PSYC 415 University of Maryland Eastern Shore Cognitive Psychology Discussion Questions
Need help with my Psychology question – I’m studying for my class.
Instructions:
About a paragraph or more in length
No APA format required
Questions:
1. Pretend that you are talking to your 60-year old relative about
what you learned in cognitive psychology over the past week. You should
assume this relative knows nothing about cognitive psychology, or even
psychology, in general. Choose one concept from chapter 4, name the
concept you chose, write the conversation that you are having with your
60-year old relative that thoroughly explains the concept to this
relative. You should be able to explain it in your own words (remember
that the relative knows nothing about cognitive psychology) and give
examples of it. As you read through each other’s explanations and
examples, can you provide additional ways in which your classmates might
define the concept? Or additional examples?
Be sure to give detailed answers as you need to pretend the person
to whom you’re “speaking” knows nothing about attention or perception.
2. Pretend
that you have been hired as a tutor for incoming freshmen, and the
student with whom you’re assigned to work is really struggling on
his/her PSYC 101 exams. Put together some advice that you can give the
student to help him/her improve his/her memory. You must use specific
advice, theories, and techniques discussed in this chapter.
Be sure
to fully defend your study plan with details and explanations so that
the PSYC 101 student knows why those specific study techniques are being
suggested.
3. The Seven Sins of Memory…how many times do we fall victim to one of those pesky sins? Tell us the funniest example of when you fell victim to each of the sins. In other words, for each sin, give your funniest, personal, real-life example.
4. Consider Kosslyn’s argument in favor
of spatial representation and Pylyshyn’s argument in favor of
propositional representation. If you need more information to
understand the difference, take a look at this tutorial.
Now that you can recognize what each theory suggests and the
differences between the theories, choose whether you think that we use
spatial representation or propositional representations when we form
mental images. Defend your position by giving real-life examples (not
the ones provided in the text) that support that position.
