Discuss Kessler and Mckenna’s view of gender attribution. More specifically, consider their claim that, in every day life, “there are certain objects (i.e., people) to which gender apparently must be attributed” (p.3). Briefly explain two specific ways in which Kessler and Mckenna’s broader discussion emphasizes the importance of gender attribution. Bearing in mind that these authors consider gender to be socially constructed—and not to be determined purely biologically—do you think there could be ways of reducing the emphasis our gender discourse places on binary gender attributions? Would there be a point to doing so? Why or why not? Argue for your position.
