The Arranged Marriage in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, a Play by William Shakespeare
Making two people who don’t love each other get married is horrible. If people get married it should be because they love one another but not because there parents arranged it the marriage. Making a girl obey her father or have to choose between dyeing or becoming a nun is worse. Woman should be able to marry who they want and do whatever they want with there lives.
I Think That Egeus is not doing the right thing because forcing somebody to marry a person that they don’t like is wrong. I know this was back in the day when they use to have arranged marriages but it’s still wrong. If you want your kids to be happy then let them marry the person they truly think they love not some complete stranger.
I understand that Egeus is concerned for his daughter and wants her to marry a man that can protect her from all harm but it’s not his life to control. You can raise your kids however you want but once they get older you have no control in what they do. You just have to let them be independent and hope that you taught your kids well. In the script Theseus tells Hermia that she must obey her father and if she doesn’t she must choose between death or becoming a nun.
