PPUA 6201 UNH Racial Equity Solutions Historical Racism Shaped Our Cities Discussion
Help me study for my Political Science class. I’m stuck and don’t understand.
Project: Racial Equity Solutions
This course focuses on the historical racism that has shaped our cities. As planning and policy students, your research will thus focus on finding solutions or remedies. I will assign students to a group to explore solutions for housing desegregation and building racial equity in cities in other realms. Historically, planners have debated the advantage of place-based v. people-based solutions. This is a dynamic your group will explore. For example, is a solution to racial segregation in housing to provide more access to the suburbs to blacks and other ethnic groups who have been excluded? Or is to build state-of-the art green housing in existing neighborhoods? Or some combination? Our class will decide early on whether all groups should examine these questions in the context of Boston, or whether to add more cities. I will begin a library of resources and the groups will add to it. On October 14th and 28th, activists working toward equitable solutions in housing and transportation will speak to the class. As indicated on the detailed class schedule below, the groups will meet during class time on several sessions. I will pop into the group meetings to discuss your ideas.
Each group will produce a Solutions Report and present it to the class on November 18th. The report should be no more than 6,000 words, excluding the bibliography. You may use any template you want to produce a professional-looking report with a complete bibliography and a professional presentation. Use endnotes to reference sources (e.g. 1. Smith, 2020; 2. Personal interview with Important Activist) and the bibliography for full citations. I will post a video with more complete instructions and will entertain all questions in class on the details of the assignment. Please post your reports to the Canvas site by midnight November 14th to allow all students enough time to read all the reports.
