The Concept of Happiness In The Fahrenheit 451

A writer once said, ” is the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim, and end of human existence.” This compels people to interrogate the significance of their happiness and if it genuinely embodies purposeful lives that they want to live. by Ray Bradbury teaches readers that happiness is directly tied to genuinely knowing one’s self. Bradbury tackles the question as well as the theme of what it means to be truly happy, which deals with the books society’s view of happiness.

Through the main characters, Bradbury portrays the different extents of happiness; a lifeless path, heading nowhere, as well as another extending to pure human experience as coming across what makes you happy as a person. He highlights that being truly happy is figuring out who one is and knowing what one wants. At the beginning of the novel, Montag reveals his character by telling himself his real feelings. “Happy! Of all the nonsense… He felt his smile slide away… He was not happy. He was not happy. He said the words to himself. He recognized this as the true state of affairs. He wore his happiness like a mask…” (Bradbury 8).

He finally came across of his unhappiness. Until this point, he didn’t ever stop to think that he was miserable. He had gone with his life and pretended that he was happy when he wasn’t. In this quote, Montag is implying that he doesn’t really know what is making him unhappy. He faces problems getting back up and seeing his life as exciting once again. All in all, genuinely being happy isn’t easily understood, it takes a lot to know what oneself as a person emotionally and physically needs to make one feel the way they want to.

Alongside finding out who one is as a person, the majority of people take their happiness as a sanctuary in nothing but submissive entertainment. Mildred Montag is portrayed as a women who doesn’t realize who she is and what she actually feels towards herself. Mildred effectively portrays the idea when she said “My ‘family’ is people. They tell me things: I laugh. They laugh!” (Bradbury 69). In this quote, Mildred is describing the gigantic wall television. Happiness being represented in this novel is being portrayed by hiding behind a fake mask to show that they are happy when they really are not.

Technological entertainment is so crucial in her life that she refers it to as “family,” indicating the television shows as her loved ones. Relating herself to a world that isn’t even real, Mildred finds herself able to relate to the fake characters and stories displayed in front of her, giving her an artificial sense of happiness. She achieves her happiness, as she lifelessly watches her ‘family’ with a senseless mind. Her actual family is only Guy Montag, whom she has no genuine affection towards.

Montag is resentful with Mildred because of her incapability to express feelings for anything. “We need to be really bothered once in a while. How long is it since you were really bothered? About something important, about something real?” (Bradbury 49). In this quote, Montag illustrates that people like Mildred use false entertainment to avoid fret and feelings, by replacing it with imaginary characters, which ends with a happy ending all the time. Mildred does not realize she is living a pointless life, a life that isn’t even hers.

However, Montag expresses towards Mildred that living true life comes with struggles, and that she needs to take her own responsibilities and her choices of a way of happiness, something that Mildred fails to do for herself. In Fahrenheit 451, Mildred reflects the perspective of society that almost everyone is a reflection of herself, an uncaring and lifeless lifestyle by achieving happiness through ignorance, which Bradbury portrays that to be happy, one has to know how to connect individually, with others and the world to truly understand what being happy really is to one.

Furthermore, happiness is represented based on human equality and finding happiness through the satisfaction of their curiosity, and human and world experiences. Bradbury depicts the perspective of Captain Beatty’s on human equality. Beatty states to Montag “We must all be alike… everyone made equal. Each man the image of every other; then all are happy” (Bradbury 55). Beatty explains that it isn’t equality that causes people to be happy but rather that inequality that causes an imbalance.

He goes on with explaining that to be equal, one must not think about or read books, because thinking creates chaos and imbalance. In the novel, the firemen burn books to advocate happiness through equality. Beatty’s knowledge takes an ordered approach in finding happiness as a lifeless path. To add on, Clarisse and Professor Faber are characters who discover how happiness is found in oneself. They find happiness through their own indulgences, curiosity and experiences. They are aware for who they are and direct tie to knowing themselves. Faber implies his happiness saying “The things you’re looking for, Montag, are in the world, but the only way the average chap will ever see ninety-nine percent of them is in a book” (Bradbury 82).

Montag, for example, is always searching for who he is and where his happiness lies. In the other hand, Faber says that through the books, he can reach the desires and peace that he wants to make him indeed himself. He feels that true happiness can be contacted through books and writings, a human experience that gives one a new realization of life. Just like the Professor, Clarisse is separated from the society because she knows who she is and what makes her happy as a person which alters her perspective on things to be different from others.

Clarisse restricts herself from the technology, explores the world and still has fun that develops her own personal knowledge and interests. Clarisse chooses to spend time with her family, interact with the world, and discover new things. Clarisse directly knows her true self and that its her own self esteem and personality that makes her truly happy. Given these points, happiness can be found based on human equality or through satisfaction of curiosity and experiences, but as an end result knowing what first really makes oneself, in order to have happiness.

In conclusion, with the novel, Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury implements the theme happiness as the primary focus and that it ties directly to genuinely knowing one’s self. With the different approach with each character, Bradbury brings a stance of how true happiness is considered to each person. He portrays it as a lifeless path or as another to pure human experience. He highlights that being truly happy is figuring out who one is and know what one wants, to know where they want to head emotionally and physically. Bradbury uses the novel to demonstrate that with happiness, it genuinely represents purposeful lives that they want to live knowing who one is with themselves.

Abstract

The researchers of the present study constructed a scale that is designed to measure the perceived subjective well-being of the Filipino youth, and how they are affected by the three factors namely: life satisfaction, negative affect and positive affect. The items were constructed based on the information gathered by the researchers from journals and other sources.

The researchers constructed a questionnaire with a 5-point Likert scale which consists of 59 items and was administered to 200 Filipino youth participants. The data analysis revealed a Cronbach’s alpha of . 895 Filipino Youth Subjective well-being Scale The Filipino youth have their own way of satisfying their lives and how they will be contented and happy with it. The most commonly used question probing life satisfaction is: “how satisfied are you with your life as a whole at present? ” Some are uncertain with regards to their overall happiness, while some are certain that they are indeed happy and satisfied with their life.

In this study, the researchers constructed a 5-point Likert Scale that is designed to measure an individual’s perceived level of well-being. The researcher’s objective to determine which factor gives stronger influence on the subjective well-being of the Filipino youth. Does it follow that Filipino youth with parents are happier than those without? Can the researchers conclude that youth who chose to have no social networks, company, or friends, are lonelier than those with web-like affiliations? Filipino Youth Subjective Well-Being Framework Subjective well-being is defined as the individual’s current evaluation of her happiness. Such an evaluation is often expressed in affective terms; when asked about subjective well-being, participants will often say, “I feel good” (Schwartz & Strack, 1999). Measuring people’s life happiness has one that makes life interesting especially when they know that they are satisfied with what they feel. In the present study, the researchers came up with three sub-factors namely life satisfaction, positive affect and negative affect.

They aimed to use these three factors to measure a person’s perceived subjective well-being. Also, they were able to know how these factors put an effect on the Filipino youth. Affect describes the emotions and feelings of a person based on his or her present life. Life satisfaction is how an individual judges his or her overall satisfaction in life (Hoorn, 2007). Life satisfaction is the measure of an individual’s perceived level of well-being and happiness. It is frequently assessed in surveys, by asking individuals how satisfied they are with their own lives.

Positive and negative affect are both states and traits that have been shown to relate to personalities such as happiness and anxiety. Review of Related Literature Subjective well-being Subjective well-being (SWB) is the scientific name for how people evaluate their lives in terms of a global judgment (such as satisfaction with one’s life and experience of more frequent pleasant emotions as compared to unpleasant emotions (Diener et al. , 1999). SBW is the self-evaluation of life satisfaction (Robbins & Kliewe, 2000, as cited in Vera et al. , 2008) and its cognitive evaluation is measured through judgments of life satisfaction.

Meanwhile, affective components are measured by assessing the frequency of the occurrence of pleasant and unpleasant emotions. Life Satisfaction This article looks into the situation of people with spinal cord injury during acute rehabilitation and 3 months after discharge. The participants were assessed on how they can scale their life satisfaction during rehabilitation. The hypothesis of this study is that greater benefit finding, hope, and positive affect will be related to greater life satisfaction both during the initial acute rehabilitation period as well as 3 months post discharge.

It was stated that spinal cord injury (SCI) can result to life changes. Decreased rates of returning to work (Schonherr, Groothoff, Mulder, & Eisma, 2005), poorer life satisfaction, decreased life participation, decreased independence, decreased community integration (Charlifue & Gerhart, 2004), and increased psychological distress have all been found to occur in this population. The results revealed initial support for facilitators playing an important role in life satisfaction, which facilitators contribute uniquely at 3-month follow up. In summary, the results provide support for a predictive relationship between facilitator variable, life satisfactions for individuals with acute SCI. These findings suggest that facilitators potentially play a strong role in the rehabilitation patient’s subjective well being and provide potential avenues for interventions that could be proactively applied to facilitate positive outcomes.

According to the article about science of happiness, people have their different opinion on how they live their life but most people are not contended on it. According to the Subjective- well being (SWB), defines as an indicator of people’s happiness on how they rated their life as worth- living and on how people funding on to achieve satisfaction in their lives. Another idea of what constitutes a good life, however, is that it is desirable for people themselves to think that they are living good lives (Diener, 2000).

Our study concerns college students on how they rated their subjective well-being, since one of the sources of people’s subjective well-being is based on their self-fulfillment. Based on the article it was said that presents means from an international college sample of 7,204 respondents signified how students view happiness. The co variation of resources such as money, family support, social skills, and intelligence with subjective well-being (SWB) was assessed in 222 college students (110 men and 112 women) in Midwestern University. The resources found in SWB are material, social, or personal characteristics that a person possesses that he or she can use to make progress toward her or his personal goals.

Resources can be external possessions (e. g. , money), social roles (e. g. , being a chairperson), and personal characteristics (e. g. , intelligence). The experimenters used a Life Scale, and a number of interesting findings emerged from this study. First, SWB, as measured by different methods, formed strongly convergent factors. Second, family and friends rated the target participants as above average on every single resource. Third, there are certain resources that are prominently depicted in the media as being very important to happiness (e. g. money, physical attractiveness, and material possessions). They theorized that those assets are related to SWB insofar as they help individuals attain states they desire. To the extent that people differ in their desires and the resources they use to attain those desires, the effects of particular assets on SWB will differ from person to person. Happiness is a common goal toward which people strive, but for many it remains frustratingly out of reach (Buss, 2000). It was said that the best things in life are free but it was not stated how we can get them.

Gaining happiness is hard to attain, and eagerness to gain happiness can frustrate people. In this article it was stated how people desire to feel happy. These include the desire to be successful, to have a good life, to have friends who never let them down and to gain such confidence to overcome life. When a people gain these desires, it can make them feel complete and satisfied. We as researchers conclude that fulfilling one’s desire can make a person satisfied and happy. Affect Positive affect

Numerous studies show that happy individuals are successful across multiple life domains, including marriage, friendship, income, work performance, and health because of positive emotions (Diener, King, & Lyubomirsky, 2005). The researchers suggested that happiness is linked to success not only because success breeds happiness, but also because positive affect causes success (Diener, 2005). This study implies that success of happy people rests on 2 factors; one is that because happy people frequently experience positive emotions (positive affect), which makes them more likely to strive towards new goals while experiencing those emotions.

Second is that people possesses skills and resources, which they have developed in the past while experiencing positive emotions. This study implies that positive affect is a factor for a person’s subjective well-being (happiness) which leads to the success of the person. In a study of Myers (2000), predictors of subjective well-being are revealed, which all involves positive emotions. Ed Diener (as cited in Myers, 2000) measured the subjective well-being of over 1. 1 million people over 45 nations through administering a survey.

Results revealed that people who reported that they are happy seemed to look happy to their family members and close friends. The result of their daily mood ratings revealed positive emotions as well. However, positive thinking is more stable overtime and holds stronger relations with a variety of other indicators of well-being when compared to life satisfaction, self-esteem, and optimism (Caprara & Steca, 2004, as cited in Caprara & Steca 2005). In the work of Bradburn (as cited in Caprara & Steca, 2005), the dominance of positive emotional experiences over negative ones was stated as a core dimension of subjective well-being. Later studies led to the suggestion that positive and negative affect are independent dimensions.

As they are experienced in different life situations, the distinction between positive and negative affect are ought to be affective components of subjective well-being (Diener, 2000; Diener & Emmons, 1984; Diener, Smith, & Fujita, 1995; Diener, Suh, Lucas, & Smith, 1999; Zevon & Tellegen, 1982, as cited in Diener & Steca, 2005) Positive emotions signify that life is going well, the person’s goals are being met, and resources are adequate (Clore, Wyer, Dienes, Gasper, & Isbell, 2001).

Positive emotions produce the tendency to approach rather than to avoid and to prepare the individual to seek out and undertake new goals. In this journal research evidence supports the notion that it is the amount of time that people experience positive affect that defines happiness. They also identify happy individuals as those who experience high average levels of positive affect.

In summary, their review of the cross-sectional empirical literature suggests that happiness is positively correlated. Their examination of the cross-sectional correlational literature thus far suggests that high subjective well-being is related to positive outcomes in many areas of life, which is brought by positive affect. Negative Affect In the article “Happiness and Stereotypic Thinking in Social Judgment”, the role of happiness and stereotyping in students’ perceptions and judgments and how either negative or positive emotions affect someone’s judgments are examined.

The article hypothesized that if people felt happy, the tendency would be that the judgment would be positive, and when a person’s mood is angry or sad the reaction would be negative. In this study, the participants were 94 undergraduate students (21 men and 73 women). At first the experimenter explained about recalling their happy memories to set their mood and after that they were asked to read a case.

After that, they were asked to respond prior to reading it. The results yielded that person who have negative mood response into the case more stereotypic comparable to the happy subjects in the present experiments. These findings collectively suggest that previous views about the connections between affect and stereotyping have been proven. We, as the researchers conclude that if people have negative feelings (sadness, anger or depression) the tendency is that they may respond to an object or situation negatively contrasting to the person who has positive affect.

People who have a feeling that they’re losing living their life or life is pretty hard for them feel negative emotions such as anxiety, sadness, anger, depression, or guilt etc. These affects made them feel that they’re not living their life worthy and contended. This article entitled “Origins and Functions of Positive and Negative Affect: A Control-Process View” differentiated both affect as either positive or negative. But we the researchers would like to focus more on the negative affect. It was said that, when situations are unfavorable, people have negative feelings—anxiety, dysphoria, or despair (Carver ; Scheier, 1990).

That people who are in bad mood tend to view life negatively and being in a bad mood makes people see things negatively as well. Method Item Selection and Construction In constructing the Filipino Youth Subjective Well-Being Scale, the researchers had come up with two dimensions: life satisfaction and affect (positive, negative). Each sub factor consist 20 questions. The researchers gathered data from supporting journals on constructing each item. After constructing the items, the researchers had it evaluated by a professional.

After the evaluation, the researchers constructed the items into a questionnaire. Data gathering The researchers administered the test online to 100 participants and a hard copy of the test to another 100 participants, totaling to 200 participants with a mean age of 19. 12. The participants came from different schools such as Miriam College, St. Paul University, University of the East, T. I. P, La Consolacion College, Far Eastern University, San Beda College, Centro Escolar University, ISCHAM, Polytechnic University of the Philippines and University of the Philippines.

Reconstruction after the civil war

After much trial and tribulation that our exasperated country has faced, we all still gather here today in order to follow a long tradition of George Washington, a founding father and cherished president who gave and set precedent to all the new leaders who soon will follow the same path of presidency. A path followed by great accomplishments of the Grant administration, has helped to set a rolling future for the united States and now we will Improve upon the Grant administration using It as a stepping stone to once again unite the country.

Now that the sure wind of war thin our country has prevailed we must continue to rebuild upon the accomplishments of the Grant Administration. We must rebuild within our trust with other human beings and rebuild within the large battered roads of this nation. Though much has been done in the last presidency, there is still ton more to accomplish. Likewise the efforts of before have helped me gain a foot on the task to better our united nation. Looking back the last few years, already have we recovered from the tribulation of Civil War.

We have started the healing process between the different races that were pitted against each other but now stand as brothers. The recent Call Rights Acts and the passing of the 1 5th Amendment have helped to guarantee and ensure the equal Civil Rights that all men will share and all able to be comprised under the glorious Constitution. Yet throughout the years we have also placed ourselves in the continued process of reconstruction in which we have rid the terrors of extremists groups but also have accomplished the first steps of reunion with the Southern states.

Likewise, these efforts to heal the previous tension have been done to almost a full recovery. Many former rebels have been pardoned and owe the first steps to a unified country have put under way by the removal of many federal soldiers. The vanquishing of the post war tensions has been successful but now we must continue and move forward. The reality is that all races much make the effort to live harmoniously with sympathy and empathy through the eyes of each individual.

And through the government will the Constitutional rights of all men be upheld as shall the eradication of prejudice of others In order to keep this nation prosperous. In order to end the final lasting tensions of this era, we will make sure to eve the well waited autonomy of the last few southern states. We will make sure to relieve them of the pressure that federal troops have brought in the states of Louisiana and South Carolina. Through this progress we must also put in an investment to Americas’ future in education.

With support of the government it will be a priority to make sure education is available to everyone, for with this we can move forward and develop a bright future through the youth at the moment. Universal education and improvements in the intellectual and moral conductivity is the root to all prosperity. The interest to better society Is In equality of both colored and white people, for the perseverance of everyone Is needed to make these new Improvements In equality and education. This Is How Social Media (Really) Works in the Trenches

Last year, my Instagram account blew up, to put it mildly. It grew from zero to 100,000 followers in less than six months.

I attribute a lot of my recent successes —  growing , getting a major book deal, acquiring  — to the rapid surge in relevance that came from growing my Instagram account. Here’s how all that growth really happened, and what it did both short and long term for my business.

How I (really) grew the account.

My good friend Nathan from  is a master at organic growth who taught me all about the Instaworld. Sitting in my underwear in my living room, I used his strategies to grow the #Rich20Something account to about 40,000 followers in a few months — for free. What I’ve never mentioned publicly before is that I then paid a considerable amount of money on influencers to fuel that growth from 40k to 100k+ followers.

Here’s how it worked:

I already had a successful , which I’d been selling to the tune of multiple six-figures per year. On my Instagram account, I used “Call to Action” bio link posts to build my email list, then sent those people through my automated system that pitched my course.

Recognize these? They work!

I took those earnings and spent a percentage of them on “shout outs” from influencers to grow more quickly and multiply the effect. How much did I spend?

I haven’t looked at the numbers, but I’m guessing I spent at least $30,000 and maybe $40,000 growing the account over 12 months. In turn, that investment multiplied more than 20x’d it’s value. That’s a unicorn, if I’ve ever heard of one. And a much better strategy than Facebook ads.

The reason I don’t talk about this is simple.

If I mention that I spent a considerable amount of money growing my social media accounts, it will immediately become a barrier for beginners, because they’ll assume you can’t grow an account without money. Some will even accuse me of being disingenuous, a fake or a liar.

This is beyond annoying, and it’s also beside the point. In social media, money is only part of the equation. It’s gas on the flame, but first you have to ignite the flame.

Empowerment implies awareness.

If you want to play the social media growth game, you need to be aware that 99 percent of “instafamous” overnight success is backed by money. Often, serious money. This isn’t a barrier to you succeeding. But it is a reality to take into account. So how do you overcome the “money gap” on social media and get noticed?

Rule #1: Message over medium.   

The platforms we communicate on will continue to change. That much is clear. There will always be a new app to share content.

Sometimes the medium is 10-second video bites. Sometimes the medium is a 2,500 word essay. Sometimes it’s a streaming broadcast.

There’s always another way to show, say or demonstrate what you’re feeling. But the feelings themselves will never change. We all feel joy, pain, happiness, sadness, confusion, elation, worry, doubt, amusement, lethargy and everything in between. These concepts are fundamentally human and universally recognizable.

Your job is to find one platform that really matches with your personality and production style, then use it to communicate those universal emotions at an expert level.

Some people like to write. That’s me. Some people like to draw. Some people like to make videos. Any type of hack or “gasoline” to accelerate growth — whether it’s taking a course or spending marketing dollars — is secondary to the fundamental purpose of social media: genuine connection.

Rule #2: Create a ton of content.

I’ve talked about this ad nauseum. You’re going to have to make a lot of content to stand out. Period.

You will be competing with other viral organic content, plus paid content, so your best bet is to create enough high-quality work to increase the odds of being seen by the right audience. The definition of “quality work” varies depending on the platform, but always be aiming to improve in the delivery and presentation of what you’re putting out there.

If you’re focusing on Instagram, then really study the aesthetics that are working well in your niche and try to be better than your competitors.

If you’re shooting YouTube videos, try to get the best picture and sound you can with the equipment you have, and at the very least have really intriguing thumbnail pictures and good keywords.

If you’re writing, you better be writing every day so that you get good at it. Don’t put mediocre work out there and wonder why it’s not getting picked up by TIME. It doesn’t have to be good at first, but you have to try hard to get better. And if you can’t create a masterpiece, at least create something that’s honest.

Eventually, you can turn up the production and start creating pieces of high quality work across multiple platforms every day. But in the beginning, stick to one or two platforms that you’re most comfortable with.

Don’t stand in your own way, either. Just get it out there.

In a world full of avatars, there are ways to automate your social media presence so that you’re posting 24/7. Don’t do this. If you automate your avatar in the social space, you lose touch with the pulse of what people are going through. You won’t connect with them in a memorable way.

I try my best to thank almost every single person who comes into contact with my work. I go out of my way to find things my supporters and fans are doing. I find things I can comment on, contribute to or help with. I’m not just a talking head. I treat everyone like a close friend.

This is not scalable, and precisely because of that, it’s not copyable. Nobody can jack that swag or automate it. It automatically stands out because it’s just real.

Be that.

When you actually respond to people, you’ll build loyalty over time that’s unshakeable.

Most of us expect our comments, like and shares to go unanswered into internet oblivion. When we actually get feedback from the creator of the content we just interacted with, it creates a special dialogue. If I comment on your post and you respond to me, I’m going to feel like I got a reward out of commenting on your post. That means I’m going to be more likely to comment again. If you keep reinforcing that tendency, I’ll keep commenting.  

After months of continuing to respond to people, you’ll begin to develop a group of 50-100 “regulars” who you can count on to like, comment and share every post. That’s built-in social proof with everything that you do.

More shares. More reach every time. Just because you actually responded to people.

Human Nature In Literature

Nature is something that encompasses a wide range of human behaviors, for it is thought that is ruled by nature. Tendency for action is also said live under the dominion of human nature. Whether the action is positive or negative depends on the state of mind of the being, as well as the inner nature of the heart. Monstrosity lives within each person, morals however, create an internal struggle between two opposing forces. One hand is the behavior that is known to be wrong, and is looked upon as monstrous, and on the other there is what is known (based on personal belief system) to be wrong.

The results of this conflict is dependent upon the rounding world. Specifically relating to the ideas presented by the playwright and philosopher Aristotle, in his work titled The Poetics, as well as the world illustrated in one essay of a collection titled The Anatomy Of Criticism by Northrop Frye. Clinical a major character in Shakespearean play The Tempest represents the internal struggle humans confront daily, as well as the way basic nature and environment shape behavior and thought patterns.

Tragic are the lives of humans, struggling to get by. Lives our finite, making each second of every life valuable to the nth degree. Minimization of life and happiness is achieved by accomplishing self set goals, studying the beauty of the substantial world, as well as the beauty created by humans. The sequencing of these events must be in a logical order, meaning the beginning does not have to follow any action, but all consequential unveiling of the plot should evoke some thought like “Ah that makes sense. ” This does not mean the plot must be predictable, Just sensible when viewed macroscopically. (Aristotle 632) Imitation of action, as well as the consequences of said action, is the ultimate goal of tragedy. For in the action lies the essential beauty that the artist is trying to capture, human emotion. “Tragedy is essentially an imitation not of persons but of action and life, of happiness and misery.

All human happiness or misery takes the form of action. ” (Aristotle 632) Day to day it is the “action” of our lives that produces sadness or happiness, getting a promotion produces feelings of Joy in a human of any nature, the underlying term being success, to imitate success should produce Joy in the spectators. Vice versa for the imitation of actions regarded with negative emotion. Slavery, an extinct practice, is not a situation easily comprehended by the modern person. What is relatable however, is the emotion propagated under the oppressive The Tempest By mammary atmosphere to a servant to master relationship.

Slavery is wrong, therefore pitied should be the one called slave. According to Aristotle however, it is impossible to evoke the true emotion in the audience, Clinical is presented in a state of slavery, the process from inning to slave occurred outside of the happenings on stage. “it does not appeal either to the human feelings in us, or to our pity, or to our fears. ” Shakespeare creates action outside of the play, with which is unrepeatable to the audience.

Upon learning that Clinical was enslaved because of the attempted rape upon Prospered daughter Miranda, however this discoveries holds no sway to the audience, rather it is a seasonal progression to the understanding of the current situation. While Shakespearean approach does not follow Aristotle convent, the development is still seasonal. (1. 2. 12-418) The crossroads 4 presented here is whether to feel for Scallion’s state, or to applaud Prosper as the savior, for it was he alone who entrapped this beast. Shakespeare meant for this to be a difficult decision, he evinces to us in the offstage action the theme of restoration.

Never permitted to forget the bestial potential of Clinical and his ambiguous nature, however, it is forcefully shown his ability to act with kindness, to act in a human manner. Parallel to the way Prospered humanity is forced into the scene, before Prosper was a master to Clinical, he was a mentor to the beast. (Manner) The alright is contrasting between a beast who can act humane and a human driven to impose the degradation of slavery upon another. Without argument Clinical has been the root of his own succession on the island, with the attempted rape it was ceded that his movements must not be of his own will.

The action rooted from a want, or better put, urge. Humans control their urges by weighing the consequence of enacting said urge, Clinical has lived on the island for an undetermined number of years with only the company of Accords. Clinical is the incarnate of human desire, without the deep rooted sense of morality, more inclined to act on his urges. The attempted rape was not malicious in nature, (through the eyes of Clinical at least) but it served to satiate his lust. The punishment imposed by Prosper is undeniably outrageous from Scallion’s viewpoint.

Speaking only on Scallion’s look on the situation it can be parallel to being enslaved and tortured for taking an apple from a tree in order to satiate hunger. Robert West firmly believes in the symbolism of each character, he states “The Tempest is the poignancy of man’s insubstantial pageant of 5 human happiness… Against the shadow of mortality. (Shakespeare For Students 14) Nothing truer could be stated, Clinical is imprisoned due to a lack of moral understanding, there is however an aspect of goodness, Clinical is Just as a child learning from his environment.

Under the dominion of Prosper he is treated as beast, therefore assumes to be nothing but a monster. “His spirits hear me… Sometimes am I all wound with adders, who with cloven tongues do hiss me into madness. Lo, now, 10! Here comes a spirit of his to torment me. ” (2. 2. 3-16) Clinical lives under a constant dominion of fear, the prospect of torture is right around the ornery, this is where the audience begins to feel true pity for Clinical and his existential situation. Consider this, a child always adopts the accent of it’s peers, not from the parents.

This holds true for all children, Clinical could be regarded as a “wild baby’ that is trying to learn about the world and fit into society in some way. In order to fit in and understand society it is necessary to socialize, to define socializing it is the ability to uphold similar or the same morals as the specified society. (Harris 9) Clinical was in mid process of this process, even coming far as learning Prospered poke language, his affinity for beauty is existent without doubt. As humans parade about with different accepted attitudes in different environments Clinical does the same.

When confronted with the a human far from the likes of his odious master a different side of Clinical emerges, one which appreciates beauty in a profound and meaningful way. ” I private, let me bring thee where crabs grow, 6 And I with my long nails will dig thee pigpens, Show thee a Jays nest, and instruct thee how To snare the nimblest marmoset. Wilt thou go with me? ” (2. 2. 173-178) Clinical wants to live free, he wants share the beauty of this island, wicked by nature no he is not.

However unwished he is the existence of his lust for desire is strong, his mind is one unable to combat the moral struggle of desire and moral. Introduced into a positive society however has produced within Clinical a temperament of benevolence. In a tragic world the hero is undermined by his one great flaw, however much Shakespearean play adheres to the rules of a tragic world it is of another nature. Comedy is very similar to tragedy, the key differences are as follows. In a comedy there is absurdity, the world starts off by introducing this absurd figure, or law which opposes our the main characters want or need.

This old world must fall, in order for a new one to hold. This is called the crystallization moment. Once the new society is crystallized a theme of inclusion is at hand. (Frye) As everyone goes their separate ways in Joy the story of The Tempest is concluded with all members of the old world at peace. Should this have been a tragedy, Scallion’s role would have Shiites to something alien trot what was seen in the comic world . Due to the tact hat his monstrous action led to the crystallizing point, in a tragic world Clinical would have been the center of all pity, perhaps even the tragic hero.

William Faulkner’s Barn Burning & It’s Socio-Economic Levels

Johany Hernandez Professor Gray ENC 1102 October 12, 2011 Life’s Own Food Chain William Faulkner’s “Barn Burning” depicts socio-economic levels of the post Civil War rural South. Social class and economic worth is a major theme throughout the story. It displays a hierarchy of different financial level that is used to portray different socio-economic standpoints among groups. At the very bottom of the social structure are Sarty and his family. On the following level, there is the de Spain’s Negro servant. Afterwards, is Mr. Harris. At the top of the ladder are Major de Spain and his wife, Lula de Spain.

All of these characters represent the differences among the socio-economic groups, and how they intertwine with each other in the community. At the bottom of the rank are Sarty and his family. They are farmers who work on others’ plantations because they cannot afford to have their own. They are definitely an uneducated group of individuals. This can be seen when Sarty is speaking: ‘He won’t git no ten bushels neither. He won’t git one. ’ Another good example would be their clothing. Sarty’s sisters are “…in a flutter of cheap ribbons. The family’s clothes consist of “an incredible expanse of pale clothes and a flutter of tawdry ribbons. ” Moreover, Abner Snopes is depicted as someone who does not desire change, even for the betterment of his family. The father walks “stiffly from where a Confederate provost’s man’s musket ball had taken him in the heel on a stolen horse thirty years ago. ” He also seems to wear the same black coat constantly. Above Sarty in the hierarchy structure is the de Spain’s servant. The Negro is being described as “…an old man with neat grizzled hair, in a linen jacket. His living in the de Spain’s mansion shows that he is of higher status than the Snopes family. He lives very comfortably in the manor. The fact that he is wearing a linen jacket illustrates that he is exceptionally well taken care of. Though still a servant, he is presumably higher in the hierarchy of the social ladder. The servant is still very well underneath the hierarchy because he is uneducated. He speaks similarly to the Snopes. An instance is: ‘Wipe yo foots, white man, fo you come in here. Major ain’t home nohow. ’ The next character, who is placed above the servant, is Mr.

Harris. Though not much is said about who he is, the story portrays him as a landowner. The Snopes’ worked on his farm for a short-term period, which eventually ended in his barn burning. With the bit of information on Mr. Harris, it can be said that he is almost certainly above middle-class. Mr. Harris says ‘The next time I put the hog in my pen. When he came to get it I gave him enough wire to patch up his pen. ’ Examples are that he owns a farm, and a cornfield. Also, that he is able to employ Mr. Snopes and his family as tenant farmers to work on his land.

At the top of the hierarchy is a very rich man, Major de Spain and his wife, Lula de Spain. It is very apparent that they are more than wealthy by the description of the home’s surroundings. “…the grove of oak trees and cedars and the other flowering trees and shrubs where the house would be, though not the house yet. They walked beside a fence massed with honeysuckle and Cherokee roses and came to a gate swinging open to between two brick pillars… he saw the house…” Also, the home itself was grand and white. Sarty thinks ‘Hit’s big as a courthouse. ’ Inside the house, even Sarty is flabbergasted by how beautiful it is.

The narrator describes it as “…deluged as though by a warm wave by a suave turn of carpeted stair and a pendant glitter of chandeliers and a mute gleam of gold frames…” A very important example of social reign is that Mr. and Mrs. De Spain speak grammatically correct. This alone shows more class as opposed to Sarty and the servant. Throughout the story, the socio-economic classes clash against one another because of social troubles, or economic harms. Sarty and his family, who portrays the lowest of the low show how their family live day by day without reassurance of the future.

The servant–clean cut and more well-mannered than the Snopes’, serves the de Spains’, and ultimately somewhat bathes a bit in their riches. Mr. Harris, a minor character, yet the obvious next personality in the hierarchy, is a stable, above middle-class man who though does not own a mansion, is very well off. This now leaves Mr. and Mrs. De Spain, the ones who are not only rich, but exceed the social class norms among the other characters. They are at the top of the food chain—rich, intelligent and very powerful. The lives of these characters help understand the inner-workings of society and its inhabitants.

The Deadly Happiness of Mrs,. Mallard

Modes of Analysis Character Analysis on Story Of An Hour The Story of an Hour is short story in which many things happened during that hour. With in an hour the main character Mrs. Mallard experience emotions that she never felt before in her life. During the process of the story we begin to see a character that is weak sick and summited to society regiment. At the moment of the unexpected, Mrs. Mallard showed a different aspect of herself. We tend to react in the different prospective ways when an unexpected event happens.

We tend to have a close look at our real selves. The Story of An Hour by Kate Chopin reflects the dramatic process of Mrs. Mallard’s character through the death of her husband. It also demonstrates that the true identity cannot be sheltered forever. Mrs. Mallard character had a distinctive personality. A woman who summited her self to the mental abuse of her husband and she became sick from all the hurting she kept inside (227). She remains quiet during her life not allowing anyone to know her deepest thoughts. She was not free to do as she wanted. Mrs.

Mallard had the desire of getting in touch with the world outside and to be able to speak when ever she wanted to. The detail I am interested in the most is the reaction of Mrs. Mallard toward the saying “Free Body and Soul free! ”(228). It is not easy to understand her reaction. I think that reaction is the result of her inside conflict in which she hesitates about how to determine her own feelings. She doesn’t know how to react, she should feel sorry about the death news, but she feels happy about freedom (228). At the beginning, when I saw her reaction about the news of her husband death, I began to analyze the character.

At the beginning of the story, I saw a cold hearted character, as I continue reading; it became cleared to me that Kate Chopin was trying to send a message through her story. In the beginning of the 19th century, this reaction was unacceptable in society. However through the modern readers’ eyes; her reaction is the explosion of her true feelings which were repressed for a long time. During the time line in which the story was based on, a wife had to be subservient to her husband and her life was confined to the house. Women in those days were not permitted to divorce; the only way they would acquire liberty was by becoming widows.

A traditional role like that, makes Mrs. Mallard consider her marriage as a burden and she feels free when she gets to know about her husband’s death. That’s the reason Mrs. Mallard became joyful when she heard the news of her husbands death. I think that she felt overwhelmed with her everyday life of a servant, with complete dependence on Brently his decisions and maybe his dominance. To me it seems that the character of Mrs. Mallard is a person who is disappointed with the harsh reality of her everyday living, and that she is also subconsciously looking for a chance to escape from an unhappy marriage.

She loved her husband and sincerely cried for him when she hears of his death, but at the same time she is happy to acquire her freedom again(228). Through Mrs. Mallard reaction, I can see that she suffers a lot from her married life. Mrs. Mallard tries to use her will to beat the feeling of freedom and the desire for independence, but her will loses, and her true feeling takes control over her thinking. As a result, her reaction is different from what is usual and expected. Her exclamation of freedom impact the readers, because of the unexpected reaction of Mrs.

Mallard, by Chopin allowing this expression in the story it helps the reader understand the inside struggle of her own life. Mrs. Mallard is a vivid character that identifies the life of Chopin. It indicates her private needs, emotion and expectations which she kept inside. Chopin lived in an era where women were not heard. Personally, I think that the saying free is the reaction that expresses the feelings about society condemnatory ways to women. To Mrs. Mallard it is like a prison having to be under the oppression of her husband authority.

She had lived under the control of her husband, with little identity and time of her own. Maybe to under his imposed private will it was confusing for her ability to identify herself. The expression in the reaction helps the reader identify more strongly with her need for individuality. I also can identify with Mrs. Mallard with myself: she is a lady who sacrifices herself for her husband. Her reaction shows that despite a lot of suffering, she is willing to maintain the wife role the last moment. She only dares to let her true feeling pour out after she hears of his death and in a place away from public view, in her room (228).

Her saying tells me that in her life she has never experienced such a moment of great joy, happiness and excitement like this. Later on in the story, she received the disappointment of her life when she learns her husband was alive. That brought her to her death which in another way she became free of her oppression (228). When I read this story for the first time, it seemed to be a story of many unpredictable details. To me, the story is still highly appreciated until strict social bias and peoples expectations about gender roles in general and marriage in particular are denied completely.
