Hidden Wisdom Found in the Little Prince by Antoine De Saint-Exupery

The Little Prince, written by Antoine De Saint-Exupery, is a Work of literature that contains both hidden and explicit pieces of Wisdom. This childrens story is about a little prince who lives on a small planet. The planet is simple, it is comprised of three volcanoes, which come up to his knees, and a flower overwhelmed with pnde. The flower and the little prince have conversations about life that confuse the little boy to the extent that it sets him on ajourney to discover what is really important In ones existence. Before the little prince had a chance to set on his journey, an aviator crash-landed onto his planet and they began to form a friendship. The little prince started to teach the visitor about how to take care of the planet and the importance of cleaning out the baobab trees before they had time to grow.

A baobab is a plant that needs a large amount of immediate attention. If It does not receive it, the baobab could expand and ruin the Whole planet, The little prince said, When you finish With your own toilet in the morning, then it is time to attend to the toilet of your planet, iust so, With the greatest care (21). The little princes point is simple: the baobabs need to be taken care of. even if they do not seem to cause direct harm to the inhabitants of the planet. I see this very concept in my everyday life. For example, I pay attention to recycling. This is not because of the short-term effects of littering, but rather because I know littering can potentially caus! e a problem for our environment. The chances of me directly hurting an animal, by throwrng one wrapper on the ground, are very slim.

However, I keep the ground clean for other reasons. For instance, I may influence somebody else to litter, simply by showmg this person it Is okay for me to do it. If everyone in the world is behaVing this way could have a huge effect on our planet. I slowly started to realize that the advice the little prince was gIVing and receIVIng was actually symbolism for what surrounds me everyday, The little princes planet is a microcosm of our CIVIlIZalIOI’I, Many envnonmentalists today believe it is harmful to litter because eventually it causes problems for our enwronment This entire thought about the baobabs, once again, gives the reader insight into the authors infinite wisdom and foresight. He wrote about the enVironment before it became a public concern. Later in the text it says, A baobab is something you Will never, never be able to get rid of if you tend to it too late (21). This quote sounds similar to the famous clich nip it in the bud!

This clich is usually talking about conquering a problem immediately, before it has time to develop into a larger issue. My mother always tells me to drink tea even ill think I may have symptoms of a cold, We both believe that if I can get rid of the symptoms than i can prevent a cold. Unfortunately, we did not always agree! A long time ago, I refused to try and take Vitamins and herbs to cure my symptoms, because I did not think that would prevent me from haVing a cold, Boy, did I Wish I nipped those symptoms in the bud, because the cold caused my bronchitis to act up. and I ended up in the emergency room on Shabbat. I always try to take care of colds before they worsen now. The little prince continued explaining life lessons to the visitor through the metaphorical baobab. He said. You must pull up the baobabs the moment they can be distinguished from the rose-bushesit is very tedious workbut very easy (21).

This idea is often seen in our lives as well. It takes a very slight effort to take care of a friends possessions, but one would have to pay a great price if something were to happen to an object while on loan. If I would not take that concept for granted lwould often save myself from unwanted consequence. Then the prince set out on his Journey, Along the way the little prince stumbled upon different planets where he became acquainted With many taskroriented people. Among these were: an emperor Who controlled the universe; a geographer, Who sketched the world as explorers described it to him; and a tippler, who drank to forget his shame of drinking. The prince also met a Turkish scientist, Saint Exupery writes, On making his discovery, the astronomer had presented it to the International Astronomical Congress, in a great demonstration. But he was in Turkish costume, and so nobody would believe what he said. Grown—ups are like that (17).

Meeting all of these people gave the little prince added sell-confidence. He realized that adults had a great deal to learn because he felt he knew more than they did. This sequentially made the entire experience of learning the most important lesson of his life more humbling for the prince. What the little prince overlooked was that! he was also lacking certain characteristics He was about to learn a lesson that was extremely vital to shaping his future. his indiVIduality. and his personal growth. The emperor that was mentioned earlier expressed another key point in the story. Accepted authorities rest first of all on reason. If you ordered your people to go and throw themselves into the sea they would rise up in revolution. I have a right to require obedience because my orders are reasonable (SB). This expression leads the reader to believe the emperor is foolish since he does not actually have control over the entire universe as he claims.

The emperor just used this idea as an excuse for the little prince when he could not produce the sunset the prince desired. There is hidden meaning in the emperors words. The idea he is proposing is an idea the American people take for granted nowadays, democracy. This ideology has worked for the American government lor over 300 years. The idea is using reason to achieve a compromise. I completely agree with the beliel that reasoning can achieve unity and omectivuy. The U.S.A. has successfully employed this method t! hroughout its short history. Finally. the little prince reached earth where he met a fox who taught him the secret to life. He said. It is only with the hean that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye (84).

This is one of the more obvious messages that Antoine De Saint—Exupery wanted the reader to grasp from the story. This quote talks about something valuable that is also intangible. such as. love or friendship. it teaches the little prince a great deal about the relationships he maintains. When he encountered the fox he learned the word tamed meant to establish ties. At this point in the story. the little prince realizes that flower on his planet had a special connection to him. initially he believed this was true because he thought the flower was onerofra kind in the entire galaxy. Later. De SaintrExupery expresses the little princes disillusionment. He was standing before a garden. all arbloom With rosesand he was overcome With sadness. His flower told him that she was the only one of her kind in all the universe (64). At the end of the day. the fox convinces the little prince that the rose is specral because he tamed it.

The little prince had taken care of the flower: he had put a glass cover around it at night and he communicated With it. This implies a special COHHSC‘IDH. The little prince also had a unique relationship With the visitor, which becomes increasingly significant towards the end of the book. The relationship they have is comparable to a lather and his son. For example when the little prince explains to the visitor: All men have the stars but they are not the same things for different people. For some. who are travelers, the stars are guides. For others they are no more than little lights in the sky For others. who are scholars. they are problems. For my businessman they were wealth, and you Will have the stars as no one else has them (43).

These last Words the little prince said to the aVIator are analogous to a dying father uttering his last words to his son. Relationships are the foundation upon which humanity rests. Without relationships between people. the world would be a sad and lonely place to live. From this l must learn to reconsider and appreciate the relationships in my life. with all those around me. Only through relationships With others can one learn about oneself. Although the little prince was arrogant. he was a smart little man, When talking to the merchant. he came up with a question that embodies the typical hard-working American today, The author writes. This was a merchant who sold pills that had been invented to quench thirst. You would eat one pill a week and would feel no need of anything to drink with these pills. computations made by experts, prove that you can save fifty-three minutes in every week.

And the prince questions the man: And What do I do with those fifty-three minutes? (74) Many current newspaper articles and teleVision news stories mention the hustle phase the American population has entered. due to recent technological advancements. Sometimes I Wish I had a car. so I could be involved in more activnies. After reading The Little Prince. I realize that I am lucky. In a sense. not having a car actually allots more free time to enjoy lifes little things. I live in a time when television shows like! The Oprah Winfrey Show and all sorts of self-help books tell everyone to take a step back and smell the roses. Oprahs show is one of the most popular ones on TV and these self-help books are often best sellers because thee topics are the obsession of people today! These items have unbelievable skyrocketing ratings, This is obsession ol people today! Take a day ofl and stop and smell the roses. Vou only live once so live well! Spend more time With your children! People who devour this fact should simply read a childrens story titled The Little Prince. The little prince learns lessons we could all use.

My Childhood Memories from School to Adulthood

When i was 10 years old, | Visited the Bedford County fair. For something so simple and unsophisticated, it held a world of amazement for me. There were the smells of the cotton candy. snow cones and funnel cake along the concession stand area. The mechanical sounds of the amusements mixed With the natural sounds of the farm animals to create a montage I’d never heard before. The whir of the roller coaster competing. With the mooing of the cows Roosters crowing in time with the ringing of the bell as boys tried to impress their girlfriends with a show of strength. Pigs and piglets squealed as the little train went by, its mini locomotive blowmg it’s piercing whistle. All of it making a strange mix of sites, sounds and smells that haven’t had in a long, long time.

But the thing that I remember most spending time by the cow stalls. For some reason I was mesmerized by the large Jersey cows that the 4H club had on display I would sit on the split rail fence by the hour, watching not only the cow but also the reactions of the people that came to Visit them. I became such a fixture at the stall that people began asking me questions about the cows and I could actually answer them as if I was really part of the presentation or had any real knowledge about the animals or the upkeep involved. The only people that weren’t fooled by my devotion were the actual members of the 4-H club and the owners of the animals.

It was as if l was up against an invisible barrier to acceptance or i carried some mark on my body or clothing that only real members could see that identified me as a wannabe and not someone to be invited into the inner circle. For a while I thought that maybe I would actually join the 4-H club and have a cow of my own. But the thought of trying to keep a cow in my backyard in our rural neighborhood kept me from fulfilling that dream. I never did own my own cow, nor did I ever experience that kind of attraction to bovines again in my life. But for a couple of days in the summer of my 10th year. I was a real-life cowgirl.

Find Books That Reflect My Childhood

“It is critical to understand that students cannot truly learn about themselves unless they learn about others as well.” The main point of the Windows & Mirrors article is to show us that children need literature that reflects their own experiences as well the experiences of those who have different cultures. In my future career in working with children, it will be my job to develop relationships with them in order to help them identify and understand differences throughout the world. A good way to effectively help children identify differences is to introduce them to literature that acts as “Windows & Mirrors”.

While reading literature throughout my childhood I always found it easy to find mirrors for myself in children’s books since I am a middle-class female. When I was 5 years old, I enjoyed spending time with family and friends, being outside, and going to new places. A mirror is a story that reflects one’s own culture and guides you in building your own identity. A window is reflected in the literature that offers insight on someone else’s experiences and culture. The first story I choose to read was The Lost Cousins. In this story, the main characters Esme, Tate, and their Grandpa were all enjoying their day at the park looking through photo albums. Eseme and Tate were very curious as to who all these children were in the photos.

Their Grandpa proceeded to tell them that all these children were their cousins. So grand-dad, Esme, and Tate proceeded to travel across the world and find their long-lost cousins. The main conflict was that Esme and Tate did not want to leave their cousins because they knew they were going to miss them. So, they made sure they planned the next time they were going to see each other before they left. I related this book to my life because I have cousins all over the world. I have cousins in Ohio, Utah, and Florida that I don’t get to see that often. I also have cousins that I don’t know about, since my dad was adopted from South Korea.

Cronin uses a cartoon style of art in his book, The Lost Cousins. Cartoon art consists of exaggerated characters that are used for comic or satiric effect. It is easy to depict what each figure is representing throughout the book. With that being said, the illustrations in this book are not realistic at all. The next story I choose to read was Paul and His Friends. In this book the main character, Paul, travels around the world with all of his friends in order to spread his love for God. Paul was very hesitant on spreading his love for God because he knew not everyone may have the same views as him. Over time, he became more and more comfortable because he was alongside his friends. I related to this book because I myself had a religious upbringing, and the church was a weekly part of my life. I even attended Sunday school sometimes as well as participated in summer camps through my church. Through these activities, I made many friendships that have lasted throughout the years.

In this story Paul and His Friends, all the characters are animals. So, its safe to assume that the author is using cartoon-style art. In this story Paul and His Friends. The next story I choose to read was Everyone Can Learn to Ride a Bike. In this book a little girl is learning to ride her first bike. She was very persistent at first but eventually becomes very discouraged because she kept falling. Her dad encourages her to keep trying and tells her that she should never give up. When I was little, I can remember the only thing I wanted to do was learn how to ride a bike. It took me days and days to learn how to properly balance without training wheels. I remember my parents were very helpful and often told me that I would get it one day, but I never believed them. In this way, the girl and I are alike because we were both eventually able to ride our bikes.

Chris Raschka uses cartoon style of art in her book Everyone Can Learn to Ride a Bike. It is very easy to pick out what each picture is supposed to represent. Cartoon-style art consists of exaggerated characters that are used for comic or satiric effects. Everything in this book appears to be done with watercolor paints. You can tell what each object in this story is, but if you didn’t have any prior knowledge you would not be able to determine what anything in this story is. For example, if you didn’t know that a bike had two wheels that were in the form of a circle. You would most likely not be able to tell that this story is based around a bicycle.

The next story I choose to read was The Brand-New Kid. In this book Lazlo, the main character, switched elementary schools. He was bullied, made fun of, and did not fit in for the first few weeks when he got to his new school. He was very upset everyday when he got home from school because he just wanted to make friends. One day, a little girl named Emily asked Lazlo if he wanted to come over and play after school. The two then had a play date and everything went very well. The day after their playdate Lazlo was very excited to go to school because he had finally made a friend who he believed would make school more enjoyable for him.

I related this book to me because I switched schools in elementary school. I was very nervous and found it very hard to go to school when I didn’t know anyone. But it eventually got better, I made friends, and loved my new school. Katie Couric uses a form of realism art in her book The Brand-New Kid. Realism art is described as realistic or representational art. This type of art displays the world with very close attention to detail. The illustrations in this book are very well thought out. For example, on each individual person’s face you can see things like freckles, eyelashes, and blemishes.

The last story I choose to read was My First Puppy. This story was about the Sam’s journey of getting a new puppy. He was so excited to get his new puppy, Ralph. So excited that he was willing to learn every single little detail about taking care of dogs so that his mom and dad would be more willing to purchase him a puppy. Once Sam’s family finally adopted Ralph, he soon realized that taking care of a dog is a very big responsibility. But he loved Ralph, so he didn’t give up. He had to take him outside to bathroom multiple times throughout the day, teach him to sit, stay, and how to walk on a leash.

I related to this book because when I was in 5 years old my parents took me to the Animal Rescue League to get my dog, Princess. They made sure to tell me how hard it was going to be and that I will have to be very patient with the new puppy. Lisa Chimes uses realism art in her book My Brand-New Puppy. Throughout this story you can tell that the author paid very close attention to detail. You can see things like freckles, eyelashes, individual teeth, and whiskers on the puppy. Overall, it was very simple to find books that mirror my childhood. The parts of my childhood that were the easiest to find books on were thing’s that almost every child goes through at some point.

For instance, virtually all children go through the process of having to make new friends and learning to ride a bike. Some of the mirror books I choose could also be represented as a window. For instance, the story Lost Cousins, is based around Asian-American culture, and the different kinds of animals, foods, and practices they have in their culture. This could serve as a window for some children. This story could also act as a window because not all children have family members halfway across the world and they may not know what that is like. Another example of a story that may serve as a window for some children is, My New Puppy, because some children may not have the opportunity to get a puppy at a young age and may not have that experience.

For this assignment, I learned how easy it is to find mirror books that follow my lifestyle, but how challenging it may be for others. I also learned that there are lots of different ways you can relate to literature. A lot of books I picked up I didn’t think I would be able to relate too, but after reading further I began to see more commonalities. The first point I took away from this assignment is that it’s important to read books that mirror your children, so they feel secure and accepted. The second point I took away from this assignment is that even though having mirror books for a child is important, it’s almost more important to find books that children cannot relate too. Having books, they cannot relate to allows them to learn about other lifestyles and cultures. The last point I got from this assignment is to make sure I know every child well enough to know what books I could read to them to act as a window or mirror for them. In the future, I will use this information to make sure I challenge myself to have window and mirror books accessible for all children.

Their Encounters With Literature Since Childhood

I will try to remember my encounters with literature, I think I should start with my childhood. What comes to mind is a library full of my dad’s medical books. He had this incredible library in the house, three of the walls of the room were covered by bookshelves that reached the ceiling. The fourth wall had many windows that made the room have a perfect natural illumination. My dad loved to read; he was addicted to ‘always learn more’. Of course, he tried to make me follow his steps and he tried to inculcate in me the same interest for books. The books were a subject of conversation at home, sometimes a gift and also part of the family.

As a child I used to play with my barbies and go out to the street to play with the other children of the neighborhood. Cuba is the perfect place for children to play freely and socialize with each other. The streets there do not have much car traffic which makes children play outside their homes quite safely. I used to go out to play every afternoon after I left school, and just at the time I was having the most fun, I would hear my dad calling my name from the deck of my house. I knew he was calling me to do my school homework and of course for my reading time.

Literature, beyond being the door to various worlds, it is a personal experience for me is presented, as a tedious obligation and forced step in the academic world. However, it is possible that this perception finds its root in the way in which literary experiences are presented to individuals, a process that gives its start in early childhood and that accompanies a person throughout life. Mine was to stop doing the things that amused me to read with my father.

Over the years that feeling of obligation to read was changing out of curiosity and desire to satisfy the curiosity I felt. My dad was so happy to see my interest in literature that he made a selection of books that he believed might be interesting for me according to my age. Since then I read without stopping. I finish a book and start with the next one right away. As I was entering the world of literature, I could see that reading involves only the reader, who takes care of it, with reluctance or emotion, but it is something that nobody can replace.

During the reading, not only the words written on the paper manifest, but the subjective experience of the individual, who will give interpretation and meaning every reading experience is personal, there will not be two equals and it is framed within the context in which it takes place. On the other hand, those who write do so when they have something to say. When they want to communicate something it is perceived, something that the writer becomes aware of and presumes that others have not noticed. People write about what they want to denounce, to bring to the present what has the risk of being forgotten because they do not want to let go. Many people assume that writing and reading is a simple action, but in reality, it is extremely complex. Because to ensure the communication of the meaning to be transmitted, there must be a series of accepted and shared rules, between the use of the language of those who express or report their impressions of a situation or fact and that of those who receive that message.

Reading has become a tool to transmit and guide others, in order to enrich the cultural, linguistic ability and reduce obstacles in the literary path. Everything around us is reading. Right now, you are reading this text and a while ago you were reading a note in the elevator, a book, a recipe or a postcard. Reading is communication. Reading is essential to be connected to the world and people. Without reading we would not have knowledge, we would not have information and it would be harder for us to imagine. Reading is essential and is something we must feed throughout our lives.

American Poetry: Emily Dickinson

Emily Dickinson had a unique style of writing books and poems that were different from all the other writing styles. The most prominent feature in here writing style was an imagination of various possibilities whereby death and dead characters were used. For example, in her poems, “It was not Death for I stood up” and “Because I could not stop Death,” Emily Dickinson writes about a possibility whereby someone who is dead discovers that death is not stationary.

Emily Dickinson also used dreams and imagination in most of her writings. She also gives the characters in her writings the ability to choose between two or more different situations. Most of the Dickinson poems have a universal perspective where the corpse is depicted to have the capacity to leave the grave and return at will.

For example, in the poem, “I heard a Fly buzz when I died,” the deceased hears a fly during her funeral, consciously watches the entire proceeding, and then disturbingly returns to herself as the ‘windows failed and then could not see to see.” Death is personified in most of her poems. Her attitude towards death is undecided. Emily Dickinson finds fear or dreads desirable, as those who have experienced danger know.

In a significant number of the poems, Emily Dickinson articulated her relationship with a mystery of divinely transcendent being. Even though she appears to reject the institutional Christianity of her era, she applied the religious vocabulary and representations of Christianity to reveal her intermittent experiences of sacred or divine transcendence.

Emily Dickinson uses Biblical and Christian language in most of her poems such as Paradise, immortality, Jesus, among others to express her experiences. Emily Dickinson was able to make something beautiful out of the ordinary. She also criticized most American Literature and translated the common everyday experiences into moments of startling beauty. Emily Dickinson highlights the predicament that most young girls face when the society tries to silence them even though they are still liked.

She argues that this may not be a good idea because they had to quieten successfully her at all by putting her in a closet. Dickinson shows that the captivity they impose on her body frees her mind. She says that “Still! Could themselves have peeped and seen my Brain-go round”, indicating that putting her in a closet did not block her mind?

Emily Dickinson uses both experiment and experience in writing. For a better understanding of Emily Dickinson, it is important to comprehend how she combines experience and research in her poems. Most of the poems by Emily Dickinson ensue from an experience that is unnamed. The poems can help one understand the traumatic experience that the poet went through. Most of the people who read poems by Emily Dickinson are left trying to find a way to understand her better.

The readers get the feeling because she names most of the emotions and expectations of many people. Dickinson often compresses a significant deal of meaning into a subtle number of words. Most of the poems by Emily Dickinson challenge the expectations of people of what a poem should be. The uniqueness of Emily Dickinson has made it difficult to place her in any single tradition. Most of her poems are hard to understand due to the ambiguous language she uses, but once the meaning unveils itself, the lines that seemed baffling become apparent.

Worldview and Biblical Worldview

Table of contents

Everyone has a worldview, a way in which people view the world and all of their experiences and how they “see” the world. One’s own philosophy on life determines how one views the world. A person’s worldview can include their values; how they handle things ethically; their emotions; and their overall point of view of life. A person’s point of view of life, helps shapes their opinions and decisions. A person’s worldview shows how they think about and view the world.

This view can be changed or altered and people continue throughout their life’s journey. A worldview is the assumed model of reality through which a society understands and interprets the world. One’s worldview is a reflection of their life’s experiences, challenges, triumphs, religious or spiritual background, and access to information. Christians are known to have what is a called a Biblical worldview. In the Biblical worldview, people feel the purpose of their existence is to serve God by bringing his light and love into this world.

Biblical Worldview

Every worldview, including the Biblical worldview, is expressed through a foundational story, a set of symbols, practices, and beliefs. A Biblical worldview offers a great explanation of the world and a comprehensive vision of life by reminding us of what God has done in the world. We can ask ourselves the following questions, when we have trials and challenges. What God is doing? What God will do? It also helps us to locate the joys and struggles of our personal story within the greater Christian community, therefore, giving it a meaning and purpose in terms of Christ and his mission. (McCormack, 2008) According to Ethan Pope, the author of the article Developing A Biblical Worldview, “A Biblical worldview cannot be based upon any human system of beliefs and values”(Pope, 2000).

The basis of a biblical worldview is God, while the basis of an atheistic worldview is nature and man. Those who have a biblical worldview acknowledge God, believes that God created the universe, believes that God created man. Those with a Biblical worldview also believe that God has given us a moral code of ethics and that sin is man’s greatest problem. Furthermore, those with a Biblical worldview believe man’s greatest problems can be solved through spiritually.

While those who do not have a Biblical worldview believe in nature, science, and that naturalistic causes brought our world into existence. Those who do not have a Biblical worldview also believe that man came into existence through millions of years of evolution and that men are to establish their own code of ethics. They also believe that we are all born good but due to negative influences, people have become bad. Lastly, they feel that man’s problems are solved through government intervention, more education, technological developments or a variety of other ways. (Pope, 2000).

Christian Philosophy of Education

The Christian philosophy of education encompasses every aspect of a student’s experience, from kindergarten through postgraduate degree programs. Learning and understanding through the lens of the Bible at a Christian school gives students of all ages the opportunity to stay true to their spiritual values while receiving a high-quality education in preparation for the future. However, all students may not have access to a Christian school for a variety of reasons, including location, tuition affordability, or lack of information.

To another point, not all Christian educators will work in Christian schools. It then becomes the responsibility of the Christian educators in Public school arenas to bring a Biblical worldview and Christian education philosophy to their classroom. The focus is quite different in training a Christian School versus in a Public School setting. (Knight, 2006). The training of a public school teacher emphasizes pedagogy rather than subject knowledge.

Christian education is teaching about God’s creation and His word. God has given man the ability to gain knowledge through empirical observation, critical reason, intuitive insight, and scientific observation. When these truths, however they are gained, are brought into the light of God’s special revelation, the Bible, by the help of the Holy Spirit, we are able to see that all truth points to and brings glory to the Lord Jesus Christ.

This may not be an easy feat while working in the public education arena, with the separation of church and state, but it is still up to Christian educator to ensure they God’s light shines through all they do. “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven,” Matthew 5:16, New International Version (NIV).
