Ibm- Overcome the Stress of Can’t Take Off

Table of contents

How might IBM go about improving its flexible vacation policy to help alleviate some of the stress experience by employees who feel like they can’t take time off? The flexible vacation policy is aim to give employees the option to take limitless days off creates a better work environment. Employees have the autonomy to manage their own workload and take vacation, sick or personal days whenever they need to and for as long as they need. There is no unused time at the end of the year, there is no carry forward into the next year, and there is no payout of accrued days when the employment relationship ends.

Flexible vacation policy can increase the productivity since the employee can choose the where the location they doing their job and when they are doing, these can lead employees more willing to contribute to the organization if they felt their working environment is comfortable. Otherwise, the traditional vacation policy allocates a specific number of vacation, sickness, and personal days to each employee depending on length of time at the company. Sometimes employees are able to carry over a certain portion of unused vacation time into a new year or they can sell back their unused days to the company.

To tracking these days off using costly and time consuming accounting and administration methods. Now there are many companies using flexible vacation policy, such as Netflix, IBM, or Morningstar. Since 2003, IBM had flexible vacation time for every employee. People who work for the company simply give their supervisors a heads up, but otherwise, take time off when they want it. Instead of tracking the hours of employees work, the electronics company has implemented what it calls a “results only work environment,” where workers are measured on achievement alone.

Although flexibility vacation policy can be benefits to the organization, supervisor and employee, flexible work arrangements but it also pose a series of challenges and disadvantages. The stresses experienced by employees who feel like they can’t take time off mostly due to the ongoing project which in on hand, and many colleague taking time off all the same time. These are the two reasons always caused discontented happened in an organization. To deal with these problems IBM trying out a new vacation policy, in which fixed vacation rules are replaced by informal agreements between employees and their immediate supervisor.

The guiding principle is that the work must get done. As long as this is the case, employees can take as much vacation as they want, even on short notice. Avoid ruining the beautiful vacation by being call back during the vacation it is better to hand over or replace the job to someone or make sure the task is fully completed before the holiday tune is on. To make this policy going on effectively that is needed the cooperation of all employees because supervisor concerns about equity.

Supervisors worry about being fair to employees when they know everyone can’t have flexibility. The key is making sure that the process is the same that every employee’s request is fairly considered, even though the outcome may vary. The present of technology in flexible vacation policy may help IBM to overcome the problem of having many colleagues taking vacation at the same time. IBM can create a page for all IBM’s workers-the management information system, to update the newest information and the vacation date employees wanted or planning to take off.

Management of information system is any organized of people, hardware, software, communication networks, data resources and policies and procedures that store, retrieves, transforms and disseminates information in an organization. The system can reduce the chance of error occur, such as forgot to inform their head or supervisor, clash date with colleagues vacation date and so on. To manage this page is needed a person to in charge, to allocate employees leave or vacation based on the system data which updated by employees. Even there is flexible vacation policy but still need some workforce to carry on the organization activities.

Besides that, the communications between organization, supervisor and employee also can reduce the imbalance emotion of the workforce because of they can’t take time off. Annual or semi-annually meeting or a gathering for all workers should be maintain even because of the technology’s reach can provide non specific location for workers to contact with their supervisor or head via computer or cell phone by using video conference, e-mail, mms and so on, but a face-to-face meeting can brings a lot of advantages sometimes. It can avoid conflict happened by using text conversation, it can shows the sincerity and so on.

No matter how flexible the vacation policy is, the contraction between all stages of workforce should be maintain and fix in a time. Example, a general meeting of every department in held on every second week of the month, it is the chance for each department head to meet their workforce and share the newest information in between them. Other than that, company should organize two or more person work in a team so that if one of the member who take day off, there is another person who will replace the position, it can reduce the cases of calling back the worker who is on vacation.

Synergy always can make task to be more efficiency and done with more effectively. If use this way, it brings a lot of advantages. First of all, colleague of the member who is on vacation can response on the continuing job which can save more time and money. Second, it can increase the satisfaction of workers inside the company because they can get their happiness vacation without the obstruction of the job. Grouping work can also increase the effectiveness and efficiency.

Resisting change

Whether it’s the labor shortage, or labor mismatch, the brain drain, the traffic, the new demographics, or technology, there are many profound and reasonable reasons to change the way we work. Being proactive in the face of change is much better than being reactive in this fast-paced business environment. Fears of abuse. There are some employees who may take advantage of their work situation, no matter what the policy. As one supervisor put it, “There are always a few bad apples. They have to be dealt with.

It’s much better to manage for the good apples. ” If employees are well managed, abuses will be kept to a minimum whether the employee works on a flexible arrangement or not.

 Skeletons in the closet

Just because flexibility was tried with one employee in the past and didn’t work doesn’t mean that the same outcome is inevitable if it is tried again—especially if the individual is well matched with the flexible arrangement. Mistakes can be used as important tools in making improvements. It takes more time to manage. Interviews with managers at JPMorgan Chase who supervise employees using some flexible work arrangement reveal far fewer problems than managers anticipated: 95 percent of managers say it does not require more time to manage people on flexible arrangements; 88 percent of managers who are managing employees on flexible work arrangements report no negative impact on their ability to supervise; and 66 percent say managing flexible work arrangements enhanced their management skills.

Long or Short Vacation

Name: Phan Thi Thanh Giang Email: ptthanhgiang@gmail. com ESSAY 1 Topic: Some people believe that students should be given one long vacation each year. Others believe that students should have several short vacations throughout the year. Which viewpoint do you agree? Use specific reasons and examples to support your choice. No one can deny that a vacation has many benefits for students. In Viet Nam, it has long been a controversy whether give a vacation should be long or short.

Most of students think that is great if they have several short vacations each year while others disagree. Both opinions have their own advantages and disadvantages. From my point of view, it is better to have several shorts vacations throughout the years. The reasons are as follows. In my personal experience, almost people like vacations especially students. Short vacations can help students decrease pressures or depressions from their overloaded study, hard examinations and parents’ desires had better than a long vacation. Speaking of study pressures, students always live in a tense state in which they have to cope with a plenty of continuous problems; a series of required knowledge they must study and a chain of examination they must take are ruining children’s pure mind day by day.

To deal with this, one short vacation will be capable of giving a hand to the children who are in need of help to decreases these stresses. The students will have enough time to adapt to occurrence and balance their daily life, their academic study after sorrows. If there’s only one long vacation per year, the students will only have one chance to face one stress while continuous matters happen steadily during the terms. In addition, students can regain energy easier and better by several shorts vacations. Shorter vacations are more rejuvenating.During the year, I am able to take several short trips to smaller towns, beaches, mountains in the surrounding area of where I live and I feel so much more refreshed when returning to study after one of these short vacations. Similarly, with short vacations I am able to sometimes go by myself or take friends, so there is always a sense of variety with each trip.

By contrast, one long vacation can be tiring and at times quite boring. Indeed, after a long vacation, it is so difficult to restart my studying with highest efforts. In almost cases, it takes long time to adapt to study environment. Finally, short vacations make both students and their parents arrange plans for entertain or travel easier than one long vacation. The parents can send their children to short-term holiday camps or just have them travel. Likewise, the students in university can take short tours to domestic vacation spots. Such travels cost less money and are more available than long tours.

Take my relationship for an example. Last summer holiday, my uncle sent my cousins to my grandmother because he did not have time to care of them in approximated 2 months. On the other hand, for one-month vacation, my aunt sent her son to “Army-term summer trip”.He said to me that the trip is the wonderful experience. The issue whether students should be given one long vacation each year or they should have several vacations throughout the year is the one that is open for debate. Although a long vacation has also some advantages, I think short vacation is better in many ways. Students have more chances to decrease pressures or depressions from their overloaded study, hard examinations and parents’ desires.

They can also regain energy easier and better. In addition, short vacations make both students and their parents arrange plans for entertain or travel easier.

5 Ways to Persuade Employees to Take Vacation Before They Burnout

Table of contents

American workers left a stunning in 2015,  fear of heavy workload upon returning and burdening colleagues in their absence. And employees who take time off are reluctant to completely disconnect — 41 percent admitted to touching base with the office while on vacation.

When the team is small and each quarter’s results are make-or-break for the company, it never feels like a good time to step away. But commitment to work may actually be hurting employee performance and burning out good employees.

Burnout is bad for business. Time off decreases stress, boosts productivity and improves work performance. Employees in countries that encourage workers to  are more productive when they’re at work. In addition, burned out employees can actually  because they’re more likely to either make irrational decisions or have difficulty making decisions at all.

From LinkedIn  the week of July 4, to the U.S. Travel Association giving employees who used vacation time , companies are beginning to take time off.

The go-go-go culture of startups can establish unwritten policies that are more powerful than the official ones. Often, it takes a strategic focus to encourage employees to truly take time off to relax, recalibrate and refocus. Here are five tactics that can make a difference:

1. Practice what you preach.

From dress code to time off, my team follows the tone set by the leader. If they see the boss working nonstop, they feel obligated to keep pace. When the boss takes a vacation, employees feel free to follow suit. Be conscious of walking the walk, whether it’s scheduling a day or two off to unplug or pitching in to cover for employees who are away.

Open communication between a leader and his or her team is vital. If leaders are willing to jump in on a task outside the range of their normal responsibilities, they are demonstrating to the entire team that everyone should be willing to help cover for each other. From helping keep the office kitchen disaster-free to sitting with the development team to discuss a hurdle in a re-design project, there’s nothing a leader shouldn’t do to set the example.

2. Learn employee strengths and weaknesses.

One-on-one communication is essential to gauge how each team member is handling the workload. What might take one employee two days to complete may take another a full week, and while team meetings have their purpose, a group setting is not the best for identifying who is feeling burned out.

Establish an open-door policy that encourages regular, individual conversations. Not only does this help leaders get to know how individuals cope with challenges, but it also encourages employees agonizing over project hurdles to ask for help. Knowing employees on a personal level makes it easier for leaders to recognize when individuals need a vacation and encourage them to do so.

3. Schedule around life.

It’s impossible to know everything that is going on with employees outside of the office — some may be caring for young kids or other family members, while others may have community obligations like volunteering or mentoring. Life happens regardless of work goals.

Create a culture that gives employees the flexibility to complete their tasks on a schedule that fits the demands of their life. This is sometimes easier said than done when it comes to important collaborative tasks, but providing options can pay off in productivity and employee satisfaction.

4. Change the terms you use.

A simple thing like changing the vocabulary you use to describe days off can make employees more comfortable about taking them. Be mindful that high-stress events like losing loved ones or minor stresses like an unexpected broken air conditioner happen every day to people, and often people prefer to keep these struggles private.

Switching terms to “personal” or “flexible” instead of “sick” or “bereavement” time, for example, gives employees permission to use the time how they need it without feeling like they have to meet certain criteria.

5. Announce a surprise holiday.

When employees aren’t taking enough time off, consider creating an unplanned office holiday. When my team reaches a milestone and everyone is low on physical and mental energy, I like to send out an email giving the option to extend the weekend by a day or two. I always make sure everyone knows I’ll be doing the same.

Personal days are a great way to encourage personal time off with no questions asked — for employees, they can provide a much-needed break without making anyone worry about getting in trouble.

Preventing employee burnout through a vacation-friendly culture is just as vital to a company’s success as expense forecasts and strategic plans. Encouraging employees to step away from work actually results in increased dedication and productivity. And that’s exactly what every startup needs.

My Best Vacation Ever

My best vacation ever was my first trip to Disneyland. Something that I have always dreamt about was about to come true. First we researched ticket prices. We found a great price on So Cal City passes including three theme parks. The next step for us was finding a place to stay. All hotels were booked around the Disneyland park. We found a great deal 20 minutes away. Our trip was booked. We were counting down the days, looking for landmarks along the drive, and restaurants on a budget we never tried. I would Like to tell you about my best vacation ever. As we entered Disneyland we were amazed.

The park opened October 5, 1955 and was built In 365 days but It look brand new. As we walked down main street towards the castle, we could smell all the concessions, because they pump smells throughout the park. The castle looked closer than It really was, this was because of a force perspective In the buildings on Mall Street. As your exiting It looks much larger. Also the buildings are designed to look bigger than they actually are. While standing in line for various rides, we searched Disneyland secrets. We found out that there is a quarter of a basketball court and ping pong table inside the top third of the Mattering.

This is a break room for employees only. When we were planning for our trip we used principle. Com After searching hotels around the park that could fit 6 people our luck ran out. The only available rooms were the parks signature hotels for $800 a night which was way out of our budget. We searched nearby and found Chase Suite Hotel twenty minutes away in Bread, California. So we booked a two bedroom suite through the hotels website at an incredible price. The rooms were amazing, and private. It was like a large apartment with a full sized kitchen and living room. I highly recommend this hotel.
