My Personal Career Aspirations Towards Becoming a Surgeon

Friends and family are the most important thing that should be in the highest perspective of your life. They will always be there for you and stand by you no matter what. Also, education is very important because without education you can have the whole world, but people will treat you like trash because to them you are an illiterate person.

Ten to fifteen years from now I want to already have my own family and support my parents. want my kids to go to the best school. Since I am the only child, always got the attention from both my parents and want the same thing for my kids. The type of career that will help me in my pursuit of high standards is to become a surgeon. This high profile job is what I see myself doing that gets paid a lot to benefit my family while saving lives and giving me personal satisfaction and peace.

Surgery is a highly respectable and specialized profession that helps fix in injuries or inconvenience people. One person writes in Coin that “Surgery is a medical specialty devoted to correcting deformities, repairing injuries, preventing disease and improving functions of patients. Surgery is broken down into groups of subspecialties these include colon surgery, general surgery, [and], neurological surgery” (p. 2 Occupation Description). It is very respectable profession because through all the rigorous training you are left with someone life on the line. With another person life to save, you get to see the way people trust you.

To become a surgeon you need to be very hardworking person, and be able think on your feet. One writer list skills of a surgeon in Coin which says “writing concisely, being able to remain calm, being patient, following instructions, handling challenging situations, paying attention to and handling details, using logical reasoning to perform scientific, mathematical and technical work, working with your hands, working in a medical setting” (p.13 Transferable Skills, Interests & Abilities). You need to be able to look a situation and think about a way to find a solution to it due to the fact that not every procedure and situation are the same, and different situation require different approach.

You also need to be able to work with your hands which mean you need to be eye- hand coordination and to be able to critically think through. Even though getting a certificate to be a certified surgeon is highly voluntary and not forced, but it is highly recommended. One writer says in the Encyclopedia of Careers and Vocational Guidance that “the American Board of Surgery Inc. administers board certification in surgery. While certification is a voluntary procedure, however it is highly recommended. (p. 534 Career and Vocational Guidance). To get your certification you have to prove that you went to a creditable medical school, also you have to complete your residency and take a written board exam be able to get your certificate (p. 534 Career and Vocational Guidance).

Even though you may get your certificate you will have to make sure you renew your certificate every 10 years, because since there are many new innovations of medicine the board wants to make sure you are keeping up to dates of all the new innovation and scientific procedures in the medical world (p. 534 Career and Vocational Guidance).

Taking many sciences classes will be helpful during your high school years; such as “biology, chemistry, computer science, physics, [and] physiology” because it will help you build up your background knowledge on your proposed career (p. 18 Suggested High School Subjects). Also English is very important for your foundation in medicine, because it helps you learn how to write your reports and know how to communicate with your fellow physicians or patients. Becoming a surgeon is one of the most rigorous educational training you have to go through before you can get your certificate, and it doesn’t just stop there.

In Texas reality check one author states that “formal education and training requirements for physicians are among the most demanding of any occupation — 4 years of undergraduate school, 4 years of medical school, and 3 to 8 years of internship and residency, depending on the specialty selected.” (p. 4 training).

You still have to keep yourself updated with all the latest new innovations of medicine and also go to many medical seminars to renew your certificate. After completing undergraduate school and passing the MCAT you go to medical school for four years. This time period is the most critical because it gives you an insight of what you might want to later on specialize in.

During the first two years of medical school “students spend most of the first 2 years of medical school in laboratories and classroom. [Then] during their last 2 years, students work with patients under the supervision of experienced physicians in hospitals and clinics through rotations in internal medicine, family practice, and surgery, they gain experience in the diagnosis and treatment of illness” (p.4 training).

Another profession that can help me achieve the goal of becoming successful is to become a Physical Therapist. Physical therapists are called the medical healers who help people regain their health. Some of “their patients [can be people who were] involved in an accident, stroke, fractures, and heart disease” (p. 2 Occupation Description). They “treat patients who have disabilities because of disease, injury, or loss of a body part by using exercise, cold, [and] water.

Through these methods, physical therapist provides relief from pain and helps the patient develop strength, mobility, and coordination” (p. 2 Occupation Description). To become a physical therapist you will have to go through four years of college. After your undergraduate you have to obtain a doctorate degree in physical therapist which is another four years (p. 17 Licensure and Special Requirements). When you finish your doctorate you have to take your National Physical Therapy Examination which lets you have your certification of becoming a therapist (p. 17 Licensure and Special Requirements). You can also specialize in physical therapist by becoming a pediatrics therapist, who works with kids or also a sports therapist who works in sport. (p. 17 Licensure and Special Requirements).
