The writer of the article Timothy R. Barry has discussed ten qualities which a good manager should possess if he or she wants to succeed in the contemporary business world. The writer has mentioned the qualities in the ranking of their importance. They have been discussed in the same ranking here. The first quality that the manager should have is having a vision which is shared by his or her employees. The second most important quality is that the manager should be a good communicator.

He or she should be able to communicate effectively at all levels, understand other people’s point of view and make other people understand his/her point of view. The next quality that the manager should possess is integrity. As he or she is the role model for the employees, the manager should hold high ethical values and conform to them by ethical practices. The leader should also be enthusiastic and have a can-do attitude. Another quality that the manager should have is of empathy. The manager should be able to understand the problems and values of other people and respect them.

The manager should also be competent at the task on hand which is usually leading people and keeping them motivated in the right direction. He should also have successful experience this regard. The next quality that the manager should have is the ability to delegate tasks. He should be able to trust the abilities of his subordinates and give them confidence in performing the task. Another quality that the manager should have is to keep cool under pressure and not panic. Good managers see it as an opportunity to excel.

The manager should also possess team building skills in order to gel the team into one cohesive unit, and understand the dynamics of a team. Lastly, the manager should also possess problem solving skills which are used to come up with creative and effective solution to solve the problems faced by the team and the employees. “The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me” Reading “The Joy of reading and Writing: Superman and Me,” gave me a different perspective of reading and writing. Sherman Alexie, who grew up on the Spokane Reservation in Wellpinit, Washington, explains his life as an Indian boy, and how reading and writing helped his life to succeed. Alexie purposes is to discuss how he first learned how to read and write, his intelligence as a young Indian boy, and Alexie as an adult teaching creative writing to Indians children.

Alexie learned not only how to read but to love reading. He used his love of reading to propel himself through the school system, removing himself from the stereotypical to be dumb, quiet, poor, and to fail in life. Alexie begins his essay with a self confidence tone. Alexie, while growing in the Indian Reservation, at the age of three he learned how to read by using Superman comics. Alexie taught himself how to read the comic books by looking at the pictures and dialogue and pretending to say aloud what he thinks the story might be saying. I look at the narrative above the picture. I cannot read the words, but I assume it tells me that Superman is breaking down the door. Aloud, I pretend to read the words and say, Superman is breaking down the door” (14). Alexie learned quickly how to read while many other Indian kids struggled to read basic words and vocabulary. “He reads Grapes of Wrath in kindergarten when other children are struggling through Dick and Jane” (15). After Alexie established his self confidence tone, Alexie shows his determination tone.

Indian children were stereotypically supposed to fail in the classroom and most did. Indian boys who fail were accepted; those who did not were not accepted. Alexie was smart and he refused to fail, he never got intimidated, he always participated with the non-Indian peers in class. “I fought with my classmates on a daily basis. They wanted me to stay quiet when non-Indian teacher asked for answers, for volunteers, for help” (15). Alexie loved to read, he read everything he possible could, even if they were not books.

Alexie wanted to be educated and refused to fail. “I refused to fail. I was smart. I was arrogant. I was lucky” (15). Alexie’s tone at end of the essay, he was proud and surprised of himself because he became a writer. Becoming a writer, Alexie started to write books for children and he started to teach creative writing at Indian Schools. Alexie is proud because he has the opportunity to help other Indian kids to succeed in life. “These days, I write novels, short stories, and poems. I visit schools and teach creative writing to Indian kids” (15).

Most of the children in the Reservation read his books and write their own poems, and that makes Alexie proud of himself. But there are some of the children that who have already given up hope on themselves and sit in the back of the classroom and do not care anything for reading and writing. “Then there are the sullen and already defeated Indian kids who sit in the back rows and ignore me with theatrical precision” (16). Alexie is trying to break down their locked doors, and he is trying to save their lives by teaching them to read and write.

Alexie refused to fail, instead he read different kind of books and he became strong reader and a smart Indian. Alexie read everything and everywhere he went. This is probably one of the reasons Alexie never fail in school and his succeed life, because he loved to learn. He also committed to help other Indian in the Reservation by helping them to learn how to read and write. Alexie purpose was to try to save their lives. “I am smart. I am arrogant. I am lucky. I am trying to save our lives” (16).

Wicked Angel by Taylor Caldwell is a suspenseful and intriguing magnum opus beginning from the very first page; there are no dull moments in the Saint household. Caldwell has a brilliant gift for the creation of characters, as all the characters were so full of life. Angelo Saint was described as the prototypical psychopath that is, “born without a soul”. An overindulged only child, Angelo has his devoted mother wrapped around his fingers while his more practical father Mark, looks with horrified wonder from the sidelines.

Angelo intensely detests his maternal Aunt Alice, who recognizes his social disorder from the start. At the opening of the story, Angelo, then 4, expresses deep rage at Alice and this rage manifested in bouts of wetting accidents. He then attacks Alice by smashing the contents of her purse; he destroys her sunglasses; used her handkerchief as toilet paper and flush some of her money down the toilet. His loving, but foolish mother Katherine condones his actions by insisting it was just a childish prank.

Mark, however, punishes Angelo. Over the years, Angelo’s cruelties become more subtle and clever. At 6, he discreetly kills a pet dog, which Alice discovers when she visits her sister’s family at their summer place in 1959; he frightens away the birds and woodland creatures, viewing them as “weak enemies”, and he nearly kills Alice by pushing her over a cliff. Luckily, she is saved, but does not testify against her nephew.

Angelo is described as physically large for his age, stunning in appearance and mentally gifted. At 10, he nearly poisons a housekeeper because she senses he is not the “Angel Saint”, as Katherine calls him; he hounds a classmate out of his prestigious prep school; he pit people against one another and broke a teacher’s arm “accidentally” during a school football game. He uses charm to get out of every difficulty and has all, but these few, whom he has hurt, fooled.

When Katherine becomes pregnant with a second child in 1963, she senses it is wise not to tell Angelo. He pesters her for information about why she is going to the doctor and once he discovers the secret, kills the unborn child, Katherine, and later perishes. Even his death is bizarre – he trips down a flight of steps, only to land his head on the marble floor below. Katherine dies in the hospital, confiding to Alice that she really knew what an evil son she truly had.

Click here to enter text. 2. Of the items on my list, I most liked writing personal narratives and research papers because I enjoy telling personal stories and learning about new subjects. 3. I least enjoyed writing poems and speeches because writing poems isn’t one of my strengths and I don’t enjoy talking in front of a large group of people; especially strangers. 4. I think that the area of my writing most needing work is broadening my vocabulary. 7. The types of writing that I will probably do in my college courses are persuasive, analytical, and argumentative; in my possible career, analytical and argumentative; in my personal life descriptions. 8. In the past, my experiences with writing courses have been great. 9. My writing goals for this course are to broaden my vocabulary and to learn new writing styles. 10. My thoughts and concerns as I begin this course are not knowing my grades on my papers and assignments really frightens me. Other than that, I cannot wait to begin growing as a writer.
