Background Information

Careful employee selection is important for several reasons. Your own performance always depends on your employees. Because of the high cost of hiring employees, it is important to hire the right person from the beginning and ensure a fair selection process (Human Resource Management, 2016).

Several types of tests can be given to gauge knowledge, skills, abilities and other characterstics(KSAO’s) in relation to other applicants. A cognitive ability test will determine reasoning skills, math skills, and verbal skills. An aptitude test rates a person’s ability to learn new skills, while an achievement test determines current knowledge (Human Resource Management, 2016). While testing is important, a background check is also necessary as part of the screening process for new employees.

1. Review the rubric to make sure you understand the criteria for earning your grade.
2. Review Chapter 4:Recruitment, Chapter 5: The Interview and the article Job Analysis
3. Navigate to the threaded discussion below and respond to the following:
   1. Design an employee selection process for hiring stock traders. We already know what to look for as far as technical skills are concerned—accounting courses, economics, and so on. What we want is a program for screening out potential bad apples.
   2. To that end, please let us know the following: What screening test(s) would you suggest, and why? What questions should we add to our application form? Specifically, how should we check candidates’ backgrounds, and what questions should we ask previous employers and references?
   3. What else (if anything) would you suggest?
4. Your initial post is due by the end of the fourth day of the workshop.
5. The initial posting is to be 200-300 words in length and supported by at least two sources properly cited and referenced: (a) the Human Resource Management textbook, and (b) an academic journal article obtained through OCLS.
6. Read and respond to at least two of your classmates’ postings by end of the workshop. Your feedback is to be substantive in nature by evidencing critical thinking.
7. Each response should be 200-300 words in length and include at least the following two sources properly cited and referenced: (a) the Human Resource Management textbook, and (b) an academic journal article obtained through OCLS.
