Sensory Perceptions

They will also hear words, and sounds and will not understand or know what the sounds may be. But not until they are taught they will not know or understand how important these senses will be in life and how these senses will affect them and their learning experiences. Now as we grow into adults our senses will have become interwoven with the way we think and use our minds. When we read a book or even read a recipe to cook we are using eyes as tool. When we listen to music, hear the bird’s chirp, our children laughing we are using another sense which Is our ears to sites to these wonderful sounds that we enjoy.

Our ears also hear sounds that we do not want to hear as well. We have to think when we are using our hands to fix a car, play a guitar. We are even thinking and using some of our senses when we have decided to jump out of an airplane for no good reason at all. But no matter what we may be doing we use our senses for some reason or another. Now it is true that “there Is nothing in our mind unless it is first senses”. (Aquinas, 2007, peg. 53) Why Is this? In order for our senses to work properly our brain Is Involved with our senses ether the Information for our senses to work. Hen we read we are using our eyes to gather the information and it is being put into our minds for reference. We all count on all of our senses to be accurate, and there certain factors that do influence the accuracy of this information that is received by a person’s senses and how it affects their perception of the world. On the other hand there are weaknesses to the amount of knowledge our senses can give. The best way to look at all this our brain Is almost Like a computer, It will only be effective If our brain Is able to process the information correctly and there are no conflicts.

Accuracy is defined as the degree of agreement between the sensory information and the environment and the feedback required to determine the accuracy of the senses. What has been done and used as a sensory exercise is that several people are asked to do a blind fold test, they are then given objects and have to determine what they are by only touching and smelling. Each one Is from a different able to distinguish what the object is by feel. But you have a manager who is given the same object; he or she may not be able to distinguish what the object is.

Why is this? It is because they do not work with bricks, this is not their trade. They have to think and guess and what the object maybe, if they have never worked with bricks they will not be able to distinguish the object, but on the other hand they will if they have had a background then they will be able to identify the object. Now our senses do have what you call check and balances in place. For example what you may be feeling when you touch the object it may be negated or influence if you smell the object.

The sense of sight is very important, because we depend on this to confirm what e see is real or not real, to distinguished between colors, such as white vs.. Black. Take a person who has been blind all his or her life. They first have learned to use their other senses and they are more keen then others who can see. A blind person knows his or her limitation and is equipped to act more wisely in certain situations. But then you take the person who use to see, but became blind because of an accident, or disease, they keep pretending that they can see and can do things they use to, but because of the blindness they are not able to.

But without being able to e we could get run over by a car, trip over hazard objects that could cause us to get hurt. Hearing is another sense that is very important for human survival such as hearing Look out! A rock is about to fall on your head! ” to hearing music that we like, to hearing an emergency vehicle coming your way and you need to pull over, to hear the words I love you from your child, But as one knows a person hearing deteriorates through age, so one has to have the aid of a hearing aid to help with the hearing.

Then you have the people who have gone deaf or were born deaf and they have to alkali with their hands by learning and using sign language to speak. Touch is very important because one must be able to feel pain, feel if they are being burn, to protect one from dangers. But touch is important to feel a hug, someone holding your hand, touch on your face, this is how once learns. This is also how a blind person describes a person as well. People use the sense of touch such has having diabetes. Identify and describe at least three (3) factors contributing to the accuracy of sensory data.

Source of data and cognitive ability: “To obtain accurate sensory ATA, the source of data must be received through the senses of sight, hearing, smell and touch acutely sensitive to act like lenses, amplifiers, particle detectors and pressure and gauges to feed the brain to produce accurate sensory perception of the data obtained. ” Reliability of facts observed: “The reception of solid sensory data through the accurate observations would provide facts and data that is vital for sensing -thinking connection or accurate sensory perception. The brain and interpretation of data received: “Cognitive Ability to analyze sensory data is based on lethal brain. The power of the senses is manifested when information is received in the brain. Inaccurate data sent to the brain will be interpreted falsely. On the other hand, an unhealthy brain will affect the accuracy of messages sent by the senses. Hence, accuracy of sensory data is based on data received and perceived through the senses and the cognitive interpretation of the information. (Papers/ Sensory-perceptions) Our senses have a lot due with our brain and our learning. That his or her senses are not perfect than they can try to take steps to improve on he accuracy and look at the changes that need to be made to adapt to the situation. Discuss the roles of “nature” and “nurture” with regard to the interpretation and evaluation of sensory data. Nature and Nurture can be traced back to the 13th century known as a catch- phrase for the roles of heredity and environment in human development.

For many centuries some scientist from then and even still today believes that when a person behaves or acts a certain way it is genetic which is known as “the nature theory of human behavior. But on the other hand you have some scientists who believe that cause the way one behaves or thinks that this is a taught and obtained overtime which is known as “This is known as the “nurture” theory of human behavior. Scientist are right, but scientist should be asking what information is one born with and if they have this information, is it through nurture or nature.

Where the proof lies is where a child already has a lot of knowledge at a very early age before he or she starts school such as playing the piano and reading, and this many lend some credence to the idea that we are actually born with some information already, it Just as to be brought out and used, and it depends how the child learns. In conclusion no matter how one make look at sensory perception they have to know it can be very deceiving as well.

Fra Lippo Lippi: Argument About Art

Then, you’ll take Your hand away that’s fiddling on my throat… ” (12-13). Why then Is the monologue delivered? It might be regarded as a sort of apologia , as his captors are not a little surprised by discovering their prisoners membership of a monastic order: “Though your eye twinkles still, you shake your head – Mine’s shaved -? a monk. You say -? the sting’s in that! If Master Cosmic announced himself, Mum’s the word naturally; but a monk! ” (76-79). However, beginning as such, Far Lollipop Lippies speech turns Into an emotional outpouring of his ideas regarding art and Its nature.

He seems to find It easier to share his independent opinions with the guards, who are socially closer to him than either his Prior or his influential patron. It is a monologue of an artist hindered in his work by his customers, as he has to adapt his paintings to their tastes, however distasteful he finds it. By and by he expresses his views on the nature of art, it connection with religion and Its mission. His views defer significantly from the Church’s doctrine that the truthful depiction of human body Is unnecessary and harmful, as art is to elevate human soul. Ding it to forget the earthly. For Prior the artist’s truthful depiction of human body is “devil’s game” (172). His main objection is that Lollipop’s paintings “do to so instigate to prayer” (316), which should be the chief objective of art. The art should deal with the spiritual world, using material things as far as they reflect the spiritual categories: his demand to the artist can be reduced to “Give us no more of body than shows the soul” (188). Lollipop successfully builds his own philosophy of art, refuting the Prior’s arguments.

While the Prior Is hypocritical In his despise of body, Lollipop’s art Is sincere In Its praise of God’s creation. He supposes that there is nothing sinful in representing things as they are, eliciting in his viewers a thrill of recognition in something that is to be called realism centuries later. “The shapes of things, their colors, lights and shades, Changes, surprises, -? and God made it all! ” (284-285) Thus it is no pointless imitation of nature, it helps viewers to see nature as created by God anew. Furthermore, it revives the soul and calls It towards God, helping to see HIS work In everyday things.

The artist works ad ma]room del Gloria and tries to use his talent to help people in their search of God. Far Lollipop Lippies conception of art differs widely from that which is expressed by the Church in the person of the Prior. He insists that his art does serve God – better than it would if he conformed to the Prior’s demands. Firstly, he feels that art, as the Prior sees it, is hypocritical. As it is, You tell too many lies and hurt yourself: You don’t Like what you only Like too much, You ah Like want, IT glen you at your word, You find abundantly detestable. 261-264) But is does not he lead a hypocritical life either? Remember, he is a monk – and he is caught “at an alley’s end Where sportive ladies leave their doors ajar? ” (5-6) Even rough watchmen look disapproving and shocked. Lollipop Justifies himself. He points UT that he was an eight-year-old child when he was forced to take monastic vows by extreme hunger. He had to renounce either the world with its temptations or a piece of bread, and certainly he chose the former. I’m grown a man no doubt, I’ve broken bounds: You should not take a fellow eight years old And make him swear to never kiss the girls. 223-225) Secondly, Lollipop insists that his art does serve the Church. His opponents would like his paintings to set the objectives rather than reflect the current state of things, but the artist answers: … Don’t you mark? We’re made so that we love hen we see them painted, things we have passed Perhaps a hundred times nor cared to see; And so they are better, painted -? better to us, Which is the same thing. Art was given for that; God uses us to help each other so, Lending our minds out. (300-306) First He points out that his works are not a mere meaningless imitation of life.

They help people to understand, evaluate and appreciate things around them anew, to see them with other eyes, or Just to see what they have been blind to. As he sees it, such use of art comes directly from God, and he obeys Him and serves Him with his gift as well as he is able to. Next, he presents an apologia of the body. It cannot be detached from soul, as it is also a part of a human being. The world as a whole unites both the spiritual and the material, the heavenly and the earthly – it was so created by God.

For me, I think I speak as I was taught; I always see the garden and God there A-making man’s wife: and, my lesson learned, The value and significance of flesh, I can’t unlearn ten minutes afterwards (265-269) The flesh is an integral part of a human being, it cannot and must not be ignored as God’s creation. Thus Lollipop and the Prior’s argument extends beyond the subject of art into a potentially dangerous area, broaching the subject of mandatory celibacy for clergymen. Lollipop doubts its Justice and expresses ideas which are to appear a few centuries later.

He supposes that God’s gifts should inspire Joy and gratitude rather than be rejected – and he expresses this in his paintings: Do you feel thankful, ay or For this fair town’s face, yonder river’s line, The mountain round it and the sky above, Much more the figures of man, woman, child, These are the frame to? What’s it all about? Dwelt upon, To be passed over, despised? Or Wondered at? Oh, this last of course! -? you say. (286-292) He highlights the great alee AT a person, an Uninominal, as a material Ana spiritual wangle. Nature Is only a frame for a human being.

Human body is made by God, and as such it is worth admiring and painting in all its perfection. It is Prior’s disdainful and pejorative attitude towards it that is sinful, as it is disdain towards God’s own creation. Once again, Browning puts into Lipids mind the ideas of the following generations. Lastly, according to the artist, beauty itself does not wake only worldly feelings – it inspires people and awakens the soul: If you get simple beauty and naught else, You get about the best thing God invents: That’s somewhat: and you’ll find the soul you have missed, Within yourself, when you return him thanks. 217-220) Thus it serves both God and people. Thus it provides the victory of the spiritual over the material – the Church teaches us to aspire to. This conception is akin to Dostoevsky “Beauty will save the world”. Beauty is endowed by the artist with a power to revive the human soul – and what higher mission could art have? Here is its ultimate aim. It appears symbolic that Lollipop is caught at the alleys end. His own life look a blind alley: both in his life and in his art he is cannot follow his liberal ideas. In life, he is forced to do it secretly.

In art, being extremely sensitive to criticism, he frequently has to conform, to adapt, to paint what is expected of him: So, I swallow my rage, Clench my teeth, suck my lips in tight, and paint To please them -? sometimes do and sometimes don’t… (242-244) But his masterpieces live and, having inspired Robert Browning to write the poem, continue to be wondered at and admired, which speaks for itself. The Norton Anthology of English Literature, Volume E: The Victorian Age. 8th De. W. W. Norton & Company, 2005. Print.

Spring and All

In William Carols Williams’ poem “Spring and All,” he uses vivid images and metaphors to compare nature to those who endure a deadly disease while quarantined in a contagious hospital. The piece of land surrounding the hospital has been tainted by the dead of winter, which is used to represent those who lost their lives due to the sickness. Then the speaker describes the appreciated transformation the land begins to show, as winter slowly turns into spring. The dead piece of land beginning to show signs of life is used to represent the few that survive and will get o leave the dreary hospital.

The speaker describes the piece of land surrounding the hospital as muddy, lifeless, and cold. The description of the land during winter is used to symbolize the gloomy feel of the hospital and those who will never leave it, consumed by their illness. Like winter, those who have died are like “twiggy/ stuff of bushes and small trees/ with dead, brown leaves under them/ leafless vines-,” (10-13. ) The lifelessness of the land and the bare dead plants is used as a metaphor for the tragic deaths of the quarantined patients.

The speaker describes the sky and weather as “mottled clouds driven from/ the northeast – a cold wind,” (3-4. ) The cold wind is used to symbolize the cold chill of death and the misery that will blow through families who lost their loved ones. The poem then begins to portray the beginning of spring and the diseased filled land commences on a slow transformation with a chance of vitality. The land Is “lifeless in appearance, sluggish/ dazed spring approaches,” (14-15. ) These lines are meant to symbolize the lives of those who struggled and survived through the Illness.

At first they are stricken Ill and appear dead In their beds, but as spring approaches they awaken weak, but alive and full of hope. Spring approaches and “now the stark dignity of/ entrance – Still, the profound change/ has come upon them: rooted, they/ grip down and begin to awaken,” (25-28. ) Not only does the last stanza represent nature breaking through all the dead and being reborn but also those who survived a contagious disease and will receive another chance at life.

Spring has always been a symbol of rebirth because dead, leafless, and flowerless plants begin new growth; animals awaken from their long winter slumber, and also a popular time for new life to enter the world. It makes sense that this poem compares spring with the lives of those who have overcome a serious Illness, and will get another shot at life, almost as If they have been reborn. In this poem, winter Is used as a symbol for those who lost their lives, and the sorrows that will freeze the hearts of their family and friends.

On the other hand, spring Is used to Illustrate the rebirth of nature and the second chance to those who led on and fought to stay alive. As the land outside the contagious hospital begins to transform with new life and beautiful colors It represents the hope of those that survive and could look out one of the hospitals window and witness new life beginning to grow as they experience their own new chance at life. State of Race Relations in Our Country Today

Choose any of the activities on the website. What did you learn by completing the activity? Based on the information provided, why do we still live in a largely segregated country? What do you think about the state of race relations in our country today? I learned that appearance doesn’t always tell you about someone’s ancestry or self- Identity. Most people base a person’s race off of the way they look and In most cases they are wrong because they don’t know exactly what race they are by Just looking at them.

In the human diversity quiz I was shocked to find out that fruit flies have the most genetic variation. In the split Identity part they mentioned that black women have the highest chance of being strip-searched out of all US citizens. That amazed me because I would think black women would get treated the same as a white women while getting searched In public. I feel Like people still live In a largely segregated country because people allow It to soul be segregated. Most people still group others by race, class, and choices they make in life.

I don’t think it’s segregated cause it’s supposed to be its just that way because people make it that way by following one another and doing as others do by separating others from themselves based on characteristics. I hate when I fill out applications for certain things and seeing the check box for race. I think that things should be based off a persons as a whole not the color or race that they are. I think that right there leads people to think that others still need to be segregated and put into groups based on color and race. People at the end of the day are Just people and that’s how it should be looked at.

Since Hanna Moved Away Analysis

This expressed how saddened the persona was when her friend Hanna moved house as even the most expensive and comfortable kind of material and cloth, velvet feels Like prickly and unbearable, Like hay. The poet keeps repeating the same words ‘since Hanna moved away, which Is to emphasize and reinforce what happened after the friend moved house and let the reader keep In mind that Hanna had already moved away. The poem makes me feel empathetic towards the persona, feeling saddened and rather depressed for the persona as her friend Just moved away and she might not e able to play with her or even see her at all.

The poet stated that ‘Nothings fun to laugh about, / Nothings fun to play. ‘ Which means the persona do not seem to be Interested In anything or have cheered up or be happy at all ever since her friend had moved house. This Is relevant to a few aspects of our lives as the persona, must have had some difficulty adjusting to change when her friend moved away and was Interested In practically nothing, Just Like how we needed to adjust to the big change school’s subjects and timings.

Rikki Tikki Tavi Theme

Theme is a big idea we take away from a story after reading it. In the short story, “Risk Tick Davit” by Rudyard Kipling, the primary theme of the story is the Idea of good versus evil. Above all, Risk’s character represents good, and the cobras In the story represent evil. In Dalton, another possible theme for this short story could be courage versus fear. By and large, the story contains action and dialogue that helps us determine what the author wanted to reveal about mankind. Body Paragraph 1

Risk = Good Explain each characteristic of Risk’s through summarizing and quotations. Protective courageous loyal Kipling develops the character of Risk to represent the good in our world. Though Risk is somewhat of an underdog, he demonstrates protectiveness, courage, and loyalty. Risk’s protectiveness Is evident at the beginning of the story when he went to bed with Teddy, the young boy. He was awake on the pillow as Teddy was sleeping. Teddy’s mother didn’t like it, because she thought Risk might bite Teddy.

But Teddy’s ether explains, “He Is safer with that little beast than If he had a bloodhound to watch him. ” Rural was motivated to protect the family because he wanted to live with them. Courage was a trait Risk showed several times throughout the story, but when Nag came into the house through the sluice, he became very frightened when seeing the size of the big cobra. At that point, Risk began to reason and ask himself questions about what he should do. Then he says to himself, “It must be the head, the head above the hood; and, when I am once there, I must not let go.

Though he was afraid, he showed courage and never gave up even during the toughest battles. When Rural Interacted with Dare, he discovered that the tailboards were miserable because one of their babies fell out of the nest and Nag ate him. Risk demonstrated loyalty to his friends by standing up to Nag, the big black cobra, and asking him, ” Do you think It Is right for you to eat fledglings out of a nest? ” This loyalty helped him gain hero status with Dare and his wife. Body Paragraph 2 Anglia = Evil selfish 1 OFF determined Body Paragraph 3

Alternate claim Courage vs.. Fear Risk = courage Schnauzer = : Kipling used the theme of good versus evil to help us think about what this means for mankind. When we demonstrate protectiveness, loyalty, and bravery we make life better for others not Just ourselves. If we are selfish and threatening, and our only goal is survival, then we aren’t contributing and making the world a better place. In conclusion, we learn that our focus in life should be to think about others before we think of ourselves in order to make a difference in the world.
