How Role Models Affect Teenagers

Young adults that often pay attention to trends utilize social media to find what is advertised in the newest products, fashions, and services. A better understanding of how role models influence teenagers can aid organizations and their advertising teams to target and communicate more to this budding market. Relation to celebrities. Sports and sports celebrities are major keys to today’s media culture. Sports celebrities have been role models for years, and with the advancement of technology, it seems that famous and infamous athletes are all over the place. In the past years, advertisers have given famous athletes monetary rewards for endorsing their products. Sports celebrities’ endorsements have ranged from using brands to discussing personal experience with the brand. Some examples are Michael Jordan being endorsed by Nike and Gatorade and Shaquille O’Neal being endorsed by Burger King and Radio Shack.

Generation Y, individuals born between the years 1977 and 1994, are one of the most important target markets for advertisers because they exhibit astounding potential while also facing considerable challenges. Pokrywczynksi and Wolburg pointed out that the youth market is one of the greatest of the groups due to their ability to begin trends, their power of spending, their potential for becoming lifelong customers, and their interest of new products. It is argued that the youth are an easier target market due to them growing up in a consumer-oriented society.

Consumer socialization is defined as how young people gain skills, knowledge, and attitudes that are relative to their role as consumers. It also emphasizes the sources of influence, referred to as “socialization agents”, that convey attitudes, norms, behaviors, and motivations to the learner. Socialization agents can be people or organizations that are related to an individual directly. Some of these socialization agents that are often used in literature are peers, parents, mass media, television viewing, and school.

Role models are anyone that have potential to influence the decision of a consumer. A very important part of sports marketing is the usual celebrity athlete representative. There have been some theoretical reasons for the use of celebrity spokespeople. Some suggest that celebrity endorsers are influential due to their dynamic and their striking and likable qualities. On the other hand, others suggest that celebrity spokespeople can give value to a product from their physical attractiveness and their athletic status. It was also theorized that celebrity endorsers had the ability to transfer cultural meaning from the athlete to the products that they advertised. It’s hypothesized that celebrity athletes act as socialization agents in the Generation Y consumer socialization process.

There are studies that have found that mass media sources greatly impact young adults. Roles such as athletes, entertainers, and more have been known to influence these young adults. It was also reported that media is on of the most important factors for influencing young adults. It was also found that celebrity sports athletes provide positive influence on young adults’ brand loyalty. Sports sociology is known as the tie between society and sports. It observes how values and culture each have an impact on sports and vice versa. It also shows how sports can be related to things such as the media, religion, race, politics, gender, economics, and youth. Sports sociology also determines the link between sports and social mobility as well as social 00000000 inequality.

Many who study sports sociology also have knowledge of the role that media plays in revealing biases. For example, there is often different viewership of various sports by gender. Typically, basketball, hockey, football, baseball, professional wrestling, and boxing are viewed by men. On the other hand, gymnastics, skiing, figure skating, and diving are often watched by women. Also, men’s sports are usually covered more often than women’s sports, whether it be in print or on television.

Social media can often act as a catalyst for success by pushing people and boosting their ideas. In a study provided by Navigate Research, sports fans were 67% more likely to utilize Twitter to greaten their viewing experience as compared to non-sports fans. In 2013, 50% of Tweets that were relative to television in the United States, about 492 million of those Tweets were related to sports events. According to Nielsen, these events comprised 12 of the Top 20 Most-Tweeted-About TV broadcasts of the year. About every sports event or broadcast comes with a hashtag that is displayed on the television screen or at the event. These hashtags are used to engage the audience and create a relationship between them. In some instances, fans commented on different ways that athletes’ actions could change their fans’ perspectives of them. Some athletes and athletic groups have also used Twitter to interact with fans, other teams, and other team members.

Celebrities That Are Good Role Models

The world through the eyes of some can be looked at as a mirror. From birth we are beings that are constantly watching. Babies and kids watch everything that is put in front of them; parents, siblings, television, and other kids that are around. This is especially true when it comes to celebrities. Every day in the modern world we as a society are exposed to the media, which tells us that celebrities can be viewed as good or bad role models. There are many celebrities that can do good things for the world and model behavior that is honorable; through this we as a society can mirror that behavior in our everyday lives.

One celebrity who is an extremely talented model and talk show host, Tyra Banks, can be a model for women and minorities alike. She is host of the UPN/The CW reality television show and America’s Next Top Model, as well as the co-creator of True Beauty. She also hosts her own talk show, The Tyra Banks Show. A few good things that Tyra has done for society to model includes forming the Tyra Banks Scholarship in 1994, which promotes greeting cards under Children + Families Organization to help abused and neglected children.

Tyra took a journey to Costa Rica rainforest to arise the world’s attention about endangered ecosystem. As a model, Tyra challenged weight discrimination by advertising her curves instead of hiding them. One is able to view examples of this in her book titled Tyra’s Beauty Inside and Out. This book does however share beauty secrets that she has learned from experts, she gives practical advice on skin care, cosmetics, hair, exercise, and fashion.

What she also addresses in this book are serious subjects such as substance abuse, romantic relationships, sexual concerns, and being a complete person. She works hard to promote positive self-images for young women of all races and body types on her shows as well; “Why are we so obsessed with weight? ” she said. When Tyra Banks went on her show in her bathing suit and said, “’Kiss my fat ass… ‘ That’s what I feel right now. I’m like, ‘Kiss my fat ass! ‘” she puts her middle finger to those who have to say anything bad about people who are bigger than a size 2.

Another example from one of Tyras’ shows which exhibits women having a healthy body image, in episode Better Body Image, Tyra tries to help change three young women’s distorted perceptions of their bodies. Through this we as women and anybody who feels that they are different are able to look at Tyra and some of the same steps that she has in promoting acceptance throughout the world and we are able to apply this in our everyday lives. There are also many other celebrities that can help the public mirror good behavior.

One major who is highly active in doing charitable things is the lead singer from U2, Bono. Bono writes most lyrics which uses political, social, and religious topics. In the song, “Sunday Bloody Sunday” ‘I can’t believe the news today I can’t close my eyes and make it go away How long, how long must we sing this song How long, how long Tonight we can be as one, tonight Broken bottles under children’s feet Bodies strewn across a dead end street….. ’ Bono addresses the 1972 Bloody Sunday massacre, in which 26 civil rights protesters were shot.

In these lyrics we are able to visualize and feel what Bono is communicating, the sadness in the beginning, and the description of the massacre towards the end. One is able to have more awareness of the world by listening to lyrics as well as having an outlet in times of tragedy. There are hundreds of song lyrics by the Band U2 that highlight issues of the world today that is just one. He has become one of our best known philanthropic performers who has powerful diverse allies which vary from government leaders, religious leaders, popular media, and even global organizations.

In examples through the organization DATA, aimed to eliminate poverty and AIDS/HIV in Africa, also aimed at American citizens to become proactive and voice their opinions regarding political and social issues by contacting senators and legislatures. Product Red is also something promoted by Bono which raises money for the Global Fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis, and Malaria. Product Red is partnered with major companies and when the companies sell things with Product Red logo on it, the funds go to the Global Fund.

We as a society are able to look at Bono, and what he promotes to open our eyes to the current situation of the world and just be more aware. We as a society are also able to look at Bono in general and model/listen to his causes, support his causes by buying Product Red, and even become activists ourselves. With celebrities having the high salaries that they do, they are able to do a bit more with their money than the average person. A charity, being a vivid example in celebrities using money to help the world, is another way we can look up to celebrities and model their good efforts.

One celeb importantly, includes the singer Pink. Pink is involved with many charities including Phoenix vert, Human Rights Campaign, ONE Campaign, Prince’s Trust, New York Restoration Project, Run For The Cure Foundation, Save the Children, Take Back the Night, UNICEF and World Society for the Protection of Animals. Pink was recognized as an advocate for the RSPCA in Australia. Pink also announced she was donating $250,000 to the Red Cross Bushfire Appeal to aid the victims of the bushfires that swept through the Australian state of Victoria.

A total of 173 people were confirmed to have died in the fires with around 500 injured, the death toll was estimated to be 210. Charities are not something that everyone in the world is able to contribute to however, rich or poor we as a society can volunteer at local charities in our neighborhoods and if we have the means we can even contribute to them. Thus proving that we are all able to look throughout the media and at celebrities and model their good doings. The world can be viewed as a harsh place; there is death, disease, famine, killers, and more. The most anybody can do is stay positive and appreciate the good things that occur.

In almost every story there are good guys and bad guys, some very impressionable can follow the wrong path, they can also model the good guys. The good guys in our modern era, being celebrities that do a lot of good and we as a society, can follow their good actions and do good our selves. Some say it is inevitable, we are just constantly in a world of mirrors, just mimicking everything we see, hear, and read. As long as it always doesn’t benefit ‘number one’ then I think it’s a good thing that we see great things being accomplished that way we can strive to do great ourselves.

4 Role Models Who Inspire Girls to Pursue Tech Careers

Table of contents

Think back to the last time you were asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Now think about why you gave the answer you did.

When you’re young, you don’t know what you don’t know — and you can’t aspire to be something you don’t know either. Our early career preferences are shaped by what we read about or watch, what we learn in school and most directly, what we see the people around us doing for a living.

Today, research suggests that the presence of role models isn’t just essential to defining students’ dream jobs, but to rectifying the IT industry’s gender disparity.

Dispelling tech career stereotypes

Only 23 percent of middle and high-school girls surveyed said they had considered pursuing IT careers, according to CompTIA’s recent , Make Tech Her Story: What Needs to Change to Inspire Girls’ Pursuit of Tech Careers. Of the girls surveyed who hadn’t envisioned IT in their future, 69 percent didn’t know what these jobs entailed or what opportunities were available.

Surprisingly, exposure to technology classes and fondness for video games aren’t the main differentiators between girls who contemplate IT careers and those who don’t — it’s role models. Although 37 percent of girls in the survey who knew a relative or friend who worked in IT, this number jumped to 60 percent among girls considering technology jobs.

Many girls today narrowly associate IT jobs with working in consumer tech support roles, or spending hours alone in a cubicle, crunching numbers on a screen. But when girls have a friend or relative who works in the industry, their perception of IT starts to expand beyond the stereotypes.

Ongoing mentorship from a passionate IT professional — someone who can explain why she loves what she does — gives girls a lens through which they can view their own futures.

If we expect to fill the almost projected to be created by 2024, we need to inspire a new class of equal parts boys and girls to follow these career paths. This requires giving girls information: details about what skills are needed to work in IT (beyond math and science), the jobs that exist (beyond coding) and the multiplicity of benefits these jobs offer (from competitive salaries to the ability to travel and help others). Role models are some of the most powerful vehicles for delivering this information.

There are no strict criteria for who can be a strong role model. From founders to public servants, many women work in IT today whose stories can empower girls to consider this growing field. Here are four women with diverse backgrounds who take time (during and outside of their day jobs) to make the IT industry more open and supportive:

Angie Chang

Over the last decade, has worked tirelessly to create opportunities for women in IT. Her resume includes her having co-founded Women 2.0, an online and events-based community for female business and technology entrepreneurs, and having launched the Bay Area-chapter of Geek Girl Dinners, a group bringing local women in tech together for networking and talks hosted by brands like Microsoft and Facebook.

Today, Chang is a vice president at Hackbright Academy, a software engineering school that aims to increase women’s representation in the IT industry.

Michelle Ragusa McBain

is an 11-year Cisco veteran and mother of four devoted to making the technology sector more inclusive. Today, she serves as Cisco’s global customer and partner experience manager, overseeing the company’s alliance with Ingram Micro.

Since 2014, Ragusa McBain has been the executive chair of CompTIA’s Advancing Women in IT community, a group providing women with the resources they need to pursue and grow their IT careers, and helping technology employers create cultures that support a more diverse workforce.

Jessica Williams

began her career by earning a master’s degree in information systems and then building a background in systems integration. But a trip to a Spark & Hustle event opened her eyes to the world of entrepreneurship. In 2011, Williams founded Tech Biz Gurl, a technology consultancy that advises business owners on everything from launching WordPress sites to managing email marketing campaigns.

Aside from holding Cisco and CompTIA certifications, Williams is a co-facilitator for WiSTEM, a 16-week educational program dedicated to assisting female technology entrepreneurs with funding, community and IT resources.

Brenna Berman

As the commissioner and CIO of Chicago’s Department of Innovation and Technology, has set a new national standard for open, agile and data-driven local government. Role models played a crucial role in her career (which includes more than 10 years at IBM): her uncle was a pioneering computer science professor who introduced her to computers as early as kindergarten.

In addition to overseeing IT initiatives for the third largest city in America, Berman sits on the board of the Chicago Entrepreneurial Center, a nonprofit group that manages 1871, the city’s startup community hub.

In sum, for girls figuring about what to be when they grow up, information is power. Although parents and teachers play a major part in shaping girls’ preferences, role models are uniquely equipped to reshape girls’ perception of IT.
