Norms Norm is an expected and accepted behavior by a society. We get our norms from our parents, cultures, or traditions, but sociologists disagree on where they can come from. Norms are based on a kind of agreement, so they can be changed by time which Is called social construction. People also see norms as a ‘social glue’ as It binds different Individuals together. A norm requires an action as It Is a behavior. An example of a norm can be the fact that most of the people put on their stables once they get in the car.

Norms are passed on from generation to generation and ‘adapted o fit the social climate’ which is the change of norms, values, family, gender, race, etc. However, there are people who don’t follow the norms and they’re called deviants. Fox is a sociologist who spent 3 years observing the English norms, cultures and wrote a book based on her studies. One of the thing that caught her attention was the use of mobile phones which seemed to be In everyone’s life regardless of class, gender, ethnicity and, increasingly, age.

Fox mentioned in her book that people use it for different causes, teenagers use them as a status symbol whereas man are interested in the technological aspects of what they can do. She also believes that women that are alone in coffee bars or anywhere else use it as a social barrier or a form of attachment. Values Values are everyday morals or beliefs which most of the people in society agrees on. They develop overtime and not easily but they can be changed. Values can also underline social norms, for example when you’re at the shop and you get to the end of the queue you value fairness.

Also when you stay quite in the doctor’s waiting room you value health and professional advice. Most people In the same societies hare these values so they’re not the same as attitudes, in which people can differ enormously. You may think there are some values that are only yours but the truth Is they’re shared with many others. You’ve learned them from other people; this doesn’t mean you chose to them from deferent possibilities, but that you’re picked them up during your life.

There is a debate between sociologists on whose values are the mainstream ones in society; it can be the dominant ethnic group, or even the values of the rich, but some consider It’s the politician as they propose the laws of society. Values largely vary between societies, so what Is normal here can be really strange In another country. Status Status can be held by one person or a group; it’s formed on a social position. It can be linked with honor, prestige and social standing.

You can have a low and a high status In society at the same time, for example you’re the leader of a gang, within that status and achieved status. Ascribed status cannot be changed easily, it’s something that you did born into, for example your gender and ethnicity. Achieved status is what you worked for, it can be an educational qualification or entering the Job you always wanted. Achieved status is believed to be a relevant feature of life in the contemporary I-J. Roles The set of norms that goes with a status are called roles.

A role is a series of behavior; routines or responses that we give in our everyday life. We all have roles in our lives which can change with our age and adapt to our societies. You’re role can be a student at school, sibling and friend at the same time and all these roles will come with expectations. As a student you’ll be expected to learn and participate in class and do your homework. You as a student will place certain expectations on your coacher and school. Roles develop during social processes but we do born into some roles like being a daughter or a son and sibling, these are all ascribed to people.

Role conflict can occur as a person has many roles and sometimes these roles will conflict with each other. For example you can be a student expected to do your homework, but you also have a part time Job and your boss expects you to be there, but you can’t do both of them at the same time. Having a role conflict is an unavoidable part of life. Culture The word culture is used to describe the customs, beliefs and ways of life of a society r within a society. It is also a contested concept, which means that sociologists vary on their exact definition of it.

William says it’s a Way of life’ and that it contains all details of the way people live their life in a society: their norms, interests, values and ideas on life. If we take the meaning of culture this way it becomes a comprehensive definition, allowing us to connect it to many different groups within and between societies. Some people argue that Williams view on culture is so wide that it has no meaning at all, because he practically says that anything can be a part of culture. Another sociologist Woodward says that the culture of society is formed on ‘shared meanings, values and practices’.

This definition links culture with shared norms and values. Other sociologist approached that there are different types of cultures, saying that there is a high culture, and elite practices are part of it. High culture High culture is the elite, upper class of the society, the people that have an ascribed status in life. This concept is linked to Leaves who was writing in the sass. People in high culture are often associated with arts such as classical music, opera or sports eke polo and lacrosse and other posh activities.

They have a social closure which practically means that there is no entry for ‘outsiders’, which makes sure that high culture remains elite and exclusive. People in high culture tend to have special positions in the I-J, both economically and socially. However, some sociologist questioned the existence of high culture as more people can achieve their statuses and become rich, so they can buy their access to elite groups. Subculture Subculture is practiced by a smaller group in society. They have distinct norms and aloes which makes them a little part of society.

These cultures can be memos and skaters, or religious groups such as cosmetologists. As some of these subcultures are quite little they need to raise more awareness for example religious movements. The members of these subcultures change over time and so does the subcultures within society and its concerns. People mostly are part of these subcultures in their young adulthood, and often they move away from them as they grow up. However, some people stay connected to their subculture in some way for the rest of their lives.

In analyzing the nature of United States today, we can use the sociological theories conceptualized by Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim and Max Weber which is the Conflict Theory, Functionalism and Interpretive Theory, respectively. Conflict Theory simply explains the relationship between the capitalists and the workers. The capitalist is the owner of the means of production. The main objective of a capitalist is to make more profit as possible and with this Karl Marx made the concept of alienation and exploitation. The theory is named conflict because of the conflict between the capitalists and the proletariats.

Proletariats are the workers; they are the one being exploited in exchange for a high profit income of the capitalist. On the other hand, Functionalism of Emile Durkheim explains the society as a single entity that if one is not functional then the whole entity will not function. Society is said to be driven by their similarities and differences. This tells us that the whole entity can perform different functions that cannot be performed by only its parts. Interrelationships among members of the society are the main focus of functionalism.

There must be a mutual interdependence on all aspects of society so that it would function well. Lastly, the Interpretive Theory of Max Weber simply explains the society in deep understanding and interpretation of mundane activities and their meaning. Basically, it is the interpretive understanding of the society by carefully analyzing their causal relationships and consequences. Rationalization of the society through the events that happen in our daily lives is being the determinant of how the people under that certain society would act.

For the case of America, Marx would look on how the economic trend of America is being achieved and how to show how conflict-driven the country is. For Durkheim, America would be analyzed according to the collective conscience the people have unconsciously been constructed. Lastly for Weber, America would be analyzed by the rationalization of social action based on status and privileges.

To find out as to what extent social class not only shapes attitudes, values and beliefs, but also has a significant impact on life chances, I will begin by defining social stratification, social class and life chances. Sociological theories will also be used to help understand society. Education and employment impact on society will also be discussed using journal articles obtained as a guide. To understand social stratification, it is important to make a distinction between social inequality, which refers to the existence of socially created inequalities whereas social stratification is a particular form of inequality.

It refers to the presence of distinct social groups which are ranked one above the other in terms of factors such as prestige and wealth. Using the functionalist theory, we can understand stratification better as this theory views society as a system that is set of interconnected parts which together form a whole. Talcott Parsons (1902- 79). Davis and moore (1945), claimed that all societies have some form of social stratification. George Peter Murdock (1949) maintained that the family exists in every known human society.

All these people seem to suggest that individual families and social stratification meet needs that are common to all societies. I agree with the functionalism theory as it is small groups such as families that make up society as a whole. Each family trying to survive and do better than others in the process bettering the society. For a society to survive, functional prerequisites of society are required as Marion J. Levy (1952) argued that a society would cease to exist if its members were absorbed into another society or involved in a war of all against all. Marion J.

Levy ’ s argument can be challenged. With the shortage of housing, families getting absorbed into another society would be replaced by families searching for accommodation. On the other hand, ethnomethodologists follow Alfred Schutz (1932) in believing there is no real social order as other sociological perspectives assume. Social life appears orderly to members of society only because members actively engage in making scence of social life. According to Zimmerman and Wieder (1971), society go about the task of seeing, describing and explaining order in the world in which they live.

Social class – Savage et al. described social class as social collectivises rooted in particular types of exploitative relationships. These collectivises are groups of people who share levels of income, lifestyles, cultures and political orientations. An example of this could be a group of footballers, would share the same level of income, with similar lifestyles will act or be seen or perceived differently to golf players who are equally rich but may have a different lifestyle to footballers. This can be linked to Marxist theory.

Karl Marx (1818- 83) regarded people as both the producers and the products of society. People are regarded as producers as they make society and themselves by their own actions. People are regarded as products of society in that they are shaped by the social relationships and systems of thought they create. To support Karl Marx ’ s comment on people being a product of society, a real life example could be given where a student joins university for the first time. University can be regarded as a society with different individuals, all trying to achieve the same thing.

It is up to the new student to choose the group he joins and this will affect the student ’ s life at university if in a bad group or good group thereby making the student a product of that society. Life chances- Gerth and mills, (1954) stated that a person ’ s position in a stratification system may have important effects on many areas of life. It may enhance or reduce life chances that is their chances of obtaining those things that are desirable and avoiding those things defined as undesirable in their society. (Max Weber).

To help determine whether in fact social class not only shapes attitudes, values and beliefs, it is important to categorize social class. Social class refers to the persistent social inequalities. Two distinct types of social inequality have been identified by researchers working with two different sociological theories. One theory is derived from the work of Karl Marx the other from the writings by Max Weber, which are somewhat critical of Marx ’ s work. Marxian approach suggests that social class was defined by ownership of the means of production bourgeoisie who exploit the workers who do not own the means of production (proletariat).

Source: the Canadian encyclopedia. Marxian approach can be challenged as it does not refer to occupation or levels of income. Marxian approach regarded everyone that did not own land as proletariat. This would mean that senior managerial administrative and manual working class would be regarded as being in the same class (proletetariat). There is a vast difference between the income and benefits of senior managers compared to manual workers therefore it wouldn ’ t be right to put the two in the same class. Ethnic and gender factors are mportant in differentiating people and in relating them to the general division of labour and inequalities of opportunity and conditions which are associated with it. Another way of categorizing class is by referring to upper class, consisting of property owners (bourgeoisie), middle class consisting of senior managers, middle managers and supervisory and service worker class and finally the working class or lower class consisting of manual workers. A variety of studies have shown that non-manual workers enjoy advantages over manual workers in terms of their life chances.

The office for national statistics (ONS), has compiled a range of statistical evidence on inequalities between classes in England and Wales. (Focus on social inequalities 2004). In 2002, 77% of year 11 children with parents in higher professional occupations obtained five or more GCSE ’ S at grade C or above, compared to 32% of those with parents in routine occupations. In my opinion, the above statistics suggest that parents can also act as role models to their children.

An example is that if a parent is CEO of an organization, he/she will encourage their children to do well at school and reach the same level or above the parent position. Just for being CEO, this parent has set a target level for his/her children which is quit hard to archive but with the parent ’ s income, the child can go to private school and increase life chances. On the other hand, it would be hard for a parent in manual labour to encourage their child to reach CEO position. This child may see this as an impossible task and will settle for the same factory job or aspire to be the factory supervior.

This child ’ s parent income could not be enough to better life chance. Social class does really shape attitudes, values and beliefs and this can be supported by the common American saying “ The American dream ” . The American dream can be explained as a belief and the freedom that allows all citizens and residents to achieve their life chances in the USA. Today, in America it generally refers to the idea that one ’ s prosperity depends upon one ’ s own abilities and hard work. ( wikipedia encyclopedia).

This is a message passed on to all people in America but in my opinion, people from the lower class are likely to believe in the American dream as some form of comfort or assurance that things could get better in future. Certainly, by the programme ’ s end it looked if the Jesuits knew what they were talking about.

As little William sprinted ahead of the pack to the finishing line of his private school ’ s egg and spoon race, his ambitious mother was convinced he was already the person he would become. “ I ’ m definitely going to win, ” he had confidently predicted half an hour earlier. “ And I ’ m going to come second, ” chipped in his friend, the sort of friend William would need. Down at the other end of Britain, where life chances are more ragged, was [James], whose ambition in life had hardened up: he wanted to be a robber.

His answer to a dumbed-down IQ test question, “ what do you do if you find a wallet on the floor? ” was “ take it home ” . Despite this, James ’ s IQ was found to be just a touch below average. If only he had been clever enough to choose different parents. His father had scampered when he was an infant, leaving his mother Carol, struggling. This article points out that a child born in an upper class family will have better life chances as they will be able to attend very good schools or private schools thereby bettering their chances of succeeding.

The writer noted that the UK is plagued with low social mobility; and that this is partly due to the strong and increasing relationship between family income and educational attainment. The proportion of children from the poorest fifth of families born during the early 1980s obtaining a degree has increased from 6% to 9%, while the graduation rate for the richest fifth has risen from 20% to 47%. Full article can be found on Appendix 2) Social class still exists at present as most of what we do on a daily basis is determined by how we perceive or wish to perceive ourselves. Eg, the cars we choose to buy, friends we choose etc. Jonathan Moore, UK BBC Publication, 18/12/2007 I fully agree that social class does in fact have a significant impact on life chances. The functionalist theory did describe society as a system that is set of interconnected parts which together form a whole. This brings out the fact that society is divided into different classes and that inequalities do exist.

William, in the journal article was positive he would win because of his up brining from his parents not to accept second best. His parents, through their jobs have set a target for William which will affect his life chances. “Deviance in sociological context describes actions or behaviors that violate cultural norms including formally-enacted rules (e. g. , crime) as well as informal violations of social norms. ” People consider an act to be a deviance act because of the three sociological theories: control theory, labeling theory and strain theory. It deeply reflected in the movie called “Menace II Society”. Control theory. Portrayed in this movie, there are 2 control systems working against our motivations to deviate. Inner controls (things inside you that stop you from deviating- morals, religious beliefs, conscience).

O-Dog consistently goes to kill some guys with Caine, but Caine doesn’t intend to kill anyone, just to scare them. Caine says “ I never killed anyone because I didn’t see the reason to kill. ” There was also many outer controls (things outside of you that stop you from deviating- parents, police, the law) portrayed in this movie. The stronger our bonds, connections with society, the more effective our inner controls. Bonds based on attachments, commitments, involvements, and beliefs. Caine is unable to control himself due to the badly influenced bond or connection with the society.

There was a party in his house when he was very young, his parents sold and did drugs. When Caine sneaked out of his house and talked to people (his parent’s friends) he learned how to hold gun and drink. His mother caught him and tells him to go back to the house. But never really told him why it was bad. He and his parents didn’t have a strong bond because they weren’t able to control themselves either. After Caine grew up there was a time when he was charged as an adult, but the authorities lessen the charge to joyriding and let him go after linking him to the liquor store killings but failing to prove his involvement.

He later buys a stolen Ford Mustang from a car shop and robs a youth at a fast-food drive through for his new wheel rims, chains, and pager. Caine admits in the end of the movie that he wishes he had made better decisions, but now it was too late to correct them. His final thoughts, given in voiceover, are: “I had done too much to turn back, and I had done too much to go on. I guess, in the end, it all catches up with you. My grandpa asked me one time if I care whether I live or die. Yeah, I do. And now it’s too late. If he had stronger and good bonding with his grandfather who he describes him as “a biblical man” he would have been able to control himself. And wouldn’t have end up dead. Labeling theory. The labels that people are given affect their own and others’ perceptions of them, leading to conformity or deviance (labels can be good or bad)Most people resist the negative labels others try to give us, however, if we hear that we a thug long enough, we may finally accept that label and start living as a thug. Black race is the most stereotyped out of many races.

Due to being consistently stereotyped they really become who they are being stereotyped as. In the starting of this movie The Korean storekeeper and his wife watch them suspiciously, and O-Dog rails against them. As O-Dog is finished paying and is about to leave the store with Caine, the shopkeeper tells, “I feel sorry for your mother. ” O-Dog takes offense and shoots the Korean storekeeper and his wife, taking the video surveillance tape of the shooting before he and Caine flee. O-Dog keeps the tape and entertains his friends by showing it to them, and there is talk of a copy being made for others in the neighborhood to watch.

Also Caine and Sharif are beaten by racist policemen without any reason and left in Mexican gang territory, apparently with the expectation that the Mexicans will further assault them. The Mexicans take them to a hospital instead. Strain theory is a strive to reach cultural goals of wealth and success. Some experience strain (frustration) when they can’t get those goals, feel anomie (disconnect), turn to deviance to try to reach the goals (ex. – you want a nice car, but can’t get a legit job to earn enough to buy it.. So steal one instead) Caine sells cocaine.

He explains how he has learned through O-Dog how to survive in the streets while Mr. Butler told him how to survive in good. Caine’s parents have been living the same way as Caine did. His parents did cocaine and other kinds of drugs in order to make the living such as Caine. Also while Harold and Caine are waiting in traffic, a van pulls up next to them, and they are carjacked at gunpoint. Harold is slow to surrender his wallet and jewelry, so the carjacker shoots. This is the way that ghettos live. They do not work or neither try to work. Through many racism, stereotype, and they way they were raised and taught.

Deviance act seems to be greatly influenced by nurturing and environment. In this movie I felt like deviance occurs because controlling theory, labeling theory, and strain theory. Through lack of controls of parents, racial stereotyping, learning the survival through an in proper way have influenced people, they have become uncontrollable in themselves, even though they know doing drugs, killing people are wrong they were never taught the seriousness of doing and selling drugs and killing people. It shows in the last part of the movie when Caine says “ I wish I haven’t done the things that I have done. ”

She stays with her parents and her brother in Iambi. She Is full of life, always smiling, always winning other people’s hearts. She Is bananas, frank, calculi and mischievous. She Is the life of her friends circle and everyone loves her. She is a good looking girl, with long wavy hair and twinkling eyes which always have a tinge of mischief In them. She is pursuing her graduation In sociology and does extremely well In her studies. She participates In extracurricular activities, and especially loves to dance.

She participates in various allege dance competitions. She is also extremely kind hearted and likes to help the poor in any way she can. Once Mains completes her studies, she starts working in a MONGO as a fund raiser. Whilst working for the MONGO, Mains visits big industrialists to raise money for various causes. One day, she has an appointment with Mashes Curran, a very big industrialist. When he meets Mains, he immediately takes a liking to this lovely girl who has a passion for the betterment of the society, and donates generously. He also asks her about her parents and her family.

Once Mains leaves, e starts thinking she will be the perfect wife for his son, Valhalla. He finds out more about Man’s and then approaches her parents to Initiate the match, even though his wife Devil opposes the Idea. Valhalla and Man’s meet a few times and decide that they Like each other and soon get married. Devil relents and gives her permission as everyone is, for the marriage including Behave. Once married Mains goes to live with Behave and his parents, Mashes and Devoid and Vassal’s younger sister, Meta. Their house is very splendid and luxurious and Mains is taken aback by its grandeur.

She however has a wonderful relationship with her father in law, Mashes who is a simple, down to earth industrialist and runs his business with honesty and sincerity. Behave works with his father and helps him in running the business. Devoid however, is an extremely status conscious woman and is always worried about her and her family’s zeta. She Is modern in her lifestyle but she is forever pre occupied with the fact, “eke log Kay exchange? ” and this thought rules the choices she makes In life. Valhalla Is a good husband, loving, kind and attentive.

He supports Man’s when she ants to continue working after marriage, even though Devil Is strongly against the idea. Devoid and Mains are complete opposites and this sometimes causes friction in the house. Devoid is forever trying to control Mains, in terms of what she wears and how she behaves in front of friends and relatives. Devoid, feels that Mains does not know how to live up to the status of the family, as Mains was raised in a middle class family She keeps nitpicking Mains in whatever she does, may it be her choice of clothes or her friendly behavior.

She wants Mains to quit her job as she does not eke the fact that, “Mains sable Jake beak managing hat. ” According to her Mains should be a trophy wife and a perfect host to their friends and clients and should be the epitome of style and class. Mashes and Behave try and explain to Devil to go easy on Man’s but Devil refuses to listen. She forever Interferes in everything Man’s does. Man’s Is a smart girl and knows there Is no point fighting and causing bitterness In relationships and handles and approaches these situations In a good natured and tactful manner.

Behave is extremely supportive of her and helps her he way she wants by handling Devoid and dealing with her in her own manner. She does this by either being extra nice to her or giving her expensive gifts. This however is not a long term solution and Devoid too, is set in her ways. Mains soon finds out that she is pregnant. She is worried that Devoid will be an extremely interfering grandmother. Will that be the case? Will Mains be able to handle Devoid on a long term basis? If so, how will she do it? Will Behave always support Mains or will he side with his mother? Will Mains have a happy married life? Jane eke lye dislike…

Going to college is very important to me and has many purposes. Attending college can be challenging, but it can only help you and your future. One important is to further your education. Furthering your education not only helps you understand things in life, but it also allows you to get a degree. By having a degree It can open doors for Job opportunities and many other things. Getting my degree is very important to me. College Is also a time to grow up and become an adult.

College is a time to learn to be Independent, to learn to be responsible, to mature, and to learn real world responsibilities. One must become responsible while In college, because you don’t have parents to tell you what to do anymore. Your decisions affect you, and can affect the people around you. My parents have stressed to me since day one how Important college Is. They told me I wasn’t getting a free ticket Into college, and that I had to work and become something of myself. I had to work not only on my academics, but also at my athletics. Liege Is a wonderful opportunity to make lifelong friendships and memories that one can cherish forever. Being a part of a school is a great feeling and I can’t thank my parents enough for pushing me every step of the way to get me where I am today. It was a little ruff, but it was all worth it. College is a time for one to have fun, and to become a part of your school you attend. Get involved. Join something you haven’t done before, whether it is a sport, a faith based organization, or something involving your field of study.

College is all about learning new things and experiencing things you never have before, so why not take advantage of it. College is a very important thing to me, and it is something everyone should take seriously because it is not free, and you can learn so much from attending college. College is a once in a lifetime thing, so I say make the best of it. I cannot wait to see what the rest of this year has in store for me here at South. It is a great school and I am so thankful I am here!

Sexuality Introduction to the paper: In this paper, I will be writing of how the development of media, especially pornography and setting has influenced society’s sexuality. First of all, setting refers to act of sharing or sending sexually explicit Images or words through the use of cellular phones or internet. As the technologies have developed over time, it became much easier for individuals to have access to setting and pornography. Now, with the rapid development of smart phones, and various applications to download, it became a lot more easier for people to enter the world of pornography.

The effect and Influence of pornography Is almost Inevitable and seems almost Impossible to put a firm stop to the business due to the great amount of economic power and portion it has on global scale. According to “Top Ten Reviews”, there statistics on pornography reveals that every second, 3,075. 64 dollars are spent on It, and 28,258 people view them. “In 2006, $13. 33 billion dollars was spent In porn Industry and It exceeds the combined revenues of BBC,CBS and NBC.

However, it is very difficult to accurately determine the number of dollars spent and gained through the pornographic equines, because most of the revenues are created and hidden under the shade of black market. The combination of huge growth of market power and technological advancement has even allowed to push down the average age of viewing sexually explicit videos and pushed up the number of viewers. The reason this industry is able to gain and maintain its great financial power is due to the huge demand by the population.

In 2009, Medal Research Center shared a result that the word “Porn” was the most used word In the search for the videos In Youth. The reason I am sharing the results of statistics done by various researches is to show the amount of economic power the business of pornography holds and how so many people demand for the access to them. This paper Is not necessarily written to criticize the effect of the pornography market. It Is to observe how the new form of sexuality Is being created and how people’s sexuality is influenced by this great market.

It does not necessarily look at how 1 OFF how the stereotype people have about setting and use of pornography could essentially lead to factorization of some teen aged girls. The purpose of this paper is to challenge the criticizing view that is given to teen aged girls that participate in setting. One of the most interesting part of this paper is where is criticizes the law ND education that does not fully educate or give cautions to people who may be exposed to the use of setting or any type of sexually explicit sources.

At one point, the author questions how setting would reproduce the cycle of pornography industry and how they are to challenge sexism. They believe that setting could be viewed as a way to be more free of sexual expression. This paper was very helpful in writing my paper, because it allowed me to have a look at different perspective of setting and the media. My paper is not to criticize the power of the media, rather it is to observe he power and the influence it has on the society.

Detailed data’s are very useful to support my statements in the paper.
