PEER REVIEW LESSON ONE; Prompt One
“Medicare is a federal health insurance program for individuals that are sixty-five years of age or older or younger individuals with some type of disability. The original vision of Medicare was solely based on the liberal views of solidarity which is now causing conflict with the conservative views of individualism and competition. Medicare was enacted in 1965 under President Lyndon B. Johnson. Medicare was enacted as a counter reform to the Progressive Era. Medicare was brought about to provide health care coverage for older Americans. Medicare’s enactment brought about lasting political dilemmas over its policies. Some key features of Medicare as it was enacted that created later political difficulties included Medicare providing a limited benefits package to protect the elderly, Medicare being divided into two programs with one covering hospital stays and the other physician costs, Medicare borrowing trust fund and payroll tax financial arrangements, Medicare being a liberal program, and Medicare was being envisioned as a beginning. The first key feature that provided health care coverage for the elderly left out dental care, nursing home care, hearing aids and prescription drugs. Key feature two was designed out of the idea of preventing an increase in payroll taxes. The third key feature questioned Medicare’s fiscal and political stability due to rising health care costs in the United States. The fourth key feature brought debate between the old liberal views and the current conservative views of American politicians. Key feature five did not expand its coverage which led to the unfulfilled dream of “Medicare for all’. With the key features mentioned, certain areas were not included which therefore led to many of the current debates on health care. Health care reform is still a topic that the presidents are faced with discussing. The Biden administration is also being faced with dealing with health care reform..”
