4 Ways to Find the Right Freelance Writer for Your Blog

Table of contents

It’s no secret that using high quality written blog content can improve your overarching marketing efforts. In fact, plan to create more content than last year.

While creating exceptional written content seems simple in theory, consistent execution is where some content marketers run into trouble. Add in the pressure to create high-performing content faster and suddenly your processes (and schedule) become chaotic.

Learn how to find and hire experienced freelance writers to alleviate your burden, improve your blog content, execute your content strategy at scale, and help you remain focused on your day-to-day tasks.

1. Identify and reach strong writers.

When you see an excellent piece of writing, you know it. The words seem to speak directly to you, address your current pain points, or urge you to take action. You likely come across great blog content every few weeks as you browse the web.

If you’re looking for an outstanding freelance writer, start keeping track of the writing style, tone, publication and the author of content that you read and enjoy — particularly if the content is relevant to your industry or blog. A Google Doc or Evernote should suffice for ongoing notes.

Related:

In most blog content, there is an author byline with links to more of their writing, an informative bio, and social channels. Copy and paste this information into your notes. After compiling a list of  six to10 viable freelance writers, your next task is to narrow the list by researching more about the author. Read their social channels, related content or portfolio, and any publications that they contribute content to.

Remember that these writers will help establish the voice of your brand — so be sure to perform thorough research to determine if they would be a good match to create your blog content. Pay special attention to any conflict of interests or links to competitors in their writing as this could be an issue further down the line.

After identifying a group of candidates, draft an outreach email, LinkedIn message, or prepare for a discovery phone call to increase your chances of hiring the best writer.

The key to your outreach is to concentrate on being transparent with your intentions while getting to the point quickly. For example:

Jacob,

Really enjoyed your article titled, “” in Entrepreneur. I am interested in hiring a writer for 2-3 articles a month. Would you be interested in a discovery phone call or sending me a quote for your services?

Cheers,

With this outreach strategy, you can find writers that already meet your writing standards and understand your industry. This can save you resources when it comes to vetting incoming applications, reading writing samples, training a new writer, and editorial time once you’ve received content.

2. Explore freelance writer job boards.

Another method for finding qualified freelance writers is by using job boards and specialty writing marketplaces. To increase the odds of finding a professional freelance writer, start your search at a “copywriter-centric” job board such as Copyblogger’s list, Freelancewritinggigs.com, WriterAccess, or a writing , etc.

It’s important to note that these options widely differ from other more generic job boards such as Craigslist, Monster or Upwork and are stronger resources to handle your writing needs because they are specifically targeted to quality freelance writers.

Related:

Beyond freelance job boards, writer marketplaces are designed to provide a more managed experience and are more likely to reliably create your blog content at scale because they have access to thousands of excellent writers. In other words, they are experienced in finding you the best team of freelance writers to match your needs which help reduce your headaches and growing pains.

When selecting a job board, don’t forget to consider the strengths and weaknesses of your current content marketing efforts like strategy, distribution, management, and measurement. These considerations can help you find a writer that better compliments your content team.

For example, if your current team has strong strategic direction and well-managed processes in place, then you should search for a writer that also has expertise in content distribution to better round out your team.

Killing two or three birds with one stone makes everyone happier.

3. Leverage subject matter experts.

One challenge you’ll likely come across is finding a freelance writer that understands your industry and marketing nuances, at least at a level that you and your team is accustomed. This is particularly a challenge in more technical spaces such as healthcare, government, or legal.

Finding a freelance writer that is also a subject matter expert in your industry can end up being a more extensive search than finding your typical writer and simply may not be a viable option as you scale. Some writing marketplaces can efficiently connect you with qualified subject matter experts, so make sure that you identify a solution that matches your industry needs.

If you’re having difficulty hiring a subject matter expert or you’re tired of asking your in-house experts to write all of your blog content, consider using your team to oversee and train your writers over time.

In order to accomplish this, look for a freelance writer who is looking for an ongoing partnership. You’ll want to test your candidate to make sure that they are a strong listener, open to criticism and allows multiple written revisions on their work. Communication skills are also key traits.

Related:

After finding your candidate, start them with basic writing assignments to introduce them into your organization and industry. Then, have your subject matter experts begin introducing more difficult assignments and coaching along the way. You should know within the first few writing assignments if your freelance writer is a good match for your team.

While this training process can take more time to get your freelance writer up to snuff, it can save your organization resources and help you develop better onboarding processes for more writers in the long run.

4. Search your network, ask your connections.

This may sound like old-fashioned networking, but some of the best freelance writing candidates may already be within your network. As a first step, login to your LinkedIn profile and look for, “freelance copywriter” in the search bar. The search results will include any first or second-degree connections that you have with freelance copywriter skills.

Finding writers that are already in your network can add peace of mind before making a hire, because you can identify who they’ve worked with, ask your connections what it was like to work with them, and request references.

Consider connecting with fellow content marketers, community managers, and professional editors to expand your network. Next, openly ask for their opinions on working with freelancers, challenges that they’ve experience and whether they know of any high-quality blog content creators in your industry.

Additionally, don’t be afraid to ask other professionals while networking at conferences or speaking at events. You may be surprised at what you can find by being vocal about your writing needs and challenges.

As a final rule of thumb, you should always be diligent by researching your freelance writer’s content portfolio, asking for professional references, studying their LinkedIn profile and other social channels and reaching out to any mutual connections to help avoid any headaches in the future.

Still Life with Skull and Writing Quill

This painting was called Skull Life with a Skull and a Writing Quill. It was created by Pieter Claesz in the year of 1628.

This was actually one of the earliest pieces of his career in painting these stills. He was an artist that gave extraordinary presence to familiar things. In this painting there’s a big skull that you can’t miss in the middle of everything. This skull looks to be like 100 years old.It has one long slash on the top of its skull, like if someone came and slashed him with a knife or something. The front of its face looks smashed up and caved in. The brown on it makes it seem interesting.

It gives the skull a nice ageing look as if it’s been around for hundreds of years. Unlike any other skulls though this one has an overturned glass on the side of its face. Looks as if someone forced it in there. And if you look closely you can see the reflection the glass from the skull. You could also see the reflection of a window.See the frame and everything. This skull is laying on what looks like a journal.

It has to be a journal cause there’s a feather pen. Those pages on the journal look ridiculously old. There is one of those old lamps that were used back in the day. Those that lit up with fire and not electricity. Your able to see distinguish between the lights versus dark in the painting. If you squint you can see some kind of writing on the right side of the painting. Can’t really see what it says though.

I chose this painting because it seemed very interesting.I looked through a bunch of different pieces of art done by him and a lot of them have skulls in it. For some reason. And then he just adds random things in it to make the painting stand out more. This artist takes ordinary things and make them into something that you never seen before. For example the glass in the skull. I have never seen that anywhere before.

I like the way he emphasized the light vs. dark in this painting. You are able to see where the still light is and how it makes every other object in this painting pop out.I think that one of the reasons why he added the journal in there was to show that whoever that skull is suppose to be might have been a very good and bright writer. In this painting I see the life of a brilliant writer who died with his knowledge. His whole career is shown in this one little piece. One of the things that catch my eyes in artwork is creativity and this guy took whatever possible and he turned it into art.

Who would of thought that by randomly adding a feather with a skull and a glass could of made something into one of the greatest early still light paintings.

7 Ways Every Entrepreneur Can Become a Better Writer

Table of contents

You get paid to think. But because thoughts are invisible, they’re hard to improve: that’s why you need to write them down. Then you have a snapshot of your mind on the page, which you can enhance at will. But you’ll need the right tools first.

With the 7 tips in this article, the only limit to your thinking is effort and practice.

Writing is thinking refined.

To become a better writer, you must become a sharper thinker. Each word must connect intelligently to the next, just like each sentence, and each paragraph. Otherwise you lose your reader. Your finished product, whether an article, a memo, a proposal or a novel, is nothing more than polished thoughts rearranged to make the most sense.

If your thinking is muddy, your sentences become muddy. Your subjects disconnect from their predicates and the action is swamped by excess adverbs. You lose a sense of direction. You lose competence to convey your meaning. You lose command of yourself, and everything connected to your thoughts — like your business.

But, with a pen, paper and persistence, you will learn to refine your thoughts bit by bit.

After a week you’ll have more clarity. A month will sharpen your persuasiveness and give you greater control of your business decisions. A year will reveal the genius you never knew you had.

So clear space in your schedule for 30 minutes of writing — of refined thinking — each weekday. Then follow these seven directives to reach higher levels of thinking. It’ll make you rich.

1. Know what you want to say.

If you don’t have crystal clarity on what you want to say, your audience — employees, investors, clients –will be left in the dark, possibly cussing under their breaths.

So take time to make the thing clear in your mind before writing. Do as much research as necessary, then do more. Define your purpose of writing. Then deliver your first line with the weight of your purpose behind it.

Related:

2. Let it flow.

Since most of writing is actually rewriting — the first draft merely serving as a platform for refinement — you don’t need to worry about perfection. Just let flow. You can make your writing more perfect with each rewrite.

“I’m not a very good writer, but I’m an excellent rewriter.” James A. Michener, famed author of over 40 books.

Some people can enter the flow of writing easier than others, but anyone can improve by practicing non-judgment. It doesn’t matter how good or how bad it is. With sufficient rewrites, you will make it better.

If you can’t seem to peck a key, just start writing about anything — even if it’s about how you can’t write. Simply typing will condition your brain to release your thoughts onto the paper or screen without judgment. Then you can rewrite and refine until you’ve crafted a powerful and compelling train of thought.

Once you’ve found your flow, it’s time to hone your focus.

Related:

3. Keep the focus.

You need flow, but you also need focus — a level platform on which to build your thoughts. If your focus weaves this direction, then that, if it dips and rises and veers and disintegrates, you won’t have much to refine. So keep tabs on your focus while writing.

If you feel you’re losing track of the theme, stop yourself, then go back to the point where you left your focus. You’ll have to strike a balance of flowing and pulling back, flowing, and pulling back. But in time, you’ll intuitively stop yourself during a tangent to resume the construction of your theme. Even stopping will be part of the flow. But it takes time.

So practice shifting from focus to flow until they become one in the same. Check yourself mid-flow and ask if you’re contributing to your central point. If not, go back and refocus. This simple writing habit will revolutionize your thinking both on and off the page.

4. Keep track of your subject and predicate.

People are story oriented. We crave action and drama and impact and feeling, but all of that substance is lost when the subject strays from the verb. So keep your actors and action connected if you want to connect with your audience.

Take this sentence for example:

“I am writing this sentence.”

You know what I’m talking about, and you’re ready for the next bit. But watch what happens when I separate the subject from the predicate.

“I am writing, so beautifully, so thoughtfully, so intelligently and so eloquently, this sentence that so well instructs my audience on sentence design.”

The reader has no time to rest because he’s wandering through a maze of adverbs and phrases that keep the actor from the action. The main clause of “I am writing this sentence” is all lost. It is difficult to read.

The trick is to keep track of your main clause — the subject and predicate — keeping it connected so that readers needn’t do mental gymnastics to arrive at your point. Once you’ve connected your subject and predicate, then you can embellish on everything else that adds to your point.

Imagine the main clause as a locomotive engine. When placed at the beginning or end of the train, it thrusts your message forward.

Related:

5. Choose strong verbs.

Part of persuasiveness is making the reader feel your action. Strong nouns and verbs aid. Adverbs detract. Take these two examples:

The Dow tanked.

The Dow just dropped really quickly.

The first sentence uses three words to convey a rapid fall. The readers understand and they’re ready for resolution.

The second sentence uses six words to relate the same thing. The adverbs dilute the sentence, they tire the eye and they render the reader non-receptive to the next message. Just like a human life only has so many heartbeats, the attention p only has so many words. Choose those words with purpose.

Don’t just think deeply; contemplate. Don’t write quickly; scribble or jot. Using fewer words to describe the same thing amplifies clarity and pronounces power. It also forces you to think better.

6. Delete hackneyed phrases.

To think clearly, you can’t lean on the thoughts of dead writers. You must be original in every line. I recently wrote, “jumped to conclusions” and I realized that wasn’t my thought. I didn’t jump. I just stole a tired phrase that some dead guy devised a hundred years ago, which still happens to be popular. So I used my brain and refined my thoughts. Instead of jumping to a conclusion, I presumed. Much better.

During your rewrites, go through and delete every tired phrase that people say just because people say. Then think about what you really want to convey in your own words. Use that. Tease it if you want to make it interesting, or play it straight. But make it original.

When readers see your message littered with hackneys, they assume you don’t have your own brain, and that your message isn’t important enough for original thoughts and words.

7. Use parallel construction.

Parallel construction makes for effective communication. Take Abraham Lincoln, JFK and Martin Luther King for instance:

“…and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”

“Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to assure the survival and the success of liberty.”

“And so let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire. Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York. Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania. Let freedom ring from the snow-capped Rockies of Colorado. Let freedom ring from the curvaceous slopes of California.”

Notice how these famous authors arranged similar ideas with similar words and structures. Feel the power as each sentence builds. Notice how you remember things like “of the people, by the people, for the people.

Parallel construction primes the reader to comprehend like ideas. It guides your audience to easy understanding. And it aids the memory.

If you operate a business, thinking is your bread and butter. So start thinking better today. Start a writing habit today.

Writing Development-Reflection Essay

It is the same with my writing, ight now I am slowly putting together the little pieces to make them bigger and complete. This essay Is a reflection on my previous essays from this semester; focusing on the difficulties I face and have overcome in writing. In my First-Week Essay my writing skills were somewhat better than I had expected them to be. For the most part my writing skills were adequate; however, I did have some areas where they were very good and others where they were developing.

My two main areas that needed development were punctuation and effective transitions. The problems with my punctuation were the proper use of commas and semi-colons. Some of the mistakes with commas was the absence of them. One sentence in which I omitted two commas is: “no matter how much practice I have with writing[,] I still feel like I need morel,] or I need to try different techniques. ” I had looked over the need of the commas in the sentence because I had thought that the sentence was fine without the two commas.

After reading back through my essay, specifically the sentence I mentioned previously, I realized that the commas were necessary In order to have an effective sentence. In my next essay I was able to fix my punctuation errors but I encountered other difficulties instead. In my Reading Response Essay, where I responded to Anne McClintock’s essay, “Propaganda Techniques in Todays Advertising”, I lacked critical thinking, effective transitions, examples and details. All of which are needed to write an effective and scholarly response essay.

Critical thinking Is not hard for me; however conveying my thoughts In writing is a challenge. I have a difficult time structuring my sentences, using transitions, and providing examples and details. sometimes I forget that the details and examples are very important in specific essays such as the Reading Response Essay. One example from y Reading Response Essay in which I did not use transitions is my introduction paragraph. In the paragraph I mentioned how “children are unaware of propaganda techniques and how they work.

They see something that appeals to them and they want It no matter what” and then I skipped to my thesis statement which was “glittering generalities, plain folks, and bandwagon are the three most Insidious propaganda techniques out of the seven mention by McClintock that have had the most impact on my life. ” I didn’t use any transition between my sentences, I simply skipped from children, to my life, and left readers confused because I went from oint to point hastily and not smoothly. Puzzles can be very frustrating a majority of the time but the satisfaction and relief accompanied with them overweighs the negatives.

The same may be said for papers. Stress and frustration are two major may be said about me. However, the stress and frustration can become limited through the practice of writing techniques and development. This semester I focused on slowly improving my writing, by learning how to express myself, in writing, through much practice in my Writer’s Notebook, and by adding more details to my points and ideas. As I reflect on my Writer’s Notebook from the beginning of the emester till now, I have noticed that I have gone into greater depth to respond to the Writers Notebook questions.

I had first noticed this because my most recent entries have been longer in length than the first few that I was assigned. However, I have put more thought into my writer’s notebook responses and as a result have been able to express my opinions better than I had been in previous writing responses and essays. I believe that my writing is slowly developing; the changes may be minor and hard to see for some, but for me, they are completed sections to the puzzle. My writing is becoming a work of art.

Descriptive Persuasive Essay

Descriptive essay is a genre of essay which is used to describe a certain subject: a person, a thing, a place, a memory, experience, situation..

. A good descriptive essay should make the readers feel like they are present in the scene. As other essays, a descriptive essay usually has three parts: introduction, body paragraphs and conclusion. In the first part: introduction, the writer must have a sentence to introduce the subject with many kinds of techniques. Besides, there should be some more sentences to explain why the subject is important to the writer. In order to make coherence, the writer may add a linking sentence and starts the next part: body paragraphs. This is the most important part of the essay.

It contains most of the description. The writer will portray the subject so that the readers can feel like they are in the scene and they can know how it looks, feels, smells… Finally, in the conclusion, the writer will give his or her final opinion about the subject. Although writing a descriptive essay may sound very easy at first, it’s really very difficult if you want to transfer your ideas to the readers. First, you should jot down as many details about the subject as possible.Try to recreate it in your mind. The more details you have, the better the essay will be. Then, you can describe it, using clear and concise language.

You should avoid repeating the words continually. If you want to describe something, you need to appeal to the senses of the readers. Explain how the thing smelled, felt, sounded, tasted, or looked. If you can describe emotions or feelings related to your topic, you will be able to leave a deeper impression on the readers. Moreover, you should add more adjectives, adverbs, prepositions and prepositional phrases to make the experience more vivid. You can impress the readers by your vocabulary and make them cannot stop reading your essay. By using your five senses effectively and recreate the emotions in your essay in your own way, you will be able to show your experience to the readers.

What make a good descriptive essay are not facts or statistics but your detailed observations and descriptions. Although sometimes it may seem rather vague, a descriptive essay is the most liberating and pleasurable essay to write. You are just writing something as you see it. If you can describe an idea or image in language, you have accomplished your task.
