It’s a longstanding fight in the U.S., whether people can opt out of vaccination if that means jeopardizing the greater public’s health. In this episode, we look back at a 1905 Supreme Court case that set a precedent for whether or not the state can enforce compulsory vaccinations.
After listening to the NPR segment …. Please offer your thoughts on the following questions :
- What did the Supreme Court case of Jacobson v. Massachusetts in 1905 conclude about about the authority of states and compulsory vaccination laws ? (Be sure to include a brief history of the issue behind the case.)
- For the overall good of public health, did the Supreme Court make the correct decision ? (Briefly explain)
- If a vaccination for the Covid-19 virus becomes available soon, should the public health departments of each state force the public to be vaccinated against this virus ? … Hint: … What does the historical record say about this ?
- Why does this historical knowledge matter ?
