Rogerian Argument Drilling in ANWR

However, drilling in this land also brings the possibility of destroying the habitat of birds that migrate to this area yearly, caribou that use this haven as a calving ground, fish that fill the rivers and lakes, as well as grizzly bears, wolves, elk and hundreds of other species that depend on this habitat for food, shelter and safety. There is no debate that there are passionate debates, important facts and amazing possibilities that concern both sides of this argument. And even If it were possible to remove political agenda from the table, It would still be a very difficult debate to win for either side.

My hopes are to come to a conclusion that would benefit both parties Involved. I strongly feel that any drilling In this area would be detrimental to the surrounding area, as well as bring possible harm to the countless animals, birds and fish that use this safe haven yearly for migration, calving and egg laying and feeding. The decision to either drill or not to drill may not have a direct impact on us now, but in the years to come, good or bad, we will all see the changes that this decision will have resulted in.

There are many others, like you, that believe that drilling in INWARD is the perfect elution to our current economic situation. The possibilities of new Jobs and freedom from purchasing oil from unstable and hostile countries Is tempting and seems like a wonderful alternative to our current circumstances. Eve read reports that state that we could create up to 736,000 new Jobs. The assessment of these numbers was broken down Into Jobs such as manufacturing, milling, trade, services and construction.

In addition the plethora of new employment opportunities there are reports that show that drilling in INWARD could produce up to 1,000,000 barrels of oil a day. These same reports claim that producing such a large amount of oil each day would replace the oil that we purchase from Saudi Arabia, which in turn would put about $50,000,000 back into the united States Economy. There are many believable reports that technology has far advanced itself in relation to the process of drilling oil and that the new equipment and processes for obtaining the oil from underground would be incredibly safe and urn-invasive to the surrounding area.

In addition, I understand that the size of the area that is being considered for drilling Is about the size of the state of South Carolina and that the land Is barren, windswept and that this particular area Is desolate of any wildlife or vegetation. The Alaskan National seems like a good idea. In fact, I think it’s quite tempting to dream of one day not to reduce the U. S. Federal deficit and at the same time boosting the local economy and putting American’s back to work. I can see the benefits to drilling in this land if the results would be as extensive as they appear to be in these reports.

Of course for every report that lists the benefits of drilling, there is another that refutes it. In doing my research I actually switched positions from being pro-drilling to anti- drilling. I realized that although the process of drilling in recent years has become a much safer method for both the driller and the surrounding area, there were still too many possibilities of problems for the wildlife and vegetation that call the area home. Take for example the event that occurred in 1989.

The Interior Department’s stamp of approval for drilling in this oil rich land became a catalyst for a movement among the Senate drill. On March 24, 1989, Just days after the report from the Interior Department, the Exxon Valued spill occurred dumping 11 million gallons of crude oil over thousands of miles of California coastline. According to the National Wildlife Federation, a very reputable source, marine life still hasn’t completely recovered from this monstrous oil spill. At the time of the spill it was discovered that thousands of birds had died of hypothermia due to the coat of oil covering their feathers.

Sea turtles were stranded in oily waters, including the endangered Kemps riddle sea turtles. Whales and fish were killed and the ones that survived had ingested the oil which is known to cause ulcers and even internal bleeding. Research shows that the effects of the oil can even affect the offspring of these marine animals. Dolphins were studied for years and had shown to be very ill. In addition the marine animals, the coral and reefs were also affected by the oil. Many of these amazing formations were shown to be dying or dead.

The loss of these underwater habitats caused many surviving marine animals to be homeless which leaves them open to predators. Another oil spill like this could be catastrophic to these marine animals as well as our gashing industries as well as our tourism. It would be awful to create thousands of jobs in order to drill oil and then cost thousands of others their Jobs because of an oil spill. I understand that this is Just a possibility, but I feel it is definitely some to be considered when discussing the safety of drilling in INWARD.

No one can promise that this won’t happen again. I do realize that there are new ways to prevent a spill and to clean up a spill once it has happened. For example we now know oaf bacteria that have been found to eat the oil which is very promising, however, cleaning up an oil pill in Alaska can provide its own special challenges with the freezing weather and ice. Another important fact to consider when deciding to support drilling in INWARD is whether or not the benefits of drilling in this reserve would out way the cost.

I wondered if there would be enough oil produced to actually realize the hope of becoming free from our dependence on the unstable oil producing countries that we rely on so heavily for fuel. There are many reputable sources including an article on the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge US Fish and Wildlife Services website that claim hat we would not see any oil production for about 10 years after drilling begins. There is no doubt that the land in this region of Alaska is filled with an abundance of oil. We’ve known about the existence of oil in this land for years.

Exactly how much of an abundance, however, still remains to be seen. It is anyone’s guess as to how much oil currently lies beneath the land. This is very contradictory to pro-drilling supporters of drilling in INWARD report that the oil companies are using a much safer method of drilling the oil at this time, there is not much information regarding the new technique that is being referred to. It is however hinted to be related to the underground oil pipes that have been built. It evens seems like the Alaskan residents are split on this issue. On one hand it would create Jobs and give a boost to the economy.

On the other hand however there is the possibility of their main source of food, the fish and seals, may actually move father away in order to escape the pollutants and toxins in the air. Either way you look at the situation, there are pros and cons to drilling for oil in INWARD. The beautiful countryside is blossoming with hundreds upon hundreds of mammals such as the black grizzly, the caribou and he elk, migrating birds such as ducks, geese and quail and sea creatures galore versus the possibility of a robust economy, American Jobs and less dependency on other countries.

They are both very important issues to consider and should not be taken lightly. This world is a precious gift that we leave for our children and it is our job to make sure that we protect the culture of Alaska, with respect to the innovations and possibilities of providing for our countries future as well. It may be time to turn our attention to a new source of energy. As technology advances, so does our awareness of the possibilities that await us. Maybe it is time to look ahead to advancements that could completely terminate our dependency on hostile, foreign countries for our fuel demands.

I think that it would be a great compromise to spend our time, resources and technology to develop a fuel source that we know we could depend on. The earth’s oil sources will eventually run dry. There will come a point when we will have to look elsewhere to fuel our cars and to heat our homes. It’s my opinion that we should begin looking for that next energy source now. There are many renewable resources such as wind, sun, water as well as one that is very citing. Celluloses ethanol is a source that has been used for a few years now.

This is a renewable energy source that is derived from fermented corn. This particular type of energy can be used to fuel cars and eventually homes as well. There is still research to do and it would take a lot of changes to make this a reality such as remodeling our vehicles so that they would run off of this type of fuel. This is not something that could happen overnight, but it is something that could be accomplished within 10 years, which subsequently is the amount of time it would aka for the United States to even begin reaping the benefits of drilling in INWARD.

Narrative Essay about Bp Oil Spill

Television if full of advertisement and propaganda. As well as the internet with advertisement popups and clips on the sides of every webpage. Propaganda is information put out by an organization or government to promote and idea or cause. Many of these are misleading and bias, trying to make you believe in the same things they do and convince you to participate in whatever cause they are in. Think about some of the commercials you seen on television such as news reports, movies, political ads, and recall ads.

The most memorable to me are recall ads such as lawyers making announcements for medicines and compensation. As well as when election time comes around and all of the runners are putting their names out there. Also, every day, watching the news on new crimes going on in the world and previews for my next favorite movie. Those are all different techniques of propaganda. The purpose of me writing this essay is to show you the propaganda in a simple informative commercial or newscast. My main focus will be on the BP oil spill.

The first sociology theory I will compare with is symbolic interactionism. Symbolic interactionism is the use of symbols or face to face interaction. The way that this relates to the BP oil spill is the way that the owner of the company, Kenneth R. Fineburg, said that he was going to help and compensate the victims of the oil spill. Commercials and speeches were made about his plans to pay back for the damage and loss of wages that his company had caused the Gulf of Mexico and victims.

The second theory will be functionalism. Functionalism is the relationship between parts of society. In this situation, the society came together and fought to be compensated to get their lost wages back. Claiming they have mortgages, bills, car payments, and children to pay for and they have not been working in 8 months. Citizens of the affected area appeared on news cast and commercials were made explaining their situations, trying to reach out to someone that they needed help.

The last theory is the conflict theory. Conflict theory means competition of scarce resources or the elite control the poor and weak. This relates to this situation as the big man, Mr. Fineburg, having the money and resources to help the people out with their lost wages. As, well his colleagues were trying to tell him that he was over compensating the victims. They had all of the control over whether or not the victims were going to be able to get paid and bailed out of this mess that one man was responsible for.

In conclusion, propaganda was used in ways to reach out to people about the real problems going on in the Gulf of Mexico during the time of the BP oil spill. I used the 3 main theories of sociology to compare how each of them relates to the oil spill. The rich over powering the poor, how society came together to get help, and the interaction between the people when the word needed to be put out. RESOURCE Schwartz, J. (2011, February 17). New Invention

It is recommended that every person should consume eight glasses of water a day. For this project, we are given the ability to create anything we wanted with the simple request that we highlight the affects it would have. If I could create anything in the world, I would pawn the invention of a machine that had the capability to filter and cleanse any scale of water at any given moment immediately. Now many people will say that I should create something beneficial to myself, such as a time machine, or a teleportation device of some sort.

But one of the major benefits of this machine is that not only does it benefit every person individually, but it benefits our entire world on a grander scale. One of the key elements that this machine can do, is it can cleanse and purify any amount of water, meaning, it will be able to filter masses of water such as beaches and rivers. Due to the fact that the Earth’s surface is compromised of seventy percent water, many people lack to realize that water is such a key component in our lives. The human body can live without food for a month, but can only survive without water for a week.

Now this machine will benefit the individual on personal scale by allowing every person to have safe, consumable water regardless of their location. In public places, there are opportunities to drink water from water fountains. But the cleanliness of the water coming from these drinking fountains is typically a concern that many people have. When people swim for hours at a time, they become dehydrated craving water. But the consumption of chlorine-infested water or beach water is never known to be safe for anyone.

Now with the ultimate water purifying machine, water can be easily accessible for anyone at anytime. Thus, this supports the hydrating of everyone as well as the steady inclination of water consumption. The United States utilizes about three-hundred and forty six million gallons of fresh water every day. Fortunately for our nation, there isn’t a dire need for clean water. But with the amount of oils spills, pollution of air, these accumulations of events have brought our nation to an urgent call for the cleansing and purifying of our water.

Fortunately for our nation, the United States utilizes eighty percent of its water for irrigation and thermoelectric power. But with this invention, we can further the beneficial and positive uses that our nation utilizes water for. With this invention, we can purify the surrounding water bodies so that our wildlife in the ocean can resist fatality from pollution of our waters such as oil spills and toxic wastes. This invention can also eliminate water-borne illnesses that spread in public water arenas such as swimming pools, lakes, and beaches.

Following the elimination of oil spills, toxic waste dumps, and other negative impact happenings from the United States, this prevents them from spreading to other areas of the Earth as well as preserving the oceanic animal lives. On a worldwide scale, more than one billion people lack a reliable source providing safe, drinking water. Unfortunately, our world lacks the resources to supply the huge demand and need for water. As much as eighty percent of our world’s illnesses derived from water-borne illnesses. In poverty-stricken areas, the consumption of dirty water or even lack of water to consume is fairly common.

With this invention, the placement of this machine in poverty-stricken areas will purify the waters, supply the needy with clean and consumable water, and lead those nations away from hunger. Evidently, an invention that revolves around the cleansing and purifying of water bodies is a major benefit personally, towards our nation, and in the grander scheme, towards our entire world. A machine that could potentially supply those in need with clean water for their consumption, that could cleanse the polluted waters, and that could make a major push towards a healthy dosage of water consumption, could very well result in a life-changing move.

This invention will provide a means of consumable water at any place, reassured of its cleanliness and pure quality. This invention will support our wildlife in the ocean by ridding the oceans and bodies of water in our nation, of its toxic wastes and spills that threaten their lives. This invention will eliminate the water deprived bodies of the poor, providing them with clean water, and aiding them in drinking water to rid their bodies of diseases and deficiencies. Clearly, the invention of this machine will aid our nation in a push for a better world.

Reaching Effects Of The Gulf Oil Spill Environmental Sciences Essay

On April 20, 2010 an detonation occurred at the British Petroleum drill rig located in the Gulf of Mexico. The detonation at the drill rig Deepwater Horizon led to the Macondo good to leak out oil. This was to go the 2nd most detrimental environmental catastrophe in the universe and the worst environmental calamity in U.S. history. The United States Minerals Management Service ( USMMS ) recorded that eighteen out of 39 runawaies in the Gulf of Mexico are caused by cement jobs ( Kerr et al. , 674 ) . The destructive oil spill was either created by improper support with cement or a malfunction in the runaway preventer used to supervise the oil Wellss. Before the boring started, British Petroleum ( BP ) predicted that if the undertaking were to travel incorrect it would let go of about 162,000 barrels per twenty-four hours. When the undertaking did neglect the oil started to flux out at about 1,000 barrels per twenty-four hours so farther rose to 5,000 barrels per twenty-four hours ( Kerr et al. , 674 ) . To halt the flow of the oil from the Macondo Well, Deepwater Horizon would hold to bore back into the sea floor to do a new hole and so make full the hole with clay to kill the flow of the oil. The procedure took about three months to decide and in this clip the undermentioned shorelines were affected: Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. The spill has affected biomes, ecosystems, nutrient ironss and carnal populations in all of these countries. A biome is a biotic factor characterized by clime and geographically belongings and the black spill hideously affected the marine biome, which intern annihilated two ecosystems: the coastal and Marine ecosystems. This death leads to the arrested development of effectivity of all nutrient ironss. Several anticipations can be made on how the environmental catastrophe will be affected from, five, 10 or twenty old ages from now. Many resources and environmental programs by the authorities and charity organisation are in consequence to assist with control and to assist salvage the environmental by: acquiring rid of the oil spill, salvaging the animate beings and reconstructing their ecosystems in the different biomes.

The Gulf of Mexico spill perilously affected the marine biome. As the oil start to lift and dispersants are added to the oil, they start to do the close shore soft deposits and the deep-sea deposits to decease out. Near shore soft deposits are beaches, salt fens, sea grass beds and mangrove swamps. They are extremely productive for ecosystems and consist of plentiful organic affair. The deep-sea deposits are boggy, flaxen countries chiefly located on the Continental inclines, Continental rises and abyssal fields ( Textbook ) . Estuaries and coral reefs are perceptive countries if impacted by oil rosin. They provide protection, eating, and populating for a many beings. About “ 90 per centum of marine species in the gulf depend on coastal estuaries ” largely located in Louisiana ( Crowley, 2010 ) . Louisiana was hit hard by the oil spill greatly impacting salt fens and barrier islands. The dispersants added to the oil causes it turn to tar balls which possible starts to look on beaches and stick to the workss. The big sums of oil on the coastal deposit will do the salt fen grasses and animate beings to decease out ( Kerr et al. , 962 ) . The oil sedimentations can harm the workss and causes the deposit to gnaw. If the deposit starts gnawing the workss will non travel through photosynthesis or gas exchange ( Kerr et al. , 675 ) . This may do the whole ecosystem to fall apart, because many beings may go unable to acquire nutrient and alimentary supply from the contaminated surrounding environment ( How Does the BP Oil Spill, 2010 ) .

Harmonizing to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, research workers say that “ direct contact with an oil spill may take to coral decease, but depending on coral species, growing signifier, life phase, and continuance of oil exposure ( How does an Oil Spill Affect Coral Reefs, 2010 ) . ” Scientists say corals that are exposed at different concentration degrees of oil may kill coral but may non be instant. It would instead be a long-run consequence after the exposure has ended. Scientists are stating, the deep-sea corals are non affected by the oil spill and hardly touched by it ( How does an Oil Spill Affect Coral Reefs, 2010 ) . Steve Ross, a research worker from the Center for Marine Science at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, says, “ Originally, when we saw the flight for the oil spill and where it was traveling, we were really concerned that these home grounds would be impacted ( Skoloff, 2010 ) . ” Ross and other research workers from his squad are carry oning a research to see if the corals have been damaged or will it be a long-run impact based on the reproduction rates. Ross said “ We thought surely that… we would see marks of harm and we ‘re really pleased to state so far, in these locations, we have n’t seen a big graduated table harm to the coral home grounds. We ‘re still looking, but so far, it ‘s good ( Skoloff, 2010 ) . ” As the marine biome are affected by the oil spill, this to boot affects two types of ecosystems in the country.

The two ecosystems, marine ecosystem and coastal ecosystem, are extremely disrupted by the oil spill doing nutrient ironss to be non as efficient. The impact of the environment by dispersants of oil is greatly effectual, and the scientists are worried the harm would jeopardize the nutrient web ( Layers of Life, 2010 ) . In the Marine ecosystem, the oil started to flux out of the Macondo Well each twenty-four hours, it started to impact different Marine beds. The marine biome consists of four Marine zones, but merely three zones were affected by the oil spill: the epipelagic zone, mesopelagic zone, and bathypelagic zone ( Textbook ) . Microscopic droplets from the Macondo Well endanger the aquatic life. The heavier oil compounds would either absorb to the deposit or turn into pitch balls and rinse up to the shore or autumn to the seafloor. When dispersants are added to the oil, it breaks down the oil and forestalling it to come on land. The sunshine can assist extinguish the volatile oil compounds. As the huge figure of phytoplankton, fish eggs, and larvae are affected, they are an indispensable to giants, fish, and other beings. They are the bases of the nutrient concatenation life at the epipelagic zone. The microscopic oil and methane gas from the spill do the plankton to go hypoxic-depleted of O ( Bourne Jr. , 51 ) . As the phytoplankton is the bases for the marine ecosystem nutrient web, by being effected by the oil spill, the nutrient web would non be every bit efficient as it would be because other animate beings and beings are dependent on them. Marine scientist, Rob Condon, says, “ You change the base of the nutrient web, it ‘s traveling to ruffle through the full nutrient web and finally it ‘s traveling to impact fishing and present a batch of contaminations into the nutrient web ( Brown and Masti, 2010 ) . ” Like runt, pediculosis pubis, tuna, or ruddy snapper provender on phytoplankton, these animate beings would decease out because the deficiency of foods in the system doing other animate beings to endure which will interrupt down the nutrient web. Pyrosomes are another indispensable base of foods for animate beings. If they are effected it would do a rippling in the nutrient web which would consequence on polo-necks and larger fishes ( Brown and Masti, 2010 ) . The ecosystem would get down to deteriorate because of the deficiency of foods and addendum eating for beings.

Correspondingly the oil injuries sea birds, which the H2O soaks through their plumes, doing them cold, taking to hyperthermia, and harder to derive nutrient. The mahimahis are to endure from organ harm from take a breathing the toxic bluess or consuming the oil. As for the sea turtles they are at high hazard because they feed at the oil surface. The applied scientists try to utilize dispersants by the well so the sea birds and mammals are protected from the oil but on the other manus it can impact a Bluefin tuna or other fishes from the toxic consequence ( Kerr et al. , 675 ) . The counter current gas exchange would impact the fish because of less O in the H2O doing the blood to have O, which leads to the decease of fishes ( Textbook ) . Scientists from National Institute for Undersea Science and Technology ( NIUST ) with several other establishments will follow oil over the following couple months as it moves through the nutrient concatenation from individual celled algae to tuna fish ( Kerr et al. , 963 ) . As the concentration of the methane gas additions, there is a fright that there will be oxygen depletion making “ dead zones ” in the ecosystem where no marine life to can remain. The cause of dead zones is by algae start to organize where they feed on the foods of methane on high concentration. Bacteria so eat the algae, which causes the depletion in O. Marine life, such as fish, is non able to last in this environment which scientists called it “ dead zones ” ( McNulty, 2010 ) . The marine ecosystem is extremely at hazard due to the oil, gas or dispersants. With all the effects on the system it affects the nutrient concatenation and how the marine life is seeking to last utilizing other resources or migrating out of the oil spill environment. This affects how they would accommodate to new countries in the ocean.

The Rhizophora mangle wood, fresh H2O, salt H2O environment to the coral reefs make a nourishment country and supply a home ground for wildlife and protection from the pollution. The coastal ecosystem is affected as the oil moves in closer to the shore. The animate beings such as birds, boodles, oysters and corals are extremely at hazard because of the toxic consequence in their system. As boodles and oysters can be a beginning of nutrient to other beings, like otters or worlds, which live around the coastal country will impact the nutrient concatenation. Similarly, animate beings that unrecorded by seawater fens, coastal prairies, mangrove forest and hayfields and are dependent on workss as a primary beginning of foods will be affected due to the deficiency of gas exchange and photosynthesis of the workss because of the oil toxic degrees in the workss. The coastal grass fens created for coastal Marine and mammals for life. The oil amendss water bird, polo-necks and marine mammals and perchance embryos and larvae of invertebrates and fish ( Weise and Rice, 2010 ) . Additionally, the emmets, crickets, and spiders are of import factors of the coastal nutrient web. They aid in dirt irrigation, seed dispersion, pollenation and nutrient beginning. If the insect population survives so fish and birds will last. If the fish and birds survive the community will last besides, but if insects do non last the system will fall apart ( Bui, 2010 ) . Felicia Coleman, from Florida State University Coastal and Marine Laboratory in St. Teresa, says, “ Panama City, Florida to Tampa, Florida is one of the largest bases of sea grass in the U.S. Those grasses contain likely the largest hatcheries and baby’s room land for piscaries in the Gulf of Mexico ( Weise and Rice, 2010 ) . ” This cause would impact the growing of new species of fishes and impact the nutrient web for consumers. There populating would be destroyed and would be difficult to accommodate to new countries due to the predation and environment. She besides says, “ One of the last pristine, most biologically diverse coastal home grounds in the state is about to acquire wiped out. And there ‘s non much we can make about it ( Weise and Rice, 2010 ) . ” There are legion beings that are affected by the spill.

One animate being that is extremely diminishing in size of population are the pelicans, chiefly the brown pelicans. As of mid-July 2010, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service ( FWS ) , the brown pelican was hit the hardest by the oil spill about 50 eight per centum of the pelicans that were either dead or injured ( Tangley, 2010 ) . The effects of oil on the brown pelicans are really detrimental to the organic structure. As the oil sticks to the plumes, it starts to lose the sealing oils that maintain them from acquiring cold. As the oil start to rub off and deteriorate, the brown pelicans could decease from hypothermia. If a thick coat of oil sticks to the organic structure, the bird will non be able fly either doing it to rinse up shore and dice. When the brown pelican provenders on marine life in the sea, such as fish, it can consume little sums of oil if the fish is contaminated. If everything in ecosystem is contaminated with, the birds will non able to feed and feed at that place immature and do low reproduction rates because they would decease ( Rosenberg, 2010 ) . If the tendency continues, the whole population of brown pelicans would decease out and would be considered as being on the endangered list once more as they have 50 old ages ago due to DDT pesticides in the late fiftiess. The DDT pesticide resided in contaminated fishes, this causes the reproduction of eggshells. The eggshells are thinned and during incubation the eggs would accidently check by the parents, doing them low reproduction in the country ( Tangley, 2010 ) . Surveies say, when affected by oil, they have a low to good endurance rates depending on the country they live in ( Rosenberg, 2010 ) . Cleaning the environment of the ecosystem and the brown pelicans would increase the survival rate.

The authorities and community have been addressed to the environmental crisis. The authorities should be involved in the oil catastrophe. The Environmental Defense Fund ( EDF ) has provided offer to the Obama disposal and Congress to retrieve the harm environment. Five stairss need to be taken: 1 ) to halt the flow of the oil and prevent making the shore, 2 ) design a long term clean up plan, 3 ) supply economic aid the fishermen, 4 ) proctor the short term effects of the spill by scientific research, and 5 ) supply a $ 4 billion budget to reconstruct the hundred square stat mis ecosystems. Obama has taken in consideration to go through a $ 4 billion exigency measure ( Crowley, 2010 ) . I truly suggest that the authorities should take this into consideration because it includes all parts of how the budget money would assist reconstruct the environment back to normal. Numerous AIDSs and financess were proposed authorities ; they should take a expression at the proposition and make their ain measure to assist with the oil spill calamity. I contemplate the British Petroleum should assist with the bulk of the financess of scientific research and assistance in Restoration of the environment. This would assist derive their regard back but plus assist the community and nature. The community should take in deliberation to be voluntaries and subscribe up with organisation to assist with attempts of the oil spill. They would assist clean animate beings, like birds, and the dust on the coastal shores, which will assist in the short-run effects of the ecosystem. The major organisations, such as: National Wildlife Federation, NOAA, Global Green and other organisations have been taken to consequence and assisting the damaged ecosystem. The community and organisations should work together to reconstruct the biome with the assistance of persons as voluntaries and the financess provided. Many scientists and research workers are assisting with the service of reconstructing of the biome. They are carry oning research and experiments and how they can supply aid to repair the jobs.

Expression at the long-run impact of the spill from five, 10, or twenty old ages from now will alter how the biome is working. Five old ages from now, the Restoration of the coastal land of workss and some animate beings will be conveying back the home ground to normal due to the fact the sunshine, H2O and heat will assist interrupt down some factors of the oil in the deposits, to boot aid of oil eating bacteriums ( Barcott, 71 ) . The marine ecosystem will still be damaged because of the monolithic sums of oil in the ocean, in different Marine zones. In ten old ages, some of the marine ecosystem, the epipelagic zone, will get down to better back to its normal map such as corals and animate beings reside in those parts of the system, because corals have a short-run consequence of the oil. As the twelvemonth ‘s advancement, in twenty old ages, half of the marine biome, the mesopelagic zone and some of bathypelagic zone, will be start map usually and the nutrient web will be efficient, making an betterment of reproduction and survival rate of animate beings and beings.

Bp Marketing Problem After Oil Spill

British Petroleum’s Marketing Problem Florida International University Summer 2011 Alex Del Veccio Yudith Torres BP Marketing Problem In April 20th, 2010 one of the worst environmental natural disasters that were brought on by a men happened. We are talking about the British petroleum Oil spill on the Golf Coast. The disaster not only affected the plants, animals and people living in the area but also the image of the company.

British Petroleum has been successful on creating a powerful brand image, being authentic to the core values of its business and building the goodwill of their customers, now BP is trying to save what is left after the disaster. The disaster leads to many angry people, including environmentalists, shareholders and the general public to create campaigns to bring down the company reputation. BP has been accused of 11 workers dead and 17, injured. The extent of the spill is about the size of Rhode Island, running across the northern Gulf of Mexico between the mouth of the Mississippi River and Florida.

The spill runs wide, threatening the coastlines, and deep, traveling beneath about 5,000 feet of water and 13,000 feet under the seabed. The Deepwater Horizon well is leaking 5,000 barrels per day, shutting down fishing across the affected areas, damaging fragile habitats and putting animals in peril. BP was also accused of trying to silence the scientists that were studying the effects of the oil spill, not allowing publishing researches done for the company; this clause was expressed in their contacts.

The entire situation has position BP with a bad corporate image in the entire world leading to customer to refuse buying its products. This crisis has result in a negative publicity, threatening the image of the company and having effects on people perception of the company and its products. BP has responded to the event, trying to diminish the severity of the contamination, in a desperate effort not to lose its social legitimacy and seen to being irresponsible and dishonest with the public.

These are a few of many pictures that were put out there by the media, making the problem even worse for British Petroleum, those images were directly associated with the corporation, death, contamination, social irresponsibility, unhappy people. BP has a huge problem, they need to make people to stop associating those images with its corporation and products, and recover its good name again. Consumer Behavior Issues as a result of BP the oil spill Consumer attitudes toward BP products were badly affected by the oil spill; there was not favorable opinion about the corporation resulting on the decline of consumer intentions to buy BP products.

BP oil spill has impacted purchasing behavior, the spill rattled the company, causing the stock to lose about half its value and prompting Tony Hayward CEO to resign and be replaced by Bob Dudley, But the company was able to get the oil gusher stopped and has been paying to repair the damage to the local economy. The company is paying to cleanup an estimated of $20 billion, as a result the company temporarily suspending its dividend, in another blow to investors. The dividends were reinstated in February 2011.

Despite the fact that many surveys has showed that people has no intention to boycott or switch from BP brand ( (Harrison) the consumer perception of the company was reflected on consumer willingness to invest on BP stocks, maybe because many of them were normative influenced altering their behavior to meet public opinion expectations. Consumer awareness has shifted dramatically when there is a catastrophe related to a big corporation such as British Petroleum, consumers has jointed forces and organized protests to show their disgruntlement with the corporation and pressing them to take full responsibility for the disaster.

The oil spill has had effected no only on consumer attitudes towards BP products, but to other industries too. Approximately 71% of consumers were still concerned about the safety of consuming seafood, and 23% reported they have reduced their seafood consumption as a result of the oil spill ( (Bianco) Consumer analysis Of British Petroleum after oil spill According to a Brand Index Survey, (Index, 2010) British Petroleum public image went below Goldman Sachs (and investment bank many feel contributed to the financial crisis’ in 2008). This Survey that came out in June 2010 show these findings.

Only Toyota who went through a massive recall shows worse. Many more surveys show that consumers were not please with British petroleum (eye, 2010) Following are s few notes from the article on the corporate eye’s website (eye, 2010): * From an Economist and YouGov survey: When it comes to trusting BP to “do the right thing in stopping the oil spill and cleaning it up,” 9% of respondents said they trust BP “a great deal” and 13% trust BP “quite a bit” while 20% have “only some” trust that BP will do the right thing, and another 20% said they have “very little” trust that BP will do the right thing.

The majority of respondents, 28%, trust BP “not at all. ”  The remaining respondents stated that they were not sure how they felt. * From the same Economist and YouGov survey: 65% of respondents believe that BP and other companies involved in the oil spill are “pointing the blame on others and avoiding responsibility” while just 35% believe BP and other companies involved are “doing whatever it takes to stop the spill and clean up the oil. ” * From a USA Today/Gallup poll: 34% of the respondents rated BP’s response to the spill as “poor” and 39% rated it as “very poor”.

Only 6% rated BP’s response as “very good” and 18% rated it “good. ” * From a Pew Research Center and National Journal Congressional Connection poll: 44% rated BP’s response to the oil spill as “poor” and 26% rated it “only fair” while 16% rated BP’s response “good” and 3% rated it “excellent. ” * From a CNN and Opinion Research Corp. poll: 76% of respondents disapprove of BP’s response to the oil spill and 24% percent approve. These surveys and many like them combined with massive protests and boycotts reshaped the Value of British petroleum as reaction to their stocks showed.

In late June in 2010 British petroleum’s stock fell to under 28 dollars per share. This was a major drop from there yearly high of over 61 dollars per share in February in 2010. While the consumer trend for the oil industry is still in high demand, British petroleum still loss revenue loss due to poor public perception and also lost revenue from the oil spill and cleanup efforts. According to this story BP has it work cut out for them financially (JACOBSON, 2011)– Almost $50 billion in lost market value. Its rivals’ stock is up almost 15 percent, while BP’s has been down roughly 25 percent.

Shares that were worth $60 a piece on April 20, 2010, are worth $46 today (JACOBSON, 2011). * Sales of $24 billion of the company’s assets to be set aside to help pay for claims and other costs. Gheit said roughly 10 percent of BP’s production and reserves were sold last year. Another $6 billion worth are expected to be sold this year (JACOBSON, 2011). * $3. 8 billion paid out in claims so far. That’s part of a $20 billion fund set aside under pressure from the government last year (JACOBSON, 2011). * Liabilities could swell by tens of billions more.

If BP is found to be criminally negligent (several investigations and reports have yet to be completed), the price tag could exceed $50 billion. (Contending their equipment and work played a major role in the cause of the accident, BP is suing Halliburton and TransOcean for billions of dollars as well. (JACOBSON, 2011)) However not all is lost for BP. As you look at the Global 500 (500, 2011) ranking of the top one hundred companies in the world. You will notice that six of the tops 10 are oil companies, including BP at number four.

This not only shows that oil is a very profitable industry and in high demand despite calls for alternative energy sources over the past decades. Unless such an alternative energy source can come about and service the billions of people who demand energy: the outlook in the oil industry will continue to be high. Which also means the oil industry will continue to be profitable. When we also add into the factor that developing countries have increased demand for oil and global demand for this resource is predicted to go from 41. million gallons per day to 86. 6 million gallons by the year 2025 (prices, 2010). I do not see consumer trends in oil consumption a problem for BP. This consumption pattern will be an advantage for BP. The bottom line is that BP’s industry and products looks like they will be in high demand for the foreseeable future. However even though Bp’s product is widely used they are not immune from poor public perception. Since the oil spill Bp has been forced to sell off some assets (White, 2011) to pay for loss revenue, and pending lawsuits from the oil spill.

BP’s problems continue outside of its finances. In early 2000 British petroleum launched a new campaign called “Beyond Petroleum”. This campaign was targeted top the environmental conscious consumer. Bp wanted to become established as an environmentally friends energy company. While it’s hard to see if that campaign was successful regardless, any positive perception or equity acquired from that campaign was lost do the oil spill. Reinventing themselves as an eco friendly company looks to be a difficult task at this time.

Moving forward With the environment a major issue in today’s world it may be a good idea for BP to invest in research for safer more eco friendly offshore drilling technology. Another way for BP to win over the public interest is to come up with a cleaner alternative source of energy. Would it be ironic that a oil company invents an alternative energy that is safer and cleaner for the environment. The emotional element of BP’s brand invokes bad feelings. With concerns about Global Warming and endangered species many feel BP broke its Brand Promise started by their campaign “Beyond Petroleum”.

For now British Petroleum’s strategy should be to allocate resources for research for the above mentioned. And also allocate resources to improving public perception. One example is their commercials with local business owners that were affected by the Gulf oil spill. They are telling the consumers that they are standing by their mistakes. I would also advise BP to communicate to the public what changes they are making from organizational structure to safety precautions.

BP may also look into working with eco friendly organizations and organizations like the World Wild Life foundation. Such organizations have voiced strong criticism BP after the oil spill. Working with these organizations would go far in telling the public they have turned over a new leaf. Marketing Recommendations for British Petroleum (prices, 2010) British Petroleum needs to have specific plan for each one of the possible scenarios they might encounter, the company took three months to stop the oil leak, and they are still working on the cleaning process.

This shows that BP was not prepared to face such a huge natural disaster; they did not have a contingency plan appropriated. Its is very important than the fist reaction that company takes to resolve the problem is the most suitable one, because that is when the media and public attention are more focus on the problem, and a prompt resolution will lead a faster recovery of the company image. BP should focus on mortification, taking full responsibility for the situation and its consequences.

This strategy address public critique in advance and give the company a more significant public relations ground. After admitting and apologizing for the catastrophe, BP must take an action to avoid that is going to happen again. Creating more and secure ways to drill oil, the company needs to improve procedures, safety and competence to regain the lost trust from the public. BP need to regain their good mane, at the moment the company is located in the awareness set in the customer mind that it does mean that its products will be consider if people has a negative image in it.

British Petroleum need to build positive feeling towards its corporation, one option is to develop green advertising, the company have invested million on it, but today they should put more emphasis on it. Create better image (social factor) by better approach to compensate those who have been affected. There were many people affected by the catastrophe, people from different communities, they need to focus on the different groups of people they are trying to reach in order transmit the message more efficiently; failing to do will worse the problem.

In order for people to place BP into their consideration set they need to believe that the company is reliable and responsible, in addition people must have good feeling towards the brand. They must invest a lot of money in advertising, informing people what is plan to recover and it is being developed. Those ad must run as many time as its needed, to inform people that “we are taking responsibility” to backfire those ad claiming the contrary “Show you care”, that is the primary position British Petroleum must assume.

The reality is that the Oil Spill in deep horizon water in Mexican Gulf, in April 2010 has made a huge human, ecological and financial lost, and it has ruined the company’s reputation. There is not way the company can go back in time and avoid what happened, but they can look forward and make the best out the situation. If BP can convince the public that they truly believe that its image will be reinstated, people will start bearing positive feeling towards BP. Bibliography 500, G. (2011). Bp Oil Spill

BP OIL SPILL Under the Deepwater Horizon, an offshore drilling ring of British Petroleum (BP) caused an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The incident occurred on April 20th 2010, where equipment failed and caused the explosion sinking the ring, and causing the death of 11 workers and more than 17 workers injured. The British based energy company also faced other problems at the site of the oil spill. More than 40 million gallons (estimated data) of oil spewed into the Gulf of Mexico.

Oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is a very serious threat for the wildlife as it causes water pollution. The oil spill effected many coastal areas in the US, like the Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida. The oil spill disaster strongly damaged wildlife cycle in the Gulf of Mexico, and many species were thrown into extinction. Similarly, thousands of businesses were thrown into extinction. Many people has questioned the ethical decisions and core value system that BP used to cut corners with the accident; namely, the race to maximize profits at all costs.

We are all aware that one of the main causes that let to the disaster were the result of bad decisions, in which a less expensive option (whether to run a test or use a particular kind casing pipe, for example) would save lives. There has been “zero dollars spent on research concerning how to handle oil spills for off-shore drilling by BP despite the company’s NET profits – above and beyond all salaries, bonuses, or overhead costs- of more than $59 BILLION” (“The Rachel Maddow Show” on MSNBC, aired at 7 p. m.

EST on June 28, Monday). The paperwork submitted to the U. S. Minerals Management Services (MMS) by BP in 2008 was 582 pages long, supposedly covering all of BP’s operations in the Gulf of Mexico. However, they omitted their ability to deal with oil spills in a worst-case scenario just to get their permits for drilling. Another very unethical act by BP was when President Obama was scheduled to visit Louisiana back than, BP hurriedly “hired” temporary workers and handed out gear (paper haz-mat uniforms, etc. , but told these temps not to talk to anyone. As soon as all the TV cameras and the president’s motorcade left the area, these “for show only” hires immediately stopped working (a local government official took photos and attempted to question a few, who advised him they were “not supposed to talk to anyone, on BP’s orders”). They did not come back on the following day or any day thereafter.

On the zero dollars spent for developing back-up systems, BP informed “The Rachel Maddow Show’s” representative that they “rely” on an organization which they claimed “does spill research” even though the investigators from the show discovered the organization named by BP does not receive any money from BP nor do they do research for ways to stop oil spills. In other words, BP was unethical and lied again. This British Petroleum is listed as the fourth wealthiest corporation in the entire world, and yet they lie about the extent of their spill.

They fudged figures and information (against the law) in order to get a license to drill in American waters, they did not even bother to change the batteries for the system they claimed was their “back-up”. BP, as most oil companies (and other business), are aimed at making as much money as possible. In this case because of the big cover up the media did, BP was forced to fix the problem, and it is a problem that its costing them major money, both through clean up and lost product. BP has so far committed $42 billion to cleaning up.

I really hope that BP (and other companies) learned the lesson, that cutting corners and cost reduction is not the only point that organizations should focus on. It is not safe to cut corners and presume that things will not happen. Make ethical decision, have back up plans, and ‘worst case scenario’ preparation. If BP would be more ethical and do the right things either by using the latest safety precautions when drilling (not cutting corners, and reducing costs), and moving faster and more dynamically when the disaster occurred, they could have avoided billions in cleanup and damages that they faced and are still facing now.

The BP oil spill has offered a moment for reflection for leaders around the world about their most basic beliefs. To many people, the BP oil spill has brought home the idea that future corporate leaders must develop personal ethical standards for making decisions that go beyond just a financial calculation. There are plenty of business practices that are legal, but fall short in being ethical. But I believe being ethical does pay off, slowly and steadily. You may lose some opportunities, but your reputation and self-perception is invaluable.

Reflection Paper on Gulf Oil Spill

Reflection Paper on Gulf Oil Spill This presentation had a deep impact on me because I had been living in Gulf Breeze, Florida at the time of the spill. Gulf Breeze is located 15 miles West of Pensacola and the reefs and beaches were severely impacted by it. Not only did the spill impact the environment but also the tourism which that city needed to thrive; in turn businesses closed and restaurants plundered. When I looked outside my bedroom window at the ocean, instead of seeing the bright blue colored ocean waves, I instead looked out at green murky foam covered waves and algae blooms.

The sand got covered in black oil and impacted the sea birds that used the splashing waves to gather small fish and organisms. So, when I listened to this presentation, I could relate to what the presenter was saying because I had witnessed firsthand how badly this affected the environment, but at the time I did not realize how it affected the reefs. What I found interesting about the presentation was the before and after pictures.

He had mentioned that the scientists used autonomous underwater vehicles that took high resolution map images of reefs that were 400-500 meters underwater (beforehand didn’t even realize some reefs were there). These images were used to help scientists take data on finding new coral sites and witness the affects the oil spill had on them. He mentioned at first they didn’t think the corals were being affected because pictures showed that the corals looked the same as they did last year.

At this time scientists were more concerned with marine animals and shorelines than the reefs. At second look even the corals looked fine, and scientists took lots of samples to see if the oil had reached the sites. A sediment trap was used to research the corals and the research showed that plankton filled the cups and that oil had made its way to the coral sites but that it had not affected them. What I learned was that, oil coming out of a well was 100*C, this was entering water that was 4*C at high pressure.

This oil formed a fine deep water plume of mist and most of this mist settled at 12 meter depths. When scientists took a third look at the coral reefs they realized that this black mist had affected them. When corals are stressed, they realize mucus, and this proved they were dying. Progression of damage was watched by the scientists by taking photos and videos over time. Months showed how parts of some of the corals got better while others lost tissue, had damage to their polyps, some fell off when touched and others were full of oil.

The presenter also mentioned that in order to see how much damage they went to many different coral sites to witness the damage. In conclusion, they found that the farther away from the oil spill they got the better the coral reefs were. He also concluded that hydroids were forming on the corals which will sting and kill the coral by pollination, and also that the brittle star that was shown in a picture had moved overtime, when they never move at all.

I really liked this presentation because it influenced me to want to help in whatever way I can to restore and help these important marine environments. Corals are 400+ years old, the damage to them is irreversible, and there is no way that we can replace them. People have to realize that this is a major problem and the protection of these precious sites needs to be enacted. I am not sure just how to do this, but just by making suggestions and learning as much as we can is a stepping stone to a bigger impact.
