The Ideas of Family, Values, Machismo in the Movie, Star Maps

Throughout the movie, Star Maps, many ideas about family values, machismo among the males, and patriarchy passed on through generations are easily observed. They begin with simple, common, stereotypical ideologies such as having the family eat dinner together, or by having the father stress the fact that he brings home the bacon. These ideas later progress into more complicated, as well as disturbing matters. The movie expresses these ideas by having the father hurt women physically or by displaying violence and disrespect to those that you are supposed to love. The first idea about family that I recognized was when the family sits down and eats dinner together.

This scene is towards the beginning which made me believe that they were similar to other families and that there wasnt that much tension between them. Another issue that kept constant throughout the movie was the strong bond between Maria and Carlos. They always supported each others dreams, had good communication and would try to give each other advice. A good example of this was when Carlos got back from Mexico and Maria told him not to go to work with his dad. Instead, she told him that he should pursue his acting career alone. The last family value that was present was how Maria, the daughter took over her mothers role.

Because the mother was sick Maria became completely responsible for everyone else. She had to put her life aside in order to cook dinner, clean the house, take care of her mom, and try to keep the family together. It seemed as if Maria didnt do it no one else would. Especially not her father, he was too busy being with his girlfriend and making money. This leads me to the ideas of machismo that are also present in the movie. The fathers character is the best example that displays these two ideas the best. He always has to be in charge and he also sees women as property. He feels that because he is a man that he can cheat on his wife and everything is fine.

In one scene, Maria invites a male friend for dinner. When her father gets there he tells her friend that hes just her friend in order to get a piece of ass. He continues by saying that if he wants her, he has to pay fifty dollars and that he should accept the offer because its pretty cheap. In another scene, the fathers girlfriend finds out that his wife is not dying so she slaps him for lying to her and he hits her back as if she was a man. He puts her down by telling her shes a whore and displays machismo when he says, Who do you think you are? The last form of machismo that is displayed is the fact that the father keeps bringing up the whole idea that he gives his family a house and food and that they are ungrateful because they dont even thank him, likes thats all a father has to do. This brings me to the issue of patriarchy.

On numerous occasions the father mentions the fact that his dad put him on the streets when he was young and that he taught him to be a man. His father taught him that in order to be a man he had to give up his dreams and make money by selling his body to strangers. It seemed that he idealized his father and for that reason he thinks that what he does is what a man is supposed to do. The movie Star Maps tried to display these ideas throughout the film. Although the ideas were a bit extreme and exaggerated, it still let us see some of the problems a Latino family goes through.

The Book That Night: Differences in Family Values between the 1990s and 1960s

There are many differences between the 1990s and the 1960s. Many of these comparisons can be found in the 1960s based book That night, and a modern day high school. In the 1960s the average family ate together, relaxed together, watched television together, and most importantly the average family of the 1960s stayed together. Here in the 1990s a large portion of Smithtown high school does not have families that all eat together, most do not relax together, and a large majority would not be found watching television together. A major reason for this is that unlike the 1960s a portion of the families in the 1990s are no longer a complete family.

One example of difference is an unwed mother. In the book That Night Sheryl got pregnant as an unwed teenager. In this book one of the main characters Sheryl got pregnant by Rick. Sheryl was immediately sent to her aunts house in another state to keep her away from Rick. In Smithtown high school an average pregnant teenager would have an abortion. Although most people feel that this is unjust to have an abortion at any time in life many people do. It is just a fact of life that when you are a teenager you just cant ruin your life.

Another difference between the book that took place in the 1960s and in a modern day suburb is that many families no longer sit down together to eat dinner. In the book every family sat down together and ate a dinner. When the dinner is complete they all take to their porches and sit down for a sunset. This is always done as a family. In a modern high school more than half of the student population does not eat dinner as a whole family. In most cases, there is after school job involved, or a large amount of homework. If a survey was taken the majority of the high school population would say that they do not eat dinner as a family.

The most incomplete factor of the times is that most families today have computers, televisions, stereos, and much more in individual rooms. Therefore there is not one specific room of the house that the family meets to spend time together. This means, where there was once a time for communication as a family in the 1960s; there is no longer that factor in modern society. An average high school student spends about an hour on the internet per night. This craze just started no more than four years ago. Also a majority of high school students have a television in the room. This eliminates the idea of family time.

There is a great factor that is different now then from the 1960s. There is a much higher percentage of divorces in todays era than in the past. This breaks families up. The bond a family could have had is no longer an option. There are so many other reasons for family life being different now than in the 1960s that you cant list them all. This is not true for all families though, there are some families that still sit down to dinner every night and have a great family life and this is what I think everyone wishes they can accomplish.

Nigerian Culture, Tradition and Family Values in Death and the King’s Horseman by Wole Soyinka

In the book Death and the King’s Rider by Wole Soyinkaas, the author uses Nigerian culture, traditions and family values to engage you in the history. Yet it is the interference of colonialism that acts as the story’s catalyst. If it was not for the arrogance and cluelessness of these foreigners, this story could have taken place, but its purpose would have been very different.

Without the influence of Nigerias colonizers such complex characters as Amusa, Olunde, and Joseph would not have occurred. It is obvious that through there interaction with the foreigners shaped who they were as people. Whether it be their religion, their goals and aspirations, or how the colonized themselves looked at their culture. Through the influence of Christianity foreigners were able to separate some of the tribesmen and women from their tribes, get them to adopt a foreign religion and God and then look at their beliefs with contempt, such was the case of the servant Joseph. Then you had a more complex character in the form of Amusa who accepted Christianity yet had respect for the old ways and customs. This was evident when he would not even looked at the Pilkings who out of their lack of respect wore a sacred costume to a masquerade ball. He was the most curious character to me because I could not figure out was he truly drawn to Christianity and the beliefs of!

these outsiders, or was this simply a case of giving up what one believes because it could make life a lot easier for this person. Then one can look at Olunde, son of the Elesin Oba, who crept away to the mother country for education. When he left I do not think that he had such an appreciation for his culture and traditions. Yet, through time around his white counterparts made him realize the lack of respect that the colonizers had toward other cultures and people.

Next one can look at the perspective of the story, which a good portion of the time is centered around the Pilkings and their perspective on the whole situation. You have these outsiders who view all of the culture and traditions of this area as primitive. This perspective mainly comes from colonizers because they have to assert themselves as being more civilized and superior for them to put their beliefs and lifestyle on the people in which they colonize. This can be seen when Jane tells her husband to be smart when dealing with the indigenous people of this region. This makes it seem as though the Pilkings look at the Nigerians as inferior people because of their traditions.

Lastly, I look at the main idea of the story which showed the colonizers lack of respect for the Nigerians culture through the interference with a tradition that has occurred long before their arrival. Their beliefs actually changed the outcome of the story because Elesin Oba the man who had previously pursued death changed his belief that it was his duty to die when Mr. Pilkings came to stop him from completing his task. This broke a long tradition that probably had never been questioned until this clash of European and African values occurred. It also caused the premature death of Olunde. In his attempt to redeem his fathers dishonor he sacrifices himself. All of this can be attributed to colonialism. All of this can be looked at as an interference by a technologically advanced culture onto a less advanced culture and placing their values upon them.

Family Values

Family nursing is still seen as a fairly new specialty area in nursing. There has been discussion to define what family nursing is and what role family and nursing play in this matter. The consensus is that all definitions have as core concepts the notion of providing nursing care to families and family members (Braun & Foster, 2011). Nurses have realized what an important role that families can play in promoting positive health outcomes by getting them involved in patient care. With that said families are seen in the context as how the nurse sees them and works with them.

There are several definitions and concepts of family and they are believed to contribute to education, research and theory. Family Concepts The first concept seen is family as context. The patients care is individually focused and the family is seen as a resource but also can be seen as a stressor. The patient is seen as the primary focus and the nurse includes the family if she sees it to be of value and beneficial to the patient as a resource. In regards to promoting health with this type of nursing the patients family becomes involved if the nurse sees it as a benefit and if so they can help the family and be a good resource for them.

The second concept that is seen is family as sum. In this type of nursing the whole family is treated and when they have all been treated then care has been provided. Health promotion has been met when care is provided to all family members. The third concept is family subsystems which is the basis for interpersonal family nursing. Examples of this type of nursing would be marital relationships and care giver issues. The fourth concept is family as the client. The patient is the whole family and that is what the focus is about. Family dynamics and relationships are examined along with the outer environment.

The last concept is family as a component of society. The family is seen as one subsystem within a larger one such as a community or society similar to an educational or religious institution (Friedman, Bowden, & Jones, 2003). Family can also be seen and described in other non-traditional manners. The term family takes on new meaning and is no longer considered the traditional mother and father roles. The new family unit may consist of single parents, divorced, gay, two female or two male parents but regardless of the mixture it is still a family unit that nursing has to learn to work with.

The organizational changes put demands on professionals, such as nurses, but also demand an active participation by the family. Thus, nurses have to find new perspectives for their role and to create new ways for collaborating with their patients/families (Braun & Foster, 2011). The nurse’s challenge will be to learn what is necessary and meet the needs of this non-traditional family. The educational needs and resources are focused in a different direction but the family still has the same needs of a traditional family. Family in and Around Home

Family in this area is considered family as context where the patient is the main focus. If the nurse sees that the patient’s family is needed as a resource then they are contacted. Sometimes if the family is seen as a road block then the nurse may opt to leave them out of the picture. There is evidence of families playing a role in the recovery of the patient (Sjoblom, Pejlert, & Asplund, 2004). In mental health most of the patients need someone to help them and often there are many patients out there who do not have a guardian or health care power of attorney.

The patients are left to make their own decisions and when they are suffering from an acute exacerbation of their illness, this can make it difficult for them to safely make decisions. It is important that they have a guardian, family or friends to help them. Sometimes the closest thing to family is their case manager or an employer. There has been a move away from regarding the family as a burden to looking at the burden families are carrying. The interviews reveal that this new view has not been completely integrated in practice (Sjoblom, Pejlert, & Asplund, 2004).

The family as context is the best method for the patient since they should be the focus of the problem. Theory Florence Nightingale discussed in her notes on nursing several issues that involved the family. She knows of their importance in getting the family involved in caring for the sick. She mentioned in her notes, tips on caring for the ill and it also involved the family. Her theory may have been basic and discussed environmental issues which could be considered a weakness but it also discussed some strengths which were the importance of family involvement and its relevance to healing themselves.

The families of people with a severe mental illness often carry a heavy burden. Research has shown that they feel that they are to blame for the disease; they experience sadness, worry, shame and guilt. The lack of participation reinforces the feeling of being excluded. (Sjoblom, Pejlert, & Asplund, 2004). Nursing can only continue to assess the need for family involvement and encourage the families to stay committed with the patients which will help promote healing and increase their support systems.

A debate over ABC Family Values

The article is based on the analysis of a Walt Disney Company owned ABC TV series;   “The Secret Life of the American Teenager” and attempts to relate its scenes and theme to the present day common teenage sexual encounters and early pregnancies. The authors attempt to question the shift to  programs  that are sex based by the ABC TV given that  Disney  not only has themes, in their view, are out of place on a channel with But “Secret Life” has the word “family” in its name but also has  a chaste image (James & Chmielewsk, 2009). By venturing into teenage sex series, Disney which presumably ought to promote family values and fight sex before marriage, appears to have undergone a kind of revolution.

The series reportedly show playing on bed, a father enquiring about daughters’ sex life and revelation about a father molesting his son. ABC Family also plans to show a comedy about a young woman rejected by a boyfriend after having his baby, keeping in mind that its programs are known to advance youth innocence (James & Chmielewsk, 2009).

In a rejoinder however, the Disney-ABC Television Group argues that they are just being genuine and responsive to the life experiences of their audiences in attempt to mirror what is happening in the society (James & Chmielewsk, 2009). However, this comment has generated concern about the paradigm shift from the “family programming,” to contemporary series despite a sensible reason to appeal to the younger viewers; a situation necessitated by research findings.

I think that the “Sex Lives of the American Teenager” a timely series by ABC owing to the increasing cases of teenage sexual experiences, early pregnancies and child molestation. These, are social ills which contravene Disney’s family values hence the series serve to educate the public. At the same time, ABC has ensured that each episode ends with an advisory that encourages parents and children to talk before it’s too late, an idea which I believe illustrates the very message that the explicit teenage scenes tend to depict.
