Ñomparing Several Poems

I will compare A Women to Her Lover by Christina Walsh, How Do I Love Thee? By Elizabeth Barrett Browning, When We Two Parted by Lord Byron, Remember by Christina Rossetti and Villegiature by Edith Nesbit. The poems I have chosen, four are written by women and one by a man and I think that this is a representative romance as women are more romantic. The only man I have chosen is Lord Byron. There is a common theme in these poems which is the theme of love. In two of the other poems I have chosen Villigiature and A Woman To Her Lover the theme of love is related to powerful and equal love.

I think that Remember and How Do I Love Thee? are representatives of the Romantic movement because they stimulate many aspects of the theme of love and the poets do this by showing their love through the poems and I think that A Women to Her Lover, When We Two Parted and Villegiature are not representative of what we believe to be typical of the Romantic movement as they write with very bitter words in their poems which could hardly be romantic in the most common sense.

The first two I will compare is A Woman to her lover and “How Do I Love Thee? and “A Woman to Her Lover”. This is about a woman who is fighting with her lover telling him that she is not a slave and she will not sit in the house all day looking after his children. She gives ultimatums to the man. She does not want him to expect her to be “a wingless angel who can do no wrong”, i. e. the ‘perfect wife’ who’s place is in the home. At the end of the poem she says “But lover, if you ask of me/That I shall be your comrade, friend, and mate”. This shows that the woman is ready to love him and be loved but on a very equal footing.

A very modern perception and not one attached to typical romantic writings “How do I Love Thee? ” is about the feelings that a woman has about her lover; assuming that this poem was written for Robert Browning, her husband, the poet is almost treating him like a God. “For ends of Being and ideal Grace”. She talks mostly about God. Christina Walsh in “A Woman To Her Lover” also talks about God at the end of her poem “Until we reach the very heart of God” however she wants her lover to be passionate about love and through that passion they would reach ultimate heights together.

She is asking for equality but Elizabeth Barratt Browning just talks about how she worships her husband. “A Woman To Her Lover” is a non-reflective poem, portraying a female perspective of love. The moment we read the title of the poem, we think of the word ‘lover’ as portraying equality with relationship; the woman is talking to her lover whereas in most romantic themes, women are either talked about or to. “How Do I Love Thee? ” is also portraying a female perspective of love however this time it is towards her husband. This poem has deep love from the wife without rational reasoning.

It is the opposite of “A Woman To Her Lover”. “How do I Love Thee? ” shows the male as the dominant and she worships her husband, Robert Browning unlike Christina Walsh’s message who put across is that women should be equal to men, which could be seen as shocking for its historical context. Other implications of this are the relation of ‘lover’ to cohabitation, which is becoming increasingly common in this day and age.

This highlights the key theme of the poem, whereby she is getting her message across of demanding equality in a relationship; ‘No servant will I be If that be what you ask, O lover I refuse you! in the first stanza, emotions are strongly evident but very different from the romantic period. She introduces ‘conditional love’ and as a result, she is demanding equal rights. Alongside this, ‘physical love’ is also suggested. The word ‘lover’ tends to bring out the physical aspect of the theme; there is a sense of passion, however there is no reference to marriage where a man had rights over his “woman’s” body. She quotes: ‘my body supple only for your sense delight,/Oh shame, and pity and abasement’. This brings out her bold and daring nature.

She uses words like “comrade”, “friend” and “passion”, which put across a completely different tone, showing her more demanding side to the relationship. ‘Woman of our time’ Following that, ‘hand holding hand’ also is written without gendering to imply belief of equality in a relationship. There is also less evidence of a male dominance in the relationship but in “How Do I Love Thee? ” I think that the male is more dominant because Elizabeth Barratt Browning “falls to her feet” in the poem. The poem “A Woman To Her Lover” is written in free verse but “How Do I Love Thee? ” is in a sonnet form.

The structure of “A Woman To Her Lover” reflects the narrator’s tone, as she is determinedly commanding freedom and equality, without being restricted by the social constrictions of her time, whereby the norm was that of a male dominated relationship. The sophisticated writing shows traditional contrast to the seemingly modern topic. Her long syntax causes an empowering tone whereby we can tell she is fixed in what she wants. Her strong character is amplified by her use of powerful language, for instance, words like “bend”, “bondslave” and “drudgery”, show her fearless character and also how strongly she wants equality.

She alliterates these words in ‘bondslave to bear’. The structure of her syntaxes also conveys a sense of resolution, for example she confidently uses caesuras: ‘Go! – I am no doll’. This also portrays a conditional balance since it is a direct answer to the solution she aims for. Walsh also uses a lot of figurative imagery; and these different types of imagery help amplify the effects the power that love can have on people. Such as use of personification in the last stanza: ‘our co-equal love will make the stars laugh with joy’.

Also the words “stars” and “spheres” suggest how love with equality exceeding other characteristics of love. Only in the last stanza we see her address her lover as ‘husband’, whereby we immediately sense the change of tone, with greater respect towards the one she is addressing. The last line of this stanza consists of the terminology fields of religion, which she portrays by use of divine imagery, as she ends the poem with an overjoyed height of happiness: ‘until we reach the very heart of God’. There was a frequent reference to religion in the romantic period context.

This shows the nature of the narrator is very believing. She believes in: herself, God, and the way she is treated by her lover can change, despite her social environment. However, on the other hand, Browning is worshipping her husband and she is willing to do anything for her. Browning lived in a society that was dominated by men, this effected her writing a lot. In the poem “How Do I Love Thee? ” she compares her love to one thing or another “I love thee with the passion put to use”, she is comparing her love to intensity equal to that experienced during the day.

She also refers to the death of her mother and her brothers, “In my old griefs” her “old greifs are her mother dying then her brothers.. Villegiature by Edith Nesbit gives the impression that she’s lost interest in her husband, telling us that he “bores me” and she dreams of a romantic love, and one that she indulged herself in with a fling whilst she was away from home. The poem starts with a light-hearted and peaceful mood but the poem “Remember” has a sad and melancholy tone to it.

The speaker in “Villegiature” wants a stereotype, but she wants one that is found more in literature and poetry than in real life whilst the speaker in “Remember” wants the love of her life to remember her when she dies. Nesbit uses romantic clichi??s to say that she wants a man who will treat her more lovingly; she alludes to Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet because Romeo has the quality she is looking for. The man in her life is far from what she wants; she illustrates him sitting at a desk “deep in dull books,” using alliteration to show how repetitive and drab the man is.

This poem deals with stereotype of realistic men. In the poem “Remember”, from the starting stanza which quotes ‘Remember me when I am gone away’, implies a loving, yet sad, request. One of the aspects of the theme of love evident in this noble sonnet is ‘imperfect love’. This idea is based on the frequently used theme of religion in her work, since Rossetti was devoted to her Christian faith and love of God. At the end of the poem she says “Better by far that you should forget and smile/Then that you should remember and be sad”.

Here she is telling her lover that she rather him forget her and be happy and live his life then to be sad. There is a notion that death is about to tear them apart however this is not immediately clear, since it is vague as to whether she is choosing to leave the person she is addressing, or dying. Death is never named, but is alluded to in the opening lines through the distant, ‘silent land’, although we are left uninformed of how much time she has left. This highlights the theme of a parting in love: absence.

Villegiature” can also be compared to “When We Two Parted” by Lord Byron because they are both in a way, harsh towards their lover. Byron uses imagery to describe the “morning dew” and how it reminds him of the “shame” he is in. His tone is shameful and his conscience is already getting to him. He portrays her as cold “pale grew they cheeks and cold,/ colder thy kiss”. He begins with this description of her at their separation; his description of her begins with the physical mention of her cheeks.

This beginning admits the foreshadowing of continued sorrow throughout the poem when the speaker says “truly that hour foretold/ sorrow in this. ” This gives a negative connotation to the word “you” from the very beginning. How they all 3 compare! Loss. These poems all have the theme of loss. In the poem “When We Two Parted”, Byron loses his lover and he is hurt by that “Long, long shall I rue thee,/ Too deeply to tell”. In Villegiature Nesbit has lost interest in her husband and has a fling with another person “Your solid self, long leagues away,/ Deep in dull books, had hardly missed me”.

In “Remember”, Rossetti refers to death and dying and she is telling her lover to move on after she dies “Remember me when I am gone away,/ Gone far into the silent land”. All of these poems have a continual theme of love however, love is not the same; there is a demand for equal love “To live and work, to love and die with you”, a worshiping and devoted love “I love thee with the passion put to use”, a time to move on “Remember me when I am gone away”, a reminiscing of better time “I watched the still and dewy lawn”, and a loss of love “A shudder comes o’er me/ Why wert thou so dear? . The poems “Remember, When We Two Parted”, and “Villegiature” are all poems about loss and reminiscence but the poems “A Woman To Her Lover” and “How Do I Love Thee? ” are about love with a positive outlook. “A Woman To Her Lover” has the theme of a powerful and equal love but in “How Do I Love Thee? ” there is strong passion and deep love for the lover and he is almost venerated as a God. “Remember” deals with the theme of pain, life and joy for the past but “Villegiature” has a different theme of reminiscence of a distant time when the poet was having a better time.

Passion Is Both Imprisoning and Liberating

Analyses the emotional changes of Jed and How does he Imprison Joe’ One of the major characters in the novel is Jed Parry, one of the main male leads. Jed is a harsh Christian, to put it kindly “Please leave your message after the beat. And the may the Lord be with you”. After the ballooning Incident, he develops a voracious obsession with Joe Rose, who we know has a wife; Claries. Jed doesn’t seem like the violent type, though the power of his obsession Is Itself a kind of violence.

He ascribes his love for Joe In his various letters and phone messages, as something dictated by God. He sees himself, as the result of Joey’s escape. The tension here is a slight variation of that between Joe and Claries. It revolves around the battle between science and faith. Throughout the novel, Jed expresses his love and views towards Joe very openly and seems Like the character In which he follows his heart instead of his head. From when Joe receives a phone call from Jed, enquiring when he shall be meeting with IM, he ends his part of the phone call with; “l can come to you. He hesitates while saying this and with no surprise Jed replies with ” No. Tell me where you are. ” The fact that Jed is very versatile and forgiving towards Joe tells us that he is truly in love with him. Jed Is very passionate towards Joe and portrays this deeply; “I don’t know why you’ve chosen me. All I know is that I love you too now, and that there’s a reason for it, a purpose. ” Through this he seems to have put Joe in a very awkward moment. From this he feels and knows that Joe has to react in either a way of horror or agreement.

Joe feels trapped and very imprisoned even though Jed is only expressing his feelings and trying to understand why Joe doesn’t feel the same way. Later on In the novel, Jed starts to (In certain ways) ‘Interrogate’ Joe so he starts to understand exactly how he feels; “look. You don’t have to go about it like this. You could save us both so much misery. ” This back fires as Joe still doesn’t express the truth and his full emotions. Jed continues this ‘act’ as he later on says “What have I done to you?

Why are you keeping this up? ” Joe has Instigated this and feels manipulated and controlled by him. Parry starts to get very affectionate towards Joe Rose, maybe trying to get through to Joe in a different way. He states; “Something passed between us, up there on the hill, after he fell, it was pure energy, pure light? ” He tries to approach Rose in many ways and I believe this is his final attempt to reach Joe. This quote defines the way in which parry express’ love.

He believes this is the true meaning of love and how he feels towards Joe. The fact that Joe Rose Is married doesn’t even cross Parry’s mind even thong en Is very aware AT ten Tact; “l en only way Is Tort ten tenure AT us to talk. ” From this, I think that Parry believes this is all a game; a love triangle in which he believes he van fox but Joe isn’t taking it. By the end of chapter seven Joe finally loses his patience, hails a taxi and leave abruptly when Jed mentions dealing with what he sees as the ‘Claries problem’.

The European Chivalry: the Ideals and Practices

The Ideals and Practices Andrew Daniels Strayed University Abstract This paper focuses on the ideals and practices of chivalry, specifically in the Middle Ages. During this time, a list of Ten Commandments pertaining to chivalry existed. Knights were expected to uphold a certain code that impacted their country, church, king, and fellow man. This paper will elaborate on those individual commandments and explore what each mandate meant for a knight, and it will show how those obligations affected various aspects of their lives.

Also, the paper will touch on heavily In relation to a knight’s demeanor toward a woman, and the rules that were to be followed when engaging in courtly love. Lastly, one will see how some of these ideas have carried into modern day, though they have been altered throughout time. Picture King Arthur, a knight In shining armor, waging war against his former knight Lancelot to prove his love for Guinevere. Most people envision such scenes when they hear the word “chivalry. While dragon-slaying knights and tales of rescuing damsels in distress have contributed to our notion of chivalry, many more unifying aspects make up what it means to be chivalrous. I will be delving into the true meaning behind the principles and what it means to be a knight devoted to the ideals of chivalry. Knights first evolved in the eighth century under the direction of the French ruler Charlemagne; It was from this time that the Idea of chivalry arose. Though the code of chivalry was never formally written, it was understood by all as a way of culture and moral conduct.

During the Middle Ages, knights upheld the ideals and practices delineated in The Code of Chivalry. These values ranged from dedication to the church, to defending the weak and defending your country, and loading yourself to a higher standard by being faithful to your word and respecting others. The unspoken Ten Commandments revealed the duties a knight was to defend. This paper will further expand upon the customs of knights and their chivalric ways. One of the major components of chivalry dealt with protecting the church.

The first commandment stated, “thou shall believe all that the church teaches, and shall observe all its directions” (Marshall, 2002). The second commandment simply stated, “thou shall defend the Church” (Marshall, 2002). In the Middle Ages Christianity in ten Tort AT cottontails was ten only practice religion. I en snuck played a Olsten and dominate role in the majority of people’s lives, not only medieval knights. Beginning as free peasants, knights often pillaged churches. Due to such violence, Rome declared knights the protectors of churches starting in the tenth century and threatening sanctions against any who ransacked churches.

Later, in the 1 lath century, the Truce of God asserted that knights should not make war on all holy days, all saints days or Thursday through Sunday. Abiding to these rules meant that knights exhibited their chivalric duty by observing the churches directions. Not only did the knights protect the church, but the church protected the knights’ estate if he embarked on a Crusade to Jerusalem, the supposed burial sight of Jesus. During his time away, the knight was also exempt from paying taxes to the church (Warrior Challenge, 2003).

While knights were required to defend the church, they were also expected to defend the weak, according to the Code of Chivalry (Marshall, 2002). Knights were expected to protect the weak and innocent. Given a plot of land for their services, rather than monetary compensation, knights were required to oversee the land in order to keep agricultural procedures running smoothly and to ensure the well-being over their serfs. Another knightly duty was to avenge the wronged. This was possible with extensive training from the age of seven to twenty one.

In this fourteen year p, knights learned everything from hunting and falconry to wielding a battle and vaulting on a horse in heavy armor (Martin, 1991). With a repertoire of experiences such as these, knights were surely qualified to shield anyone weaker than them. Moreover, knights “shall love the country in which thou waist born” (Marshall, 2002). Knights upheld this chivalric code by living to serve their king and country. In the eighth century when Charlemagne ruled over his vast empire he enacted many longstanding ideas both in religion and education.

During this period he and his vassals were involved in protecting their borders; without such a charismatic leader knights may not have been so obliged to serve and defend their king and country. In order to exhibit love for his country, the knight was sure to obey the king, country, and Code of Chivalry. The fifth commandment found in the code of chivalry, “thou shall not recoil before thing enemy’ (Marshall, 2002). In a time when battles were common, knights were expected to fight with honor and die with valor. These traits would have been taught to these men when they were squires training to be knights.

However, knights also established principles of what not to do in battle. It was thought chivalrous to never attack an unarmed foe, never use a weapon on an opponent not equal to the attack, and never attack from behind (Marshall, 2002). By maintaining these principles a knight showed respect to themselves, their king and their country. The next commandment reads, “thou shall make war against the Infidel without sensation and without mercy,” which relates to the seventh commandment “thou snail perform scrupulously tiny Teal outlets, IT teen De not contrary to ten laws AT God” (Marshall, 2002).

Certain tasks categorized under these two commandments were thought of as chivalrous. One such task stated that knights were to destroy evil in all of its atrocious forms. Knights were required to fight for the ideals of their king, country and chivalry, which meant annihilating all those that attempted to steal land or rob people within the kingdom’s borders in which a knight resided. Protection of one’s country by destroying the enemy remained a priority for knights, as long as they did not betray any teachings of the church.

Knights also abided by the code, “thou shall never lie, and shall remain faithful to thy pledged word” (Marshall, 2002). It was thought gallant to live a life complete with respect and honor. Knights should not take for granted their freedom or their livelihood, and they must remain thankful for the opportunities provided to them. Of course, if knights kept their word of honor, they must avoid lying or cheating their fellow man. Living an existence abundant of deception would defy the principals hose chivalrous men were to uphold.

Just as it was thought unethical to deceive their fellow man, it was also thought improper to desert a friend or ally in need. Likewise, knights were not to relinquish a noble cause, whether it presented itself in the form of a battle, defending one’s church, or protecting one’s country (Marshall, 2002). By living a truthful, honest existence, knights became role models of suitable gentlemen, which have contributed to our current view of the word chivalry today. Additionally, the code of chivalry demands, “thou shall be generous, and give largesse to everyone” (Marshall, 2002).

Sir Thomas Malory provides a glimpse into such charitable actions as he recounts a scene between King Arthur and Sir Lancelot in his legend El Mortem d’art. After Arthur learns of Lancelot and Gunrunner’s affair, he wages war against Lancet’s kingdom, only to find himself at the mercy of Lancelot and his kinsman, Sir Boors’ sword Not so hardy, said Sir Lancelot, upon pain of thy head, that thou touch him no more, for I will never see that most noble king that made me knight neither slain en shamed.

And therewith Sir Lancelot alighted off his horse and took up the king ND horsed him again, and said thus: My lord Arthur, for God’s love stint this strife, for ye get here no worship, and I would do mine utterance, but always I forbear you, and ye nor none of yours forbear me; my lord, remember what I have done in many places, and now I am evil rewarded (Taylor, 2010, Para. L). Lancelot spares Urethra’s life, remembering when Arthur once placed his faith in Lancelot by making him his knight. Despite the quarrel between the former friends over Guinevere, they still respect one another.

In this instance Lancet’s generosity outweighs his desire to defeat Arthur. Such demonstrations of largesse, whether legend or not, reveal the true meaning behind this commandment. The final commandment documented in the Code of Chivalry states, “thou shall be everywhere and always the champion of the Right and the Good against Injustice an Eve “(Marshall,2 I Nils last commandment Disloyally encapsulates ten tore mentioned orders, reminding knights to live for all that is virtuous and to reinforce the need to respect the authority of country, church and king.

Knights were to avoid certain practices such as torture and deceit; they were to remain loyal to their friends ND those who placed their trust in them. Furthermore, the concept of respecting women was considered a significant courtesy, though not directly mentioned in the Ten Commandments of Chivalry. Men were to exhibit manners at all times, and they must be polite and attentive to women. Additionally, gentlemen showed respect to whoever should be their host.

Andrea Aquaplanes, a 12th century author, wrote De Amour, known today in English as The Art of Courtly Love. In his work, he addresses the “twelve chief rules of love,” and elaborates on thirty-one aspect of “the art of courtly love. Rules that men must abide by consisted of topics such as chastity: “Thou shall keep thyself chaste for the sake of her whom thou loves” (Marshall, 2002). Within these numerous rules, one can see what was thought of as proper in a relationship and the graciousness that was displayed toward women (Marshall, 2002).

Concepts such as this reveal the origins of present day views on chivalry or in some opinions, the lack of chivalry. Overall, I feel the principles that contribute to the idea of chivalry, whether or not construed by legend, are important ones. The codes that knights abided by revealed number of characteristics: faith, loyalty, strength, honesty, generosity and courtesy. I believe living an existence according to these principles, or even attempting to attain such standards, makes a person a superior, well-rounded individual.

Incorporating such characteristics into one’s everyday life allows a person to be more virtuous, and these values reinforce one’s relationship with the church, country and allies. The romanticism of chivalry has survived to present day, though the code is not held to standards nearly as high as in the past with the majority of the ideas falling to the wayside. I believe a rejuvenation of several of these notions could benefit factions of society and reinstate principles that should be essential for all mankind.

One love in Amsterdam Netherlands

I was there Amsterdam arena with my dad; it has never been the same between dad and I. He has never trusted me since I was expelled from school. We entered the arena and there were huge crowds of people I could not believe, it was unbelievable. We went to the checkpoint whilst I was there. I spotted this gorgeous black girl, good looking fit and extremely gorgeous. I was speechless as if my mom gave my slap on the cheek; I could not stop thinking about her I kept hearing my dad was calling me. I had to ignore him cause I just too focused, It felt empty around as if I was floating in an empty world of mine just her and me.

Inside of me I felt like shouting all my anger and bringing love in me. I kept on starring, trying to communication, eye contact, whilst my dad calling me, I couldn’t keep my eyes off her I couldn’t blink. From then on I thought I have to make some sort of Approach. She was just too irresistible I just thought she’s mine, still starring at each other I knew that there was something special. Suddenly we both started walking towards the door side ways facing each other, bumping in to people, exiting the arena thinking of what to say, we approached each other as if we have never seen a person before.

Hi, she responded hi, `I could tell she was a bit shy, anyway I do not mind shy girls. My name is Ethan but my friends call me big Ethan. Now would they call a handsome guy like you big Ethan, because I am, big, cuddly and strong. My prediction was wrong she was not shy at all. What is your name young lady, Jasmine, my name is jasmine but you can call anything you want. So what is a beautiful girl like you doing here, why thank you, I’m here with a couple of friends, are your friends as beautiful as you are. She never answered the question, it was a bit strange, and I felt unsecure from that point, I couldn’t feel the trust, between us.

Here they come they approached me the way jasmine and I approached each other. One of the girls was whispering I could make out what she was saying. The girls looked shy, because there were hiding behind jasmines back, as if they had never seen humans before. Girls this is Ethan, hi Ethan. Ethan that is Monica, Lisa and Vanessa. They all started to giggle, don’t worry they always do this when they see handsome boy like you. So you must be Vanessa, jasmine was just talking about you, as I was moving along greeting them and I take it your Lisa hello Ethan, and you must be the lovely Monica boy you are harming.

Every time I shacked one of the girls’ hands I could see a warning in their eyes, I do not know why it happened it must have been my imagination. Vanessa was half cast girl with plated hair with streaks running down the hair great personality, identical to jasmine except the face totally different from each other. The great thing was they all did not have a childish act, they acted like adults. Because I remember when I was at school they all used to say oh boy I hate boy, That still goes in schools. The other thing was, they were extremely good looking and much more fitter.

So ladies can I take you out for drink sure. In me I said to my elf this is my night. Follow me ladies, we walked to the nearest Dutch restaurant, the BJi??RDWING cafi??. It looked like one of that American silver with seventies style writing, carriages like the one in back to the future with tight leather seats, there called dinners. Just remembered something girls, I have to call him on the mobile al else he’ll be worried sick about me. When calling, I saw the girl’s giggling gossiping boy they might even think I am a daddy’s boy or even mommy’s boy.

Oh dad it me Ethan, Ethan were have you been I’ve been worried sick, on’t worry, don’t what was meant to think when you left, I am fine dad. Son I want you back here now, but, no but, no what did you say, no leave me alone since I was twelve you been treating me like a baby but I’m not a child any more I’m You’ve never given me a chance a live independently I’m seventeen years old. From then I had hang the telephone, in me I could feel pain the pain. When you feel that person a you love won’t give you a chance, I felt liked my heart would burst with anger, and my veins popping out like a hulk. I sat down hiding the expression on my face that I had when speaking on the telephone.

So ladies what may a get you ladies? Vanessa responded rapidly saying you can get me anything you want, everyone just looked at her, especially jasmine, I could see it in her sparking eyes how she felt, Personally, I felt that Vanessa was a flirt. I told the girls that I now places were we could go and spend some time, I told them it was a surprise. We were walking on the streets of Amsterdam bracing ourselves. Walking in a group so at least we could defend our selves, suddenly a trump jumped right in front of use, this old raged old man, who wore a fisher mans suit with a hat, he smelt worse than the public toilets, n the high streets. A drunken mad person had not shaved for a long time all this I could tell by looking at him.

For a moment, I thought we would die. We increased our walking speed, the trump still following us. We turned around and looked behind us, he was gone . it looked like we were too fast for him, the like light began to fade in the allay way, whilst the dark skies covering the moon as if on of us would turn in to a wolf. We walked threw the alleyway just about to walk out of it, suddenly there was a noise, I thought was one of the girls stamped on something. Then I shouted look! Look! .

It was the most horrifying thing I had ever saw, a black cat shredding this mouse into pieces, While all the girls couldn’t bare to look for a second. Moreover, jasmine on my shoulder sacred out of her life. The cat just left the helpless the rat eaten to shreds with it guts hanging out and blood running down to the pipeline like water floods. We continued walking until we saw the amazing blocks of house and so much light as if they had put a torch in my face or as if I was questioned by the federal government the C. I. A the F. B. I. We walked a blocks to my friend house, he name is Jesse we have known ach other since child hood, he’s like a brother to me, also my best friend.

We walked up to his house, we rang the bell, we waited we were just took our first step down, then he finally answered. When he opened the door he had, his pyjamas on I was surprised to see Jesse in his pyjamas because not an early sleeper. Oh its brother, yeah its me brother Eth, so why are you wearing pyjamas now it’s even midnight. No its just I have nothing else to do. Anyway, we are going to night do you want come yeah of course. In addition, you said we, where are the rest oh sorry.

Girls come up, so t looks like you came honeys, girls that’s Jesse, hello Jesse. So are your parents around no there all out on a business trip. It looks like we have the house to ourselves I guess so, when I said that we have the house to ourselves, Jesse didn’t look happy this wasn’t the Jesse I knew, the Jesse that I spent my child hood with. Therefore, are you going to let us in or let us freezes to death out here, sorry of course, you could come in Come in girls, they all walk in one by one while I was introducing them to Jesse. That’s my girl she’s jasmine, this is Vanessa, come in baby, (I warned

Jesse if he said anything a bit too explicit, she would take it the wrong way) boy get some tick tuck, I warned Jesse about it but he never did listen. That is Monica and Lisa Jasmines best friend they are good looking. Jesse went to freshen up, while we were down in the lounge having some drinks. Fifteen minutes later Jesse cam down looking good handsome why thanks Vanessa. I was shocked at the way Vanessa had a change of mind the she acted. Then the door rang who could be there, I thought. You said your parents are gone don’t worry its not as if it’s the police. The way it sounded as if he already knew who was at the door.

Simon & Michael what is up? I recognised the voice, is that Michael, I rushed to the door `’Mickey” “brother” and it looks like Simon came along, coming in. we went and sat in the lounge, while the girls were listening, so mike what are you doing here. I just arrived from Hong Kong with Simon, some of our friends told us you were here in the neighbourhood, is that Jesse, gosh you have grown. I was a bit surprised to see Simon, when I looked at him he looked lost as if he didn’t know me. However, while looking at him I was quiet confused because the Simon I know was totally different? This wasn’t the Simon I knew.

I was speaking to Michael and Jesse, Simon went to speak with the girls then, I turned around I saw Simon touching Jasmine in a way I could not explain I was disgusted when saw Simon touching her in an annual manner. My heart was beating so fast I thought it was an earthquake . I shouted get of my girl! I repeatedly kept on shouting just seeing Simon caressing her hair, running his hands down her face. I felt like murdering him, I got him on the floor and started punching him, if it weren’t for Jesse, and Michael to stop it, he’d be dead. I cooled down the, girl were wondering what was going on.

I told jasmine why I was furious she then told the rest of her friends. The girl decided to stay for the night. We never really got to know them. When I kept my cool I walked to Simon and apologised to how I had reacted, he seemed cool about it. When shaking his hand I saw an expression that he had on his face that I did not like but it quiet unexplainable I rapidly withdrew my hand as if I was agitated and walked off. He stood there as if he had been in a shock I grabbed jasmine, put my hand on her should as if we were at the movies, So, boys or girls are we staying here or going to party or what

Yeah were going to party every body else looked in mood except for Simon he has never liked the outdoors I’d think he would rather play video games. I didn’t bother asking him because, it just raise to many arguments. Michael had arrived with some fire works from Hong Kong, and he knew were we could light then up. I quite shocked because Michael had only arrived from Hong Kong today. I when up to Simon asking why he was so quiet, but he didn’t answer Simon leaning on the balcony without saying a word as if he was speechless.

I asked Monica to try and comfort him I didn’t want him to e that quiet as if he was lost in the world, like a boy Despite falling out with him, I still felt sorry for I had to putt every behind me try to make sure it will never happen again. We left Jesse’s house to walk to the beach it wasn’t a public beach of course not anyway who would be at the beach at midnight except for us We started off. I had the urge to start speaking to jasmine while everybody else was holding hands. So jasmine I haven’t really got to know you that much, of course you know my name. But I want to know everything about you. Well I was born her in Amsterdam, suddenly I felt a shiver on her I ave her my coat to wear, she continued.

My dad died two yours ago, `’oh I’m very sorry” I hope you don’t mind me asking what happened. Well he was selling drugs; he was with, the Mafia he was an alcoholic he apparently owed loads of money to this person. I think it was Andrew he had a middle name I cannot remember, wait it was Alcapone the last name started with a d this is just too much. She continued. One night he was watching television, I was quite young then. I heard my dad crying for help; shouting screaming I could feel the pain he was going threw. He shouted my name I rushed down.

It was too late; the murderer had already left he put a note around the knife saying he’ll be back. Since then we have changed our name, but I will never forget his face, he was beastly look alike I did not know what to do. He was laying there with a knife threw his body I sat there saying to myself `’why…. Why… ” while steam rising from his gaping wound. “Have the police ever found him? ” ”They did but it had been too late he had committed suicide at least that is what they said, but I believe he still alive”. ometimes I think I want revenge and to think what he did to my amily, he ripped our hearts out my soul, my life, and the person I love. But the one thing I will never forgive him. He ripped our family apart! But I had to get over it, if I had killed Andrew Capone what next, I would have felt guilty for taking a man’s life. [INS: :INS] ”What about your mom? ” Mom hardly speaks, since he died, once she shouted why just the word I said when he was murdered. Too many questions, I sometimes could feel the pain she is going through and one day I hope I would be able to take the pain away. What does she do? She works for the United Nations.

For a moment there I could the pain she was going through, she then drew a tear of sadness I could sense she wanted revenge but didn’t know were to go she was lost like I was. She then asked about me. ”What about you? ” Born in Gaborone Botswana No brothers or sisters, my parents are diplomats. “Lucky you have both of your parents alive”, `’not quite because, my mom died two years ago. ” “I thought you said your parents are diplomats” “You don’t get it, I had two moms at least that what my parents said” “Why did they say that? ” “I don’t really know, they said she died in a car crush, but the hing that puzzles me, they never found a body, but I think there trying to keep as apart for some reason. ”

“Then how come you have two moms” “Well in Botswana you can marry at least three or four, but you must be able to support the family” “So when you grow older would you marry load of wives? ” `’No there is only one for me, and it is a special one, you know that special person the perfect match. ” `’ So who is that special one” approaching me as if she was going to stroke my face with a grin on her face grin as if she expected me to say her name. When she asked me that question, I could immediately see a sparkle in er eyes; I could see us together on the waters in her blue eyes. She asked whom that special one was again, but really I didn’t I wasn’t sure if she was that special one, were we meant for each other I asked myself and I was still not sure.

“No”, I answered, I just do not know. It is not that I do not like her, in fact, I love her. Nevertheless, I am not sure if she feels the same about me, I tried to answer questions that I have never been able to answer before, Does she feel the same about me? I was not sure, too many question I could not answer. One thing that Jasmine and I have in common is that we both live imilar lives. We reach the lake there I saw a cliff, I thought to myself I have seen that some where I swear but I just couldn’t make out where I saw it. Michael and Simon set-up the fire works, while we brought some wood with us, to light a small fire. Then Jesse and I move further up the lake so we can speak privately so the rest could be better acquainted.

Hence, Jesse what do you think about Vanessa? She is all right actually I think I love, but the love I have for her is unexplainable, I can feel the force pulling us together, like magnets. What about you Ethan well I like jasmine more than like, I could feel something pecial building up you know that tingly feeling that you get when everything is going your way, but I just don’t know if she the right one I am not it puzzles me. Jesse do you think you would ever spend the rest of your life with Vanessa.

You cant really answer that question because were still young, as a teenager I just cant say, considering I have not even thought about it yet, and we have just known each other for a day. What about you Ethan what do you think about jasmine? I love jasmine though I have only known her for a day, but I felt that I had already known her. It was too convoluted to explain. I do have feelings for er but I am not sure if she is that special one, that I can be able to spend the rest of my life with her.

You must be joking, spend the rest of you life with her, what, there’s nothing wrong with jasmine! Its not jasmine its just were too young to get married, we have to live our lives before that I would have thought I would get married at thirty years old. That my option, I don’t mind because it’s not me getting married early, I am your best friend, it is only me to advise you but at the end of the day it is your choice if you want to do it or not. However, I could feel that Jesse felt the same that I did but to

Vanessa, for some reason I felt he was lying to me. Every time I asked him a question, when answering the questions he kept on turning his head around as if he could sense some behind him. Suddenly when Jesse and I were speaking we both her a noise, coming from all directions, as If cars had surrounded us with the engine running. Jesse and I could not make out what it was, Jesse and I stood up whilst squinting trying to see what it was looking lost as if we were in the jungle trying to find our way home.

Whilst everybody wondering what was going on, Then all I could remember was Jesse warning watch out motor bike ruising threw the beach as if it was a dirt track. And Jesse laying on the silky sand on the lake, trying to help, I took him in my hands, as if was carrying a baby lost in the wilderness trying to keep him safe. Holding him, Michael came and checks his pulse as if he were a paramedic, Michael said there was no hope he was dead, not breathing. Holding him did not give up. I knew he would not die without a fight. I have never lost faith in him and I will not lose faith in him now. I sat there in agony repeatedly shouting this cannot be happening tears dripping like heavy rain tears of faith.

This cannot be happening to me why I ask myself too many questions, he is like a brother to me, please forgive me I beg you, he risked he’s life for mine. Whilst resisting to whip his tears off his face letting the tears drip on he’s face as if he was being baptised. From then on, I knew how Romeo felt when he lost Juliet but this time it my best friend. Still holding him I laid my head on he’s chest, everyone surrounded Jesse and I without a word being said. Jasmine trying to comfort me getting a tissue and trying to whip the tears of my face, but I still resisted there’s still hope, I me I could feel the pain he was going hrough. However, I still did not give up.

I remember my mom telling me never give on something you have, and Jesse is like a brother, we own each other. While my head rested on his chest I cold feel movement I was not sure at first, but then I could feel his stomach rise, I rapidly stood back, he sat up as if he didn’t where he was, saying what happen. We all sighed in relief, scared. He then stood up shacking he’s head, as if he was confused, brushing of the sand in his hair. He smiled we all ran to give him a hug we all worried. I have never ever lost faith in Jesse not on him.

I then realised, how it feels to loose someone who’s close to you, If Jesse had died I would not be live with myself It would just be unexplainable. Was it his colour? I asked myself. If it was there is no point of living in a society where they judge you by your colour, but Jesse and I will try and find the culprit. Jesse and I sat on the cliff. I felt very emotional then; I could hardly speak as if I had been struck by lightening. I sat there facing the sea, trying to explain how I felt. “Do you know how I felt, what I was going threw my head when I saw you laying there in agony. Do now” trying let out his pain, showing motion showing how depressed he would be by loosing a very special friend, that he does care about him say it by his words.

“No” Jesse responded, in a very soft tone, whilst facing the sea. I looked at him for a moment, puzzled confused did not know who to turn to for help. Jesse is the person I would usually turn to. However, not at this moment, I felt vulnerable for had happened. Jesse still staring stars, thinking, trying to find answers an explanation. I it was that easy, but life is not what we think, it is not easy nor hard it is just right. (People may disagree because of the battles that have occurred his century, there the First World War the Second World War.

Still in our society or world, we still have a lot to learn about ourselves) in his eyes I could she the fear that had come across him, I could see the sorrow in his eyes. Courage within him I could feel the vibes flowing between as like a storm. I knew he was afraid, but did not know what he feared it was not what had occurred today. I put my thoughts beside me, and tried to move on. I moved away from Jesse because I felt that I needed some time alone. I looked at my watch, it wasn’t even that late. I was a bit sceptical about it, as I sat there on edge of the cliff, eliving memories, of the past weeks. Memories that I thought would be gone, but I am strong-minded, not even to forget some of my memorise from primary school. When I was with my best friend, he’s name was Michelle he was from Marseilles not that tall about five foot six fairly short black-haired he was quit sensitive, funny person but I have not seen him for quite a long time.

I remember It was the last year we would be able to see each other, that was when I was at school in England when Jesse was in Eindhoven studying at this private school. We were talking about meeting up with each other one day and tell bout how life was or start our own business have fun. However, since he left I had never been able to contact him. Life is a bit strange, just like we live in a strange world; we still have various things to learn about the civilisation we live in. I remember when I attempted to call him two months ago of November of 2002 because I wanted to go and visit him in Marseilles for his birthday his 18^th birthday, to see how things were. For me that was the day of depression, I was confused, apparently he moved to Lisbon in Portugal to continue his studies there. I was shocked at the time, how could he have not told me.

Because Michelle and I had promised each other to always keep in touch on what goes on in our lives, to be there for each other no matter what happens to us. However, it seemed that friendship that we once had faded into thin air. From the letter, he had sent to me in England. Dear Ethan I have to go. Life is getting difficult here in Marseilles I will have to move away from France, I do not know when. I do not know if I will be able to see you again. It will be very difficult to forget you, our friendship has pned many years, and I will always remember you. However, my life is destined somewhere else, at the moment I am lost,

I do not know what to do, depressed too many things going on in my life, too many bad things. Stay well, I hope that one day we will meet again, it will be long, as I must heal. I will go to my friend Jean Pier I am yet to find out where he stays. Goodbye my friend. Best Friends forever Jean Pier After reading, the distressing letter I felt as if I was cut open and a piece of me was taken away from me. I felt as if a person had came between us, like when the moon stands between the two stars at night. I remembered those times when I was uncertain about our friendship, was he really a true friend?

Did he trust me as much as I trusted him? Were all things we did together false? Our childhood, the good times and bad time. The times when we were, there are for each other. Hadn’t that meant anything to him? I was dumbfounded. I just could not answer the question. I had a moment to think, think about those times we had together, but we have to move on. I sat there still having a moment to my self, this was my time, as I exposed my face to the blistering winds, I felt free all the things you would feel when you are contented. I heard footstep behind soft steps as if the person did not want me to now who was behind me creeping as if I was to be stabbed on my back, by a mass murderer. With a voice a sweet soft tone saying my name I figured it must be jasmine, I sat there still looking at sea, didn’t hesitate to look to see who was behind me. I sat there as if I knew she was there all along.

However when I finally turned my back she was not there, was this my imagination, I could swear I heard her voice. I sat there puzzled, I thought I must be really obsessed with her, paranoid even to hear her voice. “What’s wrong with me” as everyone else stared in disbelief, they probably thought I a psychopathic aniac, or just weird. I had a friendship ring that he gave me to remember by him just before I got up and walked back to the fireworks display, I took a chance and threw away the ring into the depths of the sea. Putting myself out of misery, forgetting the memories that we had together, knowing that one day we will meet again. I walked to the fire that was set-up, on the centre of the beach, still having thoughts, thought that could change my life. “Am I going to spend the rest of my life with Jasmine? ” That’s what really bothered me, I guess I was not in the position talk about it yet. What’s wrong my friend,” Michael was trying to calm Ethan’s pain as he tried to hide the look on his face that made him look morose, and lonely. “I just don’t know” Ethan ignoring Michael, seeking for his own answers.

“You don’t normally act this way what’s wrong with you? ” “You just don’t understand” while he plays with the sand, with his head between his legs sulking. “Understand what! that you’re madly in love with Jasmine, you think I don’t see what goes on. ” Michael pointing, pressuring Ethan to confess. “Anyway you have nothing to do with it, why don’t you just go! ” Michael walking away from the argument, trying to keep his cool.

I sat there still depressed, but vigilant to what was going on around me, my life is much too complicated. While I sat there on the beach, Simon came along, it was a bit strange because it is very rare for Simon and I to speak. “So what’s on your mind my friend? ” looking at Ethan as if he was forgiven for what he did before. “I cant believe you even have the guts to say that,” uh my friend, you’re just wasting your breath. “Why are so mean, what have I ever done to you, I am trying to be your friend, ok maybe I gave the wrong impression to you when I touched your girlfriend. However, I am very sorry, I may not be one of your est friends but that does not stop us from getting along.

So what going on, from the argument you had with Michael it doesn’t that everything is well? ” Simon, making his point, trying to make life easier for them, instead of hating each other. ” Nothing’s wrong with me, its just you caught at the wrong time to speak to me, for I have been having thoughts,” as he drew a small tear, a tear of emotion and affection. “What kinds of thoughts,” Simon asking anxiously. “Love. ” “Do you mean Jasmine? ” “Who else. ” “Oh. ” “So what happened to Michael, he seemed upset did you two have an argument? as he glanced at him anxiously “No, he just caught me at the wrong time, I hope he is still alright despite our fall out, I meant no harm. ” Simon and I seemed to settle our differences quite quickly.

After the conversation, I went to apologise to Michael, it stupid of me to put the blame on him. “Michael! ” I shouted. I saw him sat by the edge of the cliff. “Michael, I would like to apologise, I never meant to start an argument with you. ” “I am sorry as well; I should not have aggravated you while you were thinking,” as Michael turned around with a smile of satisfaction. We were friends again, but stronger.

The church bell rang, it was midnight we decided to call it a day. Just before we left Monica said that Jesse and Vanessa were gone, but I wondered were they would go at this time of night. I went to ask Lisa but she said the last time they saw Jesse and Vanessa was when they walking together to fireworks display. I wondered why would they be there. We all walked towards where the fire works were launched, Jesse and Vanessa were not there, and there was a staircase, which had led down to a cave, I then saw movement in the cave, quick, very bright.

What was that I pointed, everybody seemed to deny seeing anything, I nodded y head in disbelief, and I was dazed So dazed that I stood there for ten minutes in the same position. I did not even realise Jesse and Vanessa had already turned up. Everyone else moved further away from the cave, scarred out of their lives. What is in there? I asked myself. I sat there on the staircase that led to the mysterious cave, as I was there I heard footsteps coming from all directions. However, it only jasmine.

“What’s wrong Ethan, you look disturbed? ” Jasmine comforting Ethan as he tried to explain to what he saw in the cave. “I swear I saw something down there. ” Ethan investigating to what had appened. “Don’t worry they are probably just bats” “Believe me I did not see bats and I do not see things either. ” “Anyway what is up with you, you have been quiet since we arrived here. ” “No your are joking,” as if she had been already chatting for a long time. “Seriously, you have been quiet and I have been getting worried about you, because I would hate someone to put you in a bad position. ” “No it just I have been having thoughts” “What kind of thoughts? ” Ethan asked anxiously, as Michael came to interrupt the conversation. “Jasmine, Ethan we have to make move on, it is getting too dark we have to get back. “

I told Jasmine that we would speak again, on the way to Jesse’s house as we were going to have a sleep over. I had to speak to Jasmine, because of what she said. The thoughts she had; I was worried. Would this mean the end of the one love of my life? I did not know. So we left the beach, as they called it, as the rest were anxious to get back. Everybody leapt ahead as Jasmine and I walked together, I was anxious to ask her what she was thinking about. “Jasmine remember you said you had thoughts. ” “Yes, yes I remember. ” Jasmine replied remembering what we were speaking about. “I had thoughts doubts, about our relationship.

Since you came, my life has changed, immensely, totally. It has been like a dream, paradise; oh I wish we could make that dream last forever. ” She rested on my shoulder in the full moon, walking towards a bridge that led to Jesse’s house After that I felt inarticulate . She was thinking the opposite to what I was thinking about. “Jasmine, I have to admit I have had some doubts as well” turning his head as they walked to the centre of the bridge, he walked to the rail of the bridge, trying to let out his feelings. “So what is on your mind Ethan? “

“Oh Jasmine, I just don’t know how to explain it. Still leaning on the rail of the bridge, trying to tell, express his feelings to her. “Jasmine, what I wanted to say is that, I have also been thinking about our relationship. What I want to say is that I like you, more than like. However, I feel that there is a certain part of me that’s telling me it might not work, we have taken a big step my life is my too sophisticated at the moment, it is a roller coaster. ” Ethan was hardly being able to speak lucidly.

“No Ethan, it will work, the last thing I would do is run away from our relationship, I love you too much for us to split apart, you make e feel important, you make me see a side of myself that I have never seen before. ” Jasmine letting out her feelings the way she felt about Ethan. Leaning on the bridges rail I stood there as I lifted my head facing the full moon, I realised it is not easy to let out emotions, what I learnt was it is better to show than hide you true feelings. As I converged looking at the full moon, I could abruptly see my future flash in front of my eyes. I ask myself, how will it be to be old. Will we still be able to do the same things that we did when we were young? Will we be still kissing, snogging, all the things we did when young?

Will we have the amusement that we had together the appetite for each other? I do not know that yet, but one day that day will come when I will know how it feels to be old, and in love. I took jasmines hand, holding her hand I felt that we had built a bond between us but stronger like a force, that was unbreakable the force that you have between your best friend, between your parents. Nevertheless, for me it seemed that the one forces that I once had with my dad seemed to be lost. Once there lost things will never be the same again. I turned around still leaning on the rail of the bridge, finding jasmines in front me.

She saw that I had shed a tear, she took her hand, and wiped the tear off my cheeks sensitively with her right hand running my down that smooth sensitive face of mine. We stood there looking at each other all I wanted her, to do is rest on my shoulder, and be free with me, because this could be the last time we see each other. It seemed not to happen. I took Jasmines, hand and continued our journey back, as we reached the end of the bridge, there as we left the bridge was a park with scenic beauty though it dark.

While Jasmine and I were walking together, I saw Jesse and Vanessa, Michael and Monica had probably eached Jesse’s house by now. Nevertheless, Lisa always seemed to disappear, always the quiet one, since I saw her I was never able to understand her. , anyway she probably went home. Jesse and Vanessa were sat on the bench, in the park facing each other holding hands suffixed, as if it was a replay of jasmine and I when we were on the bridge together, madly in love with each other except with a different scenario. I did not realise how much they fancied each other, when Jesse and I spoke I did not know that he was staid about their relationship, perhaps its time for me to take him more seriously.

I guess I should let Jesse have some space to himself because I have always be protective over him, as I said before he is like the brother I never had. Jasmine and I attempted to walk past them ignoring, them as if nothing happened. They immediately acted as if everything was normal, Jesse looking at me as if I was a fool, swinging his head, to the right, wanting to speak to me in private while Vanessa and jasmine also walked ahead have their own jest. “So Jesse what was all that about. ” “What are you talking about,” while strolling in the silent night of the park. Don’t speak to me like that you know what I am talking about

Show the importance of four women to Jane Eyre’s development

The four people who played a significant part in Jane Eyre’s early life whilst also influencing the development of her character, were Mrs. Reed, Bessie, Miss Temple and Helen Burns. All four of these women had strong beliefs about how women should behave, in addition to possessing a deep rooted passion for their own religious beliefs. This essay will discuss how each of these women shaped the person that Jane Eyre became. Initially, I will be looking at Mrs Reed who is Jane’s aunt through marriage and discussing how significant she was to Jane’s early life. Mrs. Reed had responsibility for Jane, as sole carer, a role that neither Jane nor Mrs. Reed were happy with.

Their relationship was one of hatred and general dislike on both parts. Indeed, Mrs. Reed so disliked Jane, even from a young age that she treated her worse than one of the servants of the house. It was not that she did not like children, as she had several of her own to whom she showed great love and affection. However, so acute was the resentment that she held for Jane that she frequently separated her from the activities planned for her own children, declaring that they were; “intended only for contented, happy little children”.

Unfortunately, exclusion such as this only succeeded in embittering Jane and causing a larger rift between herself and her aunt. Additionally, these actions also succeeded in Jane developing a general dislike for her cousins, in particular Master John Reed, who behaved as equally disgracefully towards Jane, following the example laid down by his mother. He treated her like a “rat” whose actual existence was insignificant. Infact, the relationship between the two deteriorated to such a degree that it resulted in a physical argument which ended up with Jane being imprisoned in the Red Room.

Although the intention had been to punish Jane, the Red Room actually assisted Jane in becoming a stronger person, which in turn resulted in Mrs. Reed becoming fearful of her unwanted niece. Jane had time to reflect and realise the weapons that would most offend her aunt, that is, to turn her aunt’s religious convictions back upon herself, as can be seen when she relates in the mind of the mature Jane. “But I ought to forgive you, for you knew not what you did: While rending my heart-strings, you thought you were only uprooting my bad propensities”.

Not only does she blasphemously incorporate the dying words of Christ upon the cross in her speech, but she also professes forgiveness, which follows the word of the Lord. Mrs. Reed had expected bitterness, hatred and spite as a response to her punishment, but instead is faced with an apparent religious conviction, which undermines her actions and leaves her nervous as to future responses. Jane had grown strong through her abuse and would in future enjoy the opportunity to un-nerve her tormentors. This speech is a prelude to the personality of the ‘new Jane’ that is to come.

Another example of this change is witnessed by Mrs. Reed after attempting to ruin Jane’s prospects of attending Lowood School when she provided ill-intended advice to Mr. Brocklehurst. However, on this occasion Jane does not use faith to un-nerve Mrs. Reed but explodes with the rage of a ten year old when she says; I dislike you the worst of anybody in the world except John Reed”, and then continues in her tirade with, “I am glad you are no relation of mine. I will never call you aunt again as long as I live, I will never come to see you when I am grown up; and if anyone asks me how I liked you,…

I will say the very thought of you makes me sick”. This speech leaves its recipient wanting rid of its orator more than ever and hence Jane succeeds in her plan to be rid of her aunt and her wretched cousins, as she leaves to attend the school Mr Lloyd had suggested she attended after the Red room incident. However, she again leaves the aunt feeling un-nerved as the rest of her angry outburst had told of how her uncle would seek revenge on the wicked aunt for her poor treatment of his niece.

Although it can be clearly seen that the two never liked each other, it is apparent that Jane learnt a lot from her aunt, including what is expected of a young lady, how people should be treated in order to prosper in life and she learnt about the church and religion. This brings us to the next significant influence in Jane Eyre’s life. Bessie was a servant at Mrs. Reed’s house in Gateshead Hall and was the first person who showed Jane real love and friendship. She was prone to giving Jane treats and creating songs about her, such as; “Poor Miss Jane is to be pitied”.

On the night that Jane was locked in the Red Room having her “species fit”, it was Bessie who was at her side, making sure that the young girl was alright and ensuring that she had something “to drink, or eat”, taking care of her needs. For Bessie was of the opinion that Mrs Reed was far too hard on the young girl and thus had great sympathy for Miss Eyre. This can be seen when Bessie helps to prepare Jane for her departure to attend school at Lowood. Bessie has tea with the young Miss. Eyre in the absence of Mrs. Reed and the children, grabbing the opportunity to tell Jane that she was fonder of her “than all the others”.

Despite that fact that Bessie was only a servant, she teaches Jane to become a strong woman who should not settle for anything less than honesty and commitment. It is also through Bessie’s eyes that Jane sees the purer side of God’s love, as Bessie was also a strong Christian who tried to let Jane see that she lived her life according to his word, which is what brought her inner peace. The third person who played a significant role in Jane Eyre’s life was her teacher at Lowood School, Miss. Temple, who was superintendent in charge of Jane’s daily life at school. However, unlike Mrs. Reed, Jane admired this woman with “the sense of admiring awe”, as it was Miss. Temple who had cleared Jane’s blackened name. After Mrs. Reed had spoken to Mr. Brocklehurst about what a bad child Jane was, and how she resembled the devil in her actions, he had taken this information and publicly humiliated Jane with it. However, Miss. Temple managed to re-address this malicious rumour and restore Jane’s good name, whilst also helping Jane to see that she no-longer had to be the outsider, as the other girls at the school were happy to be her friends.

In short, Miss. Temple, with her healthy, truthful smile, offers Jane opportunities in life, something that had previously been denied to her. She showed Jane care, from the young girls first day at Lowood, trying to make her feel comfortable and included. She also recognised a child in need of love and thus showed her some affection, giving hugs, something only one other person had done for Jane before.

Hence, Jane felt indebted to Miss. Temple and declares; “To her instruction I owed the best part of my acquirement”. So strong an influence was this person on Jane’s life that when Miss. Temple left the school and got married, Jane felt that Lowood was no-longer a home. Arguably therefore, she too, like the other significant factors in Jane’s life, had an impact on the woman that Jane became. Miss. Temple also held deep religious convictions and as Jane’s teacher, influenced Jane to live her life as a young religious woman who obeyed the word of the Lord. Nevertheless, of all the religious influences in Jane Eyre’s early life, perhaps the most influential of all was her one and only true young friend, Helen Burns.

Her love of Helen is evident in the following speech; nor ever ceased to cherish for her a sentiment of attachment as strong, tender and respectful as any that ever animated my heart”. The two girls’ first meeting illustrates an instant connection, as Helen was reading a book, and Jane was a keen reader, who loved nothing more than to be lost in stories, which were a means to escape her dreadful reality with Mrs. Reed and her cousins. Helen is an intelligent, knowledgeable and dutiful young lady, which leads to the two girls sharing many an opposing discussion about forbearance and religious beliefs.

One such discussion centres on love and Jane’s desire for it; “If others don’t love me, I would rather die than live – I cannot bare to be solitary and hated”. However, Helen conveys that for her, the love of the Lord is the greatest love of all and in knowing that he is watching over her, it is enough for her to be happy and confident in who she is. For as she states, this love is more meaningful than that temporary love of “human beings”, as it lasts forever. Indeed, many of their conversations ultimately referred back to God in some way or another, no-matter from where the discussion had originated.

Jane rarely argued with Helen’s religious convictions as she was in fact in complete awe of her; “I was struck with wonder”. Even when discussing death, Helen had “an impression of woe”. Helen’s deeply rooted religious beliefs made her unafraid of the inevitable, as she knew that the end of this life on earth was not the end of the story. Helen firmly believed in an eternal afterlife in Heaven which was difficult for Jane to understand and come to terms with. Jane knew that when her friend died, she would mourn her loss as she loved her so much, but she knew that Helen would not have wanted this, as it was against God’s will.

Nonetheless, the conflict within religion, supplied by the major influences in Jane’s early life, shaped the woman who she became. The vengeful and fearful ‘Almighty’, espoused by Mrs. Reed, was to be rejected but the more caring, loving and forgiving God that was evident in Bessie, Miss. Temple and Helen certainly played a part in a blossoming Jane Eyre, who grew to be a bright, outspoken, and bold woman. Although not filled with religious conviction herself, Jane admitted to the significant influence that these women who did believe, had played in shaping who she had grown to be in adulthood.

La Lodge and Entr’acte

I think that the poem entr’acte describes the painting very well. It brings across the feelings of the two people in it in a very good and sensitive way.

Firstly the title of the poem -‘entr’acte’ makes the poem sound elegant and impressive, or even sophisticated. The title means in between acts which describes the painting very well because she is just sitting there and he has his eyes on things completely away from the stage. Entr’acte also sounds a bit like ‘attract’ so maybe that has something to do with it.

At the start of the poem it says ‘the cuff links whispers to the glove, such elegance and all for love’ I think in These lines the man speaking and he is saying to himself how elegant he is in his suit, (maybe he is being vain) and he how has done it all for love, maybe the love of the woman sitting in front of him or maybe the women he is looking at through his binoculars.

Then in the second stanza ‘the glove confesses to the glass, oh how slowly five acts pass.’ I think that it is the woman speaking about herself and how slowly five acts pass. Maybe the five acts pass slowly because she is not interested in the performance and is bored or maybe it is because she is waiting for the end so she can get away and do something else.

In the first line of the third stanza, ‘the glass is lifted to the eye’ I think this maybe the poet speaking, doing a running commentary of what is going on. On the second line of the stanza,’ Show me a tear I cannot dry’ I think this is the glass speaking about how the woman might be crying inside. She might be crying in the inside because the man is horrible to her or maybe because she just does not want to be there. Its like she’s crying inside but is holding herself together so she doesn’t show it.

In the first line of the forth stanza ‘The eye shows nothing to the eye’ I think this means that if you look at someone you cant judge them by what they look like because you cant see what they are like inside. In the second line ‘such elegance and all for art’ I think It could be the man talking and saying that she was there displayed in the front of the box just for show. To say to the other people there that yes he could have a beautiful woman, or she could be there to make other woman jealous. Maybe the line means something completely different and the poet is saying ‘such elegance’- because they are all dressed up in beautiful clothes, and ‘all for art’- because In the end the people in the picture were probably there just to pose for the artist to paint them.

In the painting it has the woman at the front of the picture- is this just so the man can show her off or is it because he is being a gentleman and letting her sit in front so she can see better. He is sitting at the back his could because if he looks up at other woman in the audience she won’t be able to see. She is also wearing flowers by her face and breast as if to draw attention to these features. Her face is fixed, and her eyes especially make her look sad inside as if she is trying to put on a show, to hide her emotions in public. Her lips are bright red maybe for love, anger, passion or lust. Her dress is black and white stripes like a prisoners clothes, maybe she’s trapped by the man behind her from freedom.

Overall I think that the man behind her is using her to show of to the woman he is maybe looking at in the audience. He has dressed her and himself up in very exquisite and elegant clothes just for the show and to make him look wealthy.

I think she is sad and upset that she is trapped as a model for him and is bored by the whole performance; she not very interested in it and probably wants to be somewhere else.

Wordsworth v Browning

The Power of Happiness As Christopher Morley once said ,”there Is only one success – to spend your life In your own way”. Similarly, Elizabeth Barrett Browning and William Wordsmith both have successfully happy lives, although they are consoled in different ways.

In both “How Do I Love Thee” by Elizabeth Browning and “l Wandered Lonely As A Cloud” by William Wordsmith, there is a common theme of happiness depicted through the use of diction, however, Browning presents reasons as to why she achieves happiness from a physical human companion, whereas in Wordsmiths, he cuisses how his happiness comes from the Inanimate prospects of nature, both using similes and personification to relay this to the reader. In “How Do Love Thee”, Browning lists the multitude of ways she loves her husband.

A theme of happiness pervades through the entirety of the poem as she describes this love she has with her husband. Browning states “my soul can reach, when feeling out of sight, for the ends of Being and ideal Grace” (3-4). Through the personification of her soul, Browning reveals her dependence on her husband for her happiness, not that this is necessarily a bad thing. She simply cannot fathom living without him, therefore making him the source of her happiness. Along with the use of personification, Browning depicts her love for her husband through multiple similes.

She “love[s] thee freely, as men strive for Right” (Browning 7), indicating her natural and free love for her husband. While other people and things in life take work and persistence, loving him comes easily and naturally to her. Similarly, she “love[s] thee with the breath, Smiles, tears of all [her] life” (Browning 12-13), continuing to show her presents and constant love for him with the use of enjambment. One could grasp the love and devotion she has for her husband in this one line where she essentially says he is everything to her.

Browning also states “. And, if God choose, I shall but love thee better after death”, relaying also the theme of happiness In accordance with her constant dependence on her husband (14). Along with expressing her undying love for her husband, Browning shows that this love brings her pure happiness. Using words such as “sun”, “smiles”, and “childhood”, Borrowing’s diction helps to relay the theme of happiness to the reader. Because Browning uses these words to portray a joyful tone, the reader can infer the happiness that her husband Robert brings to her.

Wordsmith’s poem, while still having a theme of happiness, shows how Wordsmith relies solely on the beauty of nature to bring him happiness, as opposed to a person. Though Browning needs a human companion, as many people do, to make her happy, Wordsmith finds conclusive happiness in the inanimate things of nature. Thinking back to a time of complete content, Wordsmith describes daffodils “tossing their heads in sprightly dance” (12). In this particular line of the poem, Wordsmith uses personification to describe the daffodils in an upbeat demeanor.

He knows that the daffodils and things of nature will stay with him constantly through his life. Therefore, through the sleep “continuous as the stars that careful selection of figurative language. As he describes the beauty and grace of the daffodils, Wordsmith “could not but be gay In such a Jocund company’, using enjambment to show that the daffodils bring him a happiness he cannot help nor deny (15-16). Although Browning needs the aid and presence off human being, Wordsmith relishes in “the bliss of solitude” (22), using only the things of nature to brighten his mood and devote his life.

In addition, when in “vacant or pensive mood”(20) he thinks about the daffodils and is immediately consoled Just by the memory of their beauty, thus reiterating his infatuation with nature. In addition to using figurative language, Wordsmith uses diction to also encompass the intended theme of happiness. The words “fluttering”, “glee”, and “pleasure” give off a tone of Joy, therefore continuing the theme of happiness throughout the poem. One could infer from his usage of these words that the fiddles and nature bring him the happiness he references throughout the poem.

Just like Wordsmith and Browning, we all have different things in life that make us happy, whether it be dancing, drawing, swimming, or baking. We all have that one thing to depend on when all else in the world seems wrong or against us. Wordsmith and Browning depict this in their poems, therefore continually relating to the common man and the literary era of romanticism. These poems they have shared with the world help readers to do what they are passionate about and happiness will come.
