This is an intentional choice to assure that the students can identify themselves with him and thus hopefully listen intensely. Obama presents himself as honest and reliable: “I did some things I’m not proud of, and got in more trouble than I should have”. To acknowledge one’s errors is considered sympathetic and the purpose with this quote is to edify or improve Obama’s image and hereby strengthen his ethos. Obama acknowledges that he has made errors, but inspiringly emphasises that with hard work you can still achieve goals in life, that even with errors you can become the President of the United States.

After Obama has created a certain image of himself, he has the ability to demand something of his audience. Thus he repeats the word ‘responsibility’ up to eight times in a short amount of time. He also uses several anaphors as a rhetorical device with the purpose to clarify his message, “I’ve talked about your teacher’s responsibility (…) I’ve talked about your parents’ responsibility (…) I’ve talked a lot about your government’s responsibility (…)”3 He clearly wants to imprint the importance of an education and that every student has responsibility for their own learning. Later in his speech he points out that even if the overall framework is good none of it will matter unless the student ‘s responsibilities are fulfilled.

Education is not only important to the student, but also wields significant influence on the state, “We need every single one of you to develop your talents, skills and intellect (…) If you don’t do that – if you quit on school – you’re not just quitting on yourself, you’re quitting on your country.”4 The quote has a doublet effect. On the one hand Obama appeals to patriotic feelings and pathos, which puts in one’s minds the former President John F. Kennedy’s well-known statement: “Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country.” On the other hand he hopes that the audience will feel discomfort if they don’t get an education and help their country to develop positively.

His speech is filled with different anecdotes from real-life to motivate his audience, which furthermore appeals to pathos. First he speaks of his own experiences, which is followed by an anecdote about First Lady Michelle Obama and her upbringing. Then Obama tells three different anecdotes about the three students Jazmin Perez, Andoni Schultz and Shantell Steve. In all cases they refused to give up because of their individual challenges but overcame their hurdles by hard work. It is possible to create the future you like by pursuing your dreams which is a hidden reference to the cultural heritage “the American dream”, which also appeals to pathos.

At the end of his speech he appeals to logos by bringing the students to reason. He mentions that it is important to keep up the hard work because, “Maybe you could be a good writer (…) but you might not know it until you write a paper for your English class. Maybe you could be an innovator (…) but you might not know it until you do a project for your science class.”5

Obama clearly uses the Greek trinity pathos, ethos and logos, the three forms of appeal to address his audience. It is very important for Obama that his speech inspires and motivates students not to give up and to energetically study to finish their education no matter which situation they’re in. He also wants to make it clear that only hard work will lead to success. In addiction to that it shows that Obama expects a lot of his country and its youth and that he assigns a high priority to values such as diligence and hard work.

He encourages students to study hard and take responsibility for their education, urge students to set goals, believe in themselves and to be the authors of their own destinies. In addiction to that, children are only able to break their social heritage through education, which demands a great deal of the students but in the end gives quite a few opportunities.

Obama makes a clear display of the fact that students are not only responsible for themselves but also have a responsibility to the country, and thus Obama tries to unite the students as one symbiont organism rooted in the country of their origin. Because of the economic crisis and America’s low rate of growth, it is important to stabilize the economy. Education is an economic issue if not the economic issue. Our borders are overflowing with illegal immigrants who have no intensions of legalizing or paying taxes but are willing to take our jobs and take our money back to their country where it does not belong. Our president has been persecuting Arizona for enforcing illegal immigration laws when his administration will not do the job. At the White House, the president held a joint press conference with Mexico’s president that featured both of them criticizing Arizona’s immigration law. I only wish there were someone there to represent America that day.

That is a matter of national security where we cannot trust our president to protect us. We depend on our president to provide us with jobs when the job market is suffering and this president is providing us with a slow increase in jobs when we need a quick and large increase, again our president expresses untrustworthiness in the face of a crisis. The very first thing our president did after he was elected was push through the largest and most wasteful spending bill in human history. The cost of the bill was attested to be 800 billion to 1. trillion dollars. The purpose of the bill was to create jobs and the government claimed the bill would keep unemployment below 8%. We’ve now had 38 straight months of above 8% unemployment, the longest streak since the Great Depression. Keeping our country and government operating smoothly is another area where uncertainty surrounds our president’s capabilities. That is an example of our tax money being insecure in the hands of our president. We pay more money a year than anyone can fathom and it is squandered in this country and around the world n ways that do not help solve our problems we face here at home or around the world. As all presidents are, this president has been unreliable from the beginning, when he ran for office. Every president to be must tweak the truth of where they stand on certain topics of interest, creating a false sense of security which later makes us insecure as a country. Despite the fact that our government assured us that there was “no risk” America would lose its AAA credit rating, America did indeed lose its rating for the first time since 1917 because of our president’s refusal to cut spending.

The recent speeches on foreign policy and national security provide extensional evidence of how trustless our president is to us. Putting a man on the moon is one of America’s greatest accomplishments and our Space Shuttle program was ended, under our current president. When a U. S. president wants to be reelected to office, he must rethink his first set of unfulfilled promises and decide which to change and which to keep. Foreign leaders of allied nations around the world cannot trust our president when they need his help. American’s think of our president as being untrustworthy when it comes to the current crisis in the middle-east. The President has wasted a ton of time, energy and money on things like nationalizing our health care system which doesn’t really rise to the level of being a true national emergency. Meantime, he has spent almost no time dealing with real national emergencies, such as the emergence of a nuclear Iran. They feel as though he is not acting in the best interest of our country.

Look at our president, when faced with multiple countries in the middle-east burning our flag, he does not take action in the best interest of the citizens of the United States. As the president of the United States of America it is his duty to act in best interest of this country’s citizens and there is no evidence where he has asked us what we would want him to do about this crisis. Sociological Analysis of the Presidential Election of 2012 from a Structural Functionalist Perspective and a Conflict Perspective. As the presidential election draws closer, we could vividly view our society from social conflict and structural functionalist perspectives. The democratic process helps us to ask why do we accept and embrace democracy, how does it influence our social patterns and functions; and how does democracy really work for the stability of our society.

In this essay, I will analyze the presidential election of 2012 using sociological perspective with emphasis on manifest and latent functions, class, race and gender conflicts. It is a known fact that democracy and demography are like Siamese twins that cannot be separated. These demographics include gender, race, age, disability, wealth, employment status, and locations. Politicians have used, and still using, these elements to know which group is the best to appease. On gender issue, the two prominent political parties, Democratic and the Republican Parties, know that “females voters make up 52% of the US electorate” (Bloomberg News).

These women tend to vote for any political party that caters to their needs. Also, race is part of political consideration. The African-Americans, Asian-Americans, the Hipics and White are different voting blocs which the politicians must woo. According to the online Hipic News, “the recent release of National Census data confirms that “50 million Latinos are part of the American electorate”. Not only the Hipics are increasing in population, the African American grew by 1. 6% in 2010 while the Asian-American are recently declared, by CNN, as the “fastest growing minority in the US”.

Another demographic to be considered is age. Steven Thomma and William Douglas of McClatchy Newspaper said, “Statistics show that older white and rich voters are more reliable electorates than the young voters; they tend to vote Republican Party”. The question now is how all these fit into our sociological perspective. I will start by looking at the manifest function of our democracy. In truth, democracy has helped to stabilize and also create unity among citizens. It has become a recognized and accepted process which everyone look forward to periodically.

It is intended to involve all qualified adults in picking their next leaders. The sense is that once everyone is involved, then the majority will be pleased with the government. However, as much as there has been good governance through democracy, there have also been some unintended consequences too. These consequences can be seen by examining the latent function of our democracy. Today, one can hardly watch TV or listen to the radio without seeing or hearing the fracture that exists in the political system of our country.

Citizens have been divided into two or more groups based on their party affiliations. The divide is so obvious that parties are not willing to compromise on any issue. The result is a stagnant government, and no reasonable policies have been passed into law. It is hard to know if this fraction is recognized but we surely know that it is unintended. Aside from stability and loyalty which democracy brought into our society, we have seen inequality that generates conflicts. These conflicts can be seen in class, race and gender.

On Class, according to Real Cleat Politics, the Pew Research Center found in 2008 that six out of ten Americans say that the Republican Party “favors the rich”. Real Clear Politics went further to state how the Republican policies give tax break to the rich and the Democrats want tax breaks for the middle class and the poor. This situation has created a permanent wide gap between the rich and the poor. Another conflict is race; it is not surprising that the political parties are trying to woo the ethnic group with the highest population.

The Democrats are trying to lure the Hipic with immigration reform while the Republicans are trying to solidify their White base with a promise of deportation of illegal immigrants. Both sides are aggressively marketing their ideas to each race for votes. According to US Catholics News, “these problems have led to family division, causing a heavy toll on children and families of Hipic community’. The Hipics are not the only group suffering from this political division, The African- American, the Asian-American, the Indian-Americans and all other minorities are all struggling to fit into the social structure.

For all of these, one can easily see both the minorities and the majority voting along their party line. The minority ethnic groups tend to vote for Democrats while the majority ethnic group votes Republican. Another well observed social conflict can be seen in gender. The gender issue has brought out many social issues. From woman’s health, contraceptives and abortion, parenthood and womanhood, the list goes on and women are taking their stands on issues that concern them. The women are the largest electorate in US.

LA Progress, an online News Journal, after series of research, simply concludes that “Women will decide 2012 Presidential Election”. For this reason, politicians are coming up with policies that will benefit women. However, not all these policies are favorable to all women. For example, the pro-life advocates want abortion abolished, the pro-choice advocates wants abortion to be part of preventive healthcare programs. The debate has generated so much heat that some abortion clinics were burned down and some abortion doctors were murdered.

With all these issues in mind, pro-choice women mostly vote for Democrats while pro-life women mostly vote for Republicans. Men have been the agitators for gun rights. Policies are fashioned to give them freedom to own guns without any restrictions; these policies have led to the availability of street guns. The lovers of guns mostly vote republican while the pro-gun control group mostly votes for republicans. It is important to mention here that National Rifle Association, the best known body that represents gun rights advocates, has both male and female members.

Above all, this election is very unique because from the look of things, the minorities especially the Hipic and women are increasing in population and they will determine the election outcome. The Hipic and women mostly vote for Democrats while Asian-American, the fastest growing minority, mostly votes for Republicans because of their conservative values. The speech was broadcasted nationally and students were tuning in all across America, kindergarten through 12th grade. His speech makes it very clear that you simply cannot quit school and skip classes because “you’re not just quitting on yourself, you’re quitting on your country”.

President Obama would like to motivate all the students who were listening and that feeling of importance, which the sentence above is showing, might be the exact motivator for that to happen. Since the audience is a group of students – large amount in a small age – he tries to make himself likeable. This is seen in the anecdote about his own childhood and hard upbringing. Throughout the speech, President Obama takes great use of pathos as a persuasion mean which means that he appeals to both emotions and feelings: “And even when you’re struggling, even when you’re discouraged, and you feel like other people have given up on you – don’t ever give up yourself. , President Obama is using pathos as the main way of persuasion since people are more likely to agree when they’re emotional. There are, however, several places where he appeals to ethos by expressing his own equality to the rest of the audience: “[…] how’s everybody doing today? ”, as he opens the speech in this way, he sets the scene and tries to get rid of his authority as the most powerful man in the world since no one likes to be talked down to. President Obama mentions all the different grades of the same reason; he doesn’t want to talk down to them.

President Obamas main point is that all students have to work hard in order to reach success and get a good education. Education is the only “real” way out of poverty, unemployment and trouble. His argument for this statement is that without an education and hard work, you can’t be something in life; jobs and money doesn’t come from nothing, even though several Hollywood-movies and TV-series might express that. Furthermore, he stresses the importance of responsibility.

Not only for your own actions, but also for the responsibility your teachers should to inspire you, your family to support you and make sure you stay on track, and the government’s responsibility for setting high standards and provide whatever it takes to raise the bar for educational standards. However, all of this doesn’t mean much if you don’t take the responsibility of yourself and your education. He describes how every single one of us has something to contribute: “Every single one of you has something to offer”.

Hereafter he even gives several examples of opportunities which might occur for someone who has found her/his hidden talent. This also referrers to the “don’t quit, don’t skip, stay in school” message he’s trying to embrace. The next part of the speech is once again used to make President Obama identifiable. Barack Obama uses a lot of different rhetorical techniques in order to create an environment in which his young audience feels comfortable in; furthermore, it makes his argumentation a lot more convincing.

In lines 164-165 he keeps repeating “I expect […]”, which sets the bars for the upcoming year. I believe he does this because he has an authority. As much as he tries to hide it, he also uses it. If it was a general John Doe who said “I expect this and that from you”, what purpose would it have? The audience wouldn’t listen! You could say that Barack Obama is a role model for a lot of people – if not a whole nation: he’s the first black president and worked his way up from nothing. President Obama is rying to make the distance between him – and his authority – and the audience as small as possible by making a lot of comparisons and relations. The words “I get it” and “I know” is not put there for no reason. By decreasing the gap between him and the audience, his authority is more in the background, and he is now a person whom you can relate to, and not the most powerful man on the world. In America, national sentiment isn’t very uncommon, and the responsibility which a lot of people feel toward their country is a mean to motivate people.

Therefore, the argument: “you’re not just quitting on yourself, you’re quitting on your country” is one powerful motivator. I feel that the speech is indeed influenced by American thinking, however, it all makes sense; even in my head. He stresses the importance of education, and that is something each and every country has a necessity to do; perhaps he has found the way to actually communicate the message?
