The Life and Role of Rosa Parks

When Rosa Parks, a name well-known in black history, refused to move to the back of the bus so a white man could have her seat, was arrested and thrown in jail for disorderly conduct. Black people were treated horrible in the south and when black rights were established the way blacks were treated only changed minimally. The movie The Help is a movie based on a book written by Kathryn Stockett, this movie shows what it’s like to be a black woman in Jackson, Mississippi. Skeeter Phelan (Emma Stone) wants to expose the way black women are being treated in Jackson, her character as a 23-year-old educated white woman is different from the other white woman. Skeeter is a middle class woman who knows what it is like to have a black maid, but she wants to show the other side and how it is to be a black maid in the south Skeeter develops into a brave and independent woman who shows that she does not need a man.

White women relied on husbands and their maids for everyday life, while Skeeter is not the typical Jackson woman she struggles with finding the courage throughout the movie while helping others find their couraget. The Help, released in 2011, takes place in Jackson, Mississippi during the 1960‘s when segregation between whites and blacks was a big issue. Skeeter Phelan a young educated woman returns to Jackson where she lives with her mother. She comes from a middle-class family but chose to become independent and gets a job at the Jackson Journal writing the advice column. Skeeter is also writing a book on the side about how black women are treated in the south, and during the 1960 a book like this has never been written before.

She is taking a big risk in writing this book and takes her friends and the town for an interesting summert Interviewing black women who have worked as maids for a white family since they were 14 years old. Aibileen w (Viola Davis) is the first to be interviewed by Skeeter, shortly after Skeeter is interviewing more and more people. Skeeter‘s mother Charlotte Phelan (Allison Janney) wants Skeeter to be the typical Jackson white woman, finally settling down with a man and starting a family, In Skeeter’s attempts to please her mother she goes out with senator’s son who is against what Skeeter is writing about. With many stories to tell Skeeter writes her book and the people of Jackson are consumed with reading it, and only a few people know the book is about Jackson, Mississippi.

Black women raise white children in the south and they grow up different from other children in the United States Skeeter, raised by a black woman has impacted her life and this shows in the movie, Skeeter raised by Constantine Jefferson (Cicely Tyson) was the maid for the Phelan family for many years Skeeter considers Constantine as the woman who raised her and throughout the movie Skeeter says this many times. Not only does Skeeter believe that Constantine was more of a mother then her real mother, Mae Mobley (Eleanor Henry) daughter of Elizabeth Leefolt, (Ahna O’Reilly) tells her black maid Aibileen Clark that she is her real mother. Being raised by a black woman Skeeter does not see eye to eye with her mother, Skeeter wants to be an independent woman while her mother wants her to settle down with a man and have a family. Skeeter is struggling to find the courage to tell her mother she is not ready to settle down yet, and throughout the movie she gives hints to her mother but is still worried about what her mother will say.

The black maids of Jackson help Skeeter write her book but also help her find her courage. In the beginning of the movie, Skeeter is nervous about writing a book about racial and segregation in Jackson and hiding it from her mother, the town, and where she works Skeeter was turned down at first but when the black women are being treated worse with every day the first volunteer is Aibileen Clark One morning Aibileen goes to change Mae and sees that she was in a dirty dipper all night. This upsets Aibileen and she is ready to tell Skeeter how the women are changing. The white woman of Jackson are changing over the years, Aibileen was the maid for Elizabeth Leefolt’s mother and Aibileen liked working for the Leefolt family until Elizabeth hired Aibileen for her own Aibileen wants to help Skeeter even more and has her friends tell.

Skeeter what its like working for their white families, Skeeter’s stories pile up and she begins to feel more confident with herself and the book she is writing The age Skeeter is at now she should be settling down and starting a family while she wants to become self-independent and not have to rely on a man Her mother is pushing her to find a man get married and start a family, on her way to becoming like every other Jackson woman Skeeter goes on a date to make her mother happy and to her surprise she likes him, they continue to date and things are going good, Stuart Whitworth (Chris Lowell) the man Skeeter is seeing works on the oilrigs and believes in the traditional way of a Jackson family.

The women should be stay at home moms and the man should be the “breadwinner” of the family, Skeeter is trying to hide the book she is writing from Stuart and when she tells him about the book he is disappointed in her and sees that they don’t believe in the same thing.  Their relationship ends and at this point Skeeter loses all the confidence she builds up throughout the movie. The black women reminds Skeeter of the goal she had all along and sees that she does not need a man, though the relationship she lost that. The Help has caused debate on weather it is a racist film about the 1960 because black rights was shown through a white person perspective. The Help, told through Skeeter a white Jackson woman although she does not fit in with the rest of the Jackson women.

Critics from Shoomp say, “Skeeter is bold, fearless, and she doesn’t buy into the myths that black people are dirty and have diseases that are poison to white people“ implying that she had these characteristics the whole movie, on the other had some could argue she had to find courage in the beginning of the film and loses it at times Skeeter hides that she is writing a book from her mother and everyone in Jackson, she is nervous asking the black women for help but eventually she gets the help she needs, She tells her mom and gets more support building her confidence and courage, and seeing Stuart also help Skeeter’s courage. Towards the end of the movie Stuart finds out about the book and does not approve of what she is doing and leaves her, at this point Skeeter loses what her goal was in the beginning, she got caught up in making her mother happy at the same time of perusing her dreams.

Skeeter phelan is not your typical white Jackson woman, returning to Jackson from college she get a job for the local newspaperr While every other white woman in Jackson is married and starting a family, her mother wishes she could just be like the rest of them, Skeeter is not a cliché because of this, she is breaking the social norms of Jackson and creating a life of her own instead of a life that was set up for here. Skeeter is also not cliché is the way she looks, she is skinny, tall and beautiful but since her hair does not look like every other woman’s hair she believes this is the reason that no man wants hers Skeeter’s morn spends a lot of money on hair straitening system from New York to make Skeeter look “normal” for her fist date with Stuart.

In this movie Skeeter does not show any signs of being cliche, she makes a point to be different from the rest of Jackson. While finding her courage throughout the movie Skeeter overcomes many struggles and with the help from her friends she finds her confidence. She tells her mother that what is really important right now is writing her book instead of finding a husband, she also stands up to her childhood friend who has changed for the worse. Skeeter sees that if the black women can find courage in themselves and tell the truth about how they are being treated Skeeter can also find courage in herself, Skeeter is not they typical Jackson woman and this makes her character not cliché at all.

Do Family Friendly Policies Hurt Men?

But as companies add these benefits, some male employees ( and some childless women as well) have complained that the company Is spending money on benefits that flow to some workers at the expense ( at least theoretically) of others. Some men have even complained that fathers don’t get assistance with child care or an opportunity to bring their babies to work. In fact, In the united States, companies do have to extend the same benefits to fathers as to mothers (except, of course, that if a mother is disabled after childbirth, she is the one who gets the usability benefit).

But men note that it is women who are more likely to use these benefits, even though studies show that men are experiencing more work- life conflict than male workers did a few decades ago. And as more pregnant women stay on the job, the disparity is as obvious as the bulging bellies.

The best way to distribute the cost and benefits of flexibility is to offer to every employee that may need it. Abortion: Pros, Cons and Propaganda

Abortion: Pros, Cons and Propaganda Abortion is a very controversial matter in our society. In the United States it is legal to abort a baby up until the day of birth. An abortion is the ending of pregnancy before birth which results in the death of an embryo or a fetus. Many people consider abortion as cruel as murder. Although some might say abortion is justifiable, others believe that no one but God has the right to take someone’s life. However, supporters of abortion do not consider an unborn child a person who must be protected. With an issue like abortion, there is a difficulty in determining if it is right or wrong.

There are many sides and arguments to this matter and the media often portrays a very negative side to the choice of abortion. The media tends to be biased and against the issue of abortion. I believe that the media is very influential on our society today. In 1973, there was a U. S Supreme Court Case known as Roe versus Wade. This case legalized abortion in The United States. They ruled that babies are not legal “persons” and from that point on, babies have had no rights or protection under The Constitution of The United States of America.

By extension, a woman has a right to make decisions that involve her body and the government should not try to enforce any type of regulation on a woman’s reproductive system. The government should not impose on the wishes of what a woman wants just as the media should not impose or show bias towards the issue. The abortion issue seems to be a very clear and consistent bias. Billboards, magazine ads, and television commercials have all portrayed images of innocent babies staring, with boldfaced words around them saying things like “With your tax dollars used for abortion … how many more children will be lost? Another bias ad propaganda is a cartoon image with a woman in her third trimester saying “How dare you challenge my right to kill this thing? No one can stop me from doing whatever I want with my body! ” Under this illustration are the words “Liberal compassion at 36 weeks. ” These uses of ad hominems are clearly showing the negative way people view the controversial topic of abortion. Even go as far as to “stereotype” those for abortion as “Liberalist”, showing a fallacy based on something completely irrelevant.

Popular teen television programs such as MTV have shown videos featuring a rapper/singer as a spirit of what appears as a baby-to-be following a woman into an abortion clinic and begging her to let him live. There is an abundance of imagery in the video to make an abortion look as violent and terrifying as possible. So teens seeing this are definitely going to assume the worst about abortions and also think that going through with a pregnancy is the only justifiable thing to do because the video not only makes this seem completely terrifying, but also because the baby would have grown up to be something great, famous.

So of course it is very hard to not think about what the child would-have-been. The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy states that there are “750,000 teen pregnancies annually. Only seven percent of abortions are because of rape, incest, and possible health concerns to the mother or baby. The other ninety-three percent of people who choose abortion do it for social, personal, and economic reasons. Pregnancy happens every day, planned or unplanned. Unplanned and unwanted pregnancies make abortion a sufficient option for what is basically another way out of a less than ideal situation for some people.

Although women have a hard time choosing abortion as an option for unwanted pregnancies, they have been making the choice for a long time. The MTV video ad mentioned above also depicts a situation of a man criticizing a woman about her choice until she gives in and makes the choice and chooses what he wants (abortion). This anti-abortion propaganda depicts women to be unable and incapable of following their desires because of a man’s control, belittling women. Women are hardly just people who listen to what is suggested by a man instead of going with their desires and intuitions.

The woman, who would be going through the actual “labor” of continuing a pregnancy, and delivering a baby, bringing it up, parenting it well, in addition to other obligations she has to do in her daily life are all things they have to consider. This alternative should be the woman’s decision, after given thought of course. It should not be a result of the man’s decision for her. The positives that come from the option of abortion are plentiful for women seeking an alternative.

Women that do not choose to have sexual encounters, but yet have it forced upon them, rape victims, have a way out of an extremely terrifying situation. Pregnant women with potentially fatal or other health concerns can consider abortion to be their “lifesaver” of sorts. If there was ever an attempt to ban abortions, the percentage of illegal and dangerous procedures of aborting a pregnancy would go up, therefore causing the cost of the procedure to increase because of accountability. A babies’ life solely depends on its’ mother and a mother needs to be healthy and capable to take on motherhood.

It should ultimately be her choice. “Pro-Choice” supporters, which are supporters of abortion, see a woman’s right to choose as central to all of the controversy and believe women’s rights are being jeopardized when the right to an abortion is taken away. Of course the people against abortion, people that are for “Pro-Life”, feel that an unborn baby is more than just potential life: they feel that an unborn baby is meaningful human life. They side with the theory that no person should have the right to decide if another human life is allowed to live or die.

Abortion is clearly immoral to them. Pro-Life propaganda refers to Planned Parenthood, a healthcare clinic that offers abortion procedures, as an “abortion mill” and a “killing chamber. ” The Center for Disease Control has statistics showing approximately 1,313,000 abortions in the United States alone. Abortions can cause severe side effects. Many complications can occur and these include vomiting, infections, severe bleeding, nausea, hemorrhages, and ironically death. These are very serious risks that show the obvious distaste of this controversial issue.

The banning of abortion would save the lives of thousands of unborn babies each year and would cut out the chances of women who are undergoing this risky procedure from the possibilities of such severe side effects. The media uses propaganda and other fallacies to cloud ones’ judgment(s) and make people believe things that might not necessarily be true. Propaganda makes things that seem one way look completely different or make things sound more drastic than they really are. Rhetorical appeals, slanting words and propaganda affect everyone in the world today. These logical fallacies are often times absurd.

For example, a billboard shows a baby and next to it in huge bolded letters, are the words “Endangered Species. ” These techniques are often drastic and dramatic, however, the majority of the time, they definitely get their point across. Whether someone thinks abortion is right or wrong, it will always be around. Legal or illegal it will continue to happen. The media will continue to downgrade abortions and the people that believe in them. It is obvious that there are few people in this world that are for this issue but it is not right to place judgement on someone ithout knowing their situation, and even then, who is anyone to judge what someone else believes is in their best interest? I would say absolutely no one has that right. While the issue of abortion is so controversial, it makes it nearly impossible to talk about and possibly see the “positives” that come from it, rather than just questioning it. People will have their opinions, primarily on the basis of their morals or ethnically, that is how they will look at this issue. The majority will have an unwillingness to change their view(s).

On the hopeful side, it is possible that because society and the media portray abortion so negatively, adoption rates will increase and fewer lives are left unharmed to the decision of abortion. Female roles in fifth business

Davies chronologically traces the psyche of Duncan Ramsey as he matures with the guidance of significant female characters in his life. In “Fifth Business,” Robertson Davies uses the characterization of Mrs.. Ramsey, Diana Margaret, and Mary Dumpster, to emphasize the influence women have in the maturation of man. The first major influence on Dunned life Is his mother, Mrs.. Ramsey. She Is the first maternal influence on Dunn and forms him into a person that takes control of his own life. Mrs.. Ramsey Is characterized as a determined, strict and controlling person with a Lonnie spills. (Davies 16). Her parental role In gulden and loving her son, however, drastically changes as the focus of her love Is altered In the Introduction of Paul Dumpster. This is evident, when Dunn states “l began to believe that I was more responsible for the birth of Paul Dumpster than were his parents, Part of that dreadful fate would undoubtedly be rejection by my mother” (Davies 17). Unquestionably, Mrs.. Armada’s love and affection begins to be directed towards the Tempter’s family instead of her own household.

Dunne’s lack of motherly affection leaves him with a sense of alienation as he “yearned for (his) mother’s love”(Davies 31). The lack of motherhood initiates Dunned feeling of isolation, and forces Dunn to mature faster. Consequently Dunn begins to feel resentment towards his mother who Is unable to provide the necessary attention and love an adolescent boy needs. The maltreatment cast upon Dunn by his mother Is responsible for his deep Isolation, his self-controlling mentality, and his stance on women. Secondly, Diana

Margaret plays a significant role in the novel as Dunned first meaningful and realistic love, and a second maternal female in Dunne’s life. Diana nursed Dunn back to life, after he was nearly left to die in the war. Diana is characterized as Dunned second mother, as she brings him back to life, re-teaches him the essentials of life, and renames him, Duncan. Diana catalysts Duenna’s maturing process, as she initiated him into the world of manhood, sexually, and mentally as he began to form his own decisions.

Moreover, to complete his transformation she decides that he should hanged his name to Duncan, which mentally gives him the psychological ambition to complete and realize his transformation into a new person in stating “l liked the Idea of a new name; It suggested new freedom and new personality” (Davies 90). Distinctly, being with Diana has made him think about himself for once In life and made him realize that he loves her unconditionally, however, Duncan states “she drives Duncan away from her, as he knows that their relationship could not have lasted.

Finally, throughout the novel, Mary Dumpster has an impacting role in the Roth of Duncan Ramsey. Mary teaches Dunn to disregard the moral rules of society, and to behave in a manner that is unselfish and for the betterment of others. Dunn admires Mary Tempter’s unorthodox actions, as “the stranger her conduct became, and the more the village pitied and dismissed her, the worse my (Dunned) obsession grew. “(Davies 24). Dunn sees past the Judgments of society, and perceives Mary as a saint. In the eyes of Dunn, Mary had performed three miracles, in which to him, classifies Mary as saint-like.

However, societal views on her miraculous” actions suggest that Mary Dumpster is a “Fools saint,” (Davies 131). Society prejudges Mary as they believe rather than her actions stemming from the goodness of her heart, they are instead driven by insanity. Mary is Dunned inspiration for his intrigue of the path of mythology, saints and longing for knowledge and inner spirituality. To conclude, Davies displays the importance that female roles have in shaping the growth of man. As Duncan proceeds to transform, and mature throughout his life, he is guided by the women he encounters.

The reader visualizes how Duncan matures and discovers more about his identity with the help of womanly aid. Dunn is initially perceived as a blank canvas as a child, however, as he matures throughout his life, he constantly is structured, re-shaped and painted into an ever-changing work of art, with maternal and female roles as his artist. Davies uses Duenna’s self-discovery to explain that the behavior of a man as he matures is a product of female insight and womanly assistance. Work Cited Davies, Robertson: “Fifth Business”

Antenatal Leaflet Plan

I have been asked as my resource task to make an antenatal leaflet for a young mother to help her with her pregnancy.

Antenatal care is important for a pregnant mother because it makes sure that both the baby and the mother are well and that the pregnancy is all going well and if the mother has any questions or problems, she can ask her GP.

The information I will include in the leaflet will be made suitable for a young pregnant mother by making to leaflet look attractive and interesting. I will use colour and pictures to also make it look eye-catching and stand out so that if there are lots of other leaflets to choose from, the mother will choose mine.

I will make sure that the writing is not too small and I will also make the font simple and easy to read. I will also try not to put in too much writing which may even put the mother off reading the leaflet.

The type of information which I will put inside the leaflet will be about and give advice on:

o Smoking

o Clothing and footwear

o Diet

o Medicines and drugs

o Hygiene

o Rest and exercise

o Benefits

I will try to make the leaflet look eye-catching by using pictures and animation. On the front of the leaflet I will put a photo of a young mother with a baby and throughout the leaflet I will include pictures of pregnant mothers so that the young mother feels as comfortable as possible with how she looks and so she knows she looks normal for someone who is pregnant.

The information and pictures which I will put into my leaflet will be from:

o Internet as there is a large variety of information and it is easy to access.

o Text books as I know it’s all accurate

o From other antenatal leaflets as I know there is a large variety

o Parents who have has children as they have had experience

o And lastly magazines as they have a lot if information inside them.

When I have finished I will design 5 questionnaires and give them to different people who have had children and who haven’t and the leaflets will help me evaluate my leaflet.

My plan of action is:

o Collect information from different sources

o Select relevant information which is needed for leaflet

o Make leaflet using information I have selected

o Evaluate leaflet using questionnaires

o Hand in my finished leaflet by the deadline.
