Novels Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterisimo by Jose Rizal That Deal With the Abusive Spanish Colonization of the Philippines

During the 18th century, the Philippines is still facing the abusive Spanish colonization Imprisoned for accused treason, thirty-five years old Jose Rizal was the greatest enemy of the Spaniards in the Philippines, with his outstanding linguistic ability and the interest in the sciences and the literary. Rizal writes a book about revealing the truth to the Philippines. He wrote two novels which are the Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo (One of his main characters is named Crisostomo Ibarra, who also took the name Simoun. ) which shows the drive for our freedom, These are to show the suffering of the Filipino people under the Spanish oppression and the church which had acquired the political power, Rizal’s writing spur the Filipino people but earn the disdain of the Spanish government.

The Governor—General had planned to advance to Bulacan, he says: “We will crush the rebellion’i Bonifacio, Like Rizal he is a nationalist and he’s the revolutionary leader of Katipunan, told his fellow katipuneros to tear up their cedula as a sign of Spanish slavery Meanwhile, the Spaniards tonured Rizal’s brother Panciano for wanting to know the role of Rizal in the rebellion His interrogator said that Rizal knows Bonifacio was the founder of the Katipunan and was accused that he was a traitor like Padre Burgos. “Flashback, Jose Rizal says that his brother Pacial was the one to open his eyes for the injustices in the Philippines; his brother knew Father Burgos and saw his execution.” His mother was framed and was falsely arrested for attempt of poisoning her sister-in- law.

Their family had disagreements with the friars for years and they finally had the chance to teach the family a lesson Pepe (Jose Rizal) was sent to school and was told not to use their family name and was changed to Mercado since the friars might hold it against him, He studied hard in Ateneo and got the attention of his educators early for his intelligence and writing, He criticized a college professor for noting the height difference between superior Spanish and the inferior Philippines, He rises to say that if the height difference is so important then why are there so may Spanish colonies gaining their independence from Spain.” Luis Taviel de Andrade (Taviel), a first lieutenant of the Artillery was sent to Rizal to be his defense council; he didn’t waste time on his case and started intriguing him. In just a short period of time, they captured each other’s sympathy and became friends, Back to 1896, The books that he wrote was banned in the Philippines.

His brother sent him to Spain in the Central University of Madrid to study medicine, but also so that he can freely write about the situation of the Philippines. Back in the Philippines, friars searches and burned the copies of Rizal’s booki lbarra (one of the characters of the novels that Jose Rizal wrote) was called a traitor because officials involved him in a violent revolti In 1891 the Filipino group of student, calls out for Del Pilar to be the President, Jose Rizal is disgusted since they stand for opposite site on independence. He decided to go back to the Philippines and formed La liga Filipina. Later on, he was deported to the island of Dapitan where he met Josephine, The Governor— General Blanco demands that he should eliminate the rebel, Blanco was later forcefully to banish his title as Governor-General and Polavieja were the new Governor-General. In 1896, there was a revolt against the Spaniards. Rizal receives a letter, he is told about what happened in Calamba.

Since the town people dared to protest against the friars against the misuse of their lands, they were forcefully evacuated out of their homes. Later on, he receives another bad news about Leonora having an arranged marriage to an Englishman which is against her will. The defense counsel tell Rizal that second novel is really sad and dark, he said is becoming like the character of Simoun there is no light- his soul has been corrupted and was told that “You are using your novel to avenge yourself”, December 26, 1896 , Rizal was sent to Royal Audiencia (the colonial court of appeal) to hear the trial, He later learned that it was decided to condemn him under a firing squad. Bonifacio wants to save Rizal but Rizal‘s brother Paciano is opposed to it, At the night before the execution, Rizal started hallucinating, seeing his alter ego— protagonist Simoun that he has made in his novel El Filibusterismo tempting him to change the climax of the story.

On the morning of the execution, his family received a small alcohol stove, containing his last poem “Mi Ultimo Adios”. Rizal asked the authorities for the last request as he faces the firing squad but the request is denied He altered his request to save his head during execution and the captain agrees, At the minute the shooting squad points at his back, he readily voiced his final words: Consummatum est. (It is done!) That fuelled the Katipunan and Bonifacio to fight back, they ambushed the Spanish Soldiers, and they have captured a church and killed a friar in an act of revenge for the execution of Rizal, Although this is an old film but it really is interesting to watch it. The film has power and left a great impact on how we see our freedom, education and humanity.

These two lines are the ones that really marked on me : In a Madrid pub, he says “Unless we first learn self—respect, we will not be respected by any other peoples.” After having the death sentence, his barrister says he is ashamed as a Spanish Rizal says, “No, we are the same human beings.” Although this film is great there are a bit of concern about this, about the sexual part of the movie, maybe it should have been toned down since this film is great for teaching the students and make them understand more than just reading a book. They can learn what happened, what events took place, and what events they were involved in when they were still alive Lastly, I am a bit lost, why there‘s a conflict between the friars and Rizal’s family even way before? or how did it started?

Illustrados in Succeeding in the Construction of Filipino Nation

In my critical essay essay, I will show and present the ideas of the illustrados, by making some progress that contributed to the value of the Filipino nation, as well as their political ideas to develop and inspire Filipinos to appreciate and fight for the national sentiment of the Philippines.moreover, before I start all that, on how it all happened and how their ideas shaped the Filipino nation. I just wanted to let you know and understand what Illustrados really means, where they started, who they are and so on.

they were a Filipino class, in which they had a good and popular mind, they were attentive, intelligent, and well-written in which they molded themselves into good schools during the Spanish colonial era in the late 19th century, and that’s just why they were called the ‘enlightened ones’ or the illustrados. That’s the reason why they’re called Illustrados.

they were a Filipino class, in which they had a good and popular mind, they were attentive, intelligent, and well-written in which they molded themselves into good schools during the Spanish colonial era in the late 19th century, and that’s just why they were called the ‘enlightened ones’ or the illustrados. That’s the reason why they’re called Illustrados. they were middle men, who knew and possessed aspects of European nationalism, as well as pish liberty. however, they are capable of this and know the ideas that I have stated, for this reason they have been taught and graduated in Spain during that time. In this regard, I will single out every popular Illustrados, such as their early life, writings and contributions.

They are Jose Rizal, Marcelo H. Del Pilar, and Lopez, and my priority of these Illustrados mentioned, is that of the most famous or our national hero Jose Rizal, Jose Rizal’s background shows how he built his skills for writing and providing support as a freedom of our nation, and a few years later, he had obtained many degrees, had also completed medicine and eventually obtained another degree in Germany, called a doctorate. however, after all this, he went and spent ten years in Europe, and wrote novels, all his life while he was in Europe.

He has produced many novels, and one of his works is the Nole Mi tangere. and it was completed in berlin in 1887, in this sense the purpose of this novel, is to encourage people who are blind to what is happening and how to avoid and fight against the abuse they suffered by the Spaniards in the colonial era. so that’s why it was a threat to members and catholic church officials and Spaniards, in this sense, that they were offended and instead he was forgiven, calling him a trouble maker at that time. Conflict erupted between Dr Jose Rizal’s novel, known as Noli Me tangere and the Catholic Church.

Because of the acquisitiveness and sacrilege of the Spanish in the Philippines. this is just the practices of colony government controlled education in the Philippines, with only limited high quality education in the hands of Catholic Church and it is only under the clerical or pastoral direction. and very few of the students here learn to speak and write Spanish. and far fewer could speak it properly.

But during the 1880’s, rich people were able to educate their children, sending them to foreign countries like Europe. and there, the potential for nationalism in the mind, heart, and spirit and efficiency of the reform is really fertile and flourishing in the liberal atmosphere. Furthermore to the talent and excellence of this Filipino student who has been gifted and given the opportunity to study abroad, has gradually come to be known as Propaganda, poetry, novel / s (which brings justice and awareness to the eyes of the Filipino in unfavorable circumstances), political issues, poetry thrive and grow.

And what has made a great and lasting impact on our country is Jose Rizal’s brilliant step, through his two novels, Elfelibusterismo in 1891 which means Reign of Greed, an example of which I have stated earlier, in abuse of the Catholic church over education. and one such novel is the Noli Me tangere that has been mentioned over and over again. and in addition, Jose rizal inspired Bonifacio in a field of writings, who would give hope to people, people who lack knowledge and difficulty understanding pish, through poetry, because the katagalugan understand it better when they get their emotions through poetry and superficial writing.

That you almost feel the same way as jose rizal wrote. and one of them is titled ‘Pag-ibig sa tinubuang lupa’ reminding every katagalugan that they will not be dazzled and attracted by the promises made by Spanish colonizer, that they will be taught and improved by writing, fighting, but while the length of time seems to be getting worse and the suffering of the Filipinos is increasing, that in the end, they are still being abused, deceived and mercilessly cruel. so that’s just why andress bonifacio ( a leader and self educated), and his activists who were formed as ‘Katipunan’ were shocked when he and jose rizal were arrested in 1892.

The group led by Andress Bonifacio is dedicated to ousting all the Spanish in the Philippines. in which they formed a revolutionary movement, there were many rebels during the pish rules, but for the first time, it inspired nationalist ambitions to take the necessary education that would bring true success to everyone.

Fast Food Thesis

CHAPTER I PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Like every other country, the food industry has flourished very well in the Philippines. Filipinos especially students love to eat and that’s the reason why you will see a lot of restaurants and fast foods restaurants scattered in the cities. These restaurants and fast food can be local or international food chains. Filipino food and chefs are considered one of the best in the world.

It is hardly surprising that Filipino food is often labelled as somewhat strange (like the ‘’balut’’ for example) but in its own way, its food is a unique mixture of eastern and western cuisines and reflects the history of Philippines.

The Filipino food includes dishes and cooking procedures from China, Spain, Mexico, United States, and more recently from further abroad. “Fast food” generally refers to the type of restaurants that sell quick, inexpensive take-out food. The whole experience of buying fast food has become so habitual, that it is now taken for granted, like brushing your teeth or stopping for a red light. However, what makes them Filipino is the history and society that introduced and adapted them. The people who turned them to their tastes and accepted them into their homes and restaurants, and specially the harmonizing culture that combined them into modern Filipinos fare.

Such developments have changed the nutrition habits and preferences of people. Additionally, fast food chains are not the only or even the primary source of fast food in the Philippines. Many local chains have developed to compete with other popular fast food chains and provide menu items that appeal to the unique tastes and habits at comparatively low costs.

A Heritage of Smallness in the Philippines

The Philippine population increases much faster than our economy. Our country indeed has been as slow as snail when it comes to the aspect of development. It takes a lot of years, even decades for us to be able to take a leap towards one step of modernization. Other countries like for example our neighbor, Singapore, which has been colonized by other more powerful country had been able to get up and make themselves more productive. But throughout the years, the Philippines had remained stagnant with their status in the world. Instead o becoming more globally competitive, we tend to just always sit down and relax and just accept the fact that our development is deteriorating.

In Nick Joaquin’s essay, “A Heritage of Smallness”, he emphasized how the Filipino people can be so much contented with all that is small, all that is little and all that is just enough. A child who was born from a poor family would most likely be poor for the rest of his life. It would be a common scenario that they, too, will adopt the way of living of their parents. Instead of finding a way for them to have money, they will be contented and just continue blaming whoever they want to blame.

“What most astonishes foreigners on the Philippines is that this is a country, perhaps the only one in the world, where people buy and sell one stick of cigarette, half a head of garlic, a dab of pomade, part of the contents of a can or bottle, one single egg, one single banana.” This statement without a doubt confirms the Filipino mentality when it comes to finding a source of living. Yes, on the brighter side, it may show or represent how the Filipinos are willing to do anything and everything to have money. But what Nick Joaquin probably wants us, Filipinos to do is that we should think of a realistic and achievable way for us to have money. A way wherein we would be able to suffice our everyday needs and at the same time save money.

If for example, a cigarette vendor sells P1.25 per one stick of cigarette. If let’s say that he was able to sell 100 sticks for the day. His income for the day would only be P125.00. This is just enough for a man without a family to support. But what if this cigarette vendor has a wife and has 3 children? How will he be able to meet the needs of his family and at the same time save money? Impossible! This man would most likely still be a cigarette vendor after ten years.

We see, this kind of mentality of being too laidback is the reason why we are still suffering from slow economic growth for a long time. Even those in our government have been so lax thus, nothing is happening to our economy.

It was also mentioned in the essay that the Filipino’s day starts at six or seven in the morning and ends up sometimes late. Unlike other countries whose day would start at around nine or ten in the morning and ends at exactly 5 pm. But despite this difference, they still “pile up more mileage than we who work all day and all week”. This is one of the mind-bugling realities of the Filipino Life. What do we really do when we are at work? Are we really that productive? Or are we just pretending to work just because of the salary at stake?

Next is the Filipino’s Ningas-kugon mentality. We are “used only to the small effort, we are not, as a result, capable of sustained effort and lose momentum fast”. The Filipino people are very much eager to work just for the first couple of months, first couple of weeks or even for just the first couple of days. We lack the willingness to prolong our level of zealousness to work. The reason behind that is we are so impatient. We always want an easy way to everything. Which, I guess is such a lame reason for us to work.

We should always develop a vision of the future and continuously strive to attain it. Isn’t it that most employees transfer from one firm to the other? There most common reason would be that they are not happy with their work. But the question is, when are they going to be happy with their work? IF they are already old and the firms are the ones who throws them out for the business needs younger ones?

Our love for our culture and tradition hold us back hence, hindering us from further development. “One could go on and on with his litany” — This means that it is the people’s choice whether they want us to grow our not. We often make the past colonization of our country as an excuse that we were greatly influenced by foreign ideas that is why we have difficulty in moving on and reaching for modernization. But since we know this dilemma, why won’t we figure out a way to unlock the chains of colonization that has been hampering our maturity as a nation?

Filipinos talk too much that they forget that they have a lot of catching up to do. They are too busy boasting about things that would not contribute to any aspect of the society. If we talk less and work more, then I guess that will make a great difference.

What is happening in our country is that instead of making extra effort to be able to be globally competitive, we think less and less because we are stopped by the thought of not actually making it. We have plenty of natural resources. All we have to do is to think creatively for us to be able to develop something that would catch the attention of the world. We all know that there are lots of Filipino people who are skillful in so many fields. What we need to do is to not stop at one invention. We should be always challenged. Never stop creating new things. We should make the world know that we can be something and not just a mere source of their raw materials.

Lastly, the thing I’d like to point out is the fact that the Philippines, despite the relatively large and growing population, always “splits like amoeba”. Instead of working hand in hand for our country, we have this crab mentality wherein we always want to pull successful people down. This, I may say is such an obvious factor why we are getting smaller and smaller. For example, in politics, we usually split into groups and continuously find a way to let others down. We don’t get anything advantageous from that. We just scare away foreign investors who, in reality are the ones who can help us in our present economic endeavor.

To sum this all up, I’d like to reiterate two things. First is that we, the Filipinos should strive for the betterment of ourselves as well as of our country and be not just contented with what we have – We all should learn to aim high. And secondly, instead of always splitting into groups, we should learn to be cooperative and work hand in hand for the development of our country. Let us avoid making excuses that a big crowd is too much to handle. Let us be optimistic. Let us put in mind that a big crowd means there would be a lot of manpower that would build up and invigorate a once sleeping nation.

Equity and Quality In Education

Quality basic education is a fundamental human right that promotes the all-round development of an individual. In the Philippines, primary education consisting of six levels, is compulsory and is supplemented by the local governments. Nonetheless, some independent schools are now implementing an additional level to provide equity and quality for all children as they begin more formalized instruction. These trends in our education only bring confusion to the people and indicate lack of uniformity.

For the past decades, the government has been re-enforcing the six-year curriculum, focusing on building supplemental classrooms, hiring teachers and procuring textbooks as these are always been the proposed problems by the local internal units. In effect, others including parents and students have shown satisfaction in the current education system stating that higher supervision should focus on assisting educators in enriching their teaching strategies, skills and techniques.

Furthermore, students traditionally sit for National Achievement Test (NAT) administered by the Department of Education to measure a school’s competency, so some say this is adequately enough. Also the government feels that with regard to its weak finances, the Filipinos, per se, are not subjectively and fervidly ready to accept a change in the system for it simply means extra burden to them. On the other hand, private schools opted to keep up with the pace requiring additional year so that future generations will benefit and continue developing.

They believe this empowers an individual who has learned through a program that is rooted on sound educational principles geared towards excellence, the foundations for learning throughout life and the capability to engage in critical thinking. People say today’s children’s are far wiser and different than yesterday’s learners, for the former yearns and yields new learning enhancements. It will also facilitate mutual recognition of Filipinos in other countries since Philippines is the only country in Asia with a different curriculum.

Several studies have shown that the improvements in the quality of education have positive overall impact on society. At present, Philippine primary education system has steadily stagnated and these outcomes are not surprising for the lack of transparency in the disbursement of the public funds, despite large allocation. Other countries view our education cycle as insufficient, having the lowest cohort survival rates compared with its neighbouring countries.

The government should find ways to address the deteriorating quality of education and the need to increase years of primary education. The change in curriculum will be an ongoing work in progress with many stakeholders from within and outside the school setting, challenging the current administration. In my point of view, the six-year system lacks mastery of basic competencies due to congested curriculum. The system needs major upgrading.

Change is inevitable in any society; it is a prerequisite on man to find ways to adapt with the dynamism of the world in order to survive. These changes often bring development. In order to be progressive, the government together with its people should catch up with the rest of the world. I agree with the statement that “lifelong learning is a survival skill” thus schools shall find ways of making learning meaningful and relevant in the lives of their students. I believe success comes from taking the first step and a willingness to make mistakes.

The Great Dr. Jose Rizal

“It is a useless life that is not consecrated to a great ideal. It is like a stone wasted on the field without becoming a part of any edifice. “ Jose Rizal, a man with so many accomplishments, gives all of us inspiration to put diligence and hard work in all the things we do. I am amazed that even though Rizal’s life has become sort of a series of unfortunate events, he still made it yield a positive and favorable outcome for his nation and countrymen.

While he was in exile, he didn’t mind the fact that he was sent to Dapitan to live like a prisoner and yet he still managed to become abundantly fruitful with varied achievements for he practiced medicine, pursued scientific studies, continued his artistic and literary works, widened his knowledge of languages, established a school for boys, promoted community development projects, engaged in farming and commerce and many others. Despite his many activities, he kept an extensive correspondence with his beloved family, relatives, fellow reformists, and his friends who were eminent scientists and scholars of Europe.

It is only when it was mentioned in the documentary have I realized that Rizal never left the country to his own purpose and advantage, but to extend even greater his sacrifice for the sake of the Filipinos. Rizal truly was a person for his countrymen, he truly was a patriot and nationalistic for he never wanted to see his fellow countrymen being oppressed and being exploited -what made Jose Rizal stand out of the others as a hero to a nation. He truly was a man of action, he did not only look over the people nor just tell people what to do, and he helped them in their everyday work.

Rizal was intelligent and yet very humble. He always put his countrymen first before him as well he never failed to express how he loved so much his family and the people he held close to his heart through his letters to them all throughout. These are credible and more than enough reasons for me to justify that Rizal is our hero, our inspiration and our lesson of the past that just like him, we should also strive hard to live honorably and be a man for our country.
