the importance of physical activity. Maria Pfisterer is an obese mother who Spake claims has tried every weight-loss strategy imaginable.

However, nowhere does it say that in addition to the drugs and “quick-weight-loss fads” Pfisterer had attempted to include an exercise regime. She claimed that all of the programs she tried resulted in a few pounds lost and quite a few more gained; always returning to the same 197 to 202 pound range. Being overweight is the result of one thing: eating more food than one burns (Spake 285). Nowhere in the article does Spake suggest that physical activity is a effective, healthy and inexpensive way to lose weight, choosing to put forth the idea that weight loss comes only from high-priced dieting programs.

In her article, Spake claims that genetics are the sole factor for obesity in America. There are many other factors mentioned in the article that play into someone’s weight including the food they eat, their level of physical activity, and societal factors such as advertising. Also, Spake quotes Arthur Frank, director of George Washington University’s Weight Management Program, “So saying to an obese person who wants to lose weight, ‘All you have to do is eat less,’ is like saying to a person suffering from asthma, ‘All you have to do is breathe better’” (284).

Obesity and asthma are two very different things therefore should not be compared. An individual who is overweight can take control of their weight-gain by taking more personal responsibility and making healthier choices. However, asthma is an inflammatory disorder that can strike at any time which causes an individual to wheeze or gasp for air where an individual cannot control its effects. Not everyone agrees that obesity should be considered a disease, some stating that the obesity epidemic can be overturned by individuals taking more personal accountability for their wellbeing and opting to make healthier lifestyle choices (Spake 283).

In an alarmed attempt to make readers believe that obesity should be considered a disease and insurance companies should cover the cost of the individual’s expenses, Spake fails to provide enough evidence to support her claim. She maintains that overweight people have a genetic flaw that causes them to be susceptible to weight gain. Physical exercise, which is seldom mentioned in Spake’s article, is an important weight loss tool that helps to burn the extra calories an individual’s body does not burn on its own.

Spake portrays a defective argument that invalidates her main purpose. People with health insurance should look to see what is covered and seek healthier, less-expensive alternatives to fix the things that are not included. Regardless of what “Rethinking Weight” suggests, overweight individuals have an equal opportunity to replace their existing lifestyle with healthier habits. A business model is like any other model; it represents and summarizes how whole businesses do business. The business model explains, in summary, the fundamental nature of the business and how the business makes money, without having to share complexities of strategies, “processes, units, rules, hierarchies, workflows, and systems” (Business Model Designs and Innovation, 2005, p. ). For example, the business that is chosen is a Geriatric Health Club and Daycare. The company makes money by offering wellness and exercise services to senior citizens all over the Merrillville community; for a reasonable amount of money. The fundamental nature of the club is to encourage the elderly, ages 55 and older, to continue to live a healthier and active life, by offering leisure activities, social interaction with their peers, nutrition education, and exercise (Business Model Designs, and Innovation, 2005).

The business model was chosen because research, indicates that “High-intensity resistance exercise training is a feasible and effective means of counteracting muscle weakness and physical frailty in very elderly people. In contrast, multinutrient supplementation without concomitant exercise does not reduce muscle weakness or physical frailty” (Clements, Evans, Fiatarone, Kehayias, Lipsit, Nelson, O’Neill Roberts, Ryan, and Solares, 2009, 1769). The impact of this business model helps the company to function and guide the company in a productive direction.

The business model helps the company to stay profitable by catering to a fast increasing age group. “The business structure is the type of legal entity that exists to contract to perform licensed work. Examples of legal entities are individual/sole proprietors, corporations, limited liability companies (LLC), partnerships, limited partnerships (LP), and limited liability partnerships (LLP)” are examples of business structures (Minnesota Department of Labor, and Industry, n. d, p. 1).

The structure of the Geriatric Health Club and Daycare is a partnership. A partnership is a business agreement between two or more people, with an understanding of making a profit (NSW Small Business, 2001). The geriatric health club and daycare operates under a registered business name. The business name the club operates under is Transitions Senior Health Club and Daycare. The reason a partnership was chosen is because liabilities can be shared (NSW Small Business, 2001). A functional structure is for the staff.

The CNAs works directly with customers, RNs oversees the CNAs, trainers, therapist, and assist the Medical doctor. The partnership structure impacts the club by the sharing of liabilities and increased financial investments and the sharing of responsibilities. The functional structure brings order with the staff and creates a harmonious working environment (NSW Small Business, 2001). “The business culture is the way your organization operates, the customs, attitudes; etiquette and etc. ” (Answer, 2007, p. 1).

For example, Transitions will use “The Plane tree’s approach, which is holistic and encourages healing in all dimensions; mental, emotional, spiritual, social and physical” (Axia College of University of Phoenix 2008, p194). The Plane tree’s approach maximizes the outcomes of healthcare by combining “harmonizing medical therapies, such as mind and body medicine, therapeutic massage, acupuncture, yoga, and energy therapies with conventional medical therapies”(Axia College, 2009, p. 194). The medical staff is well trained, board certified, and licensed by the state.

The trainers are certified in yoga, low impact exercises, and small weights. The instructors are RNs with bachelor’s degrees; a Medical Doctor and a certified massage therapist, will be on staff. The staff is given two weeks of vacation and health benefits. They are also given incentive awards for out standing work. The impact that this business culture will have on Transitions is a healthy, safe and serene environment. The customers will be encouraged to reach their wellness goals and lead a longer and active life.

However, some kids use sports and other things as excuses to not do well in school. If a child really wanted to be successful academically, they would not let anything get in their way. After viewing The Simpsons it has become apparent that the six key factors influencing homers overall health and physical activity play a big part in his life. Homer’s Heredity factors influencing his overall health and level of physical activity are hard to determine as he is a cartoon character and no real evidence of his family’s history has been shown in the popular TV series. But for example if his father had suffered from a heredity disease he might possibly have taken or take his health more seriously. Signs of unhealthy hereditary aspects in homer and his father are that they are both overweight and both are balding.

They also both share the common feature of no intelligence and forgetfulness. These generic features which were passed on to homer are negative and haven’t helped his overall health and level of Physical activity. Abraham (homer’s father) wasn’t there for most of homer’s childhood as he was in the Second World War. Homers mother left him at the age of 11 and these aspects must have had a great impact on the way he grew up and the level of understanding that he adopted about life. He acquires the same laid back nature as his father but doesn’t believe that they are similar in anyway.

He didn’t participate in much physical activity as a teenager and was an overweight adolescent who drunk. Wether these habits were passed down or just equated on his own from other factors in his life homer didn’t care about the damages and disruption he was causing his body by not being healthy and engaging in physical activity. Another factor which has influenced Homers overall health and level of physical activity is his lack of education. Homer is a low level night class graduate and has no awareness or knowledge of the extreme importance of being healthy and engaging in physical activity.

He never takes notice of TV ads which promote good health and physical activity habits, but instead takes notice of ads regarding food and beer. Because of his lack of education, Homer is quite stupid and would eat until he gets sick and can‘t fit anymore into himself or drink until he is completely blind and passes out. Not having an education about these sorts of things has shown how bad the effects are, Homer doesn’t know and has never been taught about how to be an overall healthy person. Lifestyle is a major factor of homers overall health and physical activity level.

Homer doesn’t do exercise or eat healthy. He is a borderline alcoholic and visits his local pub, Moe’s tavern regularly. There he socialises with drunken low lives and then returns home at night drunk and tired. Homer also tends to eat a lot of junk food, especially donuts which he cannot resist. He will also eat mouldy old food if in need and doesn’t care about the quality of it or the calories it contains let alone the harmful bacteria which could be lurking inside it. Homer likes to eat at the Frying Dutchman, which he almost put out of business on its “All You Can Eat Night”.

Since then, Homer’s picture had hung in the restaurant, where he’s known as “Bottomless Pete: Nature’s Cruellest Mistake. ” Homer has a routine of getting up, going to work, going to moes then arriving home and going to bed. On the weekends Homer will occasionally engage in recreational sports or doze off in his hammock in the backyard. He will not even play a game with his children or go for a run down the street, Homer does not do exercise. Homer drives recklessly to his destinations and doesn’t care fro road rules.

He also endures in countless rick taking behaviour including riding a skateboard off a cliff or getting involved with the mafia by mistake, it is his stupidity and ignorance which get Homer into these types of situations on a regular basis. Homer has also been hospitalised on numerous occasions for various heart attacks and injuries caused by his ruthless behaviours. He depends on his wife to look after him everyday without fail which angers her occasionally. Also Homer releases his stress on his son Bart who he strangles when angry or coned for money or any other privileges.

His health is not managed properly and its effects have been shown on the show throughout its later years. Homer has priorities such as work, his family, money and drinking/eating these factors impact on his overall health and level of physical activity. Homer loves his family, and he’ll do just about anything to prove it—even if that means making himself look foolish. Homer works at Springfield’s nuclear power plant as a safety inspector, a job he secured after passing the specialized training course on his third attempt.

Not once does he consider the health-damaging side-effects of his gargantuan size, all he wants is freedom from going to work: “Oh, I’m never going to be disabled,” he moans, “I’m sick of being so healthy! “Once during a strike, Homer’s critical functions could be filled only by a brick placed on a lever. Homer doesn’t take much pride in his work and normally just sits there eating donuts while watching TV or socialising with a college. Although he was trained Homer has little idea of how to do his job this could be caused by his poor diet and lack of physical activity which keep your brain alert and ready for a days work.

Homer also sees money as a priority in life and will do close to anything to obtain it. He seems to always get conned or have to engage in some daring act before he can get his money (which he never does). Homers want for money could have been caused by his immense eating and drinking lifestyle, which is not cheap. This therefore means he may need more money to replace the loss caused by drinking and eating a lot. Homer doesn’t care about his health and believes that, being healthy is too expensive. Drinking duff beer and eating donuts or other junk foods give comfort to Homer.

He doesn’t see these things as dead objects, but he sees them as alive and wanting to be eating. In many episodes homers food will come alive and beg to be eating. Homer cannot resist and quickly gobbles down 12 donuts in one go. Another factor that influences Homers overall health and level of physical activity is the amount of motivation that he is given. Homer often receives small amounts of motivation from his family who tell him he needs to loss some weight and that he ’can’ do it if he applies himself.

Homers friends on the other hand don’t seem to notice homers weight problem, drinking problem or lack of exercise. They just take him as he is, this is mainly because most of Homers friends are a “bunch of low life’s and bums” and have the same problems and issues themselves. Marge motivates Homer stop drinking and lose weight; he tries and sometimes succeeds but then puts it back on again due to temptation from the media, friends and the environment in which he lives. Homer doesn’t believe that being obese and drinking a lot is a problem.

He doesn’t feel he needs to change and majority of the time doesn’t listen to motivation if he is told. Homers environment also plays a large part in his influence to be overall healthy and have a healthy level of physical activity. Homers pub, Moe’s tavern is local, therefore easy to get to and a temptation for him. Also not many people in homers local town engage in PA or are substanualy healthy. All homers friends are drinkers and smokers, and Homer likes to keep his image of a typical American man. Homer lives in a low socio-economic and socio-cultural environment and this has an impact on his lifestyle.

Homer has no ethics or morals about his health and isn’t ashamed to say that he is fat and stupid. There are fitness facilities surrounding Homers environment which are available to him, but he doesn’t use them. These include the gym, which in one episode, he had never heard of it and called it a “gim” and also various parks around his town. As you can see the six factors, heredity, education, lifestyle, priorities, motivation and environment have all contributed to homer being in the state he is today.
