Day dealings

Day to day dealings are characterized by individual struggles. People make decisions and choose the right options to take before specific actions are taken. These day to day affairs exemplify in one way or another, a character of being a leader. It is not expected that people act alone at all times. Many times do they refer to others for opinion particularly in matters of complicated nature and so have to act in groups. This time, team leadership comes into play.

This paper treats of team leadership as a concept and its related aspects such as characteristics of an effective team leader viewed in the light of the construction industry and possible problems therein. Moreover, this paper includes an evaluation of the efficacy of a team leadership questionnaire directly linked with the topic. Team leadership, concept Leadership is the ability to set and define specific sets of directions to be observed and followed by the members or the group in the course of the performance of a particular job aimed at meeting the specified goals and objectives.

Additionally, it pertains to the ability to affect, shape and influence the behavior of other people towards the accomplishment of a particular job in relation to the established goals. In the workplace, leadership is seen by the ability of a manager to require performance of his subordinates, without the employment of force or coercion, that is, performance on the part of the subordinates voluntarily and willingly, using their knowledge and expertise in the fulfillment of their respective duties and tasks.

In particular, this is shown by the ability of a manager to effective translate corporate goals and visions to individual tasks and equitably distribute these tasks to the members or subordinates. Subsumed in the concept of leadership is team leadership. Team leadership is characterized by team unity in the performance of the group task. The decision is come up with after consultation on the subordinates on the courses of action to be taken.

In particular, a team leadership is one where the burden of fulfilling the task at hand is not primarily and solely on the leader but is shared with the rest of the team, seeing the same vision and having the same mission. The team is not treated as composed of individual employees as in the case in the workplace but a collective body taking the away the traditional concept of leadership whereby the leader makes the decision and the makes the option for the team.

In short, it one characterized by participation and coordination among members and collective effort of everyone, may he be a leader or otherwise. Team leadership viewed in the light of the construction industry, is essential in the effective accomplishment of the construction work. Be it noted that in a construction work, the job is both physical and mental. Physical, in the sense that it involves the exertion of force in the building and construction of particular structures.

It is one of a mental process in the sense that the workers must be ensure that the building is properly constructed following the detailed and meticulous instructions provided in the blueprint, ensuring the safety and security of the future users of the same. In this regard, participation and involvement of every employee or crew are essential. For instance, one crew can not work on his own without consulting his team on the proper design, appropriate proportion of length and width of a material, appropriate materials to be used and the proper measurements.

As a structure has to be built proportionately taking into account the appropriate measurements, so is the decision of the team. All aspects necessary to ensure a successful construction project must be come up with the necessary consultation in such a way that the desired goal as laid down is met. Moreover, where crews are given different tasks does not mean they can act on their individual volition. A crew can not at any time rush to finish his part while leaving the rest of the crew at the first phase of the construction. Each must go hand in hand with each other.

The present practicum proposal shows an effective team leadership. It is worthy to note that the team is given a specific timeline within which to accomplish the desired objectives. By this, a crew can not remain idle and wait for the rest of the crew to accomplish their individual assignments. Corollary, one can not just proceed to finish his task without waiting for the rest of the team particularly where the task requires coordination among all crews. As can be observed, the proposal is a step by step process and so requires the coordination of each member.

Additionally, the proposal has never been a work of just one person. It may have been initiated by just one or a few, but the task includes the participation of all the crews particularly in the actual performance of the specific tasks and on matters where expertise is expected from the crews themselves. Effective team leadership An effective team leadership is characterized by the following factors:

  • commitment to people
  • team leadership is unique in a way that a task is done as a team and the accomplishment if any, is a product of a collective body.

Each team member is committed to work with each other without hesitation but collaborates with each other. This aspect should characterize task in a construction project. The latter should be characterized by coordination in all aspects, from the development of the framework of the structure to the actual performance of individual tasks. In the course of the job, it should be born in mind that one has to consult another. This expectation is seen in the proposal. Each crew is assessed on his individual skill and matches the same on the desired qualities necessary in the construction work.

One can not be hired simply because he has the ability to finish his assigned job but must also have the ability to work hand in hand with the other crews. Also, it is important to note that the proposal seeks to obtain the approval or opinion of an expert among the team on the effectiveness of what should be attained at a particular time. Standards are likewise set for the team to observe. More importantly, the part of the proposal whereby notifications are given to contractors and subcontractors is quiet impressive. This is an example of proper coordination.

  • proactiveness;

While each member of the team thinks to do the task as a team, one must not rely on the other. He has got to have an attitude of doing his task by himself as assigned. Each must have the willingness to comply with his assigned task taking into account the task of the whole team.

  • enthusiasm, energy;

Working with a team at times puts pressure to each of the members of the team. It is incumbent of each member to be enthusiastic in the performance of his task not only for himself but also for the team. Considering that in a team leadership, everyone acts in coordination and in harmony with each other, performance of one really affects the other or shall we say the rest of the team.

  • will power;

The same premise in the immediately preceeding paragraph, each member of the team must have decided to work with a team and coordinate with the rest of the members for harmony in the work place.

This is essential in a construction work considering that the work required in it is both mental and physical. Moreover, construction work as herein presented in the proposal, involves several phases. Each crew must therefore commit to himself and to the team his desire to finish the tasks as assigned to them considering that such kind of work is really a team effort. The accomplishment of a single phase involves the participation of all from the employees of the contractor with the assistance of the sub contractor as the case may be.

  • continuous improvement;

Team leadership or work by a team in general would at times yield unfavorable results among them, not because one member being at fault or otherwise but because there are really instances in the workplace which are beyond human control. Imperfections or defects in the course of the work may sometimes occur and must be dealt with professionally by all members. The aim of each must not to pull down one another but to seek for further improvement of individual performance.

  • ability to accomplish the task as a team

Each member must be determined to work with his team. In a construction work, not only will one has to work with the rest of the team but must likewise consult the same for some acts which may affect the performance of the job. Possible problems and how to resolve the same Where a team is involved in the performance and accomplishment of a particular task, it is not uncommon that conflicts may arise. Conflict may result from misunderstandings among members in the assigned task, for instance, one expects that his task is limited to this extent and expects that another person does the rest, when in fact it is the former who is bound to do the same.

Also, conflict may arise in the salaries or wages of the employees. One may see his employer or the team leader as unfair in giving one member a higher salary than him, without due regard to the amount of task they each perform. There are however conflicts that may arise from personal matters, and not work related. These are not also uncommon and so must be seen beforehand and remedy be provided to resolve the conflict without sacrificing the task at hand or prejudicing the company for which a team works. These types of conflict may be resolve by providing a grievance machinery.

A grievance machinery is a procedure where internal conflict among members are resolve first by the members themselves before appropriate action may be taken to the higher level or worst to the courts. Second, where the grievance machinery is not effective, the contract setting forth the team project must provide for voluntary arbitration as a means of resolving a conflict. Voluntary arbitration is a mode of dispute resolution where a particular conflict is to be resolved by an impartial third person, with the cooperation of the parties involved in the dispute.

While these are specifically set forth in the contract, it is well to note that each member of the team must be able to understand his respective role and assignment and task to be performed hand in hand with the team. One can not work at any time according to his will but must cooperate with the team. That is job description must be properly understood by each in order to prevent confusion on individual task. This also prevents overlapping of tasks. Moreover, employees must be paid according to an established standard taking into account individual skills and competencies.

This is a matter which each member must also understand to prevent jealousy and resentment among members. Competition among the members of the team would not work for the benefit of the team, thus, each one must work in harmony with each other. These matters are applicable in a construction industry particularly that a construction team is composed of several members. Often they are from different contractors or subcontractors, therefore with different employers. Each group must have focus on their respective roles but must work in coordination with another group of different role. Efficacy of the questionnaire

The idea of having a questionnaire is impressive. As has been said, one would not know the effectiveness and efficiency of his performance unless he has opinions from third persons who assess his performance. The questionnaire serves this purpose. The questions are presumed to have been relevant that would measure the perception of the members or the crew pursuant to the appropriate statistical method. Thus, the same shall be respected. However, in the Lickert scale, the options of the respondents must not be limited to just four options as ‘false’, ‘more false than true’, ‘more true than false’ and ‘true.

’ The same should have provided for an option for ‘undecided. ’ Although this option may give the respondents the idea of not answering or just choosing ‘undecided’ leading to your failure to obtain the desired result, providing for the same is but proper. Respondents must properly be given the options in order to properly measure and know their perception. The inclusion of open ended question is also appropriate particularly where the competence of another person, in this case, the team leader is assessed.

There are other basis of competency which may be explained in different ways and perceived in different ways and better measured by asking open ended questions. It should be noted however that while open ended questions are proper, the same must be subjected to appropriate statistical application to assure relevance and significance of the results gathered. Conclusion Team leadership finds relevance in a construction work. In the latter kind of work, several persons are involved must each be committed towards the accomplishment of the desired goal.

One has to be minded of his own task with due regard to the vision of the team. Moreover, in a construction work, coordination is necessary and so the participation of everyone is ideal.

Being Honest The Night The Day

Being honest can seem very hard to do, but will make things very easier in the end. Babbles Nicole proves this very effectively and makes It very evident by the end of her short story. She shows that lying only causes stress, trouble and places a very large wedge between friendships. It’s generally assumed that being honest the first time around will prevent that. Lying causes stress, trouble and separates friends, being honest at first will prevent that and make you a better person for the future because an ounce of prevention is always worth more than a pound of cure.

KOOK and Bendable, two main character of Absinthe’s short story, become curious one day before school and decide to start a lab experiment of their own with the schools stuff. Upon doing this, they break a thermometer and decide to hide It from their teacher, Mr.. ABA. Once discovered, Mr.. ABA gave all the kids in the class a chance to be honest so they could avoid punishment, but to no avail. “Since no one has owned up; I’m afraid I shall detain you all for an hour aftershock” (Nicole 3). Mr..

ABA wants to teach the kids honest and is using peer pressure to do so. With KOOK knowing this, he begins to feel the unbearable pressure of those around him and wants to confess of his crimes to relieve the burden that’s been haunting him. ABA, decides to do a Bible and Key ritual to catch the liar, he selects Kook to hold the bible for him because of his honest face, and this Just petrifies Kook even more. “Trembling and shivering as if ice-cold water had been thrown over him” (Nicole 5).

This causes Kook to have a reality check in his head because he was selected to hold the bible and he as a arson doesn’t really seem like he can go on much longer keeping up that lie. Lying not only causes stress, but self-inflicted mental wounds to the liar as well. Not only does lying cause stress and pain In the liar, but It can also cause pain and stress among others as well. The kids in the classroom begin discussing amongst themselves trying to determine and deduce the culprit from among them.

They begin to suspect a kid named Bass and begin to ridicule him because of it. “Someone threw and book at Bass and said “Confess… Yes, He must’ve done it” (Nicole 7). Bass immediately became the prime target of the other students because he was early to the class that day, and although not said, It might be because of his Armenian ethnicity as well. Even the teacher will show some prejudice later on. Anyway, after constant ridicule from the students, Bass gets a Cut across his forehead from all the thrown objects mixed in with all the yelling and taunts. A small cut had appeared on his temple, he was bleeding “now they will hate me even more” Base is in tears because he already has trouble fitting in amongst the kids, but now that they think he s responsible for them missing the game, the will dislike him for even more than Just his Armenian heritage. So not only does It hurt the liar, but It affects others In negative ways as well. Lying is a big wedge between friendships as well. Kook is the more mature of the two, whilst Bendable is a child. Bendable wants to just lie and forget about the incident but Kook has other ideas in mind and it begins to tear them apart. . 0 need to shout, old man. After all, it was your idea” m{o started the argument, don’t be childish” (Nicole 8). Kook wants to tell the truth because he’s beginning to realize It’s the right thing to do and Bendable objects strongly. KOOK begins to progress morals. When KOOK informs Bendable of his intentions to tell the truth, Bendable threatens him like a child. “He told Bendable that he was going to confess Bendable had said threateningly that he better not mention his name” (Nicole 8). KOOK is not only learning honesty is better, but it is beginning his progression into the future but Bendable wants to hide like a coward.

This pries apart KOOK and Bendable even more ND thus shows that honest is better than lying than being a child about life because you will never progress into the mature future. Lying causes trouble, stress and pain in the liar and in others. Being honest will prevent most of those negative outlets and will even further you as a person much more than you would think as shown in Babyish Insole’s As the Night the Day. KOOK realized honesty is best and progressed into his mature future and away from childish Bendable because an ounce of prevention is always worth more than a pound of cure.

Saturday Night and Sunday Morning Critical Analysis

Director Karel Reisz’s Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, the classic story of an angry young man, heralded a new kind of cinema for British audiences. Saturday Night and Sunday Morning is a classic social realist film of the British New Wave. Made in 1960, it was groundbreaking in both its portrayal of the industrial nightmare of working class factory life, and its unrepentant, cocky anti-hero Arthur Seaton. The British New Wave and La Nouvelle Vague Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (1960) was Karel Reisz’s first feature film, made in the light of a number of outstanding documentaries from the Free Cinema movement.

Interestingly, this film emerged at the same time as Jean-Luc Godard’s debut feature A Bout De Souffle (Breathless). Reisz and Godard, the enfant terrible of the French New Wave, shared certain traits. Both were critics turned film-makers whose debut films were the first commercial hits of their respective new waves, and both films were anti-establishment pieces from directors with political agendas. The Angry Young Man Saturday Night and Sunday Morning was a film to which many people could relate.

Alan Sillitoe, who adapted his book for the screen, was the creator of one of the original angry young men of cinema history, Arthur Seaton. Arthur is a working class anti-hero whose boredom of factory life is assuaged only by his reckless attitude to life. Trapped in a dead end job, Arthur represents the individual against the system. He makes the most of his leisure time in an attempt to escape the mediocrity of his life. Arthur is blunt and cocky, out for a good time with women, booze and a well cut suit. But he is angry about the restrictions placed on him by his working class life.

The cause of this aggression – factory life – united a public who recognized his anger. Cinema attendances reflected the fact that this was one of the first times audiences felt their own lives were represented on screen. Fatally Flawed At the beginning of the film Arthur is having an affair with Brenda, a married woman, who he gets pregnant. He tries to help her when she says she wants an abortion, although ultimately this is unsuccessful. It is a testament to the film-makers that this storyline does not alienate audiences.

In fact, for all his gruff, rabble rousing, Arthur remains a likable, if flawed, character. He is seen to get a sort of comeuppance when Brenda’s brother in law beats him up at the Nottingham Goose Fair, but audience sympathy is still with Arthur. This is also due in no small part to Albert Finney’s amazing portrayal of Arthur as a working class lad coming to bitter terms with the responsibilities of manhood. The Midlands – A Backdrop For Social Realism Setting the film in Nottingham adds a further dimension of imprisonment, through iconography which has since been integrated into British cinema.

The imposing chimney stacks and factories serve to increase the feelings of claustrophobia and provincial entrapment. Karel Reisz had already shown in his documentaries Everyday Except Christmas and We Are The Lambeth Boys that ordinary people could provide stories and entertainment, but his directors vision also demonstrates a poeticism of social problems. The views Reisz portrays through his lens have become embedded in British films, and typify a landscape still seen today in any British film within the social realist cannon.

Colombus Day

Justice, pride, and arrogance lie and when they are crossed; however, humane treatment and respect – whether that be self- respect or respect for others – Is black and white. Columbus day Is a holiday In which Americans celebrate a man who Is not even an American, but better yet the Spanish- acclaimed Viceroy and Governor of the Indies and Admiral of the Seas who overpowered and subjected a whole land of natives to succumb to his rule, follow his logon and traditions, and be brutally beat while being forced Into slavery.

Although his ability to assume power and Instill fear Into these people so quickly may be admirable, he Is not a figure that deserves the respect of Christian Americans, or let alone any Americans: and only deserves to be “honored” In a day of mourning. To begin with, Christopher Columbus sailed into this land and was greeted with kindness and peace by the natives, in which he returned with the order of the kidnapping of six natives to be his servants. Columbus simply saw these indigenous people as an obstacle in his pursuit of riches and glory, and treated them as such.

The natives did have their practices of violence and brutality in which other humans were sacrificed to their native Gods or means of punishment were rather severe, but this did not beckon or welcome the brutality inculcated by Christopher Columbus and the rest of his team. Even more interestingly, Columbus’ writings back to Spain made himself sound very respectful and appreciative of the Indians; however, after rather inspection, Columbus’ malice shows through even what appears to be kindness and gratuity.

In his log kept about the New World, he writes that these indigenous people are of the kindest, best people, and that he told his men to take nothing from them without giving them something in return. This, at first glance, seems like an exhibit of kindness, yet the Spaniards never gave back anything of equal value to the Indians. Columbus discusses how he would receive very gracious, generous gifts from the indigenous people -knowing and acknowledging that they ere very poor people-, and return it with a gift of no more value than that of a penny.

In continuation, it is highly hypocritical that Christopher Columbus had viewed their practices of religion as malicious and Inappropriate for a civilization, then forced Christianity upon them with Inhumanity and savagery. This Is baffling because the Spaniards are going Into this foreign world Introducing a concept of a loving and benevolent God as they simultaneously kill these people and cut off their feet all for the glory of this mysterious supposedly-awesome God.

As Christians, they are commanded by God to love others as you love yourself and to reflect a level of Jesus’ kindness when they Instead they reflected the greed, hatred, and self- righteousness of the devil. So, not only were his actions directly affecting these natives lives, but also the appearance of Charlatanry as a whole. Columbus’ take on Christianity and God actually intensifies the inhumanity and violence caused against as an excuse to execute all heathens; indigenous people.

However, in reality, he was imply slaughtering thousands of innocent people who did nothing wrong except for having contrasting opinions with that of the intruding Spaniards. In conclusion, from the day that Columbus arrived to the New World, he treated the people with nothing but dignity and self-pride. Although he did “discover” the land that would later become America, he is only responsible for the deaths, severe mistreatment, and forced enslavement of multiple indigenous people. Columbus Day should be recognized as a day of mourning for the unwarranted brutality suffered by unexciting natives of the land.

My First Day at Work

Interface, defined by the dictionary as a common boundary or interconnection between systems, equipment, concepts, or human beings. It is what allows two very different objects to share a connection. How can the word interface be applied to exhibits at museums? I quickly realized that answer after paying a visit to the American Museum of Natural History. At the museum, there are these galleries consisting of various taxidermies of animals. Each animal had its own display case and the case was decorated and painted to look as close to its natural habitat as possible.

As I stop to look at these animals in their display cases and appreciate the work that the artists put in to emulate its surroundings, I began to feel as if I am in the plains of Africa, standing next to a zebra, or in the deep woods of the Rocky Mountains in front of a Grizzly Bear. I began to imagine what it would be like if I were actually at these places that these animals lived. Then as I walk into the oceanic section, they had the same setup for the marine life. There was this particular showcase that for some reason was so powerful to me that it sent chills down my spine.

It was of a whale and a giant squid tangled in a deep-sea battle. The longer I stared at it the more I felt this battle was actually happening in front of me as if any moment, these two animals going to come to life. The reason I chose to talk about these animal showcases is because the way that it made me feel. The animals posed so naturally and the realistic installations served as an interface between me and the deep-sea animals and the wildlife of the jungle. I think these showcases are good examples of interface in museums because it helped me visualize what these places are like in real life.

PressureToday

Today in our modern society cheating in school is growing at a rapid rate, but who is to blame, is it the school system is it students or is it the teachers. I strongly believe that it is not only the student’s fault but the school systems as well. To begin, cheating among students has rapidly increased. The numbers are crazy; statically 2 out of every 3 kids have cheated on a test, homework, ect. “Cheating in school is rampant and getting worse 64% of students cheated on a test in the past ear and 38% did so too or more times up from 60% to 35% in a 2006 survey'(David Crary).

Which raises the question why are so many students cheating. Its not like they don’t know everybody knows that cheating is wrong, you learned that as a kid and you constantly here it till you are out of school. I believe that students cheat because they want a good grade and that they don’t trust themselves enough to write down what they think when they can Just look over there shoulder and get an answers they think s better than theirs so they can get a good grade, because in this day and age the difference of one A or B can mean a good collage or a great one.

As the demand for higher educated people grows so does the pressure and that’s why students cheat, because they can easily take a C, D, or even an F if they wanted to and not cheat, but their logic is why get a easy F when you can gets a easy A. Next is the school system and how it works, and how I believe it greatly impacts and influences the students of are modern generation to cheat.

To explain, are school ystem is revolving around grades and scores and if you get a A then you are considered smart and you fully understand the topic and are more likely to get accepted into a good school, but since we are seeing so many students cheat because of this system that we are initially hurting are generation and really only making more of are generation not as smart as the previous generations. Part of the reason high school students cheat is to get into a good University, but as the universities get more competitive and raise their standards even higher it really nfluences and pressures us high school students to cheat.

So we can do good and initially get into the universities we want. I believe we should change the school systems to a system were there are no grades and we should Just focus on trying to make are students understand the material as opposed to Just getting a good score not knowing if the student understand the material of Just cheated to get a good grade to pass on to the next grade and initially get into a good University later on in his or her future. pressure By sammy2314

Republic Day Narrative Essay

“No Hindu, No Muslim, No Christian, We are just Indian. ” Respected judges, respected teachers and dear audience. Today we gather here to celebrate one of the National festivals of India, it is Republic day. It is a great opportunities for me, as you allowed me to share few words on this occasion. On this day, it was January 26, 1950 we declared our country as a Republic country by adopting our own constitution.

Actually, the preparation of our constitution was over earlier than this date but we choose January 26 for this, because this date has its own significance earlier than this day. It was January 26, 1930 on the bank of river Ravi, our freedom fighters pledged to attain “Sampurna Swaraj” and started new agitations to make India freedom from the British Rule. So, on 1950 on this day we declared our India as a Sovereign, Democratic and Republic. As this festival is related to our nation, it is celebrated all over our country.

It celebrated in schools, colleges, government and non government offices and industries. It becomes a public festival as every Indian celebrates it. On the eve of this day, our honourable President gives a message to the nation. In his/her message he/she analyses the achievements of government and gives indications towards the future plans of the government towards the welfare of our country. All over the country people celebrates this festival. In national capital Delhi, there is a grand celebration.

People from every corner of the country come here to participate in the grand Republic day celebration. The grand celebration occurs at the India Gate and Rajpath of New Delhi. The entire route is decorated with our national flags. Many foreign delegates also come to witness India’s progress on this occasion. At the beginning of the celebration, our Prime Minister salutes the martyrs of soldiers who laid their life lives for our country on Amar Jawan Jyothi, at the India Gate. Then he moves towards the celebration point.

Then our President comes to the celebration point who is welcomed by our Prime Minister. All the commanders of three wings, Air Force, Army and Navy come to participate in the grand celebration. After this, flag hosting happens by our president and as soon as it completes we give a grand salute to our national flag by singing “Jana Gana Mana…. “. Then the award ceremony starts, our president gives valuable awards for those who sacrificed their life in different situations for our country and countrymen.

Even some kids also selected for bravery awards for this occasion, who showed their braveness while miserable conditions. Then the grand parade starts from the Vijay Chowk by all different wings, such as Army, Navy, Air force, Paramilitary forces, NCC, Tanks, Anti aircraft missiles, radars etc. Then a cultural program is organized by school children. After this dance program, tableaux from different states and national territories move on the route to show their culture and progress to the world.

At the final stage aircrafts of Indian Air Force shows their talents in the sky. They send a message to the world that sky also in their limit. Overall, I can say it is not only the day of celebration but also the day to remember those great lives who sacrificed everything for this country. We should take a resolution to work for our country and its progress. So, at the end I want to say one thing that, we may from different region or religion but we are one, only one Indian. So, think about this country before thinking about your religion or region. Jai Hind.
